Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: Not for Dummies Now if I were a dummy, and in many ways I am, I would be furious with this book. It doesn't mention until page 4 that the author assumes you've already had a year of algebra. What if I hadn't? What if I was picking up this book because I wanted to learn algebra from scratch? Most anyone would naturally assume that's what this book is for. But right away you'd be lost. Even the "fun facts" would make me heave this thing out the window. Info about "three-term quadratic equations" is a fun fact? Not if you're a compleat dummy and you haven't the foggiest what this woman is talking about. The 2 stars are generous. It's not too bad for an overview of something you already know and merely want to to remember. Thank my stars I do know algebra, but damn...dummies beware. Summary: What???? This book is not for beginners. It assumes you've had at least a year of algebra education. Summary: Good for me This book was good for me in my Masters program. Now if I can only get my son to use it to pass high school Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Best book for any Trigonometry student who is struggling I bought this book and two others at the beginning of my college Trig class. This book is the only one that I used. It was the best investment for the class that I could have made. Trigonometry for Dummies provided all the fundamental concepts that were covered in college Trig and explained them so that even a non-math major like myself could understand. I would highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with college Trigonmetry, or if you are looking for a great book to refresh your skills. Summary: If you're rusty this will be great I teach college trig courses for adults in a technician program at Los Alamos National Laboratory. If you've been out of school for a while, and feel rusty, then this is definitely a great book to invest in. Filled with many clearly written examples, the payoff will be in your grades. Alex Alaniz Ph.D. 1. Please see the reviews of my own strong science fiction book: Beyond Future Shock about the near-terms perils and promise of advanced bio/nano technology in a world still roiled with Middle Age religious conflict and ever growing extreme wealth gradients. 2. I have REVIEWED many books from undergraduate to graduate in: PHYSICS, MATH, ECONOMETRICS, and HISTORY among other areas. Summary: Excellent Book After being out of school for quite some time, I needed a book to get me back up to speed on trig. This book is great. Highly recommended. Summary: |
| Crocheting School: A Complete Course
Publisher: Sterling |

| ISBN: 1402708319 List Price: $24.95 Amazon Price: $16.47 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great guide for those with limited patience! I'd tried new things in crocheting before this book, but really didn't have the patience for the kinds of patterns that read: dsc. *yo 3dc in 1st sc* 2dc [3dc]. Huh??? I'm from Missouri - you've got to show me. Those black and white diagrams of individual stitches like double and triple were ok, but as far as advancing beyond potholders, I wanted to crochet to relax, not decipher some ancient text so I could crochet. This book is great for those of us who want to see a picture of what it's supposed to look like each step of the way. It also shows you some really interesting effects you can create, though there aren't any real patterns per se in the book. However, once you see how the stitches are worked, deciphering those patterns that drove you nuts is a lot easier. Wish I'd found this book before I made all those potholders! Summary: Excellent Book for beginners & experienced crocheters alike All I can say is: There is not much more to add, because everyone who has given a review has pretty much said it all. I bought this book because of the reviews I have read. They are all so right. An excellent book to have in your collection. So definitely buy this book, you will not be disappointed. Summary: WOW! What a book! I came across the book in the library in Panama City Beach during our Thanksgiving vacation. I just sat down on the floor with awe. I went from cover to cover pausing at many items then started back over and looked how finely detailed the book was. Going from what you need to instruction on how to follow directions. The colors chosen are beautiful. The patterns, stiches and projects are awesome. The shapes to make are great. There is just some much good to say about the book. I'm so glad I came back across it to be able to purchase it. It is worth the investment to add to your collection, or the perfect book to start your collection!! Summary: |

Publisher: The MIT Press |
|
| ISBN: 0262193388 List Price: $85.00 Amazon Price: $72.43 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great new programming paradigm. I am currently working as a computer hardware design engineer. I have always been looking for new software methodology to improve my hardware design flow. Prolog, and especially its presentation in this book, shows me an interesting and powerful view of how computer programming should be. Overall, I am a true believer in Prolog and logic programming after reading this book. Summary: One of the 4 best books on computer programming This, to me, is one of the 4 best books on computer programming. Unfortunately, it is hard. Not because the book is poorly written - it is like a wonderful story, but because understanding how to think declaratively after being taught something like C or Java is like someone giving you a pair of wings when you're a mudfish. Thinking declaratively changes how you think about problems and how you write code. It's a career changing experience. This book leads the way. Top 4: * Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (Sussman, Abelson) * The Art of Prolog by Sterling/Shapiro * Introduction to Algorithms by Cormen, etc. * Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming by Van Roy and Haridi Summary: A classic This book is a must for anyone starting to program in Prolog or interested in logic programming. A downsize of the book (if any) can be that it could have detailed more in the respect of Prolog's applications. The pleasant style of the authors would have made a wonderful introduction into these fields. A real pleasure to read. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: important work for more than just designers... ...or perhaps it's just that "design" is an extremely broad category. Sterling presents a futurity that is at once realistic and utopian, frightening and hopeful. This book would be useful for not just anyone designing anything, but anyone concerned with the future, how to achieve real sustainability, or how all that geeky stuff (you occasionally read about in the Wired you pick up at the airport) will really effect you. I agree with another reviewer that the actual print design of the book is a hindrance, which is ironic; my distaste for it was only made worse by having already heard Sterling brag on it during a talk. But even with this beef, I have to give it a full five stars based on the content alone. Summary: SPIMES = Wired In `Shaping Things' Sterling shifts gears from fiction writer to activist. This concise book was written to inspire designers to visualize radical scenarios connecting information technology and sustainability. Sterling suggests new connections between the virtual world and the physical world that will have you rethinking many of your assumptions about how we relate to products. If you design artifacts, machines, gizmos or products, then read this book! SPIMES = Wired. Post-Industrial = Tired. Industrial = Expired. Summary: thinking outside of the box This slim book, readable in a few short hours is, IMO, a very thoughtfull view of the issues facing design in a post modern world, with some insightful guideposts about designing in this world. I think it is way ahead of the curve in the area, discussing issues that I never see in any amount of design magazines and books that populate the shelves of bookstores. This is not a book about the form of things - the typical fetishist approach of most books about design - but the information that is wrapped around stuff as it makes its way through its cycly of production, use and discard. Sterling writes clearly and concisely on the future and design of informational products, something he calls SPIMES, which contain information on time, place and state. His ideas are thought provoking. I have already recommended this book to some designer friends - I hope they pick up a copy and read it. Highly recommended. Summary: |
