Summary: Touching Lives Through Faith & The Power of Prayer
Don Piper, a minister in Texas, has recounted his vehicle accident and death experience in written form. This book can be an uplifting tool to anyone that has been in a severe accident that requires a long road to recovery, anyone that is facing a terminal illness or someone that has lost a loved one and need reminding that Heaven is real.

Don Piper does an excellent job of recounting the events of his accident and road to recovery. He has not sugar coated anything. This book is his testimony and it aids in his obvious purpose in life at this time. He has been and will continue to be an inspiration and light of hope to the hopeless or those that are at the end of their rope. He provides biblical scipture where necessary and applicable. He also highlights actual situations where his testimony has been a blessing to someone else. He also gives credit to the awesome doctors and medical team at Houston's Herman Hospital.

Chapter titles are: The Accident, My Time in Heaven, Heavenly Music, From Heaven to Earth, Earth to Hospital, The Recovery Begins, Decisions and Challenges, Pain and Adjustments, Endless Adjustments, More Miracles, Back to Church, Opening Up, The Clasping Hand, The New Normal, Touching Lives, Finding Purpose, Longing for Home, and The Why Questions.

This book is not a debate of "near death experiences", overly preachy or pushy. It is simple, from the heart, and factual. It is a fine example of the power of prayer. It is just Don Piper telling the reader what happened to him.

Summary: this story was written by a woman, not Watty Piper
This story was originally written as "The Pony Engine" by Mabel C. Bragg. The Book "Little Engine That Could" is merely "RETOLD" by Watty Piper. The story was written by a woman who NEVER gets credited for it--Mabel C. Bragg. It's a charming, timeless story and an American Children's literature classic not to be missed.
Summary: The Litle Engine That Could
I received the DVD promptly. It was in excellent condition and even contained a personal note from the sender. My experience with buying this item from this source was excellent!
Summary: The Little Engine That Could
If you like a book that is inspiring and builds self-confidence, "The Little Engine That Could" is a great book for you. I think that this book has a very good ending and it is good for any age. I think that this book builds self-esteem and confidence. In this book, some toys on a train can't get over the hill to be given to the children. They are stuck on the bottom of the hill until an engine will help them. Four engines came along, a shiny new one, a great big strong one, an old and tired one, and a little blue one. Will any of the engines help the toys? Will they make it to the children before the end of the day? You can find out by reading "The Little Engine That Could."

Summary: Required Reading for All Christians
Has it really been twenty years since John Piper first released Desiring God? I had been thinking recently about abiding in Christ and the nature of desire, as well as the upcoming Together for the Gospel conference which Piper will speak at, so I thought it would be a good time to re-read this modern-day classic.
For those who aren't familiar with it, twenty years ago a relatively little known young pastor from Minneapolis published a book that sent shock waves throughout the evangelical world and became the springboard for a ministry that now encompasses books, sunday school curricula, a radio show, and countless speaking appearances. What was this radical message? That God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him, that the chief purpose of man is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever.
This proposition, that God actually created us and commands us to seek pleasure in Him, is what Piper deemed "Christian hedonism." Although there are certainly seeds of this truth in the writings of Augustine, Edwards, Pascal, and Lewis (to name a few), Piper developed and brought it out full force onto the modern evangelical scene. It brought him both acclaim and controversy, great joy and great conflict.
It is impossible to condense a 350+ page intense theological tome down to a few paragraphs, and I will not even try. The book begins with a chapter on how he developed his theology, and then outlines a theological basis for Christian hedonism. He next has chapters devoted to the transforming impact that desiring God has on worship, love, scripture, prayer, money, marriage, missions, and suffering. This is no touchy feely devotional book-it has 15 pages of chapter end notes annotating quotations from Baxter, Pascal, Henry, Packer, Edwards, Lewis, Bounds, Mueller, Barth, Murray, Polycarp, Augustine, and many more. It references over 700 separate verses from the Bible.
Every Christian needs to read this book and deeply think through its truths. Even if you end up not agreeing with all of Piper's assertions, there is so much gold to be mined from the reading and considering that you will be richly blessed. And if you read it a few years ago, or twenty years ago, read it again! There was much gold that I had mined from the book years back but had frankly forgot; and there was much that I hadn't seen or appreciated as gold that I saw anew with a fresh reading. Read this book.
Summary: Glorifying God by enjoying Him forever
Piper reworks the Westminister Catechism a little bit for clarification and not to change it. This book then shows how our best interests lie in glorifying God. Piper calls this the principle of Christian Hedonism. Piper uses scripture to prove his point. He shows how this premise is in line with the theology of Augustine, Luther, the Reformers and C. S. Lewis. Piper then explains how the Christian Hedonist principle impacts every aspect of the Christian life covering suffering, service, missions and leadership. Piper does a magnificient and I think biblical job. He brings up strong counter arguments and refutes them with carefully chosen arguments. The book may sound like a dry theological treatise, but Piper is trying to share his joy with us. He quotes Hudson Taylor and Jonathan Edwards extensively. If you do not know these gentlemen, trust me enjoying God was at their center of their lives.

The book is challenging emotionally, intellectually and spiritually. The Christian life is full of joy and if your life is not, buy this book, read, repent and enjoy.
Summary: Life Changing
This book will challenge your thinking and change the way you view God, the church and other things that grow mundane in the normal Christian life. He uses a truckload of scripture, so it carries authority, yet he makes the information easy to understand and practical to live by. If you're pursuing a deeper relationship with God, or if you just want to know more about Christian living get this book.

Summary: I Feel Bad For Anyone Who Spends His Life So Worried
I found this book left in a hotel nightstand drawer in Washington DC last week, right atop a Gideon Bible. I wish I hadn't. I took Don't Waste Your Life With Me, to spare future strangers the nagging aggravation of being confronted with this offensive and unevolved theology. Others have summed-up this book more ably than I could, so let me merely comment that Don't Waste Your Life was disgusting. Anyone who truly thinks this way and believes this is flirting with a literal form of mental illness far outreaching mere scrupulosity. To take the old advice and "live each day as if it was your last" is meant to impel one to make use of the present to find greater joy. All Piper wants is to terrify his reader of what might come after death. Why worship a god that scares you so much? Why worship a god that exists to create beings so it may torture them eternally in the post-mortem state? This book is dismal and filled with scare tactics. I'm grateful I don't share a mindset like that of John Piper and I will now do what I can to forget everything I had the misfortune to see in this hideous waste of paper. My advice to you is don't read it. You're better off now without it. Don't Waste Your Life? Don't waste your time.
Summary: don't waste your money
This is quite possibly the most judgmental, negative, callous dismissal of non-Christians I have ever read. I think Christ would be saddened by Piper's 'ministry' which revolves around the idea that he, and he alone, gets to decide whose life is watsed and whose is not. Christ stood for loving acceptance of the unique gifts each of us brings-- not to herald one (mortal) man like Piper the ability to judge everyone and everything around him as worthy, or not. He's also obviously anti-intellectual, dismissing post-modernism and many of the ways that postmodern thinking has richened our cultural experience. He's clearly a scared and bitter white man with a major chip on his shoulder. I am very disheartened by the idea that these are the book 'Christians' are reading to inform their faith and practice.
Summary: PROBABLY THIS ONE
I HAVE COME TO BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE SHOULD READ A BOOK OR TWO BY PIPER. AND IF I WERE TO RECOMMEND ONE BY HIM IT WOULD PROBABLY BE THIS ONE. (OR "THE PLEASURES OF GOD")

I SAY THIS BECAUSE PIPER BRINGS A UNIQUE AND MUCH NEEDED PERSPECTIVE TO CHRISTIANITY. - MOSTLY IN THE WAY THAT HE TAKES THE EMPHASIS OFF OF YOU AND I AND PUTS IT BACK ON GOD.

ENJOY!

Summary: Born O'Hurley
I actually read the 2nd set of books 1st & then wanted to read the 1st set. These are really good books. Make sure you get all 4 of the O'Hurley's stories there great.
Summary: A complete mockery and repitition
if you've read old nora robert book's then you know what i'm talking about, it's not just this book, but all her books together, they have the same ultimate plot. it's basically like this; Either the hero or heroine know each other or they are introduced, then they act like they aren't attracted to each other, then the guy does something to make the gal go to bed with him, then they face some trials, like a killer coming closer or people opposed to heir love, then there's talk about marriage, and la-di-da, the nora roberts novel is complete!
i tried at least 16 of her books before i was convinced of this, i actually thought she could change so i kept buying and buying, i'm basically tired of the same plot and i've decided that i'll either burn these books or sell em, nora needs more imagination, wait lemme rephrase that, she needs a "LOT MORE IMAGINATION AND A LIFE".

So please nora, go watch more harry potter or something, even billy and mandy would give you a beautiful lesson in magination, most of your books are about sex.
Summary: Highly enjoyable story
As a NASCAR fan, the driver-family lifestyle storyline behind the premise of this book gave a certain depth and personal interest it. Widowed Abby and journalist Dylan came into their arrangement for him to live on her farm while he wrote an authorized biography about her late husband with negative preconceived notions about the other. Although they were totally prepared to hate each other, what puts this story notches above most other romance novels is that they treated each other with respectful tolerance and acceptance rather than hostile animosity. There was none of that annoying bickering and put-downs, but rather a desire to uncover the truth and understand each other. That's why this story, although a basic sweet romance novel, made a big impression on me. Very well-presented and realistically well-written with excellent characterizations.

Summary: Mining the Depths of the Glory of God
Piper mines the depths of the glory of God. He has been doing it for decades, and it is a testimony to the riches of God's glory that John continues, year after year, to bring up ever more precious treasure for us to behold and prize. This precious treasure of God's glory shines brightly in God Is the Gospel.

The subtitle is "meditations on God's love as the gift of Himself," which is an apt description of the book. Building on many of his previous works, Piper leads us through a multitude of facets showing that all of creation and redemption, all of the good news of the gospel, all of God's gifts and graces, are focused on one shining goal: for us to delight in and display God's glory for all eternity.

Along the way, he covers the importance of proclaiming God's glory, the illumination of His glory within our soul, its purpose in sanctification, the proper view of God's gifts to us, and God's glory as our ultimate and final hope and desire in heaven. He shows how easy it is to focus on the gifts and not the Giver, but how vitally important it is for our focus to be always on God.

This short quote shows the heart and soul of the book:

All the gifts and rewards and miracles have come for one great reason: that you might behold forever the glory of God in Christ, and by beholding become the kind of person who delights in God above all things, and by delighting display his supreme beauty and worth with ever-increasing brightness and bliss forever.

God Is the Gospel is a passionate trumpet call for us to see that all the Gospel in all its beauty is meant to bring us to worship the One who died to bring it to pass.

Summary: What else could it be?
I think the title just about sums it all up! Another phenomenal work by John Piper. Warning: if you read it, you'll be intensely dissatisfied with human-centered gospel presentations! And that's not bad at all.

What's so good about forgiveness of sins?---seeing and savoring God himself!
What's the benefit of eternal life?---seeing and savoring God himself!
What makes heaven spectacular?---seeing and savoring God himself!
What is the end goal of salvation and all God's gracious blood-bought gifts?---seeing and savoring God himself!!!

If God is God (and He is), then how could He create something more wonderful than Himself? "For from Him and to Him and through Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen"--Romans 11:36
Summary: Piper at it again...
Piper is all about seeing God for who he is and I feel like when I've read one of his books I've read them all...but, I still read them all. He does a great job of going after the simplicity that the Gospel is God. It is a person. It is not abstract. I've used this book as part of my devotions, not taking big bites, but chewing on some of Piper's little nuggets. Enjoy.

Summary: Poor
If I wanted a hack job commentary on Johnathan Edwards and CS Lewis, next time I will try to find someone who is a little more insightful than Mr Piper. Format: Quote, restate, weak commentary, then another quote. People pay him to do this?
Summary: Piper at his best!
Piper is one of my favorite authors. I have also heard every sermon he has on available for audio on his website. I've heard and read a lot of his work. He says he really only has one message and that is "To seek and spread a passion for the glory of Christ to the joy of all peoples." This book is a new view on that. I've owned this book for a while and prayed that God would let me read this when it would affect me most. He did just that. I pray that would be your prayer as well. When that happens, God will make His Name sweet in your heart and beautiful on your lips. If you are struggling with your desire for God, first go to Him in prayer. Than go to His Word. Then go to your pastor, your family, and friends. Then read this book. God will reach you in your time of struggle and in your time of blessing. In Job 1:21, right after hearing of all the troubles the LORD brought on him, Job proclaimed, "Naked I came into this world and naked I will return. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, may the Name of the Lord be praised!" Praise God in both blessing and suffering. He is blessing you with both, so thank Him and praise Him in return. Let Him teach you this lesson through John Piper in this book!
Summary: Practical!
One element of this book that I found to be very useful was the practical/direct instruction it offers on its various points. For example, Piper will spend a chapter showing how the Word of God is necessary in the fight for joy, and then the next chapter goes into strategies for actually reading and meditating on the Word of God. He then does the same process for prayer. Much of Piper's writing is of a deep, theological nature, chapter after chapter, and it was refreshing for there to be hands-on application sprinkled throughout the whole book.

Summary: 90 Minutes in Heaven
I had hoped for more, based on the title. It was interesting and reassuring to hear the author's experience "in Heaven."
However, what overshadowed the entire book was his whining about his injuries and road to recovery. The focus here was clearly a telling of his difficulties on earth. It would have been more inspirational had he focused on his "90 Minutes in Heaven."
Summary: Absolutely amazing book
I dont want to spoil if for anyone but this book is an amazing story; sure makes you hold on a little more loosely to life. There were 3 or 4 places where I exploded with emotion listening to his description of Heaven and that experience.
Summary: 90 days in Heaven
A wonderful book I couldn't put down. I was touched to my soul by the authors experiences.
