Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: awsome This book was easy to read and gave very understandable direction. On some of the knots, I wish they would have explained more on how to start and end the knots but still a great book overall. Summary: Greatly over-rated This book is not only outdated but it contains a lot of bad advice about knots. It shows numerous knots that have no place in the climbing world, leaves out others that are more useful, and has weak material about ropes. There are certainly better books on knots for climbers. Summary: Reliable info is only as good as one's adherence to it I'm happy to hear that Mr. Williams (dangerous information, January 15, 2000) suffered little more than discomfort and frustration at the hands of his Prusik and surviving, gained useful experience in the process. Let his lapse reinforce the quality of both the advice given and your ability to synthesize and apply it. Page 46: "If you use the Prusik to back up a rappel, make sure the sling that attaches the Prusik to the harness is short and always within easy reach. At least one climber has died because his sling was too long and locked up out of reach, stranding him on rappel." Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: an excellent, representative sample of Italian short stories The eight stories in this collection by Moravia, Pavese, Pratolini and other modern writers, have been selected as representative of contemporary Italian writing. The book presents the original Italian text and, on the opposite page, an English translation in a literal style, serving as an aid to reading the Italian more than as something to be read for its own sake. there are notes & biographies of the writers to help the student of Italian. The volume can also be used by Italians to improve their English skills. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: In the Castle of the Flynns: A Novel I enjoyed this book. I grew up, a Roman Catholic in Chicago, IL. I also attended Catholic schools through all my education. I feel this novel is well written and captivating. It shares the daily struggles and joys of a family with its dark side and its nurturing side. I would recommend this book. I have a concern that for someone not raised in Chicago, it may not be as enjoyable. Summary: Chicago natives, take note! Look at this list and see if any items bring back memories: Wieboldt's, "suntan lotion," Shedd Aquarium, forest preserves, "da boda ya," Belmont Avenue, trolley buses, Waveland Avenue, Wrigley Field, Ernie Banks, calling your mother "Ma," calling soda "pop." Well? If those make your past come blowing into your present, then this book is for you. Anyone who grew up in an ethnic working-class family around Chicago in the 50s and 60s will recognize these and the myriad other memory sparkers that appear in this book. The story is good too. Summary: Chicago and family Sitting around with Grandpa, being over-fed by Grandma, and loved by the whole crazy gang. Danny is orphaned, but his extended family takes charge of the young boy's life. His hero, Uncle Tom is always eager to talk with Danny and lavish attention upon him. The story meanders through the streets and alleys of the Chicago 1950's, full of a young man's adventurous spirit. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Best way to learn about the area This is such a useful book it compells a statement. If you visit the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area or North Carolina, or if you live there, this book is an extraordinary guide, written with a sensitivity to place, attractions, events, history, excitement of being there, which makes it a stimulating guide. I have passed places often, but only after I read about them in this book did I see them and experience them. She's done a first-rate job of writing about and explaining an area many people think they already know, but will now realize there is more to learn. Thanks. Summary: "The Best Way to Get Around the Triangle" "Walking Raleigh/Durham" by Rebecca C Mann is a "must buy as a Christmas present" for friends or family currently living in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill region. As a former Durham resident, I would have loved to have possessed the history, culture, geography and walking oppotunities supplied by Mann's little book. The maps are clear and well drawn and include specific distances and safety considerations. The local architecture and lore are fun and enlightening, and it all fits into a coat pocket with ease. While I intend to send copies to Durham and Chapel Hill friends who walk for exercise, I'm also sending my 65+ year old parents a copy. With descriptions of museums, parks, and historic sites one passes on different walks, it will give my parents something to do after they've watched poor Carolina lose yet another football game. If you need to give a UNC-CH, NC STate, Duke, or Peace College bound student a high school graduation present they'll really appreciate, this book would be it. Better yet, buy it for their parents, who are much more likely to use it during campus visits to their offspring than are the students themselves, since the latter spend most of their time searching for on campus parking spaces. On my next visit to the Triangle, I'm taking "Walking Raleigh/Durham" along. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Boderline Moronic I have never felt the need to write a review before, and I greatly appreciate those who do as they give me insight on the book at hand. This one is beyond stupid. Most of it was unbeliveable and some of it was absurd. I wish I could give it half a star for trying, but that isn't a choice. The characters were dull and the drama silly. Normally it takes me 2-3 days to breeze thru a book (and I have a toddler)but this one was almost painful to complete. And in fact I didn't even finish the last 3 pages because I couldn't have cared if they made it together or not. Summary: Enjoyable First time reading this author and I enjoyed this story enough to want to buy Some Like it Wicked and will buy Some Like it Brazen when it comes out. Clara is a beauty but it's her brains that makes her special. Finally a story where the man needs a beautiful woman for her brains and not her money. Clara is kidnaped by Hawksley but he ends up needing her for her logic and ability to think thing through in finding his brother's killer. I was a little disappointed in the ending with the way things were left with family and society. I hope their story continues in Some Like it Brazen. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Predictable but pleasant This book was predictable but most bodice rippers are predictable; after all, if the hero and heroine didn't fall in love it wouldn't be much of a love story. This is one of those little books that you can finish in one sitting. Even though Molly and Hart started out at loggerheads, they were both very likeable characters and I wanted to see what would cause them to resolve their differences. When Molly was kidnapped and Hart was injured trying to rescue her, I thought, "Yep. That'll do it!" I see that Ms. Raleigh has written a lot of books and I have added her to my list of authors whose books I will be searching for. It wasn't "War and Peace" but I greatly enjoyed this book! Summary: Greed will save my irresponsible brother! This is a cute little romp about a couple who are thrown together by the death of an aunt. The aunt's will stipulates that the nephew and companion must marry each other to inherit. The one who does not show up to the wedding inherits nothing. Normally, the sweet companion would have handed the money over, but she must save her brother from himself. He has become a smuggler underground to hide from the loans sharks that covered his gambling debts. As he is risking his life daily, the heroine decides to risk going up against the formidable lord in order to make him cry off so she can pay her brother's debts. The lord in question, however, is a worthy opponent, and hijinks and romance ensue... Fortunately, this story features likable characters, as the plot (and the heroine's and her brother's repentance for their greedy ways) seems a bit sketchy, improbable and formulaic. Enjoy!
