Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: GREAT MANUAL! This manual is awesome for all your mac needs. It really has so much detail and anyone can use it to fix most problems on their mac. It has really been useful since I purchased it about a month ago. Has really helped with startup issues (not that Macs have very many). And for general use, it contains great details about how to use OS X and the programs that come with it! Would definitely recommend for all Mac users, especially beginners! Summary: The Best Tiger Manual -- Stand up and applaud this book After reading this book, I felt like I had to stand up or at least applaud. It was really a masterpiece: extremely comprehensive, easy to understand, expertly organized. The missing manual series by O'Reilly claims to be "The book that should have been in the box." This book is to computer manuals what iPods are to digital music. Powerful, yet easy to use The book is designed for someone who has never used Tiger before and is not all that familiar with the Mac either. Unlike a dummies book, he doesn't talk down to you and respects the fact that you can learn things if shown how to use them. This book doesn't just cover Tiger, but also covers the iLife application suite: iMovie, iDVD and iTunes. In fact, I really don't consider this just a Tiger manual. It's really a iMac User's Guide, covering pretty much every aspect of your new Macintosh. Have a problem with your Mac not working right? There's a great troubleshooting section at the end of the book. The index and table of contents is well organized so you can focus on the sections you want to learn more about. For example, if you don't use classic applications (most people don't) then skip over the section. Finding out how to burn a music CD or setting up your email was very easy to find and understand. No aspect of Tiger was left unexplained. The book even explains how to use the voice recognition software..something I've never played with but always wanted to learn how to use Personally, I thought the coverage of Mac to PC and PC to Mac networking was great, since so many people live in mixed computing environments. The major complaint I think some people might have about this book is it's big. Over 800 pages can be a bit intimidating. I showed it to a customer and their response was: " I thought Macs were so easy to use?" Even though it is easy to understand and find the information you want, I wouldn't suggest it as the first manual to a new Mac user. I still think Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: Peachpit Learning Series by Robin Williams is the best beginners book for Mac users. She really walks people through every step with bright colorful pictures. The ideal user of this book is someone who understands the basics of Tiger and their Mac but says "I don't think I'm using my Mac to it's full potential." After reading this book, they'll have a complete arsenal to understand any aspect of their Mac. Pros: The ideal book for Tiger users: complete, detailed, and easy to understand Cons: Not designed for brand new users with no previous Mac experience, the amount of information may seem overwhelming Summary: Good but not Great I recommend this book for most intermediate users but if you really want to everything, there isn't information here. | Do What You Are : Discover the Perfect Career for You Through the Secrets of Personality Type--Revised and Updated Edition Featuring E-careers for the 21st Century

Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: Perhaps I had overly high expectations... While I am aware that no career book is going to be a holy grail, this one in particular seemed rather useless. "You are an INFP. You feel fulfilled by helping people, so go find a job where you can do that" was pretty much the extent of the advice it offered. Summary: I read Do What You Are...and I AM After 40 years of relatively unrewarding jobs, and 40 years of wanting to "find my true self", I started on the path towards becoming a writer...a lifelong dream. Along the way, I read "Do What You Are". In addition to enjoying and agreeing with the authors, I found out that, based on their means of discovering the possible perfect careers, they agreed with me. Nothing solves all the problems, but this would be a great help to most people who read it. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it can be a bit daunting to go through if you are not already motivated, but it is worth the effort. Summary: Matching your ideal career based on your Personality...but all the Information is on the Internet ! This is a decent book that is designed to determine a suitable occupation for yourself based on your Myer-Briggs personality. I did not read everything in the entire book, as I felt a lot of the material was too detailed in technical nature. For instance, the breaking down of someone's personality type (e.g ENFJ) into EN or FJ and looking at each aspect was not necessary. I believe the most important aspect of the book was the analysis of each of the 16 Myer-Briggs personality type. And that is where the problem of the book is found. Each personality type is examined in about 16 pages. They describe how a certain personality type behaves, the idea occupation for them, and two career profiles of people under that personality classification. But all the same information can be found on the internet using a simple Google Search. There was nothing new or interesting about my personality type that I did not know prior to reading articles on the Internet. The best part of the book (16 pages ONLY of your own personality type....nobody really cares/reads about other personality types aside from their own) can easily be found doing a Google Search on the internet. No need to buy the book. The rest of the book (200+ odd pages) goes into too much detail that is not necessary for most people to understand. Really who needs to know what it means to be a Judger. (Ironically, all the information on that can also be found for free on the Internet.) My advice is to rent this book. People should not buy this book unless you do not have access to the Internet or is an avid-reader of Personality-traits. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Great Read for Middle School children This book deals very well with controversial topics such as drunk driving and suicide. Draper tells the story in a matter of fact manner that students will read and learn from. As a teacher of middle school children, I found this book very helpful and moving and well researched. Though somewhat predictable and heavyhanded, the story achieves it purpose and would be welcome in any classroom library. Summary: Tucson Tears of a tiger was written by Sharon Draper and published in 1994. The main characters are: Andy Jackson, Robert Washington, BJ Carson, Tyrone and Gerald. After a team Victor A group of guys decided to go out and celebrate with a little alcohol, as the Party. The driver of the car Andy ran into a wall. Killing his best friend, the team captain Robert Washington. After the crash Andy struggles to get his head together mentally. Andy was a Great student and now his grades have tremendously dropped. Before the crash Andy was a warm hearted person. He was doing his best to please of others. This life changing Experience had a drastic affect on Andy. Constantly depressed and not knowing where to turn Andy had fetal thoughts of suicide. His parent made him start to go and see a psychologist little did they know it was too late. Andy blamed himself and had dreams of the death of his best friend. At the end of the book Andy takes life into his own hands and kills himself. His little brother Monty found him in his bed dead. I really liked this book. I am not a reader but when I find books that interest me, I think the whole world so read it. This is a lesson of not to take life for granted because you never know we wont be there when you wake up. Summary: What I've Been Saying All Along When publishing my own book, I heard repeatedly that young African-Americans do not read but I think that's a lie. If more books came out that they could relate to, especially for boys, then the percentage of readers would change. When I initially got this book, I looked at how it was written and became concerned about the style. Everything is all dialogue--and as much as I like dialogue, I thought maybe the author was pushing it too much. Wrong! I realized quickly that if the dialogue is informative enough, it will make a reader feel like they're being told the story in a conversational manner...and in a different manner at that. This book was outstanding. I love realistic views of how teenagers REALLY act, feel, talk, and relate to other peers. Ofcourse not every teenager runs into a drunk driving issue, a suicidal peer, or parent abandonment...but even those who don't can probably relate to this book. Draper did not ONLY concentrate on a boy's feelings after his friend died in his car, but also on the relationship between young lovers, parenthood, a teacher/coach relationship with his/her students, and how peer pressure affects students in general. I am so impressed and definitely glad that Amazon.com recommended this book to me. Great job, Sharon! Absolutely great job! Summary: |

Publisher: North Atlantic Books |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: waking the tiger a worthwhile read for those who have or have not experienced trauma in their lives. Summary: A framework for understanding trauma This is an excellent book for anyone who wants a mature view of what trauma is and how we heal from it. Peter Levine makes a compelling case that trauma is unique to the human species because our rational brains get in the way of the organism's instinctive physiological responses to life-threatening situations. In a case study near the end of the book, Levine clearly demonstrates his belief that re-exposure to traumatic circumstances as a way to heal must be gradual and at the organism's own pace. Cathartic experiences may be dramatic and lead us to believe we are helping, but in his view this approach risks deepening the traumatic symptoms. This is an excellent book, written in clear, non-clinical language that any non-professional can understand. Summary: Helping families who hurt Trauma can occur for a wide variety of reasons. In my family across two generations there have been suicides, schitzophrenia, abandonment and childhood abuse. We are a, so called, 'normal' middle class family. No family is immune from traumatic episodes. I found Peter Levine's ideas insightful and helpful. His outline of the causes of medical trauma are particularly interesting. The chapters dealing with trauma in children help me consider avenues of assistance to help my grandchildren following the suicide of their mother. I would like to read Levine's subsequent book about childhood trauma. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: About Paper Tiger This book was not only very instructive and held my attention, but it was also quite funny. I read it over a weekend and really enjoyed it. Summary: USGA ads say "These guys are good"... THIS BOOK IS GREAT. Intrigued by the books premise and impressed by the esteemed critical acclaim on the cover, I picked up this book on a recent trip to the United States. I laughed, I cried, and I cried laughing as I read the book cover to cover on the 7 hour plane ride back to England. My only regret is that I didn't buy more than one copy, as my friends and the the friends of my friends are now waiting eagerly to read the book which (as yet) doesn't have a UK relese date! Tom's self disciplined, determined quest to fulfil his dream, is the keystone of the book. However, it is the obstacles he encountered and his responses to them that provide the comedy, the tragedy and ultimately a love story about golf and a girl. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has ever tried to play golf; the husbands, wives, boyfriends and girlfriends of anyone who plays golf; and to anyone who had a dream and motivated themselves to do something about it. Summary: Good from "Tee to Green" then a few "Three Putts" Mr. Coyne had a good premise (see "A Fine Green Line" by John Paul Newport, an almost identical concept book) and it kept my attention. Very compelling to put yourself in the author's golf shoes and imagine focusing on only ONE goal - seeing how good you can get at golf in one year (aided by a professional possey: swing guru, head guru, physical trainer, equipment guru). How can an avid golfer not follow this Walter Mitty story? That said, the second half of the book is full of typographical errors, grammatical errors and poor spelling. I cannot remember the last time I saw a book with so many annoying little mistakes. The other critism: I would have enjoyed more of a travelogue element to the book, describing more about the author's trips to Canada and Australia. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A must have I bought this for my daughter when she got her new MacBook (replacing an XP Prof/IBM Thinkpad). She didn't want a book, but right away realized this was a must have. I plan to buy myself a Mac and will buy another as I love this book. The Mac is easy to use but from the Windows world we are coming from another world and just can't see (or believe) the way things on done with Tiger and then are surprise how easy and elegant it is. I am an IT professional. Buy the book you won't regret it. Summary: Not good for non-technical PC Users switching I really had high hopes for this book. So many of my clients are switchers. They go from a PC to a Mac and don't have a grasp of any of the basics. "Where's my Outlook? Internet Explorer? Oh no!!" Unfortunately this book is for intermediate PC users who are switching to the Mac, not novices. The book assumes knowledge of how to configure a PC and then builds on that knowledge for you to be able to do it on a Mac. The book tells you how to move your files from your PC to your new Mac, PC programs and their Mac equivalents, and how to configure your Mac. Not much time is really spent on how to "use" your Mac. To be fair, that's what the title says "Switching to the Mac", not "How to use a Mac, Switcher edition." The best chapter by far is the "Transferring email and contacts" I took copious amounts of notes because the chapter was so detailed. Anyone who wants to move their emails from their PC should buy this book. It covers using Outlook, Eudora, Netscape and more to their Mac equivalents, including OS X's Mail. In my experiences, people switch to a Mac because they found PCs too difficult to understand. Explaining things in PC terms kinda defeats the purpose of switching. For novices, look at one of the Intro to Tiger books. If someone isn't an intermediate PC user trying to switch, but a novice...by this book for the person setting up your Mac so they can get all your information off your PC and make the transition to Mac as seemless as possible. Pros: Expert advice on how to take your files, settings, and programs from a PC to a Mac Mac: If you wanted to learn all that stuff, you'd probably still be using the PC Summary: The best Mac book for switchers! I have given copies of this book to several friends who were thinking about switching or had made the decision to buy a Mac. This book does a great job of explaining how to utilize the many wonderful features of the Mac while comparing how the terminology or a function differs in the Windows world. Macs are fun & logical but they're not dumbed down; every user can gain much from spending some time with a Missing Manual book. I own a number of the Missing Manual books & have found them to all be invaluable. I personally use the Tiger OS MM book by David Pogue for even more information. Summary: |

Publisher: Peachpit Press |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: An excellent book It is excellent as far as it goes. I wish it was somewhat easier to use by being more complete. Summary: About Mac I like Robins ways of teaching, and her book is great. For me it is a bit confusing as I have to keek refering back to other sections. Otherwise great. Summary: Poor effort Robin Williams usually does a superb job - she's fun to read, has a perspective which is easy for the reader to understand and puts information clearly while not talking down to readers. Not this time. If you want a book which tells you more than the very simplest of info about Tiger, don't buy this one. I'm an intermediate level user and I found that there are many glaring gaps in her lessons. I ran into many snags in getting used to switching over from System 9 and she didn't address any of the problems. Nor was her basic information about how Tiger operates useful in helping me trouble shoot the problems. I wouldn't recommend the book to a new user either, because it was so superficial. A minor irritant is that the editor (or somebody) did a very poor job of proofing it. There were a significant number of typos throughout the book. Summary: |
