Summary: Excellent Vintage Hiaasen
Hiaasen's work has never been so far from Florida, though it does at least make a cameo appearance. In this story, professor Thomas Stratton is on vacation in China, annoying the busybody in his tour group by eschewing nearly all its tours. When he finds out fellow professor and mentor David Wang is also in Peking, he makes plans to see him. Stratton is shocked to learn his friend is dead, a victim of "death by duck," a pithy expression for American tourists who die on vacation in China after overexerting themselves and eating too much rich Peking duck. When Wang Bin, David Wang's influential and nearly identical Chinese brother, asks Stratton to accompany David's body back to the United States, Stratton initially agrees. His casual investigation into David's death turns up a few irregularities, however, and Stratton decides to stay in China instead, setting him unwittingly on a path of danger when he gets in the way of Wang Bin's ambitious plans. That he also falls in love with Wang Bing's daughter Kangmei is his salvation in more ways than one as he is forced to face his demons from a previous, undocumented visit to China as a soldier during wartime.

Just as Stratton pieces the entire puzzle of what happened to David Wang together, instead of ending, the story takes a turn and becomes even more intriguing, holding us on the edge until the end. Though Stratton gets conked from behind and overpowered by his enemies at least once too often, this is nonetheless a gripping page-turner. Hiaasen proves again that had he not found his niche in offbeat humor, he could still have had a solid future as a thriller writer. Montalbano's skills and knowledge as a foreign correspondent also come shining through, giving a vivid picture of China's people and politics. Their writing blends seamlessly for a dark tale of mystery and secrets that unfolds on two continents. Hiaasen fans looking for humor won't find it here, but those who enjoy his plotting skills will relish this excellent book.

Summary: Not typical Hiaasen, but a good thriller
Lots of action, suspense, and mystery. A good read, well written. Not a "can't put it down", so only 4 stars. But if you're looking for something to take to the beach this summer, you could do worse.
Summary: Thrills and Intrigue Across the Pacific
Hiaasen and Montalbano again show their ability to write a thriller with twists and turns enough to satisfy most readers. Tom Stratton is a college professor on a guided tour of China. During the tour, he meets his old mentor, David Wang, brother of a deputy minister in the Chinese government. They agree to meet again, but Wang turns up missing. As Stratton tries to find his friend, he uncovers a whole snake-den of double dealing and murder involving David's brother. Immediately, Stratton becomes a target for murder, beginning with being locked in a closet with a king cobra. His desperate flight gets him back to the United States, but death follows him. You jump right in during the early chapters, and the authors never let up. All in all, a satisfying tale of intrigue and action.

Summary: Very Pleased
I started with Jan's book on Studio 9 and was hooked. When I upgraded to Studio 10 I went at once to Amazon and ordered his book on Studio 10. If you want to really learn Studio 10 then this book will make you a happy camper.
Summary: An Essential book for Studio 10 users
Once again Jan Ozer has produced a most valuable book for Studio users. My suggestion would be to retire the Studio 10 Manual to the back of the bookcase, Jans book has all the answers in clear and easy to follow instructions, with plenty of illustrations. It's the only book you will need to get the most out of Studio 10.
Summary: Set manual aside and start here for your video projects
I first bought the precursor book, Pinnacle Studio 9, but after upgrading to Studio 10, I knew I had to upgrade to Jan Ozer's new book. It is my Studio bible, and I rarely go through a project without referencing it several times, or scanning through to my dog-eared pages to remind me to do something. I only do amateur home-video creations, but with Pinnacle Studio and this book, I've made many a family member smile and laugh. From the use of shortcuts, to computer maintenance, to shooting good video, to excellent examples, Mr. Ozer has created a guide that anyone even semi-computer literate could follow. He does it in a way that if you need more assistance, you can read it more slowly, but for the more expert user, the book is laid out to get your information quickly. Chapters are broken up nicely, so you can find what you're looking for faster, e.g. he has both an analog and a digital chapter, so if you don't have analog equipment, you can skip that section, and vice versa. Several examples show a concept with both a simple version and how more complex and fun methods can be deployed. Finally, two of my favorite parts are the tips and the sidebars. The tips give quick summaries and real world advice about the information that precedes it. The sidebars are more in-depth tips that help you make informed choices or provide definition to concepts that you've always wondered about, like, should I use +R or -R DVD media? Should I use background rendering? What type of digital output should I use when I'm designing a Web page? What can I expect from the clean-up video functions? This is definitely a one-stop book for all of your Pinnacle Studio, video and computer questions and I highly recommend it.

Summary: Good Job, Rick!
Riveting from beginning to end. A fascinating and disturbing look into the mind of a killer, co-written by the detective who first suspected that something bad had happened to Ginger Gassaway of Evansville, IN, and finally helped bring justice to her family by forming a bond with her twisted murderer.

I couldn't put it down.
Summary: Perfect for "Cold Case" fans
Reviewed by Cherie Fisher for Reader Views (06/06)

A page turner from the beginning! Both true crime fans and non true crime fans will be completely amazed by the unfolding of this true tale of horrific murder in America's Heartland. "Blood Trail" opens with the August, 2000 brutal murder of Ginger Gasaway in Indiana, a death that shocked the nation when her cold, calculated killer took investigators to three different counties to recover her dismembered body parts.

The authors lay out in great detail convicted murderer Joseph Brown's childhood, gambling addiction, early incarcerations and other crimes that lead up to the grisly murder of his ex-girlfriend Ginger Gasaway. In 2003, after being incarcerated for a couple of years, Joe Brown contacts Rick Reed, the detective with whom he developed a connection during the first case. As the lead investigator and co-author of "Blood Trail", Reed gives a unique and very disturbing perspective on this case. Throughout this book, Joe Brown continually leads Reed back into his world of violence, addiction and murder by confessing in great detail his 5 year multi-state rampage where he claims to have murdered 13 other women.

This well-written and highly detailed book contains a great deal of information, some of it quite personal due to Joe Brown's bond with Reed and personal family information that was obtained during the case. Reed and Walker are able to paint an intriguing, intimate portrait of a true sociopath, one that is three dimensional and complex. It leaves you with the question, was Joseph Brown a delusional sick man with many addictions whose rage culminated in the gruesome murder of Ginger Gasaway? Or was he driven by his internal demons into becoming the prolific serial killer that he claims to be? Of one thing this reader can be sure of, I am certainly glad that he is in prison for life without the possibility of parole!!!

Summary: Not Just for True Crime Fans
If you're not ready to read a book at one setting don't buy this book. The story was so well written you will feel as if you are working with the detective every step of the way. This book follows the investigation by Sergeant Rick Reed of confessed serial killer Joseph Brown. Reed gives you an insiders view of law enforcement and a complicated legal system but somehow makes it easy to understand. The story details a series of gruesome murders from beginning to end. Compelling work! A must read!

Summary: The author sails to new horizons with Pinnacle Studio 9 Visual Quickstart Guide!
I've read numerous technical books on many subjects and have never sailed through the software as smoothly as with this book.
If you're looking for a tutorial that can whiz you through the subject matter with ease and accuracy this is it! No matter where you wish to refer back to, you can do it without reading the whole chapter (as with other tutorials). Quickstart is the name however I feel it should be named Quick referrence.
Best investment I've made in a while. I'm making movies that are in awe at my office. I've been told they have been made professionally.
Summary: Excellent book
Simply put, read this book and you will definitely be able to produce excellent movies.
The book can be read from start to finish or just dip in to where the specific information is. The book is written so both ways work. The clear instructions enable even a novice to be proud - even amazed at what they can do.
Two days after reading this book I put a mini movie on the internet! If I can, you can!

Summary: Now, Studio 9 Plus is covered
As an owner of the author's Pinnacle Studio 8 book, I waited to buy what I anticipated to be his Pinnacle Studio 9 Plus book. But wait no more. A supplemental chapter covering the 9 Plus features - PIP, Pan and Zoom, and Chroma Key, is avaiable at http://www.doceo.com/studio9.html under "Click here to download free chapter on new features of Studio Plus", and now I have the equivalent of the Studio Plus 9 book.
I agree with the other reviewer's comments and no point in repeating them here, except to say that for me the best parts about the author's presentations are the illustrative examples.

The author has done a great job taking one of his western characters and bringing it into today's world of conflict. It was one of his best. I could not put it down once I started reading. I hope this is the beginning of a new character.
Summary: One of best books I have ever read
This is awesome book related to current events, far left media, and even back to events of Viet Nam War. Like most of Johnstone's books, it is also a "pager turner". I look forward to another with the main characters in the near future. I hope millions read this book.

Summary: A Unique Serial Killer
I read this 592 page book in less than two days because it was so in-depth, well written, and just plain interesting.

Richard Ramirez is the most unique serial killer that I have ever read about. Unlike most serial killers who have a "preferred" victim (ie, Blond, Female, and/or young), Ramirez was an equal opportunity rapist/killer. With Carlo's book, readers get inside the mind of Ramirez and are offered an up close view of the crimes. As a result, readers will most likely never sleep with a window open or an unlocked door again...irregardless if they live in the big city or small town.

Fascinating and interesting. From the crimes, to the trial, to the Ramirez "groupies." Definitely a must-read for true crime fans.
Summary: Enter Nightmare
What is it that makes a serial killer tick? And what exactly is it that makes the public fascinated with them while fearful of them? Richard Ramirez, infamously known as the Night Stalker, is in a breed of his own. One of the most dangerous and feared serial killers in America, Ramirez and his crimes still haunt the public mind today as his murderous spree did in the mid-1980s. Philip Carlo's book about Ramirez's life and crimes is extremely thorough and well-written, a quick-paced nightmare of a read.

Richard Ramirez became known as the Night Stalker because his crimes occured at night; he would sneak into his victims' houses while they were sleeping and attack them. His rampages were never quite the same, making him an unusual serial killer who didn't always follow the same MO, but ensuring that he was all the more difficult to track because investigators wouldn't tie his crimes together. Except for homicide detectives Gil Carrillo and Frank Salerno (of Hillside Strangler fame) who were convinced that the variety of crimes committed in quiet L.A. neighborhoods were the work of one man. Their task force was responsible for finding evidence to link these crimes and capture the man resopnsible for the string of robberies, rapes, murders, and attempted murders.

Carlo's book is divided neatly into different sections, creating suspense for the reader as he begins with vivid recreations of the Night Stalker crimes, then springboards into Ramirez's youth and finally into his capture and trial. Ramirez's crimes terrorized the Los Angeles area, but also mesmerized legions of people. A known Satanist, Ramirez instilled fear in not only his victims, but many who came in contact with him. For others, especially young women (including a juror), he was a beautiful, dangerous man they wanted to embrace and fight for, beliving him innocent of the crimes. "The Night Stalker: The Life and Crimes of Richard Ramirez" is a spellbinding book that weaves a complete picture of Richard Ramirez and recreates an unbiased look at his capture and trial and the mystery that surrounds him still.
Summary: The Night Stalker
If one wants to seriously get into the mind of a serial killer this is a must have best buy. Phillip Carlo presents facinating background with this piece. It isn't often a writer can take me there so I'm scared to turn off the light but this book did it. The book reads like a novel, I couldn't put it down, and was sad to discover there weren't about 10 more from the author I could purchase. Richard Ramirez is captured so expertly you'll think you know him by the last page. Did you like "In Cold Blood'? Then you must read "The Night Stalker"

Summary: Interesting story, poorly written book
While the story itself is interesting, the book is far too long and not very well written. What should have been a short-story is stuffed with unrelated information to turn it into a book.

And, the author uses words without knowing their definitions. (such as podium). He also continuously referred to law enforcement officers as "cops." This is unprofessional and degrading.

The every other chapter thing was very annoying. He wrote different parts of the story in alternating chapters. It jumped around more than a soap opera.

And, it was biased against the defendant, which was irritating. He kept referring to the defendant by her surname, but other people by their first names. It was obvious that he was de-personalizing her. His interjections to dialogue was strange and inappropriate.

The story about the reporter was unrelated to the case and totally unnecessary. It's like he made a deal with her to include her in his book if she gave him some information she'd gleaned. It was distracting and boring.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I expect that it will be the last.
Summary: Mr Phelps does it again !
I became a fan of Mr Phelps after his first book. I look forward to his next publication. I loved his latest book. He does a great job of getting into the mind of the killer. I'm fascinated on how these killers think. The author does a great job describing the unbelievable events that took place.

Summary: important work
Mr. Phelps does it again. With tireless research and scholarship, he dealves into the mind of the serial killer with curiosity and an appropriate dose of compassion. Trying to come to some understanding and perspective, these horrific crimes are explored with the author holding his hand at our elbow and talking us quietly through them. The details are revealed with the skill of a mystery writer but the narrative presents these people as compelling characters in a real life drama. The mother in this story is a victim as well and as Mr. Phelps digs deeper into the minds of these serial criminals it seems increasingly important that we pay attention. In a world that lives in the shadow of terrorism, and a society that seems to be producing sopciopathic behavior in increasing volume, it might be worth our while to consider these crimes and criminals. Written with tremendous journalistic detail, Phelps manages to maintain a human voice and present these events as the awful human dramas they are. Having a writer with the skills of Mr. Phelps reveal these crimes to the reader is much like experiencing some of the great literature of war. We read it so that we might that much more treasure peace. I hope he keeps up this good work. This is a compelling and significant story, told with great skill. Congratulations for this important work.

Summary: Liquid Edition for Windows
Generally speaking, the one thing that anger's most software owners is the manual. User documentation, in many cases, is written by the same people who write the underlying code of the program. Rarely do these highly intelligent people understand what it is like to really use the product. That means, while your documentation may be technically accurate, it's organization, context, appearance and overall utility pretty much sucks. While the 1000 page manual that ships with Liquid Edition is not quite as bad as I just portrayed, I can say its utility is "less than stellar."

Now, for those of us who still like to rummage through the printed page, I am so glad to see a book that is written by a film maker (who by the way) works for Pinnacle and knows this product probably better than he knows himself.

If you are reading this review, you are most likely an (avid) user of Pinnacle Liquid Edition. <sorry... I couldn't pass up that pun>. This book is an absolute must. In fact, this book should replace your official Pinnacle manual because it just makes more sense.

This book is not a tutorial, but Paul Ekert uses graphics and text to communicate almost as if he were snooping over your shoulder and giving you direct instructions on how to accomplish your task.

Kudos to Paul for writing the book. It needs to be part of your Liquid Library.
