Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: Pretty disappointing I bought this book to help with some work I wanted to do on my Girlfriend's FWD Subaru Legacy. I highly recommend finding another book. This book is first, aimed at AWD models, is too broad to cover specifics, and as it is, the pictures are so dark that it's hard to see small pieces. I've done about three minor jobs (replacing the factory rear speakers as they were blown- it didn't even tell you how to take the rear deck apart, drum brakes, and trying to locate the sensor in the gas tank), and all three, the book was worthless, even as a reference point. Aside from basic info, don't count on this book for much, unless you have the exact vehicle they used to illustrate the book. Summary: Don't Buy a Chilton's Subaru Legacy Manual This book has errors of omission and commission. It will contradict itself from one section to the next, and doesn't portray information in a coherent format. I have learned to regard the guidance given in the book with a certain amount of skepticism. Only recommend this book if you absolutely cannot find anything else. Summary: Worse than worthless This manual is garbage. I've tried to use it for three separate jobs on my 96 Legacy and every time it has proven worthless. The latest example concerns the camshaft position sensor. The manual lists trouble codes that would confirm the diagnosis, but lacks sufficient info to get the car to display the codes. The book gives only a vague arrow in the general direction of the sensor location. It details the steps to remove the timing belt in order to change the sensor on the Legacy. As I look at it, and as my mechanic assures me, the sensor can be removed and replaced on a 96 Legacy without disassembling anything else. Worse than worthless, this book would have me spending hours on a 2 minute job! I'm going to buy the Haynes book, and never buy another Chilton. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Such a book! This is one of the single best repair books ever written. I am a rotten mechanic. This gave me enough confidacne to do some work. Plus, the idiot part gave me a lot of knoweldge that has transfered to differing situations. I read the first edition more than 10 years ago and this is still my favorite. Now I just need one to cover my 83 mustang. Summary: Be a Starship Subaru captain! Being a previous VW Bug owner and having gotten the original "VW Idiot's Guide" all greasy and dirty, I love this book. (It was fascinating to learn that Fuji (Subaru) built their motor based on the original Porsche/VW design but added water cooling!).It puts you in touch with your car...gives you confidence that you can become a hobbiest/mechanic... and you can easily figure out what maintenance you can do at home with minimum tools and which maintenance you should let some real mechanic take on. Best of all: Save money! Do maintence yourself! Spot problems before they amount to big money! As they say in the original VW book: "Know your ass....(donkey)" and it will treat you well! Summary: Absolutely fantastic I never really knew a thing about cars, and received this as a gift 8 years ago. Motivated by limited cash and that nagging sense of being taken advantage of at car repair places, I started making my own repairs and doing my own maintenance. My 84 GL is, now, in way better shape than my dogeared, oil-stained copy of this book, and I feel much more in control Owens rules--the book is exhaustive and methodical and, at the same time, entertaining. The advice is wise (like that of a cool older brother, in one reviewer's words), the directions precise, the illustrations great (especially the one with the dogbone, the pie, and the toilet). Thanks, Larry & Joe. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great read. Shortly after buying a WRX I received this book from my girlfriend. I read it all the time. Great pictures and technical information as well as Subaru's rally history with updates on standings and drivers by year. This book is a great addition if you are a Subie nut or just love to know everything possible about the Impreza series. While it's true this book won't help you take apart or assemble your Subaru it will give you a tremendous amount of detailed information about the cars roots. Summary: Who wrote the editorial review? What kind of ignorant redneck jackass wrote the editorial review for this book on Amazon.com? Rice rocket? Talk about a condescending ignorant rascist remark. The entire editoral review is worthless. It appears to be written by some out-of-touch 40+ who wouldn't know what to do with a Subaru if he had one, much less has any actual knowledge of them. Sorry you have nothing intelligent to say about superior Japanese engineering. Aside from the ignorant 'rice rocket' comment in the review, everyone besides the editor knows that all Subaru's are powered by boxer engines and always have been. Also, AWD is not the same as 4WD. The book is worth the purchase price, but the editorial review on Amazon is nothing but worthless drivel. Summary: ALL YOU WORMS AT I-CLUB.COM NEED TO CHECK THIS OUT I have always been a fan of Subarus and this book is the most extensive thing I have found about its history. If you don't own a Subaru, you will after reading this book. There are many pictures showing the different models. I think there might be EVERY brochure ever released from FHI(for the impreza). Although, there is some technical info, I wouldn't rely on this book to help you take apart your car. GREAT BOOK!!! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Rockhopjohn I have owned 3 Subaru Outbacks, 1996, 1998, and 2004, and I have found this manual to be useful with all of them. I am only doing the home mechanic types of repairs, so for things like changing and bleeding brakes, spark plugs, fuel filters, thermostats, it has saved me a lot of guess work. Not sure I would want it if I had to do a timing belt or head gaskets, or any other sort of major engine tear down. Great manual for GENERAL MAINTENANCE. Summary: As good as it gets This manual does pale in comparison to a Bently, but so do all other manuals. I have found that the manual is an excellent guide for anyone with some mechanical know-how, and it provides the most comprehensive information available. There are things that are a little inacurate that I have found, or have seen other sources that contradict how things work... But even the Subaru factory repair manuals have this problem. My major criticism of this manual is it does not get into describing what are 'common' failures; other Haynes manuals that I have picked up ocasionally hinted at what kinds of failures the owner can 'expect' to experience. In my opinion, there should be an section devoted to the whens, whys and hows of headgasket failure, oil seal leaks, and valve cover leaks. My second criticism is that it doesn't explain part numbers, nor does it describe some repair materials well enough; like saying 'anerobic sealant' or 'gasket maker' where Subaru technical manuals very clearly describe what materials should be used. Combine this with all the documentation that is out there from the major Subaru message boards, and I doubt there is any repair you can't accomplish. Me? I'm replacing my headgaskets, timing belt and a whole lot of seals this weekend. Summary: It is OK The book was good enough to guide me for head gaskets replacement. With the book description, a little imagination, and some web sources (especially for torque specifications) I was able to accomplish the work. The electrical schemes are very general lacking a lot of information (like rear power socket, heated seats, etc.) Some of the diagrams are inaccurate. The one for automatic window switch, for example, on 1997 Outback reverses the contacts for "up" and "down" position. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: zero practical value I bought this book attracted by "maintaining, modifying" words pointed in the title, however, this book has nothing to do with aforementioned subjects. Mostly it is the history of Impreza. This book has a zero practical value for maintenance. I am very disappointed by misleading title. Summary: Very cool book for WRX/Impreza fans If you like the WRX or the Impreza in general, then this book does a really nice job of covering the differences between model years, and various international models, with some maintenance and modification information information to boot. Also contains some great photos for the various models and options. Summary: |
