Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Nothing better...period Despite the fact many have tried to "pretend" there are other dictionarys/encyclopedias that are better than The Groves, there simply are not. Sure, The Groves is not cheap, however, if you are looking for a quality work, it will never be cheap. So, whether you are a person with degrees in Music History, or someone who just wants to have information readily available on music/musicians, this is the only way to go. Summary: Don't believe that you are getting 20 books. Although the announcement makes you think that maybe yo will be getting 20 books for a song, you will be singing a different tune when it arrives. You will get one (yes, 1) volume selected apparently at random. I got volume 13. Summary: dumbed down Four stars for what has been carried over from the 1980 version, zero stars for what has been appended to it. We can't entirely blame the dictionary for the poor quality of most of these additions. The dictionary depends on a large pool of contributors, most of whom hold academic positions, and our academies are beset with insufficiently acknowledged problems. One problem is the graduate-school analogue of what in secondary schools has been called "grade inflation". We might call it "degree inflation". Unqualified candidates are routinely pushed through graduate school; mediocre minds are awarded doctorates and assume faculty positions. This is partly the result of a misguided egalitarianism and partly the result of a quid-pro-quo cronyism. In any case, it is self-perpetuating and self-proliferating. It manifests itself here most obviously in rambling pseudo-intellectual essays on such empty buzzwords as "postmodernism". Another problem is commercialization. It manifests itself here most obviously in vacuous and clumsily written (and randomly strewn with rock journalism cliches) extended accounts of various pop music figures, such as, for example, Bob Dylan and David Bowie. (Both Bob Dylan and David Bowie have composed interesting song lyrics and are worthy subjects for popular culture historians, but neither have any particular MUSICAL significance.) Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Finally, a book on economics that even I can understand! This is the book I have been looking for! I sure wish I'd found this book let's say five years ago or maybe $5,000 ago (lol)! Now I'm a big dummie, especially when it comes to economics, but I plan to make millions in the near future by gaining some kind of angle or secret. Mr CR McConnell breaks down all those confusing economic things that have stood between and my dreams of understanding just how money works for years. I recomend this book for anyone that wants to help themselves out economically and plans to help other people out with their money too. Look for me on the cover of Fortune Magazine! Summary: The Best Macroeconomics Text Available As far as I'm concerned, McConnell's "Economics" is the most thorough and well-structured macroeconomics text available. The examples are smart and clear, and the information fresh and updated, unlike other texts in this area of study. My vote: 5 stars. Dr. Henry Toof Cambridge, MA Summary: Close but no cigar. McConnell and Brue do a B+ job in this book. However,it does not equal Samuelson's introductory textbook in economics in explanatory power in a number of areas. In this review I will concentrate on just one point of comparison concerning the paradox of thrift.McConnell and Brue effectively discuss this paradox at the macro economic level using the short run aggregate supply curve's three ranges-the horizontal Keynesian range, the upward sloping synthesis range and the Classical-Neoclassical vertical range. If the economy is operating in the Keynesian range or the lower part of the synthesis range, then McConnell and Brue correctly show that more current savings will lead to less future savings due to a decrease in investment and a reverse multiplier effect reducing spending. On the other hand, they correctly show that if the economy is operating in the vertical range, more savings will reduce inflationary pressures while making it possible for investment to increase IF(and only if)businessmen have correct expectations about the future.Samuelson also goes through this analysis. However, Samuelson goes one step further. Samuelson first discusses the linkage at the microeconomic level between the paradox of thrift and its microfoundations in the Production Possibilities Curve(PPF).Essentially, if the economy is operating inside the frontier(on the horizontal Keynesian range or upward sloping portion of the synthesis range),then more savings is detrimental and moves the economy deeper into the interior of the PPF.On the other hand,if the ecomomy is operating on the boundary of the PPF,then more savings can potentially be transformed into more investment, assuming that businessmen, operating in the private sector, have correct expectations about the future.Samuelson demonstrates that in the interior the micro optimality conditions break down and are not operational.McConnell and Brue do not cover this in their textbook. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great book for anyone interested in maining internal health This book is very easy to read and is full of facts. The diet Master Cleanse is more than just a diet; it really frees your mind as well. I have surgeries on a regular basis due to a severe accident I had years back. I use this everytime to give my system a break and to let my body use its energy to heal itself. I also used to have digestive/elimination problems...thanks to the master cleanse and annual colonic treatments I feel great. When toxins are removed from your body you feel totally different...light, energetic, etc. I actually TRY to do this cleansing at least once a month. This does WAY more than just help you to loose weight. It teaches disipline as well and you alos realize how much time we focus on FOOD; what to eat, what to cook, when is the next meal, etc. In a way it gives you FREE TIME! :-) Summary: The best one ever For years I have been working out and watching what I eat. Nothing seem to help me to loose weight. I started having problems with my joints, ulcers, headaches, fatigue and other health problems. The 'Master Cleanser' book changed my life. I only did it for 15 days and I lost 20 pounds. I've never felt as good as I do now. I am 41 years old but I feel as if I was on my 20's. My joint and other health problems are gone. I have the energy I haven't had in a long time. This is a must to do cleansing. Specially if you are experiencing helth problems. I keep getting complement after complement from people that know what I looked like before. Thank you Dr. Stanley Burroughs. I read recently, in an interview, that the author attributes inspiration for the book to being in excellent health. Said having quit all forms of caffeine help free the mind for more creativity. I say amen to that as I too am free with a little help from a book called "The Truth About Caffeine: How Companies That Promote it Deceive Us and What We Can Do About It" by Marina Kushner. Caffeine affects the body in basically the same way regardless of the size or age of the consumer, but the effect is much more pronounced in children than it is in adults. Drinking one caffeinated beverage for a child is like an adult drinking four, Kushner says. Even small amounts of caffeine can make children jumpy, nervous and excitable and cause them to have difficulty focusing. Its has an excellent resource section that helped me find great tasting alternatives that I simply adore. I would order this book now! Summary: Pleased with my purchase I haven't tried the cleanse yet, but am anxious to start it. The book gives alot of information about why the cleanse works and why it should be a part of everyone's regimen to cleanse the toxins and waste from the body. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent Self Study The text is very easy to read and simple to follow along. The self study guide that comes with it is very handy to get a full understanding of the mathematical equations. I was disappointed that the weblink provided in the book to get more up to date information from Standard & Poor's was not working. I had to order the 11th edition for my second finance class but that was by order of the university. When the 11th edition arrived the weblink in that book worked. I really enjoy reading the book on my commute to and from work. I recommend this book to even the curious person who wants a better understanding of retirement and pension plans. I will always refer back to the two texts for all my finance needs. Summary: Foundations of Financial Management, 10th Edition Delivery was terrific. I received the book 6 days after I ordered it and it's brand new! Summary: Excellent Finance Starter This book is very easy to follow and serves as a good reference for more advanced finance classes. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Very good for first exposure to financial markets This book is not an advanced book on financial markets, but it is a good introductory book. I use this book for my undergraduate teaching. Both I and students are happy about the coverage of the book. It is well organized and well written. Improvements will be valuable in the derivatives markets and risk management areas. Summary: Good start I've used some version of this book for many years now, and I've seen it evolve. I think, as other reviewers have said, that there are some simplified portions of the book, especially those parts dealing with monetary economics. There are other portions which lay out the principles as only these authors can, and those parts are extremely helpful and valuable. This book allows me to teach my notes and thoughts with a textbook serving as a reference and an introduction -- it doesn't get in my way, in other words. I use it along with several other texts, and I think it gets the job done. Students seem to like it as well, mainly for its clarity. For someone wanting to learn the basics, this is an excellent choice. Summary: This book insults the intelligence of all but newcomers Although this might be a perfect book for those looking for simplicity, I would not advise it to anybody with previous exposure to finance. The book is a way too simple, and reveals huge ignorance on the markets outside the US. I think the book is very much a benchmark to reveal ignorant finance - teachers. Summary: |
| The Stanley Kubrick Archives

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: amzing this is the perfect way to get to know perfectly Kubrick's ideas of his films. With fotos and texts real kubrick's fans are going to be amazed by this book that was done very carefully. Summary: Worth the weight (and price) While Kubrick has been gone for years, his films remain a testatment to how good and how diverse the work of a single director can be. The Stanley Kubrick Archives is an unsurpassed collection of a life's work, perfectly broken into two distinct sections. The first section undertakes a belief of Stanley's that (I'm paraphrasing poorly)"the image should speak for itself". This sees all of Kubrick's films being given the storyboard treatment (sans ANY text) with perfectly-graded stills from all the key scenes from all of his films. Truly, when looking over 2001's stunning imagery, it's impossible not to hear the classical soundtrack playing in your head. The second section is the truly archival section of the book with in-depth analysis given to all of Kubrick's titles plus some of his work prior to becoming a feature filmaker. Projects unrealised by Kubrick himself, such as A.I. and Napoleon, are also given some print. This section is a wealth of information that will delight for years to come. While the price & weight of the book (it's staggeringly heavy but comes in a cool-as cardboard carry case) are great, this is money well spent by any enthusiast of quality films. While Kubrick's films were not all masterpieces, as the present overall quality of film seems to be on the decline, his body of work is certainly worth remembering. Summary: The 'Big Red Kubrick 'Book! Astounding example of how certain books should be made. Obviously, there is a niche market for this kind of bookmaking. Luckily, us dedicated Kubrick fans can now relish all of it. The book contains amazing details and 'behind the scenes' views on the making of all of the Kubrick flicks. I'm positive that no other director and visionary would have their works commited to such a project other than Kubrick. The final touch is the inclusion of an actual strip of 70mm motion picture film from 2001 that Kubrick himself possessed. My copy shows Frank jogging in the centrifuge. The only caveat is the splitting of some wide screen shots between pages in the first half of the book. Other than that this book qualifies as one of the best examples of how a book should be dedicated, regardless of price, for a one of kind film director. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Thorough - but often filled with convoluted waffle. This book starts out well, explaining the topics clearly and without a lot of unnecessary repetition. Unfortunately, the writing style chops and changes throughout the book with the worst written sections being a real chore to plough your way through. Towards the later chapters, it seems as though the authors try to pad out the book as much as possible, repeating points ad nauseam, without adding any new insights. Many of the sentences are structured in unnatural and convoluted ways, severely detracting from the subject content. Most sections of the book could easily be reduced in length by 30%-50% without losing any information, simply by presenting the material concisely and cutting out the repetitive waffle. If you value your time and already have a foundation in C, I suggest the book "Thinking in C++" by Bruce Eckel. Otherwise the book does serve as quite a good reference. Spelling mistakes and coding errors were fairly minimal, with perhaps only a few every hundred pages or so. Summary: Birthday Request My son requested this book for his 24th birthday. He is currently employed in the gaming industry. Summary: The Best C++ Book This is by far the best C++ book I have ever read. It is comprehensive, explanations are simple and to the point, and, up-to-date. I am referring to the 4th edition, of course. The earlier editions might be a bit outdated. Summary: |
