Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Thin story, laughable details This book is meant to be a sci-fi story set in the very far future - but is actually a B-movie from the 60s. In the first 5 chapters you're presented with 3 dozen names (90% of which have no significance and are dissolved as the story progresses) and just about every astronomical irregularity thought possible. The author's obsession with giving tasteless names to characters was somewhat overwhelming. Keeping track of them is irritatingly useless, especially when reaching so far into the future you still encounter names like Windy and Marty (Did these names exist 1000 years ago? No, so why should they exist 1000 years into the future?!). The names were given with no consideration to the personality they're supposed to label - that said, most characters don't have any personality to speak of, which makes matters even worse. Interaction and dialog between the characters is often worse than in porn movies. Unchallenging even in the most basic form - if mankind is supposed to evolve over the course of several thousand years, this book definitely is not showing for it. The accessories, tools and gadgets used by the characters suggest that the author has not been in contact with modern civilization for over a century (Static on a view panel? Wrist-light?! what kind of cheap drugs are you on, man?!). When it comes to Sci-Fi, details are everything. A story may be good, but if the plot is plagued with bad details, it'll fail to convince the reader. Such was the case for me. My time was ill spent and I'm thinking of sueing Mr. McDevitt for it. :) Summary: Run of the Mill All seven people aboard a vessel, including the captain, mysteriously disappear. A search by other vessels fails to reveal what happened to them. Years later, an antiques dealer and his intrepid assistant, who are interested in objects that were on the vessel, find that someone else is attempting to get the same objects. After several attempts on their lives, they finally figure out why these objects are important and what happened to the missing people. There is a classic confrontation scene between the heroes and the villain. Does this sound like a run of the mill mystery? Well it is. So how was this novel nominated for the Nebula award, the annual award of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America? Well, the trappings of science fiction were added on. The empty vessel is a space ship. The time is in the far future. The McGuffin, the reason for the disappearance, is something that present-day science has yet to discover, but it could just as well have been illegal proceeds of some kind. But none of these trappings do anything to illuminate the characters or the society in which this adventure occurs, or our own present-day society. Nor are the plot devices so clever that they are worth reading about for themselves. In fact the plot is not just pedestrian but repetitious. For example not once, but twice the heroes' vehicle is sabotaged by the bad guy. You'd think smart detectives would have learned after the first time! Finally, the heroes themselves are quite insipid. There are some interesting elements, like the presentation of two sides of a social argument that is a driving force in the novel, but after presenting both sides the author steps back and provides an intervening event that removes anyone (including the reader) from responsibility for actually making a choice. If you need something to read on a long airplane ride and nothing else is available, this book may satisfy your requirement. But if the ride ends before you reach the end, you won't miss anything by leaving this book on the plane. Summary: Jack McDevitt- Polaris and Seeker If you like Nora Roberts, you will probably like these books. But if you prefer characters to caricatures, Hard SF that is believable, and plots that have depth, spend your money elsewhere. I decided not to even finish Seeker. These are pulp novels, like Roberts. Those seeking literature in a SF format will be disappointed. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: disappointing I really wanted to find out about the Santo Daime movement, and while this book has a lot of information, there is just way too much of the very mental ramblings of the author. While in many books this is a good thing, here it is a real distraction. Summary: The only worthwhile book on Santo Daime in English There is much on the internet about Santo Daime, almost none of which accurately portrays the church or the religious and spiritual significance of the Daime. This book, however, is a deep discussion of the church, the doctrine and the Daime which offers a clear picture from a man who has traveled far on the spiritual path of the Santo Daime. Interested people, please read this book before reading anything else. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Polaris Atv Owners Workshop Manual A great read. This book showed me how to easily repair my ATV. The book had much information on the utility line up, but lacked in the sport/performane sections. Although I own both sport and a utility atv. The utility section gave me great steps and easy to read procedures in mantaining my quad. Summary: This book covers only up to model year 1997 I purchased this book in August or September of 1999. InNovember when I obtained my copy, I discovered that it only coversmodel years up to 1997. Since my machine is a 1998 model this book was of little use to me. Be forewarned, just because this book was last printed in November 1999, it DOES NOT cover the model years of 1998, 1999, or 2000. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Harrowing tale of Arctic survival Mr. Parry tells the story of the Polaris expedition in a highly readable fashion. Gleaning facts from the sailor's journals and court testimonies, he paints the grim picture of what occured on this tragic journey. Although C. F. Hall had grand plans to reach the North Pole, he was thwarted on many levels. Most of the men he wanted along on the journey were passed over and others placed under his command had little regard for this self-taught man. Hall had the hardiness to succeed and hard won knowledge of survival in the inhospitable Arctic climate, but he was undermined again and again by men who had their own agendas. Conflicts arose along lines of nationality and difference of opinion as to the more important tasks of the expedition - finding the North Pole or scientific research of the region. Hall dies a terrible death at the hands of a murderer. Soon after, discipline falls by the wayside and eventually it is "every man for himself". Interspersed with the facts, Mr. Parry has placed vivid descriptions of the Arctic panorama, from the beauty of the aurora borealis to the thunderous sounds of the colliding icebergs. The reader feels as if he is there with the crew as they endure unthinkable hardships. This is a first-rate story of impossible odds and the will of man to survive. Summary: Enthralling example of history more exciting than fiction As a huge fan of American history, I found the book a wonderful discovery of a virtually unknown expedition and a superlative example of how the excitement delivered in historical literature can far exceed the most imaginative fiction. The Polaris Expedition story is compelling on its own merit, but Richard Parry has enhanced the saga by skillfully weaving together the pervasive risks of polar exploration, the failings of human nature, and the hubris of 19th Century Western culture. Demonstrating the talents of a master craftsman, Parry is to be lauded for buttressing a truly incredible series of events with vivid images of nature that elevates the book from good history to great literature. Skip the "reality shows" or your favorite edition of CSI and read this book! Neither my wife nor I could "put the book down" and we genuinely anticipate a suspenseful screenplay and block-buster movie that will inevitably fall short of the book. There is just too much scenery, intrigue, suspense, and action in "Trial by Ice" to squeeze into a two-hour movie. Summary: Enjoyable reading I am a avid reader of Non-fiction only so when I find a book that can combine fact with good reading i highly recommend it. The author did an excellent job presenting the facts while adding interest in the use of his words. Good riviting story that i couldn't put down. Summary: |
