Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The Civil War: A Narrative (3 Vol. Set) Author Shelby Foote was the best Civil War writer of our time. He had a vast knowledge of the Civil War and a way of writing that puts you there in the battle. I have enjoyed everything he has written. He will be missed by all that knew him or read his books. If you ever get a chance to see any of his TV interviews they are a must see. He loved the subject and you will see that in these volumes. A great reading experience. Summary: Shelby Foote's Civil War This is a brilliant work. Shelby Foote's recent death leaves a real gap in the knowledge base available on the Civil War. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: I hope many read this book In this period of travail and anquish over the great divide in America, between fundamentalism and secularism. One thing really stands out that is the interpretation of woman's rights, homosexuality and anti-semticism as mentioned in the Bible. If one believes that God was a Christian how could the fundamental approach to these words be what Jesus said or beieved in? The Bishop makes a very strong case for human rights. I plan to give this book for Christmas. Michael Butler Summary: Spong redux; fine book that restates earlier work too much As with Bishop Spong's previous efforts, "The Sins of Scripture" is a thoughtful, well-documented survey of the ways that the Bible has been used to justify some thoroughly immoral attitudes and behavior. Specifically, the authority of the Bible to underwrite selfish abuse of the environment, the repression of women, the condemnation of homosexuals as somehow subhuman, pious anti-Semitism, the violence meted out to children and to people treated as children, and the destructive divisiveness of creeds are exposed for what they are: an appeal to the authority of God to justify evil. Spong builds his case quite convincingly yet I was left a bit unsatisfied by the book as a whole. Anyone who has studied the history of Western civilization knows of the appalling "sins" of the Christian establishment. The Bible has been used as a weapon countless times in attempts to destroy freedom of conscience and belief, at the cost of human lives and the aggregate human progress in knowledge. For that matter, anyone who keeps reasonably informed of current events, particularly in the United States, has seen how a certain view of the Bible is used to damage people, to repress scientific inquiry, and to subvert the interests of democracy and freedom. This book serves quite well as an examination of how the message of the Bible has been corrupted, both in its writing and its application, to serve provincial bias and to support otherwise untenable positions. Thus, to refer to the subtitle of this book, the "Bible's Texts of Hate" have been exposed for what they are: the prejudices of people in a particular place and time, elevated through time and tradition to become, amazingly, the inerrant Word of God. In that effort, Bishop Spong has succeeded admirably. However, I must say that, in my opinion, the book is somewhat disappointing in revealing the "God of Love". Much of the depiction of the "God of Love" in this book is accomplished by describing what God is not. I was already well convinced of those propositions, even before having read earlier books by this author. Clearly, if God is seen as the creator, the designer, the ground of being in which humans exist, or any other such conception, the idea that somehow God is capable of hating and condemning any portion of humanity is absurd. Equally absurd is the notion that God wishes some part of humanity to hate, abuse or oppress any other part. God is, by definition, the *Higher* Power, and doesn't indulge in the base emotions which would be attributed to God by those ideas. Rather, God calls humanity to "come as [they] are in order to become all [they] can be", to use an apt phrasing from the book (p. 274). Spong, unfortunately, does too little to describe the "God of Love" affirmatively. It is primarily in the final two sections of the book that this is attempted, and not particularly coherently. As with the book "Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism", he has succeeded in exposing the nonsense but stating little of the sense found in the Bible. In chapter 20 of the present book, he asks whether there is any role for Jesus in the new view of reality he has explained, which sees humanity not as "fallen" from some state of grace in the misty past, but rather as an incomplete creation which is growing toward a perhaps impossible perfection. His answer is an endnote which states that he will address the question more completely in his next book, tentatively titled "Jesus for the Nonreligious". I find myself wishing that he had written that book now, since "Sins of Scripture" covers much of the same ground his earlier books had already examined. This book does lay out his thesis somewhat more completely, but it leaves me questioning, as I was when I first opened the book, what can be salvaged from the Bible to further a healthy, humane spiritual growth. Perhaps that is the point; after all, affirmative statements of belief have the disturbing propensity to become creeds, which by their very nature are exclusionary and divisive. To summarize, this is overall a fine work. Those already familiar with Spong's writings will find it a bit repetitive of previous books; those who are not will find it challenging and illuminating. Being of the former description myself, I wavered a bit over rating the book '5 stars'. After reading other reviews here, many of which gave very low ratings based apparently on either the publisher's blurb rather than actually reading the book and/or the reviewer's own contempt toward anyone who questions dogma, I felt compelled to give an additional star over my initial four simply to help push the average toward a realistic rating. Summary: Not For True Christians I'm sorry I purchased this book and wasted my money as well as the limited amount of time I spent reading it...no, I didn't finish it, I didn't have to. The author starts out saying that the last thing he wanted to do was write a book that would essentially come across as a Bible-bashing book then proceeds to betray his own promise. From the first few pages it becomes obvious that the author has a bone to pick with Christianity in general and the Church and the Bible in particular. Though he professes to be a life long scholarly student of the Bible his words leap off the page full of anger and contempt for the Bible itself as well as those who "foolishly" believe in its contents. It became immediately apparent that the author's intent was to offend and outrage because he himself is offended and outraged. Coming from one of the minorities who has personally suffered from misuse of Scripture I did not take the author's stance of blaming the source for those who abused it. And while the author is certainly entitled to his personal beliefs and opinons as an author claiming to approach the subject matter from a learned stance instead I felt tricked into buying a book that is nothing more than a personal soapbox. Vehement, angry, and full of personal resentment gives the real overview and flavor of the author's approach to the subject matter. If you're looking for an angry outpouring against the Bible and Christians you'll be satisfied, if you're seriously looking for an intelligent treatment of the texts in question you'll be sadly disappointed. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: A very funny book. Within the pages of Uncle Shelby's ABZ book lies the superb and imaginative work Silverstein puts into his better known "children's" poetry books combined with a deeply warped sense of humor. The result is a work that's marvelously funny, albeit just a tad disturbing. With tongue firmly in cheek, Uncle Shelby innocently suggests to children who might be reading, among other things, to throw eggs at the ceiling, bury their little sister in a deep hole, take a ride in a kidnapper's fast car (after telling him your daddy has lots of money) or smashing the TV with a hammer to set free the elves that live within. ("What will you name them?" asks Uncle Shelby). Short, yet entertaining from cover to cover, Uncle Shelby's ABZ book belongs on the coffee table of anyone wanting easy access to bent humor thinly disguised as naivety. A worthwhile text to own, for sure. Summary: ABZ Book We bought this book for our married daughter for her birthday and she loves it. We highly recommend it! Summary: this is a RIOT! Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: A reminder of "The Red Badge of Courage" style... Shelby Foote is famous (rightly enough) for his trilogy on the ACW... but as a curiousity (and well before "The Killer Angels" Pullitzer Prize...)he wrote a short novel using the same pattern or schema of different characters TELLING THE ACTION FROM HIS POINT OF VIEW , the main difference is they do not relate a lot or are interwoven... still the prose is superb and the battle scenes as a whole are VERY GOOD!... Not five stars because there are far superior novels but a must have if an ACW fan... ADB Summary: Historical Fiction At It's Best Who better than Shelby Foote to write a Civil War based novel? He does what he does best here, presenting history not from the viewpoint of historians but from the soldier in the field. Foote strips away the glory that military writing often wraps itself in, the noble causes and fighting the good fight. He shows the randomness of who survives and who doesn't, the fear that some men overcome and others are overcome by. A very good read, intersting, exciting and informative. Summary: You Are There In this beautifully written book, Shelby Foote takes the reader straight to the battlefield of Shiloh. By telling the story from the points of view of the participants, both North and South, there is a real sense of being present. The guns fire and the smoke and rain penetrate the entire area. We are wet and cold and scared and puzzled by the battle and how it moves. Any student of the Civil War should enjoy this story emensely. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Combination biography and investment ideas I personally don't care for dry investment books. I read for entertainment. This book provides a great combination as it is a biography of a family steeped in money management and also gives tips of how they were able to grow their fortune. The book traces the investment history of Shelby Davis to his son to his grandsons. Shelby had family money through his wife and starts investing shortly after the crash in '29. Like many people, I assumed the market has been a somewhat continual climb with some setbacks. This books traces the history showing the many periods of lackluster stock value growth and how most Americans shunned the stock market for bonds. Quite a difference from today. The original Shelby was a miserly value investor who never spent an extra dime. His investment hits were insurance stocks when no one liked that industry and some prudent investments in Japan, also mainly in the insurance industry. By leaving these investments to compound for years, Shelby built a great fortune. But the hidden engine behind this vast growth was the use of margin to leverage his returns. The original Shelby eventually grew his fortune to over a billion dollars in value. Shelby's son Shelby did not work with his father until late in his life but eventually became a money manager of some renown also. His philosophy was similar but different and his large money winners tended to be from other industries. The book ends with the sons of Shelby Jr. taking over their father's money management firm and establishing their own identity. Along this 70 year history, you will learn about the markets and the different stages of development over the years. A significant amount of time is spent in the 60s and 70s as both of the Shelby's were investing at that time. I strongly recommend this book if you have interest in the market and its history. Summary: Highly Recommended! John Rothchild has written a fascinating biography of one of Wall Street's most successful and least-known investors, Shelby Davis, who turned a $50,000 initial investment in 1947 into $900 million, almost exclusively by buying and selling insurance stocks. Part character study, part Wall Street history, Rothchild's book reads like a novel, with an accessible and witty narrative. Of special note is the concise summary of Davis' investment strategy, which rivals Buffettology in its simplicity and common sense. In Rothchild's hands, Davis' life becomes a fun read, no matter what your business interests, and we from (..)recommend this book to all curious readers. Summary: More Than a Dynasty While this is not a "how to" book it certainly is "why to" book. It's a look at remarkable family that gives anyone who has never invested in the stock market a perfectly good reason why they should! Patience and long term results are a philosophy that has worked well for them over the years. It's a look at a concept and philosophy handed down by the patriarch of the family that wealth should not be handed down, but earned. Spanning 4 generations, Rothchild gives the reader a remarkable insight into a family that works hard and plays hard. Even with this success the family has given back through many philanthropic endeavers including millions to the United World College. The college, with 10 campus' world-wide endeavers to bring students of different cultures and backgrounds together to foster understanding of each other in a world that desperately needs it. Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Professing to be wise, he became a fool Bishop Spong, I have this much to say. Either you don't know of all the information that is out there, or you have chosen to ignore it. A case in point is the Institute for Creation Research. To state that the planet is billions of years old without proof is like making something up out of thin air. ICR has plenty of information that makes the world only six thousand years old, not millions or billions. Their exhaustive research has been consistent and proves this. In fact, it has actually backed up Genesis 1, where God created the earth and all the flora and fauna in six literal days. This information at hand not only strengthens the faith, but eliminates the need to change it "or else it will die". To switch BC/AD to BCE/CE is an old gnostic heresy redressed for the "enlightened modern mind." There is no need to do this. He does this to separate himself from orthodox theology. Furthermore, Spong is self-aggrandizing and your typical self-serving leftist. He thinks Christianity should be reinterpreted through his vision (and those of his associates). His "faith" is definitely not in line with the canon of Scripture when everything is taken into context. This is a book that I could not finish -- nor do I intend to. Summary: A voice crying in the wilderness I've always liked Bishop Spong, mostly because his faith journey has been similar to mine. Not only that but we are trying to breathe new life into Christian doctrines that, in today's world, are becoming increasing unbelievable. After the discoveries of modern physics and biology, as well as the horrors of the last century, the God of orthodox Christian theism--while continuing to be compelling for many--is still a hard sell for others. And it's this later group that Spong is writing for. He calls them "believers in exile." They have left the church or are silently sitting in the pews biting their tounges because they can't say the creed with conviction: the modern world has made it unintelligible. Yet these same people are still wanting to stand within the Christian tradition, if only it could make sense and be relevant to their lives. The old God, along with its doctrines, have no power over their lives, probably because of the infinite distance between the first century understanding of the world and a twenty-first understanding of it. Like many theologians who no longer stand in the "orthodox" camp, Spong undertakes the task of re-defining Christian doctrines in the light of contemporary knowledge. God, Jesus, resurrection, the Christian life--all are given a new meaning. Yes, it may not look like the Christianity of old, but Spong is wrestling with the texts and traditions that have been handed down to him and, along with contemporary scientific knowledge, is trying to make Christianity believable for contemporary men and women who hunger for transcendence but who don't find it in the traditional paradigm. Lee Tasey Author of "The Gospel of Arnie" Summary: Is the writer a real believer ? To say Christianity will die is to say that one can see the end of the world. Purely craziness. Christianity will live as long as the world exists. What is died is the faith for many Christians, what has been changed is our faith (by money, pride, and selfishness) and consequently, our church and our societies. What dominants many US and European Christian churches is a worldly Christianity, a Christianity affected by the materialism, and world-view. The exact thing that Jesus repeatedly condamned. I feel extremely sad when I can see pasters and evangelists earn 6-figure salaries, live in luxury houses, air-travel in business class, or socialize with social elite. I feel extremely sad when I see young theology students without born-again experience and spiritual life become pasters and preasts. Jesus have given us great mission: to preach gospel to every corner in the world. But money, pride, and selfishness have consumed the hearts and sole of many Christians and today they love the world more than they love Jesus. Are they still Christians? Of course not. To say Christianity needs change is purely nonesense. Only person see himself greater than Jesus would say something like that. What needs to be changed is ourselves, not Christianity. Because we have embaked a wrong way, following the world and not following Jesus. Summary: |
