Summary: Good, but could be better
This was the first book I used (the CS version) when I started learning Photoshop a few years ago. While it was helpful, the book is divided into specific lessons, with little time spent on how Photoshop's tools work together or in what sequence they should be used. The lesson on masking, for instance, shows you how to create and work with a mask, but spends almost no time discussing the logic behind masks or or how they make your photo-editing tasks easier. I guess what is missing is a "holistic" feel to the book. When I finished, I certainly had a better knowledge of some of Photoshop's features, but the knowledge was disjointed.

The next book I read, and one which every Photoshop user should have, is Katrin Eismann's "Photoshop Restoration & Retouching." It is the best book I've seen on Photoshop, whether for the beginner or an advanced user. I won't review that book here -- you can look it up on Amazon. I use Photoshop now at my job and as a hobby, and credit Eismann's book with most of my Photoshop knowledge and confidence.

The Classroon in a Book is helpful, but once you finish it and begin using Photoshop, you probably won't ever look at it again (I haven't). Eismann's book, however, continues to be an essential reference and guide for me.
Summary: "How to" is nice, but "Why" is better
This is well intended, and mostly well achieved title. That is, it serves a good introduction to the interface and application in general terms. But it falls far short of deeply teaching the application.

Yes, a user will have completed many exercises, and will have had many "successes", building confidence along the way. All good things. Additionally, one learns the vocabulary of Photoshop, the locations of tools and palettes, and something about the program's settings.

But sadly, as a teacher, I see little deep understanding of how to use the application from those who rely solely on this text. And although knowing where things are and what they're called are important steps to passing the Adobe Certified Expert exam, it's more important to know how to achieve results in efficient ways that only real understanding--and much practice--can produce. I was fortunate to help create that exam for the last several versions of Photoshop, and I believe it tests how an adept user actually uses the program. One should be proud to pass that test!

This book will get you started, perhaps, but it won't make anyone adept or expert. Try turning to Real World Photoshop CS2 (Fraser and Blatner) or Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers (Martin Evening) for that. Classes don't hurt either, but I'm biased there. But mostly, joyful, frequent, and curious use will make one an expert.
Summary: More Fluff Then Substance
This book covers most of the features in a very hit and run style. Each lesson tells you what to click on, but rarely why, and even then, only on some of the options.

Several of the options in Photoshop have sub-options that are not covered in the book. I expected to have to do some experimentation, but not nearly to the degree that I have had to with a product published by Adobe. Any book with "Classroom" in the title should teach most, if not all, of the functions, not sell a few of the "tada" features of a program.

As well, the table of contents and index are lacking as a reference tool.

Summary: Perfect for getting specific jobs done
This book isn't a great general overview of Photoshops capabilities or a theoretical explantion to understand the underpinings of the program. I've bought books like that and still not known what is the best way to convert a color photo to black and white. This book provides an extensive list of real-world issues that photographers have to deal with using Photoshop and step-by-step ways to deal with those problems. It is perfect for those of you who want practical, usable advice to change and improve digital images using this extremely powerful, complex program and don't need to understand Photoshop theory.
Summary: Photoshop reference manual
I found this book to be a great "Go To" book while working in Photoshop. I have not tried to read it from cover to cover.
Summary: Learn From the Master and Enjoy The Journey
Wow! Now I know for sure, that I can be a successful digital photographer and enjoy the journey along the way, because the way has been paved with this book!!!

Summary: Very Good Book -- Beginner's Perspective
I knew nothing about Photoshop when I purchased this book. I found the DVD-book combo to be quite helpful. The book can be used as a series of lessons done sequentially or you can use it to find techniques to solve particular problems, so it makes both a good coursebook and a good reference book.

The one thing missing in the book for me as a beginner has been commented on by others, and that is the "do this then do this" approach to achieve a result. An example is enhancing photos through levels where you are told to make particular changes. After it is over you are told that you figure out how to make the best changes by moving and nudging levels until the image is optimal. A better approach would be having the reader make the less than ideal changes and having Deke point out what is "wrong" with the result.

For a beginner, one of the challenges of Photoshop is learning not just how to use the program but learning how to see the changes, or learning to develop a "Photoshop eye." This is mostly what is lacking in the book. However, there are places where this issue is addressed, including the section on the burn and dodge tools.

Overall I am very pleased with this book and found it to be well worth the money spent. In addition to getting across the basics, it has made using Photoshop enough fun that I am now experimenting with more artistic rather than utilitarian techniques.
Summary: complaint
After ordering and receiving the book ,Iwas somewhat displeased with the fact that I had to go out and buy DVD drive in order to use the DVD that was included as part of the study process.
It would seem to me that I should been notified of this before I ordered the book.
I now have the book, the DVD ,and no place to go unless I buy
a DVD drive for from 60-200.00.
I don't think that my comments are unreasonable.Do you?

Title: Photoshop CS2 One-On-One Review
Author: Deke McClelland
Publisher: O'Reilly
ISBN: 0596100965
Pages: 475
Reviewer: Michelle LaRock
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Holding an aversion to any type of user manual as indecipherable and confusing, I have found "Adobe Photoshop CS2 One-on-One" by Deke McClelland to be an extremely user friendly and interesting way to learn more about my favorite program Photoshop.

The books is arranged into 12 logically ordered lessons, allowing the more experienced user to skip what it not needed and to hop ahead to new things to learn. I found this a wonderful way of setting the lessons up and I resent working through training books only to find that I could have written the lesson rather than taken the lesson. Consequently, this book is great for users at all skills levels

The easy to use enclosed CD makes the lessons vibrant and interesting. The sidebar, "Pearls of Wisdom" are excellent allowing the reader to pick up those pro tips we all wish we had someone around to explain and teach. Of course, you won't learn all you need to know about Photoshop in this book or any other, but the hands-on experience available in this book is just what I needed to learn. I've never been able to read a manual and figure out a program. Hands-on is the way to go for me so I found this book particularly helpful.

Perhaps those who learn by reading (as some of my colleagues do), will find this book frustrating, but it was just the ticket for me!

Summary: Very useful book
I had a good working knowledge of Photoshop before reading this book. I'm only halfway through, and I'm learning a lot of very practical tips that I will be able to apply to editing my portrait photographs.

I only gave it a four because the order seems odd to me. The introduction to layers is several hundred pages into the book, I thought that didn't make sense.
Summary: Poorly Organized and Hard to Follow
Superficially Evening's book appears to be all that anybody would ever need about Photoshop CS2. In fact, it is an impossible introduction for people making the jump from a simpler program, say Elements 3.0.

The organizational structure is poor.

Many ideas are used before they are explained, a fatal flaw as a text, tho' excusable in a pure reference volume. But "For Photographers" claims to be a text and not a reference.

Terms are slipped in for somewhere without adequate definitions.

And neither the table of contents nor the index are detailed enough to help somebody find most detailed topics.

I bought Scott Kelby's book after putting Evening's on the shelf, probably for good. Kelby gives the info a photographer making the jump to CS2 requires, although his language is famously just a bit to glib.
Summary: Wonderful introduction to the new version
I have some experience with Photoshop - but I'm hardly an expert. I bought this book when upgrading from CS to CS2. I found it to clearly and concisely cover all the basic tasks that you would want to do, such as color correction (with any of several different techniques), sharpening, cropping and so on.

It's the best book I've read on the topic (I have five in my library).

Summary: Buy This Book If You Are Serious About Your Images
This is going to be very short, get this book if you want to understand RAW workflow in CS2. This book takes a subject that could become overwhelming and presents it in a clear and understandable format/language. It has saved my countless hours by streamlining my PP workflow.
Summary: Great Book
This book is a fantastic way to understand how to use and manipulate digitasl negatives- I had a lot of questions going in and quickly got up to speed.

The really impressive part is how much the uauhor focuses on automation and workflow, which tend to be afterthoughts in a lot of other books about Photoshop, but are essential to any Pro workflow.
Summary: A must for RAW photogs; don't bother if you own the prior edition
I found this book to be very helpful in understanding and setting up my workflow. But the additional info over the "CS" edition is very minimal.

Summary: Bought 3 Photoshop books, kept this one - its great!
I couldn't tell which book was going to be the most useful, so I got 3 different books on Photoshop. After looking through each of them and doing some "tests" where I looked up the same subjects in all 3 books to see which author/s explained things better, it was a no-brainer -- the Photoshop Bible for CS2 is the best book on Photoshop out there. The other 2 went back, next day.

If you're someone who has to learn by doing, there are great examples you can follow. If you need step-by-step hand holding, there are procedures to follow. If you need to understand the concept in general before doing something, there's plenty of discussion of ideas and approaches. So any type of learner is covered here. The authors know their stuff and don't joke around forever and tell you all about how wonderful they are, they just tell you what's great (and even what's not so great) about Photoshop and how to make it do what you need it to do. I really recommend this book.
Summary: Best book on Photoshop CS2!
Between the thorough coverage and the authors' insights, this book can't be beat. I'm a photographer and graphic designer, and I wouldn't consider living without this book by my side in the studio. I don't want to have to take a class, watch a video, or wade through lots of personal commentary. I want to know what something does, how it works, why it's a useful tool/feature (or not, and if not, what to do), and then get back to work. This book is filled with great tips, useful tricks, honest, clear instructions, and great examples. If you can't tell, I recommend this book!!
Summary: The best book on Photoshop.
I looked into several Photoshop books before buying this one. I read the reviews, used the "search inside" stuff to read exerpts, and made my choice. Even with all that, buying books online can be a crapshoot - but this one paid off! This is a great book on Photoshop CS2. I've learned a lot already and keep this book right next to the computer so it's there when I need it. I like the style - not too jokey, not condescending - and the authors obviously know Photoshop like the back of their hands, including little things that you never even knew were there. The examples are practical but not oversimplified and the coverage of special effects, web graphics, and restoring photos is great. I'm sold, and recommend this book highly.

Summary: Great reference about Photoshop
Great reference about Photoshop to who does not want to waste time consulting bibles and cold references about the tool. That book does not board the effects creation. The author makes a point of clarify itself that in the introduction.
The book care for colors management, tones and colors adjustment, correction and cutting masks, optimization of digital photos, images preparation for the Web, in other words, all that is necessary for the conclusion and treatment of digital images.
I liked a lot of the environment preparation chapters of working with Photoshop, so much in the MAC as in the PC, and also of the introduction on the management of digital colors.
Indispensable book for art-finalists and producers of digital images.
Summary: The Best of Many
Tha Authors are intelligent, well informed, experienced and highly capable in the field of digital photography and the use of Photoshop CS2 at the professional level. The book is comprehensive and clearly written. Despite its length, the authors' styles are conducive to learning the use of this complicated program creatively and efficiently. I recommend the book to those who are motivated to learn Photoshop CS2 at an advanced level and who want to understand the principles behind the techniques as well as the keystrokes. I wish this was the first book I read on the subject. Live and learn!
Summary: Indispensable Desk Reference for Production work
When I teach my classes, and I'm asked to recommend a book, I wave around only two books...and not just because I have only two hands. Martin Evening's beautiful book (labelled 'for photographers' but valuable to any Photoshop user) and this one.

Bruce Fraser is the Photoshop geek's Photoshop Geek. He also happens to be disarmingly self-deprecating and extremely articulate. A fine one to explain the intricacies of not only HOW to do a thing, like one finds in other books (but not as well as here), but also WHY we do it.

As a novice user put it, however, this book isn't necessarily a "how-to" for beginners. But it DOES grow with the user. Old timers like me still pull out gems from this book, and I know my way around the app. But those who have just a little mileage with Photoshop can still benefit mightily.

As a teacher, I hate it when I'm requested to "just show me what button to press". As Fraser and his funny but scary-smart coauther David Blatner put it, those buttons have a disconcerting way of moving from version to version. Recipes are fine, but knowing how to cook is way better.

Learn how to cook with Photoshop. Buy this book. And no, I don't get a kickback! But there are only two books of the dozens out there that I recommend without reservation. Now go make good images...

Summary: Great Photoshop book for any type of photographer
Sheppard works through a series of photographs showing when, why and how to use the various Photoshop tools. Unlike most other Photoshop books, this one focuses on establishing a workflow.

The best explanations I have ever seen regarding adjustment layers and layer masks.

I would have given this book five stars but the printing is pretty poor and often it is hard to discern differences from one photo to the next in the sequence. Also, the illustrations are too small and are generally on a following page.

Editorially, this book is a five star gem -- kudos to Rob. As far as production goes, if there is a next edition, it should be printed at 8.5 x 11 inches, with larger illustrations and much better pagination. Yes, it will cost more. But it would be worth it.
Summary: Jack of all trades master of none
I really wanted this book to be better. I got this book after reading an excerpt from it in Outdoor Photographer magazine.

After reading the book I must say that I am a bit dissapointed. The problem is that the book tries to be all things to all people and really does not do a good job at anything.

For example the first half of the book deals with basic Photoshop 101 stuff. Things like levels, curves, crop, layers, selections etc. The only problem is that moderate to experienced Photoshop users (like myself) will find this a total waste of space, (which I could live with) but the problem is it is all presented at such a high level that novice users will find it totally useless.

The biggest issue however is that they did a VERY poor job with the layout of the book. The book has a lot of screen shots to show you various PS menus and workspaces and none of them are on the pages where they talk about it. You constantly have to flip ahead 2-3 pages to see the example. There are also many before and after shots of pictures processed with PS. It wouls have been really nice if they were on the same page, but once again you have to flip between pages.

The second half of the book does get a bit better, but I found I really wanted more.

If you get this book and you have at least a basic working knowledge of Photoshop you will probably learn a trick or two that will help you with your photography and it is really not all that expensive here on Amazon.

If you are new to photoshop you would be much better served elsewhere, like the many great books by Scoot Kelby

Summary: Ideal for target audience
A refreshing change from tips and tricks to fix up poor images or special effects wizardry. A comprehensive, methodical approach to getting the very best out of a photograph. Valuable insights rather than a respin of Help. A focus on the tools you need not every possible tool and technique. Superb photographs ilustrate how small changes can make a big impact. Highly recommended even if you're not primarily a landscape and nature photographer
