Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: the horror, the horror, the horror This is perhaps one of the worst books I have read in the last few years. Gentle readers it is possible the stench from this tome could extend to this review. I like a good horror story and can suspend belief on many things while enjoying a good tale. With this Piece though, from page one it was implausible and predictable. The most maddening thing was that there was no hint of resolution of the of where these flesh eating plants came from and why they have not taken over all of Mexico by now. Likewise the ruins of the title are never explained and apparently never found and what kind of idiots would wander out into the jungle with little water and a several bottles of tequila. They are billed as recent college graduates but come off as refugees from "Girls Gone Wild". It sounds like the writer has never seen the inside of a jungle, if he would have at least read Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" or "The Darkest Jungle" by Todd Balf he might have been able to be a little more descriptive. I read two glowing reviews of this book in two days so I felt I could not go wrong, luckily I purchased it at a deep discount, but I say save your money and buy a hammer and use it to hit yourself in the head which will give you more pleasure than reading "The Ruins". Bill W. Summary: Ridiculous The opening chapters seemed promising. A group of young people head into the jungle for what they think will be a simple day trip to find a missing traveler. Knowing how the last "simple plan" worked out I settled in for what I thought would be a great read. The villain of the story is ridiculous. As more and more of the vine's evil capabilities are revealed the sillier they seemed to get. Since no one can communicate with the natives - including the author - the reader is never given any background of the vine, the ruins or the people. It's too bad the author felt the need to cross into the supernatural realm - it ruined a perfectly good story. Summary: creepy....but not a good book Years ago, I read "A Simple Plan" which is one of the best books I have ever read. I wondered what happened to Scott Smith and when I was told he had a new book coming out I couldn't wait to get it assuring myself he was going to write another great book.....I was very wrong. I understood that it would be a scary book, but after the first 30 to 40 pages I found myself completely apathetic to the characters and the plot of the book. A bunch of young adults head into the Mayan ruins to find someone's brother (they barely even know the person whose brother is lost which makes the plot even sillier...why wander into a jungle in the Mayan regions to look for someone you don't know!?) I won't spoil it for anyone, but the plot gets creepier, and I found myself disinterested. The evil "thing" was silly and I just couldn't believe that this was getting great reviews from Stephen King and other writers and critics. It's an awful book. It's not scary....it's just weird and when the book ends I didn't care about anyone in the book nor how they'd meet their fates. Skip this book. It's just not worth the time. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Absorbing! I love this book. Simply absorbing. Very easy to read. In addition, the examples from Steven's personal and business experiences appear to be sound. What captivates me the most is the practical application of spiritual wisdom to conventional ways of living. Steven has successfully applied such wisdom into his business endeavors. No wonder. he's reaping the fruits a thousandfold. Summary: A Path To Success The Richest Man isn't much different than other personal success books.Create a vision, make a plan, work the plan, and try to avoid pitfalls that commonly trip us up on our way to a better life.Using the Proverbs of King Solomon, The Richest Man Who Ever Lived offers a new guide to wealth and success based on wisdom. The Richest Man Who Ever Lived delivers a solid guide for getting on the path to success. Summary: Founder of Jet Blue Was RIGHT The founder of Jet Blue called this book "Truly Amazing", and that is an understatement. When he interviewed that author a couple of weeks ago, Larry King called this book a terrific read. He was also right--but for me this book is a terrific resource--one that I've used a dozen times for my marriage and my work since I bought it in May. I wasn't going to write a review until I read ks'review. He obviously hasn't even read the book, because Scott explain's Solomon's failure in the first chapter of this book. Solomon fell because he became arrogant and set aside the very wisdom he revealed in Proverbs. I HATE it when someone writes a "review" before they even read the book. If he had read the book he would have realized that doing so is one of the attributes of a FOOL according to Solomon. This book isn't about Solomon, it's about the incredible solutions to all of life's problems he gives in Proverbs. I just bought my tenth copy to give to a friend whose marriage is in trouble, and i KNOW they will find the answers in this wonderful book. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Fitzgerald's Finest Novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is the definitive novel from the Jazz Age. It has a dream-like quality and unfolds interestingly because the narrator, Nick Carraway, is a minor character rather than the protagonist. Nick is a Wall Street bond trader who befriends his neighbor Jay Gatsby, a wealthy man known for throwing lavish parties on his Long Island estate. Gatsby and his fortune are a mystery to even those who know him best, though Nick becomes his good friend. Through this friendship Gatsby is reunited with Daisy, a woman with whom he had a romance years earlier. Daisy is Nick's second cousin and married to his college classmate, a serial adulterer named Tom Buchanan. Daisy and Gatsby resume their love affair and eventually Tom becomes suspicious. After a confrontation in New York City, Daisy and Gatsby drive back to Long Island and accidentally kill a pedestrian named Myrtle Wilson. Myrtle is the woman with whom Tom is having an affair. Myrtle's husband kills Gatsby, thinking he was driving the car that killed Myrtle, then commits suicide. After Gatsby's funeral, Nick leaves New York. The novel is brilliantly written and readers will enjoy the plot nuances. Summary: * Loved It * This is one of my favorite books. The story takes place through the eyes of Nick basically an on looker. The era in which the book takes place is part of the attraction. It is the 20's and money is big. People are rich and notorious. Living in huge houses, throwing extravagent parties, and cheating spouces are common. Intertwined within all these themes is a tragic love affair. Written so elequently that the prose just flows off the pages. Summary: Timeless Tragedy F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, "The Great Gatsby", is narrated by the passive Nick Carrraway, who has recently settled into the West Egg section of Long Island, a decidedly less prestigious area than its East Egg counterpart. He has come to find his way in New York and to make his name known in the bond business. Nick's story, however, is not so much about himself as it is about his new neighbor, the mysterious Jay Gatsby, who lives in a gaudy mansion next door and hosts wild weekly parties to all of New York's upper crust. When Nick is brought into this fast-paced world, he must reexamine himself and the world he lives in. The novel is a classic examination of what it means to be a success the American Dream. As secrets unfold about the mythologized Gatsby, we discover that he has reinvented himself into the persona that he is, and that he is a man who is tormented by an idealistic vision of the woman he loves, and his desire to capture that woman for himself. Written in 1922, the novel is both a tragedy and a scathing indictment of the time of decadence that preceded the immediate economic upheaval and crash of 1929. Although it is situated very much in the context of the 20s and New York, it serves as a timeless story of a man's dream and the sometimes impossibility of those dreams. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Perfect for getting specific jobs done This book isn't a great general overview of Photoshops capabilities or a theoretical explantion to understand the underpinings of the program. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent Book for Intermediate Photoshop Users "The Photoshop Channels Book" continues Scott Kelby's well-established tradition of creating Photoshop instructional books that are concise, written in a lively and humorous style, and take the reader right to the heart of processes. This time he delves into the potential applications of Photoshop's "mysterious" channels panel, something that most people rarely use. While other books touch lightly on the subject Kelby devotes an entire volume to its functionality, and deservedly so. The book is very well designed in a 1950's/1960's TV-channel metaphor, richly illustrated and very easy to follow. Nearly anyone can get something new from it in ten minutes or less. It's a superb work that should have a long shelf-life as Photoshop continues to evolve. Summary: Great book In response the previous reviewer who hated it, yes I'm a beginner and thanks to Mr. Kelby I'm finally getting it. Who says that Photoshop's advanced techniques should be for the Selected few. The guy knows how to teach. Makes complicated concepts seem easy. The book is very organized and easy to read. On the downside: He is using a lot of filler addressing some topics that few of us will need. Summary: Info is great.... The information in the book is really great. My problem with the book is that the author goes WAY overboard on "cutesy". His cutesy style of writing often made it hard to focus on content. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great Surprise I kept thinking that this book was about business and wouldn't be applicabable to me, but boy was I wrong. This is an amazingly insightful book that helped me in every area of my life, business and personal. Take Susan Scott's advice and apply her suggestions to all areas of your life and you will be living at a much heightened level. As she states it, it helps you come out from behind yourself and become real. Summary: Disappointment I'm not sure who's writing these reviews, but I read repitition after repitition after repitition, with a lot of confusing fluff. Asking hard questions to solve complex or simple issues. What's "fierce" about that? The writing style and content just didn't flow. Wasn't real. I mean, in one section, she actually uses the term "bucko," as in, "Let me tell you something, bucko." What are we in "Happy Days?" Couldn't take the book seriously after that. Very bad. Summary: Making a Difficult Process Clear I've just come back to Fierce Conversations for about the tenth time. Scott has developed the clearest instructions on open, direct communication I've seen in 20+ years of working with clients around communication issues. She gives easy to understand guidelines and supports each with excellent examples. Anyone who has been around long enough to have read the early texts on Action Science will appreciate Scott's ability to put complex concepts into understandable action. This is a must-read for anyone wishing to practice communication at its best. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Mike Meyers is the only choice in computer knowledge With the ever changing computers, this book is valuable in learning what is expected as a computer technician. Summary: Decent, but doesn't cover everything I recently took the A+ and used this book to prepare for it. I reviewed the entire book before taking the exam and took all of the practice exams that came with the book, both the ones that were in the book and the ones on the CD included with it. I did pass my A+, but however, I must say that this book did not cover everything in enough detail. Many of the things on my exam were not covered in enough detail, especially upgrading and using the recovery console. The hardware preparation was a bit better, especially the printer section in my opinion. However, the author has a great writing style that keeps you interested in reading instead of boring you to sleep. Summary: Awesome, Doesn't have quite all you need. This is a great book for studying for the A+ exam. I passed the hardware with a score of 722 and the O/S with a score of 717, the first time around. This was the only book I READ for the exam, however the practice questions included(in the book and the CD) were not enough for me so I searched around the internet so I could cram even harder. This book will give you a good place begin your studies. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Ender's Game What an amazing story! I have read a lot of science fiction in my life, and this story is truly unique. So many people can relate with Ender. His story is sad, triumphant, thought-provoking, so many things. A MUST READ for science fiction fans. It made my hour-long commute fly by! Summary: Enders Game If you like Star Wars and space books then you will like Ender's Game. I am going into high school and I am 14 years old. There are a good amount of characters. Ender is a 6-year-old boy who is supposed to save the world. He is a genius. It is interesting because a 6-year-old tries to save the world when this doesn't normally happen. The book shifts scenes so it keeps you on your toes. The language is challenging so it should be for a high school or older kid. Someone reading this book will want to buy the next book because the last chapter leads into Speaker for the Dead. Summary: The true heir to Heinlein's smart, likeable heroes This book is a "Starship Troopers" for the Information Age, where enemies never come within a thousand kilometers of each other, but live or perish depending on how well they play computer games. Six-year-old Ender has his personal monitor removed after living with it for three years. Now isolated from his overseers, he's a target for the school bullies and his homicidal brother, Peter. Only after he overcomes these obstacles is Ender allowed to join the International Force's Battle School in space. This is the beginning of Ender's real struggle. Humanity was once almost wiped out by aliens called the buggers. Only the brilliance of a single general saved us. Now the International Force is trying to create a new general before the buggers show up again and complete their genocide. Ender is an extremely likeable genius--the exact opposite of the clichéd 'evil genius,' which I was getting pretty bored with anyway. He's a sort of six-year-old Byronic hero, earnest and determined to succeed in spite of his new enemies (geniuses themselves) at Battle School. His new mentors immediately and publicly single him out as someone special, and as a result Ender has to break one bully's arm on the shuttle up to school. Thanks a lot, Teach. This book's science is plausible, the background story is interesting, the mock battles are exciting and a great device for revealing Ender's growing tactical genius. His character is strengthened through his constant struggle with his envious and sometimes sadistic classmates. I wasn't too interested in the chapters concerning his psychopathic brother and loving sister, but I suppose they're important to the numerous sequels to "Ender's Game." This book's ending is a bit contrived, its climax impersonal and deflated, but other than that Orson Scott Card treats us to brilliant science fiction that is well deserving of its Hugo and Nebula. Ender is the true heir of Heinlein's smart, likeable, believable heroes. Summary: |
