Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: UNsatsfying The best thing about this book is the title - it sets your mind thinking but the book never lives up to those expectations - no substance to the book. Could have been so much better given the subject matter. Not a recommended buy. Summary: riveting expose I couldn't put this book down. As much as I didn't want to believe its horrific contents, I knew it to be the truth. It is understandable that there are those who can't/don't believe it: it is incredibly upsetting, requiring a shift from naive acceptance to a re-evaluation of one's relationship to one's country and its government. I understand that telling this story has set John Perkins free, and believe that in reading it, "the truth shall make you free." Summary: Confessions of and EHM this is the most informative book I have read in the last year (about 20 books)and written in an engaging style. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Very readable I tried reading a different translation of the apocrypha years ago and gave up after a few chapters. This one is very easy to read and understand. While I have not consulted the notes on it much, they are helpful when needed. Summary: Heretical This bible as far as the commentary goes should be considered heretical. For instance the commentator of the book of Esther considers the book three seperate tales combined to make historical points but cannot be proved to be historically true. So far this has made me uncomfortable with this Bible being one of my main sources of study. Although this Bible seems to be very scholarly in its content reaserched seemingly thoroghly, giving good information. It seems that the contributors are attempting to undermine divine inspiration of the Bible. This study Bible must be used always with other study Bibles sound in its doctrine. Summary: The Alternative Bible. Oxford's "NOAB" has always been a scholarly work, presenting the Biblical texts in the most up-to-date translation along with extensive annotations from a moderate-to-liberal perspective. This latest edition (published in 2001) has caused quite a firestorm of controversy among evangelical and conservative circles, mainly because of its annotations on the Biblical passages referring to homosexuality. The editors present commentary on these passages that, to say the least, goes against the evangelical grain and dares to say that perhaps these passages should be read in the context of their time, and not transferred to today's prejudices against gay people. A rather bold stance for Oxford to take, although since they also publish the conservative Scofield Bible, one might read this simply as fulfilling the purpose and scope of the NOAB, and not as a jab at the evangelical audience. This is an excellent study Bible for those who prefer a dispassionate approach, looking at these ancient texts in their original environment and presenting the latest critical scholarship. It is not a devotional Bible, nor does it offer life applications or pious reassurances. Its audience is probably limited, but it is a refreshing alternative to the plethora of evangelical Bibles offered by Zondervan and Tyndale. Note: Oxford has recently announced a new "augmented 3rd edition", to be released in March 2007. One hopes it will retain the progressive tone of the current edition, and not revert to the more conservative bent of the earlier editions under Bruce Metzger. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Criss Cross If Felicity, Clarity and Poetry were streets, they would intersect at CRISS CROSS. The greatest compliment one actor can pay another is to honestly feel that they witnessed a performance of such quality that feel they could never play it as well -- that the right actor was cast for the part (a part that few actors can play well). The same goes for writers. Though I am an English teacher, I am also a playwright. As I got through the second (brilliant) chapter of this book, I knew that this gorgeous and insightful writing deserved my kudos as I could NEVER write anything this perceptive, insightful, or delicious. In fact, if I had one word to describe CRISS CROSS, "Delicious" would be that word. Most delicious of all are the chapters about Hector; they're sweet, poignant, funny and likely to strike a chord with readers who can relate to the foibles of attempting to make a suitable impression on others, or realizing what it is that you want to do. These are among the best YA chapters I've EVER read. The problem with this book is that it should be for adults, not kids. It is not meant to tell a linear story, but reveal characters and their thoughts and feelings -- the awkwardness of not knowing what to say when you've got a crush on someone; the feeling that Nancy Drew's friends resent her; that sense of not knowing whether or not you'll ever find the love of your life; the glory of exploring the terrain of the ordinary by travelling through someone else's perspective. This writing is, as I mentioned, delicious. Kids won't recognize it as such because they want to keep the car moving and not stop the car to get out and see the sights. perhaps the test of whether or not you should be reading this book is to determine whether you care to have a conversation about all the stupid things you did when you were fourteen -- the embarassing little things that you don't want to admit. Because, frankly, that's what CRISS CROSS is all about. Personally, I LOVED the book because I found Lynne Rae Perkins style and insight tapped right into the part of me that recognized the fidgety lessons of adolescence that life had to teach me. If you haven't been there before, you can't recognize the triumphs and failures (which are triumphs of their own) of learning to be yourself. Summary: pleasant, but not especially interesting This book was pleasant, however the characters were quite ordinary, and I did find some parts so boring I just had to skip them to get through it. I saw no great depth of character or special insight anywhere. I suspect this would mostly be enjoyable if there's a nostalgia factor (if you were an teen of average popularity in the early 70's, then you might well like it.) There was some humor that might have tickled me if I'd been in the right mood for it, but apparently I wasn't. My daughters read this as part of a 'Mock Newberry' club they were in (the members, age 11 - 13, read and discussed Newberry candidates.) My girls found it boring, and it was not especially popular among the children. Summary: A very well written story Criss Cross is perfect for ages 10 and up... it's about two people, confused, going through a hard time. It is written perfectly, though main events are hard to name; the plot comes to you in the midst of a well-written tale of desicions, fate, and people. Humorous, fun... you won't want to put it down. "Criss Cross" is a one-hour radio program that brings the characters together. This book is a definite yes for anyone who loves books about relationships, an occasional broken heart, and friends. There are a few pictures scattered, making it even more enjoyable. This book is worth it. Perfect for teenagers! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Good book I think I have learned a lot from the book. Thanks.. It is a good book. Summary: You've got to be kidding me. This is literally the worst textbook I've ever used in my entire academic career. This book is jam-packed with jargon ("utilize"), acronyms (e.g.,"ERP," a term that the book does a poor job defining), and slashes. By slashes I mean, do you know how IT consultants love to use two synonymous words when one would suffice? For example: "I love/like to go jogging/running to the store/market." My MIS professor was a moron, however, so it's understandable that he would choose this book. IF YOU ARE A PROFESSOR WHO IS NOT A MORON, DO NOT MAKE YOUR STUDENTS SUFFER THROUGH THIS BOOK. Thanks. Summary: This book isn't good Consider the following statement from page 256. Here's some "early lessons" from the "new economy": Dot-com startups as well as clicks-and-mortar strategies can be viable for B2B for B2C ecommerce if the applications leverage Internet technologies AND a marketplace strength. Aren't you glad you bought the book? You ALSO need a marketplace strength to be successful, not just the Internet stuff. Kinda makes you wonder, doesn't it? Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: If you are only going to read one Economics textbook in your life... This book, although extremely long, wastes no space in its presentation. Of all economic textbooks I have encountered, this is the only one that explains clearly and precisely everything about world development, citing failed and successful examples in history. If you ever wondered what the driving forces behind policies in the world were, you need this book. Priceless. Summary: Excellent book This is one of the best books in economic development ever published. Written in plain english, so it's easy to understand, even for non-economics students. Highly recommended for graduate students, professors, and professionals interested in economic issues of developing countries. Summary: Excellent ... But ... !!! This is an excellent academic book ,but it needs updating in light of the recent global developments. Basically it is missing a detailed analysis of The spread and effects of Globalization. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: I'm a Latin Dummy! This was a great introduction to Latin for someone who has never studied it before. I have always wanted to learn Latin but really needed a starter course. The only problem is there is A LOT of information and they go through it quickly. I wouldn't recommend this book as the only one you read to learn Latin but it is a great introduction and overview. It is also very fun to read, not like an actual textbook. I am now moving on to Wheelock! Summary: Awesome Dummies Book Latin For Dummies is very comprehesive as well as readable as all the "Dummies" guides strive to be. I actually have the privelege of having one of the contributing authors (Steve Perkins--he wrote the grammar sections) as my Latin teacher. He himself is very knowledgeable and we do use Latin for Dummies in class. It is a very great supplement to our school textbook and is used through all levels of instruction. Five stars most definitely! Summary: Before going for Wheelock's Salve! Try this book first before starting with the more official Wheelock's book. Even if you don't learn Latin you get to learn a lot of interesting facts about the Roman life and the origin of different words. Summary: |
