Summary: An easy read!
It is obvious that Madeleine Albright is a teacher because she knows how to communicate complex issues in an understandable manner.
Summary: I wish she had aimed higher!
Though I had seen Ms. Albright discussing her book on TV, I had not intended to read it until my wife brought it home from our library. Now that I have, I am pleased that I did read it and that she took the time (along with her co-author) to write it. First, Ms. Albright makes clear she is european-born, and raised a Catholic, though Jewish by heritage. We know that she has been our UN Ambassador, our Secretary of State and an experienced Professor at Georgetown University. Thus, I believe, there should be no doubt that she has the intellectual and experiential credentials to shed more light than heat on the current debate / crisis regarding Islam and the Middle East. Unfortunately, I felt, on finishing, that she did not aim sufficiently high, perhaps underestimating her audience, in her approach, and, as a result, touched too many subjects too lightly. Some examples: She devotes a chapter to Learning About Islam. Perhaps necessary, but I would suggest that most who read her book have already done some study, and those who have not, could have been better aimed at one of several available books, for example, The Life and Times of Muhamad by Sir John Glubb, a short history, by an Englishman who actually lived in Arabia for most of his adult life. Also, she leaves questions unexamined. For example, she quotes Abdel Rahman al-Rashad, general manager of the satellite new shannel Al Arabiya as saying: "It is a certain fact that not all Muslims are terrorists, but it is equally certain, and exceptionally painful, that almost all terrorists are Muslims......" Then later, in a footnote following a discussion for Christians, Jews and Muslims attempting to agree, she says "In September 2005, world leaders considered but failed to agree on a definition of terrorism that had been proposed by Kofi Annan. The main issue was whether actions taken to resisit occupation should be considered terrorism if they result in the death or injury of noncombatants." I would have appreciated a deeper analysis--if Muslim clergy can not agree that terrorism cannot include actions taken directly against civilian noncombatants, then what is the rest of the world to think / do?

While she does discuss Iran, it is for the most part an historical discussion of the Shah's period with almost nothing on the current Iranian government / situation. This seems at the minimum an oversight, and at worst, intentional. With chapters on Saudi Arabia and on Africa, I believe more time / analysis should have been given to Iran's role in Islam / terrorism / Middle East supremacy.

I found her suggested Seven Steps, in the eighteenth chapter, a good starting point for positive actions, for example, "Localize don't globalize", and "Don't play with matches". Again, more could have been done with these, creating a process, or a matrix of actions, countries, people and organizations, as points of departure for others to develop.

On the subject of religion, I found it less problematic that leaders would find it difficult to completely divorce their decisions from their beliefs (and I suspect that most of us believe that), but rather that the concept would be introduced by a member of a former Presidential Administration which showed little if any belief in an Almighty, but rather in expedience and indirection.

Finally, and I find this encouraging, I saw in the Amazon page, that more than 80% of those who bought this book, then went on to by Tom Friedman's "The World is Flat". I would suggest that those interested in continuing to learn read both Friedman's "The Lexus and The Olive Tree" and Walter Russel Mead's "Power, Terror, Peace, and War". The latter is a relatively short read, and will provide the reader with more powerful analyses than did Ms. Albright. On the positive side, I found that her regular, repeated emphasis that solutions will require a great deal of time encouraging, especially in light of the constant media barrage of questions why it is taking so long to 'end the war'; 'get Usama bin Laden', 'stop the terrorist homicides against civilians', etc.. We need more writers examining what needs to be done, and less crying for immediate solutions.
Summary: Madeline in the middle?
There is a temptation when dealing with unruley dogs, children, and nations, to think 'fair' means down-the-middle.

Madeline Albright's The Mighty and the Almighty, is not a down-the-middle book. She has a view of religion, world issues and America that has roots deep in her experience and political life. This is not the work of a focused political animal though. The Mighty and the Almighty is the mature, considered and informed thoughts of one of the world's most experienced statespersons.

If you are interested in the way the world is unfolding, why nations think and behave the way they do, and where the perils and the pearls of our future lie you are cheating yourself if you don't read this book. Democrats who don't read the book thinking they know what it will say, and Republicans who shun it thinking, 'same old, same old,' will wind up the poorer for it. There is much in this book both will agree with, and much that will make them think, and likely rethink.

I came to this book reluctantly --- not what I thought I'd want as summer reading, but I'd been encouraged by someone who I knew wasn't a Democrat, and whose opinion I respected. I thank them, and I thank Ms Albright. God has given Ms Albright many advantages and opportunities. He/She likely has high expectations of her. I suspect that with the publication of The Mighty and the Almighty, God is well satisfied with the dividend on the investment.

Summary: intense modelling in finance
As a Physics PhD who left physics, I read Derman's book with especial interest. He too faced this career choice after getting his doctorate and doing a stint in academia. The book shows the sometimes [often?] intense nature of academia, with emphasis on getting a tenured position. Whereas some industries can offer much higher salaries.

Though the book certainly makes clear that in finance, there really is no such thing as job security. But Derman describes a searingly intense environment, where mostly only results matter. And in finance, at least, there are some more or less objective metrics about accomplishment. That is, how much did your group make for the the company this year?

The modelling of financial instruments is not too dissimilar from modelling hypotheses you might make in physics research, if you peer at this the right way.

But the book also reveals that in a financial firm, the internal politicking can be as bad as anything in academia.
Summary: Brilliant
Students,
There are plenty of books to choose from that claim to introduce Quants, but this book does it correct. A story-mode text with references to Physics and Finance; what else do you need?
I think this is the best "Intro to Quant's" book out there, especially for Ivy League students with a more traditional Liberal Arts background..(Should have gone to MIT)
Summary: I generally don't like to read reviews.....
.....I should've read the reviews before I bought it:

Unless you are pursuing a physics orquant career or some derivative of themit, not enough to interest the mainstream financial community. As much as Derman talks about the mentality of traders or salesmen in his book, he did nothing to attract their readership with its content. Just as I think he's developing an interesting anecdotal moment that coincides with some notable market event, Derman succeeds in finishing his thought without a big finish.

His info on Fischer Black was of interest.

Summary: Excellent little book on Christian leadership.
Nouwen lays out a talk about Christian leadership based upon the three temptation of Jesus from Satan in the desert (Luke 4:3-13). He states that all Christian Leaders are tempted to be: 1) Relevant, 2) Popular or Spectacular, 3) Powerful and that all three of these can be dangerous.

From here he expounds with geniune heartfelt words of wisdom and observation that are guaranteed to challange you as a leader. I really enjoyed the book.

The only drawback is that little is added from the speach that it is derived from, and I felt a little 'cheated' by that. Not necessarily a fair critique, but there it is.

I have recommended it to many already and will continure to do so.
Summary: To be a Christian leader is to become a Mystic
To be a Mystic is one who constantly lives in Christ. Nouwen provides a spiritual answer to today's perchieved leadership qualities, which are more about control and competency, effectiveness and efficiency, morality, relevancy, and less about the core of Christian leadership, which is about the love of Incarnate Word.
Nouwen believed that when Jesus asked Peter the question "do you love me" three times, he dramatized the importance of the readiness, the willingness, and the abilities of in-dwelling with Jesus before he was given the responsibility "feed my sheep".
Nouwen challenged his fellow priests and the power-that-be in the Church to accept the radicalism that Jesus proclaims, to dare to be vulnerable, naked, powerless, to serve rather than to lead.
Summary: WE ARE ALL LEADERS
THIS BOOK WAS RECOMMENDED TO ME BY A FRIEND, WHOM HAD BEEN BROUGHT TO TEARS BY ITS MESSAGE.
AFTER READING IT REALIZED WHY.

THIS IS A POWERFUL BOOK THAT IS A MUST READ.

THE SUBTITLE IS "REFLECTIONS ON CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP". BUT DON'T BE FOOLED. IT IS RELEVANT TO EVERYONE.
AFTER ALL, WE ARE EACH LEADERS IN SOME RESPECT, TO SOMEONE, AND CERTAIN TIMES IN OUR LIFE.

HENRI HOUWEN WAS TRULY AN AMAZING AND INSPIRATIONAL MAN.

Summary: Poor Quality Binding
The book itself was a good read. BUT it fell apart on me the first time I picked it up to read it. I sent it back to Amazon and it was replaced promptly but the replacement book fell apart too. This is a book that I would like to use for future reference. I have it held together with a rubber band at the moment! :(
Summary: It works
I have been using this system for almost three years now and it has proven itself through two moves and going from working to being a SAHM. Use what you need, ignore the rest. Have an open mind and you'll see the tools she gives you apply to home, work, hobby, almost anything. It starts with loving yourself and realizing YOU deserve to live in a clean house, regardless of who else lives with you. It helps you establish good habits and gives a framework for living your life. And realize that if you get behind in your cluttered, disorganized life, it's ok - just jump in where you are. You can do anything for 15 minutes. It's true!

Marla is a sweet woman with a huge heart. She's not a drill sergeant, your life will not be scheduled from morning to night with cleaning tasks. Again, it's a framework for taking care of your home, but more importantly, loving yourself enough. If that sounds strange, you'll have to read the book to learn more. It took a couple of months for me to see how they related but once it clicked the entire system made complete sense. I am proud of the person I am and the house that I keep and all the good things that follow from that. I have time in my life for the people and hobbies that I love and I'm don't feel guilty about household chores (they're done) and I don't waste time on insignificant tasks/things.

Give the book a chance and it just may well be the tool you need.
Summary: Best with the Control Journal.
Very good book..mine's tattered now. I bought several copies at one time and gave them out as gifts. I do think this book is more helpful with the Control Journal she offers. She really helps those of us who aren't BO's (born organizers).

Summary: Only Love Is Real
Marianne Williamson is, arguably, the most visible expert on the Foundation for Inner Peace's "A Course in Miracles" -- a scripture-like text that, quite simply, aims to remove "the blocks to the awareness of love's presence, which is your natural inheritance." Williamson reduces & rearticulates the message(s) from the "Course" into a language that is more accessible, concise, & personable. I applaud her effort and appreciated the examples and anecdotes she provided, albeit a few seemed rather contrived. What Williamson manages to do quite well, however, is drive home the idea that love is everywhere -- love is God -- love is real -- and that living a life in the absence of love makes for an unhappy, unrewarding, & empty life. Williamson (and, by extension, the "Course") bandies around the words "Love", "God", "Atonement", "Forgiveness", and the like w/ no real obvious connection to their religious or secular definitions, so be prepared for a shifting of your vocabulary paradigm. This book is rich w/ insight, observation, and advice and, as such, you may need to re-read particular passages -- perhaps even the entire book -- if you wish to take away all that the book offers.
Summary: It's Hard sometimes
I haven;t had much of a chance to read lately - I lost the new job I had - they say I stole - but they git no proof - and thn was booted out of the home I was staying in -I didn;t expect them to have a curfew but I didn;t do a thing wrong - I am a long time abuser and user - i am finally owning up to that - and an abusee too - people always love to abuse me - even my own family - well, i got a newjob and thought I was on the right track - I had lived like a prisoner in my own home for years - I never had my car avalible - my husband Rick woudl hide the keys - most of the times I was using during the day and it woudl be dangerous for me to drive - but I walk ed to the mall this one day and found a book - not this one - that changed my life -But this book was good - it talked about love and how we hold it in our hearts - there was alot I didn;t understand - some of the sections were missing - i got it from a used free book shop - but what i did read and could understand - casue alot of it is mumbo jumbo - I think is helpful.. It has taken me a long time to beleve in the Spirit - my mother was screwed over by a priest after my father ran away - he wa a user too - mostly booze - but some sleeping pills too - but I think even though I have been through it - and now hav been fired i have the courage to change and rearrange my life - I need to find a man to share it with too
Summary: A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of "A Course in Miraclles"
I searched for this book all over to present it to my wife for Christmas and finally found it on your website. The price was around $10 and was affordable. I was disappointed when the parcel arrived and had a look at the quality of the product. It was a paperback which I did not mind, but the quality of the paper on which it was printed was as good as the newspapers.
I presume because of the price expensive paper could not have been used. I would have preferred a much better quality of paper in the book as it was a Christmas gift.

Summary: Relections...
Yes, it's one of the best book... with a lot of french cinematographers. Eric is right ;-)
Summary: A masterpiece about masters by masters
This is one expensive book, but what a joy!

Personal work flows of some of the very best cinematographers of our time, described by them in their own language. Lighting diagrams for many common shots and explanations of exactly what made them look so good. Footage examples galore, with many what-if comparisons.

Haskell Wexler on lighting interiors. Vilmos Zsigmond talking about what makes for great portraits, and why "key-to-fill lighting ratios are an important stepping-stone for students but [he rarely uses them in his shooting]. Laszlo Kovacs talking about the dangers of video assist, being specific about it and not judgmental. Allen Daviau on "why we hate multiple cameras: because we [light differently] for close-ups." And much more...

This book was put together with love by ASC Press and this also shows in the great color printing and gorgeous paper.

A true joy, IMHO.
Summary: Very interesting book
The ultimate book about cinematography in technical and artistical ways. Excellent and richly illustrated.
