Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Take care of your Volkswagen hybrid!!?? First of all, I have used both, but this manual is significantly more in depth than the Chilton's guide for these models, especially in the electrical and body schematics. It's definitely worth the extra bucks for the breadth of expert advice and will most likely keep good resale value long after the car is gone. 1999 to 2005 were great years for the VW hybrid engine. I'm not talking about gas/electric, but gas/oil: the amazing (and unexplained) ability of the VW engine to burn through copious amounts of oil (but still getting decent gas mileage). Unfortunately, if you are buying this book, there is a good chance that you know exactly what I am talking about! Take matters into your own hands! Summary: Service Manual for Volkswagens I can honestly say that this is the manual I recommended to all of my Volkswagen owning friends. All of them. Surprisingly all of them bought it. Not only does this manual help me fix problems that are serious to moderate to just plain weird it helps me learn alot about my car as well. It helped me learn the things I need to get my car "Bella" the Volkswagen in a better shape. I recently had to change my water pump and I was going to take it to the mechanic which cost me alot of money, and instead of taking it to the mechanic I used the simple knowlege and the manual and I changed my water pump. Yes it has that too. By learning and reading the manual everytime I need to use it I am able to fix other cars as well that are Volkswagens. This knowledge that I gain from this great manual will stick with me forever. I am very satisfied with it. I am very thankful that I bought it and alot of my other friends that own the manual are thankful as well. It trully is worth every penny that you spend when you buy this awesome manual. Summary: Volkswagen Jetta, Golf, GTI Service Manual: 1999-2005 1.8l Turbo, 1.9l TDI, Pd Diesel, 2.0l Gasoline, 2.8l VR6 Awesome manual. Haynes is cheaper, but this one is so much more detailed. Suck it up and spend the money, it's worth it. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: One of the Two If you're brave enough to take on the care, maintenance, and/or restoration of an old VW bus, this book, along with John Muir's How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive, is a must-have. While Muir provides the how-to, the Official Service Manual provides the what and where one needs to care for an old VW. I've owned a lot of them (VWs and books). Get this one up-front and save yourself a lot of grief. Summary: Useful, Recommended, but with Caveats This book has its uses. If you have a need to do moderately extensive work on your VW yourself, it's probably wise to have this book in your shop. It's inferior to John Muir's classic Idiot's Guide (ISBN 0945465122 ) in terms of providing effective ways of repairing your VW (not to mention less fun), but it works well as a supplement to the Idiot's Guide. It's a good secondary reference when using the Idiot's Guide as a primary manual for maintenance & repair. For instance, the Service Manual will often contain illustrations of tiny parts within parts that are lacking in the Idiot's Guide, which can be useful when trying to visualize how things fit together. When something goes wrong, turn to the Idiot's Guide first; when you want a little more padding to get your head around a problem, the Service Manual is often just the ticket. In short, something to keep in the garage rather than in the bus (as you should do at all times with the Idiot's Guide). Highly recommended for this purpose. Summary: Dissapointed I bought this book, Volkswagen Station Wagon/Bus: Official Service Manual Type 2, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978 by Inc. Volkswagen of America and I paid the full price for it...because my dad told me it was the best Volkswagem manual ever written. My project is to redo much of the wiring and restore his entire 1971 Kombi...He told me there are many beautiful color wireing diagrams that match the real colors of the wires, with no black, gray, and white coded drawings. That's why I bought this particular book. The book written discriptions are very good, but we need color wiring drawings. Summary: |

It paid for itself within 3 or 4 days when we were able to repair our 95 Golf ourselves using this book and a little bit of diagnosis. The book is easy enough for just about anyone to use and detailed enough to make any repairs. Summary: The best Don't waste your money on any other manual. Ante up and get the Bentley first. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Note to "Do-It-Yourselfers" Let's get something straight right off the bat about this manual, it's the Factory Repair Manual, originally intended for mechanics at the dealership. It assumes you are experienced and already know which end of a screwdriver works. Its not going to teach you 'how' to work on your Vanagon, it's the 'bible' on the repair procedures on for your Vanagon. I suspect the negative reviews for this manual are mostly from 'newbies' and novices. What this manual is most useful for is the factory approved method for servicing your Vanagon, not "Auto Mechanics 101'. So if you're looking for a manual to teach you how to work on your Vanagon, THIS IS NOT IT! On the other hand, if you looking for a manual that explains the factory approved method of working on your Vanagon, with all the necessary details and specifications, "BINGO". Naturally, its a translation of a German manual so you have to take that into account too, a translation is only as good as the translator, trust me, I work for a German company in their US plant and this is a very common problem. So be warned about what you're getting if you order this manual. Summary: Essential for the mechanic This book is a bible for the mechanic. I found information here that helped me fix starter, ignition, valve and fuel injection problems (this reference manual is considered essential in vanagon discussion groups). Whoever says the information is wrong or incomplete has their heads somewhere other than on their shoulders. As mentioned in another review, the only (less than minor) drawback is the lack of an index which would help considerably with troubleshooting a problem. Of course with that addition the book would probably become even more expensive than it already is. My major complaint is with the ridiculous prices of all Bentley products. A simple fuel injector costs more now than my first vanagon did years ago, which is even more astounding when you consider that a fuel injector involves about the same electronics wizardry as a $.35 light switch. Summary: It's a fairly decent book Though this book has some bad reviews they are most likley the result of incompentent do-it-your self people. If you have at least a general understanding of engine componants, and a reasonable intellect this book is excellent for you. Some steps can be confusing from time to time, but for the most part are worded well and have very good pictures to accompany the steps. *Note* Besides what else are you going to buy, Haynes and Chilton's don't make a book for the Vanagon. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: If you only buy one book for your VW, make it this one. This is the proverbial "VW bible" Many aircooled VW's come with this book already in the trunk even though the owners manual was lost 30-some-odd years ago. Not only is it full of indespensible information, its also quite an interesting read. John Muir makes it easy to diagnose all sorts of problems your VW might have. The illustrations are all very straight-forward, being drawings instead of photos. And while it is mostly directed to the early bug, every procedure has notes on what will be different in a type 2 or type 3 or super bug. There are several items your bug should never leave home without, a spare generator belt, spare tire, a jack, spare throttle & clutch cables, and a copy of "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive, A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot by John Muir" Summary: More than VW's it teaches mechanics!! I bought this bought back when it was a first edition, and learned all I needed to work on VW's. It teaches not only about bugs and buses, but basic mechanics skills and tricks. Much of this is not needed today; the distributor is a thing of the past, fuel injection has replaced carbs, etc. It is a shame because if mechanics learned these basic things along with the "replace it" mentality, they would all be better diagnosticians and could get to the heart of problems more effectively. I still use the techniques I learned in this book to set the valves on my 2004 BMW motorcycle, because the technology is still the same! It is a great book, a fun read and you will learn a great deal to do with wrenching, perhaps stuff that be applied to other projects you encounter. Summary: How to make this book better? I suppose it could be printed on washable or oil/waterproof material. The book has enough humor in it that it's enjoyable as casual reading. Better than listening to "Car Talk." It's organized well and exceedingly informative, even giving details about where those loose nuts are likely to fall (the Volkswagen's nut's not Tom & Ray). John must have been a Volkswagen god. The artwork is in the style of the 60s' cartoons, but still are clear. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: THE reference manual for your 70's aircooled VW Type-1 Previously had the 60's era manual. It was great too. This is THE manual for servicing an aicooled VW T-1. Some of the tools shown are very specialized (VW) and you will likely have to buy slightly different aftermarket ones to actually use, but the concepts and methods are the same. All specifications needed to assembled/disassemble your ride are here. Written for a shop mechanic, but easy enough for a backyard mechanic to use. Though, not really for the beginner. Summary: Best Book Available!!! This is by far the best shop manual available for the Beetle and Ghia! I have a 1970 Volkswagen Beetle Type I, and the Bently Manual has helped me more than any other book during the car's restoration. It has just about all the information you could need from a manual. And hey, it *is* the official service manual, published for Volkswagen!! There is only one downside which is not a major problem but certainly would help: there's no Index. Summary: Too Expensive, No Index, Not Good for the Average Joe If you were to only buy one book on how to repair your Bug, DON'T buy this one. While it does contain a lot of information, it has several problems. First, it does not have an index. Second, it does not even have a centralized table of contents. Instead, each chapter has its own table of contents. Next, the book assumes you are working in a profesional mechanics shop, with hydraulic lifts, etc. This was made clear to me, when the section on removing the engine said to LOWER the car to 3 feet.. Shoot, I barely got the car above 2 1/2 feet with my floor jack, and that was using wood props. Also, they tell you to use lubricants that are not common, which can be substituted with a more common lubricant. If you have the money to blow, it probably is good to have this guide, as it is the "official" one, but I would recommend the Haynes guide above this one any day. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Not quite what I was looking for I must qualify that I am not a mechanic by training but enjoy doing a lot of the work in our cars. That said I found this manual disappointing in that it really does not offer any kind of help in the maintenance of the car for people with little mechanical training. By "Service Manual" I understood that there would be detailed information of how to do certain things like working on the AC components, transmission, etc, that is more that just changing your oil. It is not there!. It just gives you pictures of part by part components with little descriptions of procedures. I can get the pictures in the Internet! going to a bookstore does no good because this is one of those sealed books until you buy. I just did not like it and will sell it as soon as I can :^( Summary: Great Purchase Very detailed text for repairs and maintenance. Makes even the daunting task relatively easy. To have 5 stars, it should have more detailed pictures. Color would receive a 6th star. Best manual on the market. Worth it 110% Summary: |
