Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The best biology book ever I absolutely love this book. The explanations are thorough and understandable and the pictures and diagrams cannot be beat. Truly a great read. The book goes into enough detail, but not too much that you get confused. Thank you Purdue bio department for choosing this book!! Highly recommended! Summary: Excellent book for College Biology I utilized this book for my college biology classes. It was very complete and had great details on photosynthesis, Krebs cycle, glycolysis. I even liked the chapters on animal structure and function, quite interesting. However, the chapter on genetics was the hardest to read. I had to re-read pages over again to understand what Raven was trying to teach. If you want to know what is the best study guides for college biology to study from, get the following by Patrick Leonardi-- The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (Vol 1) Topics: Organziation of Living Things and Chemistry of Life, Structure and Function of the Cell and Energy Pathways, Reproduction and Heredity, Genetics. The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (Vol 2) Topics: Evolution, Ecology, Kingdom Bacteria, Kingdom Protista, Kingdom Fungi, Viruses, Plant Form and Function The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (Vol 3) Topics: Kingdom Animalia, Organization of the Animal Body, Animal Form and Function, Animal Reproduction, Development and Behavior. The last three study guides prepared me for the kind of questions that were asked on my college exams. This helped me cut a lot of time in my studying because now I new what to focus on. Raven's book is a also a must buy. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A fascinating souvenir book from the superhero motion picture of the year This book is much more than just a compilation of photos and sketches from Bryan Singer's SUPERMAN RETURNS, which in my opinion is the superhero motion picture of the year. The book is divided into five (05) different chapters (Superman; Smallville; Metropolis; Krypton; and Lex Luthor), all beautifully illustrated and explained by author Daniel Wallace. I bought it together with the movie score by John Ottmann, which turned out to be an interesting combination to be enjoyed at the same time. All of the magic from this movie in portrayed in the book, there's nothing missing at all. This is certainly a must-have for any superman fan such as myself. Five stars ! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent Purchase I bought this book for my wife for her birthday and she loves it! It seems to be a great way to learn a lot of worship songs yet it not be too difficult. I highly recommend for anyone wanting to glorify Jesus through song - and it is especially a blessing to come together with my family in our home and sing to one another in Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Highly recommend! Summary: Good selection of new and old This fake book is packed with contemporary worship songs. I am continually surprised at the songs that I'm familiar with that are contained in this book. It's a fake book so it has the melody line and the chords. I play piano for a contemporary church service and this book has just about every song in it that the pastor wants to sing. It's not quite as new as I would like; I think the newest songs I've seen in it were copywritten in 2002. However a good song doesn't lose it's meaning, and there are a lot of good songs (current and memorable) selected from the past 25 or so years. This book is a great starter book for a church musician's song library. It may even be all you need. Summary: Best worship music, easy to learn This book contains hundreds of worship songs, although not to many "new" songs. New Worship songs are being written constantly and hopefully will be put into new volumes to follow. This book only contains the melody line, lyrics and chords.Very good binding, easy to turn pages, well written. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: Consider The Source Ironic that Pete Hamill should write this book. To my ears and eyes, Pete Hamill has never written a sincere or honest word in his life. The irony is that when Sinatra was asked how he wanted to be remembered, he said he would want people to think of him as an honest singer. The book is good, but read it with a grain of salt due to the author. Summary: The man and his music I like this book because it isn't like all the other Sinatra biographies out there. In fact, it isn't really appropriate to call "Why Sinatra Matters" a biography at all. Author Pete Hamill was an acquaintance of Sinatra's and much of the book is built around conversations that the two men had together, which is very interesting. This book gives a general overview of Sinatra's upbringing and rise to stardom. Hamill explains how Sinatra's childhood and Italian American background contributed to the development of his music. Sinatra's "fall from grace" is also examined, but Hamill is quick to point out that the only thing that really matters is that Sinatra was able to overcome his obstacles and make an incredible comeback. There has never been another singer like Frank Sinatra and there never will be again. Sinatra continues to represent so many things to so many people, which is why his music will live on forever. Summary: Some Outstanding Ideas, But Just a Touch too Much Gossip! Many of the basic, well known aspects of FS's life are mentioned here, starting with the Genoan and Sicilian branches of his family history, his quiet father and brash, Democratic Ward Leader mother. The segment on Bing Crosby's huge influence on 1930's popular culture, especially in the new radio-centered family (like TV today) is great, and perhaps not known too much today. FS as an icon for immigrant Italians, along with LaGuardia and DiMaggio, is also a high point. The days with James and Dorsey are also well done, if rehashes, like much of this otherwise excellent book. And much is written about FS's legendary "Fall" and 2nd Rise, the Fall being among the most overdone of FS's incredible life.(Many would love to fall from such Olympian heights!). Mr. Hamill says that the music is what matters. Obviously, he's right! Only Frank could sing so well about the depths of anguish and despair, as well as the thrill of triumph! The author also gives a nice summation of the great work of FS with Nelson Riddle. Unfortunately, short shrift is given to Billy May, and a short paragraph mocks the "sugary" work of Gordon Jenkins. Oddly, the most famous pairing of Jenkins and FS, "September of My Years" is listed in the appendix as among Mr. Hamill's favorite albums! It would have been nice if a CD was included, since this book does not really mine the golden depths of FS's best recordings. Still, all in all, a fine and succinct presentation of The Man and His Music. Summary: |
| Bob Dylan: The Essential Interviews
Publisher: Wenner Books |
|
| ISBN: 1932958096 List Price: $23.95 Amazon Price: $15.57 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Never dull. Bob Dylan may be one of the most loquacious enigmas of all time. As lovingly presented here by Jonathon Cott, Dylan goes on and on and on to all sorts of interviewers, sometime comedian, sometime huckster, sometime philosoher, sometime preacher, but always fascinating. Summary: Dylan remains the enigma, even after this book Let me just say that I am a big Dylan fan, and intruiged by his personality. I loved Dylan's "Chronicles Volume 1" autobiography, even if it did brought about more questions than answers. But then, isn't that the Dylan way? "Bob Dylan: The Essential Interviews" (447 pages) compiles 2 radio interview transcripts (from 1962 and 1963) and 29 interviews (from 1964 to 2004) and the book is a delight to read. Yes, some of the interviews become repetitive, but the overlying themes are two-fold: (1) Dylan never wanted the mantle of "consciousness of an era" thrown on him, and he has worked non-stop to throw off the public at large ever since the late 60s because of it, and (2) despite all he says and does, nobody really, truly can know or understand the man. He plays with the press as he sees fit. Hence, Dylan remains the enigma. But us Dylan fans have a lot to look forward to: in a few months Dylan will release his first album of new music since 2001's outstanding "Love and Theft", and then of course there is the prospect of the next volume of "Chronicles" (no release date said yet). Meanwhile, Dylan hosts a monthly show on XM sattelite radio, which I've caught a few times, and that also is a delight. Summary: uneven but well worth the read This is a must read for serious Dylan fans, even though the interviews reproduced here are uneven. The better ones, from the early and later stages of Dylan's long career, are revealing and philosophical. Many mundane pieces from the long middle period are a bit tendentious -- even tedious at times. Dylan is enigmatic, contradictory, but often quite poetic in explaining his ambivalence about fame and icon status. All in all, well worth the purchase price. Summary: |
| The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter
Publisher: Rodale Books |

| ISBN: 157954889X List Price: $25.95 Amazon Price: $16.35 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: A Book That Leaves Morals to the Market The way we eat is more than a matter of physical nourishment; it also involves nourishing our community life. Thinking about what we eat is profoundly important, but The Way We Eat: Why Food Choices Matter falls short of the mark. The authors discuss animal husbandry, international trade, genetic manipulation and crop production all as sets of choices, some better than others, from the perspective of a US consumer. Chapter 17, "The Ethics of Eating Meat," addresses the question of how many domesticated animals can be "humanely" raised on land appropriated for agriculture, versus how many free-living animals could be supported if that land offers natural habitat. Natural habitat supports animals with an autonomy that simply cannot be compared with the quality of life of farm animals. This omission glares through the authors' repetitive suggestion that hens, pigs and dairy cows be allotted more space. The claims of free-living animals are not accounted for by Singer and Mason; and animal agribusiness certainly doesn't meet its match in this book. Indeed, decision-makers within global agribusiness are implicitly deemed experts, capable of supplying morally acceptable options to society. For the authors' endorsement of corporate authority is interwoven throughout The Way We Eat, and they bless even the quintessence of corporate dominance -- McDonald's. This the authors do by telling us that locally owned burger joints might not meet McDonald's standards of animal husbandry and slaughter. Nowhere does the book recommend supporting the local vegetarian restaurant. The authors do cover a Philadelphia restaurant whose owner "can't go vegetarian because that could put me out of business," but vaunts the venture as "capitalism for the common good." Fair trade is clearly not a big issue for Singer and Mason. The authors promote an export paradigm rather than local empowerment, and they accept genetic modification without noting the results of serious critiques that have been done on the specific examples they approve. Given the major ethical, logical, and environmental shortcomings in The Way We Eat, those aspiring to understand the global food supply through the lens of justice and fairness are likely to seek other references. Summary: Out of Whack I read reviews saying despite his vegan bent, Singer was balanced in this book. While I am no fan of factory farming, I don't share Singer's extreme animal rights sympathies, so many of his arguments fall flat if you don't believe animals should be living at Club Med sipping cocktails by the beach (or whatever he thinks is a suitable life experience for farm animals). Any respect for his ideas was blown early when he criticizes the admittedly awful conditions of huge chicken farms by observing chickens are so packed together they peck at each other and are so hungry at times they constantly peck at the ground. Having a dozen chickens myself, free ranging in the bucolic hills of Vermont, I can tell you this is normal chicken behavior. Silly, urban consumer statements like this reflect the authors' unmitigated desire to criticize virtually every food production method (and leaving the reader with almost nothing that is okay to eat). Most people live in the real world, where we can't, or don't want to, spend all our waking hours figuring out how to eat an ethically pure diet (by these authors' ethics). Rather than feeling guilty about the compromises I must make in my diet, this book simply made me feel I wasted my money and time on this book--my money and time would have been better spent buying the eggs from New Zealand grown by socially conscious, non-violent, naked, vegetarian, anti-nuclear nymphs. Summary: What's for Dinner? I daresay this book will change something about the way all of us - from fast-food addicts to committed vegans - choose our food. In tracing the pathways via which three family's meals reached the table, Singer and Mason inform, reason, problematize, and sometimes shock. But they do not preach. Increasing awareness and concerns about what we eat and where our foods come from are changing global and local and global norms. "The Way We Eat" is an indespensable resource for those seeking to act as global citizens rather than simply global consumers. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The Clearest and Most Useful Book on HLM for Longitudinal Studies This is simply the best book for those analyzing longitudinal data (data measured at more than one time point). Singer's coverage of Hierarchical Linear MOdeling (HLM) is clear, well-written (sprinkled with humor, it's like a lecture by the most popular prof. at your school), and geared towards researchers who need their programs to run, not just learn the mathematical underpinnings. Singer and Willett (the coauthor, not listed above!) set the standard for presenting math/statistics book examples. THe authors accomplish the latter by keying her examples to data located at a UCLA website; you can run the same programs on the same datasets used in the book (wow!), and compare your output, troubleshooting any problems you may have. Singer and Willett (her coauthor, not listed here!) provide outputs and programs correspoing to several of the most popular statistical programs, including SAS and SPSS. SInger and Willet also explain the rationale for using HLM over more traditional techniques such as regression. Simply stated, regression aggregates at a level that cause one to lose information (and hence the power to detect differences.) HLM allows one to look at overall differences due to time, but also the trajectories of individual differences who are "nested" within those time points. It's the (relatively) new thing, and is increasing used by investigators, and desired by peer reviewers. As supplements, I suggest using the UCLA website mentioned above, subscribing to an e-mail LISTSERV for interesting (though sometimes compicated discussions of "multilevel modeling" (MULTILEVEL@JISCMAIL.AC.UK), and searching for Judith Singer's website through Google or A9 (if you use A9--"Alexa"--enough you'll get a small discount at Amazon.com). Also, compare Amazon's and Judith Singer's (through her website) current prices on this book. Summary: Breaking down complex analyses This is an excellent book. Multilevel modeling and survival analysis are becoming increasingly important in psychological studies, but are pretty complicated procedures. Singer & Willet offer both a conceptual background and practical ways to do the analyses in a clear, understandable manner. The book is very readable and will be an important reference for future analyses! Summary: very clear and thorough This book does a particularly good job of explaining the substantive meaning of the equations involved in multilevel modeling analyses. It spends a lot of extra time explaining what the equations mean in real world terms using examples from actual data sets. I teach a graduate level course on HLM and I much prefer this book to the Raudenbush & Byrk book because it not only does a better job of explaining the math (for graduate students less comfortable with statistics) but the chapters are also sprinkled with incredibly useful advice on actually running the analyses (getting them to converge, interpreting them, etc.) The Raudenbush & Bryk book probably does a slightly better job of presenting the equations, but it falls short on explanation and practical advice. If you were only going to buy one HLM book, I would start with this one. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Wonderful tool for faithful living I bought this for my daughter and use it even more than she does. This is a wonderful Catholic interpretation of the Bible and does a great job of explaining Catholic beliefs and traditions in relation to Scripture. It has all 73 books, so it's a complete Catholic Bible. Some of the special features I like most include "Live It!" giving the reader practical applications drawn from real life and "Pray It!" encouraging the use of the Bible for personal prayer. Lots of study aids help place the teachings in context. The Catholic religion hasn't changed in over 2,000 years, yet this bible makes it accessible to today's believers. I recommend it for anyone interested in a little extra help when exploring Scripture. Summary: |
