Summary: Fascinating and original , despite major character flaw.
Creating a fascinating counterpoint between the infamous tragedy of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire and the world of genetic studies and music, Katharine Weber had me enthralled from the words "This is what happened." Even when she departs from 106-year-old Esther's recollections of the fire to discuss the evolution of George's musical genius, she does so easily and with the ability to hold this reader in her grip. The subject matter is never less than intriguing, often mesmerizing. George, Rebecca, and Esther feel like true, living people I would want to know. Unfortunately, in the character of Ruth Zion, the feminist herstorian, Weber has crafted someone so abrasive, so annoying and utterly insensitive that she is more a caricature than a believable character. This was a huge letdown in comparison to the more humanly drawn central figures. Nevertheless, this is one of the better reads I've enjoyed this summer. The ending, though not the total surprise some have suggested, is heartbreakingly written, with just a touch of ambiguity to leave me a bit puzzled about the other triangle, the love triangle of Esther, Jacob and Pauline.
Summary: extraordinary novel like nothing I have ever read
This is a devastatingly great novel. It's brilliant, subtle, witty, filled with real pathos and real insight about the dilemma of being human. I can't remember reading anything like this before. This book deserves some literary awards and will surely be on some shortlists at the end of the year.
Summary: I loved this book
TRIANGLE is is, by far, the best book I've read this year. Beautifully written, weaving the tragedy of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire with an innovative expression of science as music (and the beauty and power of both). The book is subtly mysterious and humorous as well. Just beautiful.

Summary: Excellent and easy recipes
Everything we have tried so far in this cookbook has been wonderful. The recipes are easy and super tasty!
Summary: A great book
I gave this book to my husband, who does not cook at all. It gives thorough and understandable instructions, and he can't wait to get started grilling! I highly recommend this book. The only grilling book you need.
Summary: Weber's Big Book of Grilling
certainly a must have for those starting in the Grilling scene. Not as good as his book "Weber's Real Grilling". This book can take you from back yard burger flipper to expert chef of baby backs and tri-tip or salmon and lamb. There is not a single receipe I have tried that I did not like, some are appreciated more than others though.
Easy instructions and overview of the fundamentals and the reason behind them. Well laid out and easy to find the things you want. Beautiful pictures that you should NOT look at if you are hungry, you will try everything.
Really the book that helped me understand the Grill is really your outdoor oven with so many more flavors. I have made breads, meats, fruits even cookies and the family thinks I know what I am doing. Grilling has become nearly an everyday affair as opposed to occassionally on weekends. I run through 5ga. propane in a month now. Electric bill is down without having to run the oven or trying to cool a kitchen I just heated with the oven.
A MUST HAVE ALONG WITH WEBER'S REAL GRILLING>.

Summary: Excellent for new Booksellers
I have recently started a book selling business online and this book has been very beneficial to me. I have developed a business plan and a lot of what I wrote came straight from ideas in the book. It is practical, easy to read, and full of great insights. Very helpful in showing you how to pick out books that sell. Lots of ideas on software tools to make your business flow better and provide excellent customer service. If you are planning to open an online book store in any of the major market avenues such as Amazon or E-bay or others, I highly recommend this book, it will be very helpful.
Summary: A lot of good information
I think this book gives a lot of helpful information if you are interested in selling used books. After I read the book I felt I had a pretty good idea of what I would be getting into if I decided to go down that path. So I think this book is helpful from the angle of helping make a decision about trying to sell used books and helpful in getting you started if you do decide to sell used books.
Summary: great info for the beginner
I think this is a great book for those of us who have just become interested in bookselling. I felt that in the first 10 pages of reading, I had already gotten more value out of the book than what I paid for it. My ability to spot a good buy has increased ten-fold. Good beginner information, good comparisons of different web sites, different book suppliers, different shipping suppliers. Will keep for reference.

Summary: A great book for the grilling beginner and vet
The results of every recipe we've tried have been superb, there are outstanding photos with every entry, it contains a bunch of great tips and tricks, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

I have been grilling for about 30 + years now, and like others I found out that some of the things I have been doing I have been doing wrong for that long, so that alone made it worth the price.

The only issue I have had is trying to find some of the ingredients, such as granulated garlic of all things, in our local stores. But the internet solved that problem (I don't know what I am going to do with a pound of granulated garlic, but hey, we have it on hand now and it was cheap!) so if you live in a small town (we don't) you may have to hit the 'net for some of the fixins. All in all, a solid A+ on this one.

Wishing you good grilling!
Summary: "Real" Good Reading
Like other reviewers before me, I had been a long time user of the Weber Big Book of Grilling, or the "Red Book" as it is affectionately known in our house. As an avid griller and an avid lover of Weber Grills, I was delighted to see another entry from Jamie Purviance. As I have previously described in my "Red Book" review, I insist that a cookbook have good recipes with incredible pictures. Sometimes half the fun of grilling is simply flipping through the pages of "Real Grilling" and deciding what to have. "Real Grilling" surpasses the "Red Book" by having pictures for every recipe. I could not have asked for more!

Purviance does a nice job of providing recipes coupled with grilling and preparation tips. For friends that I know who are finally moving their grilling past weekend hamburgers and hot dogs, this is a well received feature.

Judging by the number of food stained pages in my copy of "Real Grilling", I would say that Weber has another winner. My only reason for giving "Real Grilling" four stars is not because of content, but because after the heavy use of my book over the past year, the pages have pulled away from the spine. My "Red Book" never suffered this ailment. I am disappointed that "Real Grilling" has. I have had incredible experience with Weber customer service through the years when dealing with grill parts. I have yet to see how things are on the publishing side of things. Regardless, do not let this deter you from a great grilling cookbook that it also a great afternoon read.

Summary: One of the better ones
Many grilling cookbooks are repetitive in that similar flavours/ingredients appear in many of the recipes. This one too has that disappointment. However there are some exciting recipes in this book which make it better than most. A mango and black bean salsa, and chicken quesadillas flavoured with cilantro and red onions, are two of the standouts that garner rave reviews every time I serve them. The author's use of fresh herbs and his innovative stylings, combined with good photography and efficient (not overly wordy) recipes make it well worth having.

Summary: A Sociology Classic
Modern readers may find the dry style this book is written in a bit boring, but the subject matter makes up for it. Weber looks at 4 branches of Protestantism (Calvinism, Pietism, Methodists, Baptists) and how they each affected the development of modern capitalism. It also sheds light on some of the origins of modern Western beliefs.
Summary: Brazilian reality shows Max Weber was wrong.
I tried to read this book(translated) to the portuguese, about 15 years ago.Even never finishing it, I as a brazilian (unemployed) agronomist must tell the reality about weberianism.
At first, Max Weber was a man looking to show the reality. He wasn't a bigot(or mad) such as Loraine Boettner, Eric Jon Phelps, etc.
With no doubt, Max Weber was a great scholar, a man with great IQ, a man man looking for reality.Even with this qualities, Max weber was wrong.Even a man like Max Weber, like you and me, is ever a prisioner of his times, informations and reality.
The core idea of this book is that capitalism, industrial revolution and modern science were made by protestantism.
Very believed idea in Weber's times.
In fact, Weber puts "the cart ahead of the horse", in this idea.In fact, modern world wasn't created after Luther. It was shaped in XV Century, with the press and Great Navigations.
The press was invented by a catholic german, called Johann Gutemberg. All the great navigators were catholic men.Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Bartolomeu Dias,Cabral, Gil Eanes, etc. 100% of then were catholics and were under catholic kings money and orders. With the Great discoveries the American continent was under Europe's hands. The claim that protestantism was the source of Europe's power was and is a fraud.
In fact economically and lively, after Luther, protestant Germany became a nightmare until the end of 30 years War, in 1648.The claim that protestantism was good for Europe is a possibility, not a fact.
In fact, we could see protestantism is a result of nacionalism, church's abuses, education and greed for church's money.
Not all protestants countries of Europe had good economical results.Germany was doomed after Luther's Reformations. Not all catholic countries had bad economic results, as France shows.Spain and Portugal were bad, after jew's expeling, not after any reformation.
With the Industrial Revolution, coal became condition "sine qua non" for economical sucess. And the Geology(not theology)decided the future for nations in Europe. With no coal Portugal, Spain, Italy were senteced to relatively poverty, in Europe.France with bad coal reserves, has some dificults in industrialization.Belgium, even more than 90% of his population in catholic church, had no economical problems, because Belgium had great coal's mines.
Why England had so good economic results, ahead of every other european country?Beeing an island, England shouldn't have an expensive army against invasions. Then, England could built the biggest navy in the world.Geography, not theology gave economic sucess to England in XVI and XVII Century. With the Industrial Revolution, England had coal reserves looking to be minerated. Geography and later geology gave England industrial and economical sucess. With the 30 years War, Germany was splited in about 300 feufdoms.
The England's decadency also came from no theological problemas, but geological, political and tecnological problems. With the reunification of Germany, an industrial enemy was created in continental Europe. With the invention of airplane, England could be attacked by an enemy with no navy. With the coming of oil's age, England (North Sea oil's reserves not found before the 1960's) had to import100% of his fuel. With both World wars, England's empire was sentenced to death.
Protestantism in fact, like today, was ever divided in thounsands of cults, since his beginnings. If fact all kinds of protestantisms are image and similarity of his human creator, culture and society.Luther made a anti-semithic protestantism suc as himself.Calvin made a bank's friend protestantism, as himself was.And the England's king Henry VIII made an english protestantism. All reformator made a Jesus equal to himself. This fact is true until today.Protestantism don't make a society and culture. In fact a society and a culture makes a protestantism.
The brazilian and latin american reality shows that protestantism itself don't make economical sucess. Here in Brazil, 80% of people who go to a church, go to a protestant (pentecostal) church.Do we have economical sucess with all this protestantism?
NO!!!!
This same fact happened in many parts of latin America.Bad economic results followed protestantism growing.El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua all are as protestants(pentecostals) as Brazil. All with bad economical results.
About 35% of brazilian population are protestants, against about 80% of brazilian maids are protestants. In fact the brazilian protestants are, poorer than the general brazilian population. Also brazilian states with more protestants have bigger crime rates. In fact, more protestants, more crimes in Brazil. The poorest of all religious groups in Brazil are, the protestants(pentecostal).Only protestantism as a medicine for economical, political and cultural troubles is a quackery.
Not a single african or latin american country had good economical results after protestantism's growing. At the same time, Spain with less than 1% of his population protestant, is an economical sucess.Italy and Portugal with only about 2% of protestants are also developed countries.
This book is a source with some good things to read.As I wrote up, Max Weber was an honest scholar, not a mad or a bigot. After all, Max Weber was looking to show us the reality, but he only wrote us rooted, in his own times, believes and realities.Every man is a prisioner of his times, friends and realities. And Max Weber wasn't an exception.

Summary: Bad edition of a somewhat flawed classic
Weber's thesis is plausible-in fact, very plausible. However, it is a bit difficult to take seriously for a couple of reasons. The first is that he doesn't offer much empirical support for his ideas-he relies merely on the fact that the understanding of calling developed by Puritanism is consonant with the attitudes of the "spirit of capitalism." He expresses concern for working only with doctrines that had a kind of widespread psychological effect on the petit bourgeois of capitalist countries, but then doesn't prove that the doctrines he works with did have such an effect.

The second problem is that Weber does not deal at all with the causal links among class, religious doctrine, and capitalist activity. In fact, he explicitly admits (in n. 84 of the last chapter in the Routledge edition) that he has not dealt with class at all in this work. I find that problematic-certainly there seems to be a connection of some kind between the middle-class capitalist ethic and Calvinistic religion, but it is not clear which direction that link goes.

Finally, and only partially relevant, is the fact that this edition and this translation are terrible. The translator, working in the 1930s, assumed (rightly or wrongly) not only knowledge of Italian, French, and Latin on the part of his readers, but knowledge of German. Several quotations in the footnotes were left untranslated, which is not of much use to those who are reading Weber in English because they themselves don't understand German (well). References were also left untranslated; Routledge should have paid a grad student to track down good English editions of the most relevant German, Dutch, and French titles. Most insultingly, this rather expensive reprint edition is riddled with typographical errors. Routledge definitely dropped the ball on this one, perhaps assuming it was a sufficiently important work that even a very, very poor edition would sell.

Summary: Carl Weber at His Finest!
Best-selling author, Carl Weber, has done it again with "So You Call Yourself a Man." This story of three friends, James, Sonny, and Brent, is full of twists and turns that will catch even the best sleuth off guard.

Brent Williams, a born-again Christian, is a brother who could have any woman he wanted. His fiancée' who is also a born-again Christian, is a plus size, hard working woman who is devoted to her man and her church. As the saying goes, "the mind is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Brent's best friend is James Robinson who is married with children. James and his wife Cathy grew apart over the years, but desperately fought to rebuild their relationship. Now James is fighting to keep Cathy from finding out about his affair and the child his ex-lover has just informed him that he fathered three years ago.

James and Brent have another best friend by the name of Sonny Harrison. Sonny married his wife Jessica against the advice of his friends and moved to Seattle. With James' help, Sonny lands a job at UPS and moves back to New York to reunite with his buddies. Meanwhile, Jessica has plans of her own that don't include returning to New York or reuniting with Sonny. Heartbroken for all of a day, Sonny moves on and rekindles a relationship with his high school sweetheart, Tiffany. After losing his wife Jessica, Sonny will do anything not to let this one get away.

This book gives true meaning to the phrase, "what doesn't kill you will only make you stronger." Hats off to Carl Weber for a great read!

Summary: man/ to have and hold or let go
This book covers the top three issues that many men have. I loved the realness of the book. Oh course, the outcome was great as well.
Summary: I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars!!!
I absolutely LOVE Carl Weber!!!
He's returned to the scene with "So You Call Yourself A Man" and he's delivered yet another drama filled tale that draws you into the book from page 1. He also brings in a few characters from "The Preacher's Son", which sets us up to the sequel to this book. I LOVE IT!!!

You will NOT be dissappointed....

Summary: The Truth About This Book
I have researched this book so intensely that it would take far too much room here to express my opinion. While I do not wish to be too negative, I found that the book did not present a balanced view of the study of the mind and human behaviour, and certainly did not back up its claims, nor show the complete truth about several things. To get a more extensive review, you are welcome to go here: http://wisdomfromtheword.blogspot.com/
The name of the site is "Psychology: Core Concepts, Fifth Edition." I have attempted to show another side that was not revealed in this book. The price of the book was not worth the information contained in it, but it was just my opinion, and in writing this, I am only trying to give the student a more fair and balanced view than the book itself did.
Summary: Excellent!
The book was a better deal and in better condition than the books that were offered at my campus bookstore! I am very pleased :-D
Summary: Won't put you to sleep!
I was assigned this text for a college General Psychology course, and upon reading it cover to cover, I found that it was quiet interesting! The book uses simple terms so it is easy to understand what really matters, rather than trying to memorize countless definitions, and it has a story at the beginning of each chapter to help put each concept in perspective. In comparison to other dry, and complicated psychology books which I have had in the past, I highly suggest this book to anyone wishing, or forced to, study psychology.

Summary: O'Reilly Advocates on the lose
Hiya!
this book is a waste of money and space. what kind of an idiot would carry this book around? when all the information is in the linux system itself?? MAN pages and INFO pages.

observe. you can search for utilities in the Linux system by using APROPOS. can you automatically search for the utility you want in this thick thick book? lets say i want to use an editor. all you do from the command line is...

x@y:/$ apropos editor

the linux system automatically searches the database and man pages for the keyword "editor" and you get a whole list of editors you can choose from. try that with this book, all the utilities in this book are listed alphebetically... very good filtering / indexing system indeed *sarcasm*

you have to have pretty good knowledge and know the command and what you're looking for from the beginning to find this book useful. the irony of this is that once your knowledge level is at that level all you really need are the MAN pages.
Summary: Excellent reference book.
Title: Linux in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference (5th Edition)
Authors: Ellen Siever, Aaron Weber, Stephen Figgins, Robert Love, Arnold Robbins
Publisher: O'Reilly
Pages: 925
ISBN: 0-596-00930-5

Linux in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference is exactly what it says in the subtitle. The book is geared almost exclusively to someone sitting at a machine, looking for how a command is used. If you're just starting with Linux and are looking for something to get you started, this is not the book you want. If you want something that will teach you how to use Linux, the introduction recommends Learning Red Hat Linux or Running Linux, both of which are also from O'Reilly. Pick up Linux in a Nutshell if you already have at least a basic understanding of using Linux and want a good book for looking up how specific commands work.

The book starts off with a brief introduction that is equal parts extolling the virtues of Linux and description of the books content. The introduction is followed by a short section (5 pages) listing commands a beginning user might need, followed by a slightly longer (18 pages) list of common System and Network administration commands. These sections contain just enough description to know why and how you might use these commands. But you don't need to wait long before you get more detail. In the next chapter you hit the meat of the book, which is a 500 page alphabetized list of Linux commands. They provide the syntax for the command, along with a list of any options that are available. For me, the value here is not having to swap back and forth between looking at man pages and what I'm trying to work on.

Chapters 4-6 are divided into task related sections. These sections all follow about the same format: a brief description of the process involved, followed by a list of related commands, their syntax, and options. The first of these (Ch 4) describes how to setup a Dual boot machine. They cover the use of LILO and GRUB, providing the commands and options used by each. Chapter 5 covers Package Management, the process used to install and update applications. They cover the use of RPM (Redhat Package Manager) and Debian style packages. They go into detail about various methods using apt, rpm, up2date, yum, and synaptic. They also cover building packages for those developing their own applications. Chapter 6 goes in depth into the functionality of the Bash and Korn shells. It covers both commands that can be issued at a prompt and the use of shell scripts.

Chapters 7-11 cover some of the text manipulation utilities in Linux. Chapter 7 goes over pattern matching and the use of regular expressions. There's also a handy chart of what metacharacters work in which utility. Chapter 8 talks about the text editing functions of Emacs, including a 13 page list of commands and the associated hotkeys. Chapter 9 covers the same for vi, ex, and vim. Chapter 10 covers the application sed and its use as a script based text editing tool. Chapter 11 describes awk/gawk and how they can be used for text processing and as a scripting program language.

Chapters 12-14 address Source code management in Linux. Chapter 12 gives a brief overview of the concepts of multiple developers, code versions, and source code repositories. It also introduces several code management systems. Chapters 13 and 14 go in depth about two of these, CVS and Subversion, respectively.

Finally, there's a comprehensive index of both topics and commands. One of my pet peeves, especially with reference books, is a weak index. That is definitely not the case here. This book makes it easy to find what you're looking for. As far as I can tell, all the commands are indexed, and a random sampling of topics always netted me the correct page number.

In conclusion, Linux in a Nutshell does an excellent job of providing you the commands and utilities available in your typical Linux installation. If you know what you're trying to do, this book is handy for looking up the command and syntax required to do it. The entries are clear and concise, but still provide a good level of detail on the commands, switches, and options they're describing.
Summary: extra reference.
over half of this book consists of material already available in the "man" pages on a linux system.

the book boasts how it includes many many examples on how to use each command, this is utterly false. there are infact too few examples included.

100% of the material in this book can be found on the internet, on the linux system's info and man pages.

this book will not be friendly for the linux newbie. the title is misleading, "in a nutshell" usually means "the basics of a working system". this book is merely acts as reference for the abundance of reference freely available.
