Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Same Old Chilton's, but Good to Have Around This is more a repair/replace manual than a trouble shooting manual. So much of these cars is now so computer driven and electrical that a shop that has the right instruments really needs to trouble shoot problems via the computer. Otherwise, this manual is great for a lot of basics as well as wiring and capacities. I use the manual (and the other ones I have for my other cars) for brakes, transmission, cooling, etc., all the time. Good book to have for the "oak tree" mechanic. Summary: Not very helpful as a trouble shooting manual I recently ordered this book to help me troubleshoot an electrical problem with my 1997 Grand Prix. I am quite disappointed with the quality of this book. It is printed on newprint paper (very low quality), and feels quite flimsy. More importantly, since this book covers such a wide range of GM "W cars", it contains very little specific information to help me with my problem. All in all I found this to be a waste of money. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Classic History Francis Parkman was an eccentric Harvard graduate whose life work was the struggle of the British and French for North America (although he is better known to the general reader for his youthful exploration of the West described in The Oregon Trail). He was fluent in French and was assiduous in his investigations of primary sources. He also had a gift for lyrical narration (see the last paragraph of The Conspiracy of Pontiac, which describes the fate of the "forest hero"). His perspective on the American Indian was realistic. He knew the Indian and respected him, but also realized his flaws and this has made him persona non grata among some modern circles. That's what describing an Indian village as a "motley concourse of barbarians" will do! However, the reader may learn for himself in this book the fate of the captives from the fort at Michillimackinac and that of the pathetic one-room schoolhouse in the Ohio River valley and see if the 18th century tribes did not truly have a potential for utter savagery. Summary: The "Original" American West - in Two Volumes This volume is a reader's delight, for it presents not one but two of Francis Parkman's classic works: The Oregon Trail and The Conspiracy of Pontiac. Rightly hailed as America's greatest historian, in The Oregon Trail Francis Parkman relates a journey to the 1840's American West - undertaken for the express purpose of living among "real" American Indian tribes of the Great Plains before their way of life passed forever. By this experience Parkman hoped to better understand and relate what eastern tribes had so tragically fought for and lost in the preceding century's struggle for the continent. The Oregon Trail is a great book in its own right, and has been reviewed by this reader previously (see more in "About Me/Other Reviews"), but the primary focus of this review is Parkman's study of a crucial chapter in the development of North America as we know it today: the disastrous consequences France's defeat in Canada would bring to the remaining eastern tribes. For this event would inexorably lead to the explosion of the English colonies across lands heretofore held by them under French "dominion". While the Iroquois Nations had long maintained an uneasy alliance with the English as they pushed their way into the western reaches of New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia, those further west knew what the defeat of the French would bring: utter destruction. The Ottawa, Ojibwa, Pottawattami, Delaware, Shawnee, Illinois, Sauk and Foxes had long fought the intrusion of the arrogant and land-grabbing English from Quebec to the Mississippi. Pontiac himself had fought beside the Marquis de Montcalm as he tried in vain to save New France from ruin during the French & Indian War. But at last, in the mid-1700s France finally capitulated to her English rivals, her hold on the North American continent broken forever. The only task left to the conquerors was to make their way across the Great Lakes, into the valleys of the Ohio, and down the Mississippi into the Illinois country to make their claim upon the former French forts and trading houses. For a brief time a singular leader and a dozen nations blocked their way: Pontiac and his assembled allies. Parkman sets the stage by briefly relating the history of France and England in America from the early 1600s-1760s, then meticulously details the source of the tribes' many grievances - grievances which would directly lead to Pontiac's bold attempt to decisively halt the English advance. Though doomed to ultimate defeat against the onslaught of English guns and armies, traders and pioneers, for a short time Pontiac's initiative was remarkably successful. He brought war to nearly all of western America at the same time - from the siege at Detroit to the forests outside the gates of Niagara, from upper Michigan and Wisconsin to the Ohio valley, into western Pennsylvania, Virginia and New York, down the many rivers and tributaries leading into the Mississipi. A dozen forts fell before him and hundreds of miles of frontier settlements emptied in terror. Parkman's work is perhaps the best chronicle of many of these tribes' last desperate fight for their lives and land. Those interested in the history of the struggles destined to come shortly to the tribes west of the Mississippi will derive much insight from Parkman's treatment of Pontiac's war. For his "conspiracy" was the original "last great battle" for the "American West" - 100 years before the battle for the further western Plains would come to an ignominious close. To understand Pontiac's war, the motives of both his people and the English and French, as well as the burgeoning force who would soon thereafter cast off their identity as "colonists" is to understand much of what would follow as American history. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Very Handy If you've ever had a Chilton repair book before, then you know that they are very handy and accurate. I own a 1986 firebird, and this book has helped me fix all of my little problems that I have had with it. examples: Fuel Pump, Alternator, Brakes, Oil, Radio Wiring, etc. If you need to know how to repair your firebird (any of the five engines, 2.4 2.8 3.1 5.0 5.7 and even the 3.8 turbo) then you'll find it in here, it even has the little tiny things included in it as well, such as fixing the convertible tops, taking apart the interior trim, and others as well. The only few bad things are that sometimes the book confuses some of the trim parts with the trim parts on the camaro, and sometimes the diagrams are a little hard to follow. However this book is still worth getting if you are into fixing your firebird yourself. Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Not for the average man! I bought this book thinking that it would tell me something about the problems I was having with my car. Not knowing that much about cars I was just as clueless after buying it as I was before. Maybe they should put somekind of warning on the cover saying just how much machanical knowhow you need to use this book. Summary: Very complete for the home mechanic This volume contains even more information than previous Haynes manuals I have used. It contains good, clear photographs of various parts of the car in place and partially dismantled, not just line drawings. I was pleasantly surprised to find information on how to get the "check engine soon" light to go out after changing oil and other service procedures. It also includes a pretty complete set of wiring diagrams. These are things not always found in car repair manuals for the do-it-yourselfer. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: good ----zeer hul vol ! Grtz Steven Summary: Solid Overview of Pontiac performance I was very familiar with Jim hand from various articles he has written that can be found on various Pontiac websites. This book stands out compared to other car books that it gives you practicle info on Pontiac engines and known combinations. The only critique I could give it, it is really more about "street" performance than MAX performance. But that was OK by me. Summary: Jim Hand knows his Pontiacs. Jim Hand is a well-respected authority on high-performance Pontiacs. I really identify with his scientific approach to basically getting the most for your money from what you have to work with, rather than throwing money at it until it goes fast. You'll find a lot of very good, useful information in his book. The book isn't a step-by-step assembly manual, nor a shopping list of speed parts. It's really all about putting together a matched and well thought-out combo for your Pontiac-powered ride. The book covers cams, carbs, intakes, heads, blocks, exhaust, cooling and ignition and generally simple, effective modifications, tips and tricks to tailor those things to your particular combo. You'll find a good bit of Pontiac engine development history in the front and a section on engine combos from the various Pontiac performance vendors around the country in the back. I really only have one even slightly negative thing to say about this book and maybe I'm just nit-picking. I feel the title isn't exactly accurate. The book is really more about building a fast, powerful, reliable and STREETABLE Pontiac, reflecting what Mr. Hand has done with his own 11.0 second station wagon. From the first paragraph on the first page, "...how to obtain high performance at the most reasonable cost." The title would lead you to believe you'll be learning how to build full-on dragster engines or something, which is not the focus of the book. I'd guess true "Max Perfomance" and "reasonable cost" are generally mutually exclusive. Luckily, I already had an idea what to expect from the book, being familiar with Jim Hand's car and having read all the online articles he's done along with a great many of his postings on Pontiac sites. I'm glad to say I wasn't disappointed. Thanks Jim for pouring your 50+ years Pontiac experience into the pages of this book. Summary: |
