Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Awesome Display There are two major kinds of power: physical power and social power. "Locker Room Nudes" is a book about men who have both. The rugby players of Stade Français Paris are the elite of the elite, one of Europe's premiere teams in one of its premiere sports. Playing one of the toughest and most physically challenging games in the world has honed their bodies to perfection, and their championship wins have turned them into gods among France's sporting crowd. They are almost a force of nature. "Locker Room Nudes" is a beautiful celebration of their power. This hefty book collects the (mostly) nude photos of the rugby players that have been taken by photographer François Rousseau for their annual wall calendar. The men are shown in the locker room as well as the weight room, the shower, the stadium, and even the toilet. The book's one flaw, as others have pointed out, is that it claims to present a "candid" view of these men. There is nothing "candid" about the photos -- each one is carefully posed and shot, usually (though not always) so the naughty parts are obscured. Besides, it's unrealistic to assume that the rugby team would spend so much time in the buff in real life. What IS true is that they are photographed in natural lighting, with no makeup, shaving, or "prettifying." They are often shown streaked with mud and sweat, as though they've just come in from a game. And it's impossible to deny that they are still achingly beautiful men. Ranging from lithesome models like Julian Hans (p. 128-135) to hulking man-mountains such as Ignacio Corleto (p. 20-21) and Regis Sigoire (p. 148), they represent every possible image of the ideal man. Yes, this book has aspects that some people don't like. The "atmospheric" shots of an empty hallway and locker room do distract from the nudes, but they take up so little of the book that it barely matters. I don't have any problem with the collection of head-shots that appear partway through -- after all, the face counts as a naked body part as well, and many of these men are very handsome. Photographing a man's face, so close that we can see every strand of stubble on his jaw, presents just as intimate an image as the same man's nude body. And, yes, there is a homoerotic undercurrent to many of the images: men are shown hanging out together in the nude, casually embracing, and wrestling on the muddy floor. Common sense says that most if not all of these men are straight. However, they must know that their photos have a large following among gay men, and it's kind of nice to see them acknowledging that. Besides, these rugby players do share a powerful bond of trust and camaraderie. They have won this much and come this far by putting their faith in each other. They have few secrets from each other. The fact that they feel comfortable enough to take off all their clothes and exchange a manly hug for the camera shows what a bloody good team they are. I don't believe there's anything sexual in that. "Locker Room Nudes" is above all, a display of raw beauty. Certain photos stand out. On pages 10 and 11, Daniel Browne strips off his shirt to reveal a torso that many athletes would kill for. Clement Poitrenaud strides up the stadium steps on p. 44-45, his flawless body streaked with sweat (or is it rainwater?) and we can almost hear the noise of the adoring crowd. Moise Santamaria kickboxes on p. 64-67, and fearlessly bares all in a defiantly erotic pose. On p. 98-99, the Bergamasco brothers, Mirco and Mauro, square off, their chiseled forms and curly hair making them look like they just stepped from an Olympian mural of ancient Greece. Fabien Galthie kisses a championship plaque on p. 103, drunk on power and glory. Yannick Larguet is caught running with the ball on p. 120-121, muscles taut, an athlete in his element. The jaw-droppingly gorgeous Frederic Cermeno visits the shower on p. 136-139, and I for one would pay big money for the privilege of toweling him dry. The soapy hot tub embrace between Regis Sigoire and Jeremie Ballais on p. 147 is so erotic that the two would have to work hard to convince people they weren't lovers. And, at the very beginning of the book, we see a dark room pierced by a doorway through which brilliant light spills. A naked man stands in the doorway, silhouetted; a second man is almost hidden in shadow to his right. The picture is an invitation to enter that doorway, to see what is merely being hinted at in the image. "Locker Room Nudes" is a fantasy given life. Flipping through these glossy pages, we can imagine that we are truly there, that we have been given the chance of a lifetime, that we are the honored guests of these strong, beautiful, confident men. That's real power. Summary: Beautiful book. The hype on this book is pretty huge. It lives up to MOST of it. The men/photos are beautiful and the overall quality of the book construction is wonderful. There could be some additional cutting edge/homoerotic pics. The price here on amazon is the lowest I have seen. Gay bookstores seem to jack the price up. Buy it here!! Summary: Coffe Table Book This is not what I would consider a coffee table book, but my friend Tim uses his as a ice breaker, when he first brings "special" friends over to his house. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Pictures are good and the stories are great! This is an amazing project, many of the stories could be a book unto themselves. I could identify with many of the women, others were foreign to me, but interesting. This would be a great gift for mothers, daughters, sisters. Most importantly, it's not just a photo book, but photos and essays together tell many, many stories. Reading them makes me feel connected to all women. Summary: More than just a coffee table book Too often the lives of woman are told from perspectives that make us look at the perspective and not the woman. The life stories of the women featured in this amazing book are the women we walk past, sit on the bus with and nod to every day. More than photos, this book takes us into the lives of women whose primary task everyday is to keep moving forward. No matter their beginnings or pasts, every woman in this book teaches us yet again about the unwavering perseverance of women. An outstanding book. Summary: American Woman One of the greatest books ever published, not only did it give me insight into my own world as a woman in today's society, but it also opened my eyes to how much we as women have accomplished in the past few years. I would recommend this book for every woman in America, and also there was just a great review in People magazine. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Female in the lens Richard Avedon selected a portfolio of women he has photographed over the last 60 years for "Woman in the Mirror.". Here are 125 images ranging from 1946 (Zazi, a street performer in Rome) to 2004, the year Avedon died. Some of the images have been published but many have not. The majority of photos are from Avedon's career as a fashion photographer - familiar faces like Dorian Leigh, Dovina, Jean Shrimpton, Penelope Tree and Suzy Parker (who is featured on the cover). Women from other walks of life are featured as well - actresses (Katharine Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Tilda Swinton, Marilyn Monroe), writers (Isak Dinesen, Marguerite Duras, Renata Adler), singers (Tina, Turner, Patti Smith, Janis Joplin, Maria Callas) and many more. And there's also Elton John in drag! Fifteen pages are reproductions from a "photographic fable" titled "In Memory of the Late Mr. and Mrs. Comfort" (1995) which features models in bizarre poses with skeletons. An essay by Anne Hollander covers the career of this fascinating photographer. Summary: Good photographs, poor design This is a book of excellent photographs from one of the great masters. The design of the book is so bad that almost all of the square or horizontal pictures are"cut". What a shame that the designer didn't understand what a book of photographs is. Summary: Elegance and Contextual Meaning: Avedon's Women In this large scale, elegant portfolio produced by Harry N. Abrams, Inc. the photographs from the last year of Richard Avedon's life are beautifully presented in full page, lush black and white prints. Between the years 1945 and 2004 Avedon focused his sensitive lens on women - famous women like Marilyn Monroe, models, artists, and ordinary women who captured his eye and imagination. The result here contained in a survey accompanied by a warm and informative essay by Anne Hollander is a stunning collection of Avedon's best attributes. Avedon was a fashion photographer and a much sought after portrait photographer. He composed photographs like opera settings, emphasizing elements of contrast that would set off the model. Yet he was also one of those photographers who was able to capture the confidence of his subjects, allowing a relationship of mutual trust to open views of women few other portraitists in the medium have been able to imitate. The final photographs in the book (from his last year in 2004) are portraits of two consummate artists in the music world - Mitsuko Uchida and Lorraine Hunt Lieberson - who are known for their preference for privacy. They are stunning achievements and are fitting homages to a fine photographic artist. Highly Recommended, Grady Harp, October 05 Summary: |
| Inside Out: A Personal History Of Pink Floyd

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: GOOD MARKS FROM ROMANIA! SUCCULENT, DELIGHTFUL, PRO-ROGER, LOTS OF BEAUTIFUL BAND PHOTOGRAPHS, UNVEILED FLOYD MYTHS... "INSIDE OUT" CAN BE FOLLOWED BY A GILMOURISH "OUTSIDE IN"? Summary: An entertaining read I bought this book from amazon 2 months ago and read it in the space of 3 days. I am a huge Floyd fan and there are not many books out there of any significance about the band. The book looks large but not as big as it looks (ie. lots of photos including 2 page photos and large spaced writing). The reason i give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it doesnt really tell you anything about the inspiration for any of the songs (one or two maybe) or what they are about and this is the kind of thing i love to read about. In fairness, Nick wasn't the song writer as such so maybe he isnt as aware of these bits as Roger or the other guys. Also I thought he glossed over certain albums and didnt give a huge amount of info on them. Finally, as i suspect Nick was trying to keep everybody happy he didnt really go into any great detail about the differences the band had (mainly Dave & Roger) when they were coming apart, which i think was a very difficult time for the band (from about 1978 till 1981). All in all though its an excellent read and really gives a feel for the band, especially in the early days with Syd and the early 70's when the band developed in to the band we know today. He is quite witty and it is very well written. What we need now is a Pink Floyd anthology similar to the Beatles one where they all put their spoke in and we get the full Floyd story. Summary: An In-Depth Look Being a fan of "Floyd" I really enjoyed the look from inside the band. I especially enjoyed the pre-Floyd look on the assimilation of the band. The photos are fantastic, printed on great quality of paper. I wish there was a bit more info. on Syd Barrett after he left the band. Other than that grrrreat!!I sincerely recommend it. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Stunning photography Amazing photos, important photos, and a wonderful treatment of a heart-breaking subject. This book should be read by everyone. Summary: Beautiful, beautiful book on an important subject... If you have a child from China, if you are interested in China, or if you just love good photography, this book is for you. What I liked best about it is that it captures, in black and white, the expressions of all sorts of children at SWIs-young girls and boys, children with medical issues, older children. And the expressions are so poignant-giggling, crying, looking scared (many), looking solemn, looking impish or happily playing dress up. If you ever need a boost during the long and sometimes frustrating adoption process or are questioning just why you are adopting, just thumb through the pages and look into the eyes of these lovely children. Kudos to photographer Richard Bowen and the Half the Sky Foundation for this terrific and important addition. Summary: Amazing book that you will cherish! I have purchased three copies of this book - my daughter is adopted and was supported by Half the Sky but you don't need either connection to appreciate the incredible photography and haunting, touching, straight to your soul photos in this gorgeous book. The photos are all black and white with very simple backdrops and incredible focus on detail, showing the children of China's orphanages as people with individual emotions. Every single photo is a new story told through the eyes of each child. By far a book I will treasure forever. Summary: |
