Summary: Wonderful
This is an excellent book. Like many of the reviewers, I have been frustrated over the years by the contradictory recommendations of the various teachers, teaching methods and authors. Nicklaus and Hogan say keep the ball in the same position off your left instep for all clubs. Harvey Penick, Tommy Armour (and Jim Hardy) say move it back as you go from driver to the short irons. Byron Nelson and Harvey Penick say you should stand as close to the ball as possible. A recent instructor told me to stand further away and lean over more. What's going on? Now I know. Different types of swings have different requirements. I quickly realized that I had been wandering back and forth between the two types of swings, sometimes hitting good shots and having a good round, sometimes even a good week, but soon losing it. Jim Hardy gives advice that is specific to the two types of swing. My only complaint is that there is not enough information to determine what type of swing would work best for me, but I was so impressed by the book that I bought the tapes. He must have realized that this was a weakness of the book. In the first tape, Hardy has Tom Pernice, Jr. demonstrate the amount of shoulder turn necessary for the one plane swing: the left shoulder has to be able to turn right under the chin, the right shoulder pointing up at the sky. I'm afraid that I'm just not this limber (I could never do yoga with my friends who are into it). So my decision seems to be made. This didn't surprise me too much, because in the past couple of weeks, I've been trying both types of swing, and while I never slice with the one plane and I've hit some great shots, I don't seem to hit it quite as far (and I've hit a few vicious hooks with it). The two plane swing it will have to be.
Summary: Great Book about 2 diff. basic swings
Just to let ROBCHG and everyone else know... Tiger Woods HAD a 2 plane swing while Butch Harmon was his swing coach. So, when he was younger and up till he switched swing coaches (to Hank Haney)he did have a 2 plane swing. He recently switched his swing to a 1 plane swing when he hired Hank Haney on as his new coach. There isn't one day that goes by that some golf magazine or show doesn't compare his 2 different swings side by side. His current, and better swing, is a one plane swing. Overall, this book is great for a golfer to sort out his swing type and work on the fundamentals for that type.
Summary: Helpful, Great Insight with confusing presentation
I saw an ad on GOLF channel for the DVD ($100) while on vacation. I bought the book immediately on my return. I first read many of these reviews. They come from different knowledge and experience levels analogous to the 1 and 2 plane swing differences. I discovered that my woods were more 1-plane and my irons more 2-plane (actually 3-plane due to a hitch at the top). So, if I tried a tip for all my clubs my woods or irons, one would improve while the other would deteriorate. Now I know why. The next 2 weeks in my after-work league I tried to stick with only the 1-plane swing for all my clubs. My game was shorter by half a club, but more consistently playable. I shot my best 2 scores this year (by 3 strokes--it's a nine hole league), and it should have been even 2 better except for a bad putting day.

I agree that after differentiating between the two types of swings and helping the reader determine which they have (or want), it would be clearer if everything about one swing would be placed together, followed by everything about the other. The current layout makes you work for the information pertinent to the path you choose to follow. Regardless, a great insight and help to me. (P.S. I might now try 1-plane for woods and 2-plane for irons again--but with the understanding of what applies to each.)

Summary: Everyone has to start some where.
I do not know about you. But I can study math a lot better if the book has a hard cover. This first chapter assumes you are coming from ground zero and is good to read just to brush up or see if there is anything new, that you missed originally. There is a smooth transition and a gradual complexity as you go from the fundamentals through the subject. Now some people will complain that it is not all practical or applied. This was not designed as a course for practical or applied. However it sure helps when reading other books tat can only explain tings in at least rudimentary math. Even the fundamentals of trig are needed to follow The Ascent of Man by Jacob Bronowski ISBN: 0316109339. Now I call that practical.

Summary: Inspirational for this non-mathematician
I am not a mathematician, aspiring mathematician, scientist or otherwise left-brain person. I came across the concept of Phi from The DaVinci Code (what a tiresome read that was...) and simply wanted to know more about it. This book was perfect! I too have purchased many books on mathematics in my quest to learn more and the more I read the other books, the more I liked this one.

Mario Livio's approach is humble, his style direct, his concepts thorough and his examples concise. The book would be endless if he delved deeply into any one of the numerous references he provides. His quick references to the who, when and what of phi-related events were blessedly short and sweet. What references there are to god(s) are not in the least imposing or suggestive; they are historically relevant and important to note when contemplating the how's and why's of periodic developments.

I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about phi. If nothing else, the author provides many references to other books that are focused on specific areas of mathematics and physics.
Summary: Overcomplete, but also the best and most concise work on the number phi
Well, when it comes to information about the number phi, I would say this book is the only game in town. It has flaws and is over-complete however and that is the reason I gave 4 and not 5 stars.
It starts off too slow in a history of some key-figures in the number phi. We all know about Kepler and Durer, and I would say the book would have been better off just dealing with examples that deal, or might deal, with phi.
A strong point of the book is that it covers some interesting examples of well-known cases that were supposed to have the secret of this number built-in in their construction, such as the works of Beethoven and the great pyramid, but after scrutinizing, failed the test. To some readers these examples were not relevant. I do not agree; since you hear them so often quoted, in e.g. Da Vince code (were the teacher said wrongfully that phi was deliberately used in them) it was a good idea to include them here to dismiss these errands once and for all. This way, the book gives a good total picture of what phi is, and is not about. Phi was simply not used in the pyramids nor by Vitruvius, although all too often we read otherwise. I myself have read De Architectura and Vitruvius only talked about nice proportions that were important in architecture, for which he used fractions that didn't even come close enough to phi to suppose humans have a built-in intuition for this proportion.
Of course phi is a number that really does appear in nature. As most of us know by now, phi can be found in rose leaves, fractals and more. Interested as I was on where phi can be found and how, I was not disappointed in this book. The writer explains all these examples well and although this section only comprises the middle of the book, it alone is worth the buy.
I do agree however that some subjects are a bit beyond the scope of the book, especially the last part. Examples are whether maths is discovered or invented. Interesting as these questions are, they really belong to the philosophy of maths and I would recommend the readers who are interested in these subjects to check out books written by S. Shapiro.
My conclusion would be: if you want to know about phi, this book is still the best around
Summary: Interested in the number, not religion
As an aspiring mathematician, I've been reading pretty much any book I can grab at the book store that has to do with mathematics. Phi is a number that has caught my attention before, and I was looking for a thorough look at different places where the number crops up. I was not, however, looking for any sort of religious discussion.

I wish I had known before I bought the book that the word "God" frequently cropped up in the book. If I had known, I probably would not have bought it. I was looking for a book of mathematics, not speculation into whether god is a mathematician. If that sort of discussion interests you, perhaps you'd like the book. However, if you are like me, hopefully you will not waste your money on it; get it from the library or find another book about phi.

Summary: Not that appealing
For some reason, this magazine doesn't draw me in the way I expected it to. It arrives, and I flip through it, barely reading much, even though my husband and I travel quite a bit. I was hoping for articles with a unique perspective and brilliant, unusual photos of the world's destinations. Instead, the magazine is quite busy, very text/column heavy, so it's hard to skim and find items of interest. And the photos are beautiful, but not gripping. Honestly, I enjoy reading airline magazines more than this one.
Summary: Terrible Subscription Dept
I ordered this magazine thru Amazon three months ago, and STILL haven't received a single issue. I've emailed their subscription department to no avail. They have my money, but i don't have a magazine!
Summary: Great resource for the intrepid travler!
I love this magazine great travel ideas, and fun to read even if you never make the trip! A recent issue on the Yucatan really helped make our vacation there so much more interesting. We visted ruin sites we would have never seen other wise. This magazine and "Tourist in the Yucatan" (Thriller/adventure) really made my vacation special.

Summary: Great writing!
This book was a good choice to read after recently finishing "Crazy in the Cockpit." I confess I skipped/skimmed through the more technical aviation-related sections, concentrating on the travel narrative aspect. Makes for good bedside reading.
Summary: What a way to go!
I loved William Least Heat Moon's "Blue Highways" describing his travels on the back roads of America. Now Mariana Gosnell has done an aerial version of it and has done it equally well. I had two childhood dreams. I'll never be a cowboy but, even at my advanced age, I can be a pilot. Until then, please take me with you on your next odyssey Mariana
Summary: wonderful yarn about flying across the United States
The Luscombe isn't my favorite lightplane, but it is Gosnell's, and she writes about it with such affection that I'd like to fly one. The trip evidently takes place in the late 1970s, because Jimmy Carter is president. (She visits Plains GA and the largest peanut-butter factory in the world.) Gosnell is a journalist, so she goes out of her way to visit unlikely places and meet interesting people. (Among them is the crew of the man-powered Gossamer Condor, whose record-breaking flight she is on hand to document.) I feel sorry for the lad who quit reading on page 10. He missed a wonderful yarn, and one that deserves a place on the bookshelf of any lightplane pilot. -- Dan Ford

Summary: Easy and Fun
"Geometry The Easy Way" really does live up to its name. I had tried "Geometry for Dummies" before but I was unable to realistically teach myself the basics with that book alone. (Maybe I needed Geometry for morons!" "Geometry the easy way" started out with simple concepts and slowly built upon those. The chapters were short and had numerous exercises that were very helpful. I actually discovered that geometry was fun-now that's a strange concept to grasp!I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to teach themselves the basics of geometry in a short amount of time.
Summary: Best High School Level Geometry Book Ever Written!
To often people think they can obtain success in math/physics by skipping High School Geometry, but it just does not work.
This book is written so you can truely teach yourself the subject, and it does so without the holes (leaps in logic) that standard high school texts do so as to 'leave something for the teacher to teach'.
This is what should be the standard high school geometry text!

Summary: Great Geometry Tool
I am teaching myself advanced math. I read the entire book, cover to cover, and did each problem in the book. I found it extrememly useful, and I now feel I have a very good grasp on geometry. There are some minor flaws, as already explained in other reviews, but overall, I would highly recommend this book.

Summary: Great text for high school or college
I had used this text in a geometry class I took in college as a math major (class was not required, just needed hours to fill). After using this book and finishing the course, I found it to be much better than the geometry book I used in high school.

This book, like many high school texts, breaks geometry down into constructions using only a straight-edge and compass and then introduces definitions and theorems (some proved, some left to prove as exercises). The part that hooked me in was the fill-in-the-blank-step proofs that were partially completed but let the reader finish so that he or she will become familiar with "Statement/Reason" geometric proofs.

Finally, after ten chapters which deal with such topics as quadrilaterals, parallel lines, polygon areas, similar and congruent triangles, and circles, the authors introduce logic by methods of truth tables, Euler circles, and tautologies.

Last but not least, a chapter connecting algebra to 2-Dimensional (Cartesian) geometry offer the bridge between the "abstract" world of algebra and the "concrete" world of geometry.
