Summary: What you need to know right now to fix the problem
The words 'Pocket Consultant' in the title are interesting. I don't have a pocket anywhere near big enought to hold this 600 page book. On the otherhand, you don't need the wheeled dolly to cart abound the whole library you needed when you were first learning how to be an administrator.

What this book is for is as a refresher when you need some command or switch or flag that you don't use very often and you can't remember what it is. And for that it's ideal. The stated intent of the author is to provide a book that has what you need to do the administrative task at hand without a lot of extra stuff.

This is the second edition of the book. It has been updated to cover Service Pack 1 and Release 2. These releases had significant amounts of code in them and made numerous changes in how everything worked.

If you have the first edition, you know how much you use it and it's time to upgrade your book just as you did your operating system.
Summary: Excellent value
Good depth - covers multiple subjects and has plenty of expert advice. Does an excellent job of covering the most important aspects of Windows administration. I was surprised by how much information is packed into ~600 pages. Concise and portable just like it says. It's the one windows book I use the most.
Summary: Win Svr Adm Guide - mrp
I bought the book as a reference book and it has been able to provide me with easy to find and accurate answers each time I had to refer to it

Summary: Microsoft Windows Books
I ordered these books online and they came in very good shape and were delivered on time. Very informative and helpful books.
Summary: Boring but useful
I used this book to pass the 70-290 exam.
This book contain a lot of useful information.
It is a great reference book too.

Anyway, it is not the style of book that I like to read.

Summary: Thick, shallow, and full of technical errors
Thick, shallow, and full of technical errors. Don't go here lookng for answers, if you find them, they are equally likely to be from some prior (probably re-edited) windows 2000 manual, and sometimes just wrong! I read it from cover to cover...and it didn't get any better.

Summary: Great SQL Server 2005 Reference
The Administrator's Guide to SQL Server 2005 is a great reference for DBAs and System Administrators planning to implement and maintain SQL Server 2005. While the book is written for Administrators, database developers will benefit from it as well. For example, one of my day to day activities includes testing various SQL Server configurations before they are implemented into production environments that require near 100% uptime. The chapter covering high-availability provided thorough step by step instructions on how to set up database mirroring and replication. I was especially delighted to find instructions on how to create a production-like test environment using virtual machine technology at the end of the chapter. Each chapter is well written and loaded with good practical advice. I highly recommend this book!
Summary: Great Resource For the DBA
I bought Buck's other book because I was new to being a DBA, and needed a quick guide. I looked at this one and bought it as well. It has all the features in SQL 2005 that I needed to know, without focusing on programming. I really liked the chapter on the Service Broker, because I heard a few people trying to explain it that just confused me. This one did a great job of laying it out in plain English. He didn't do as well a job on Reporting Services, but he does cover the basics and even shows you how to create a report.

Summary: Sold, detailed and concise
I've bought several of Stanek's other books and they've never let me down. They're always concise and to the point, even his huge Windows Server 2003 Inside Out. I picked up this book on a whim, and I'm sincerely glad I did. Windows Command-line Pocket Consultant covered everything I was looking for and lots more.

I didn't know you could do half of this stuff from the command line. Excellent coverage, it covers 100% of the tasks I perform as an admin everyday and lots of things I don't normally do. Every single chapter is comprehensive, making this a great find! Highly recommended for all skill levels.
Summary: Good, but limited
Good reference for command line administrative tasks. The author succinctly illustrates many tools that an administrator may want to use from the command line. The book is laid out in four basic parts: Fundamentals, System Admin, File and Disk, Active Dir and Network.

Don't expect any more than this. Also don't expect any deep information on registry manipulation, driver discovery, system prep or access control list manipulation. All of which are accessible from the command line, and all of which are insufficiently covered in this book. Cacls, devcon, sysprep, don't expect to find *ANY* information here.

I don't entirely blame the author, I was just a bit disappointed to find out the hard way that this book is geared to a pretty inexperienced audience. But don't fool yourself, this is not a comprehensive refence to Windows command line tools.

What I would like to see: an Advanced Windows Command Line Reference.
Summary: Una excelente obra de consulta

Summary: This is a great book!!!
If I could give this book 10 stars I would. When I read the first couple of pages, I knew this was just the book I was looking for. The book was not boring and every chapter has something useful. I have finally figured out why some of my group policies were not functioning properly and the intellimirror chapter was awesome. Summary: Excellent beginner to mid-level book
This is an easy to read book with the detail you would expect from a pocket consultant. The author doesn't waste time with the basic chit-chat and does a good job of laying out the useful material.

Content includes initial setup, backup, performance monitoring/tuning and more advanced features such as registry and metabase settings. Advanced readers will eventually want to search for further information on some of these topics (scripting for example), but this is to be expected. The books leaves you feeling comfortable with what you've learned and with a good feel for where you might want to expand your learning in the future.

Most of my computer books end up getting re-sold or trashed, but I'll be keeping this one on the shelf for myself and others to use in the future.
Summary: Stanek bats a thousand again!
This book is really worth every penny it costs. It is packed with useful information, well written, intelligent, and enjoyable to read. Just the chapters on IIS applications, side by side .NET configurations, and pooling are worth the whole book: it goes through every detail.

The in-depth coverage of every other subject is as accurate as it gets. I particularly appreciated the chapter about customization. But the book goes as far as covering in perfectly understandable terms the metabase, and more. Not to mention the incredibly accurate chapter about optimization.
Summary: A Good One

One of the good books in the market about IIS 6.0.

People who are interested MUST have a look at

Summary: As good as they say
This is an excellent follow on book to "Microsoft Windows 2000 Scripting Guide," ISBN: 0735618674, which was my previous bible. I had long ago advanced past much of what is written in that excellent foundation book for VBScript, and this advanced volume really fills in the gaps. After purchasing numerous VB and VBA references that are nothing more than syntax libraries, I feel I finally have the big picture on the capabilities of this technology with this book. It is all clear.

Combined with the Windows Internals book, I don't think there is anything I couldn't do now that I had wanted to do with this technology previously. The chapters on scripting database connections and HTAs are worth the price alone. If you do any serious scripting work, this book is the true capstone. And who else could publish such a book than the horse's mouth itself?
Summary: Delivers what it promises
It never ceases to amaze me how many scripting books, including this one, start off telling you that you should already have intermediate to advanced scripting skills before you read, yet spend an initial chapter explaining what an array or an object is. It leaves me feeling that their definition of what "advanced" is will differ greatly from mine. I am also always a little dismayed when throughout, a book plugs a costly script development studio and spends time pointing out why your chosen script editor isn't good enough for your projects.

That said, Advanced VBScript delivers what it promises. It is written for intermediate to advanced scripters and has the primary goal of introducing scripting formats, utilities, objects and processes that might otherwise be overlooked. The beginning introduces you to the WSF XML format for scripts, why you would want to use it, and how to convert your existing scripts to this format. From there you are shown how to utilize scripts as COM objects, how to add an interface to your scripts via HTML and HTA applications, performing remote scripting, and expand your scripts ability using database, ADSI, WMI components. The last section focuses on working with Exchange 2003, MOM 2005 and Virtual Server 2005. At around 500 pages, the book is certainly not an exhaustive reference for each component examined. You are provided a good introduction and general instructions to the topic, given many recipe scripts for immediate inclusion in your environment, and then provided additional detail on where to go to focus on the topic.

The book is formatted to not only be a start to finish textbook, but also serve as an excellent reference guide for the introduced components later on. Although you may find similar scripting information scattered about other VBScript books, here you have a great deal of well presented topics that cover a broad spectrum of concepts. Inclusion of this title to your reference library will provide you the information you need while keeping your bookshelf compact.
Summary: Finally, a truly advanced scripting book for VBScript
Having worked with VBScript for a little over four years I am by no means an expert; however, I feel that my experience does give me somewhat of an advanced applied knowledge of scripting. I was pretty skeptical when I saw the word "Advanced" in the title, but this book laid all my concerns to rest in the early chapters.

The book begins with securing (including digital certs and policies) and encoding scripts as well as listing some nice techniques for implementing alternate credentials in WMI and ADSI. For me personally, the real meat and potatoes of the book was the copious information pertaining to working with WSF and WSC files. Don and Jeffrey take the time to detail the reasons behind XML functionality as well as it's application within the scripted files. These guys clear up a lot of questions on these two subjects and how to package your scripts using these technologies. They wrap up the package peice with explanations around HTA's and form controls in HTML scripts.

The book moves on to cover topics such as ADSI and ADO scripting, working with WshController and remote scripts, WMI and WQL classes and techniques, and different applicable real world examples. All this information is then wrapped up with tidbits of using scripting editors to debug, sign, and package your scripts as well the wizards (WMI, ADSI, WSF, etc) and other tools available to make scripting easier.

I've obtained quite a few VBScript books over the years and this one is by far the only one dedicated to truly advanced VBScripting. If you are new to scripting with VBScript, you might want to start with another book geared to learning the methods, properties, classes, etc of the syntax and the technologies it can use. While this book does offer great explanations on advanced topics, you really need to have a solid background in scripting before you read it.

Thumbs up! Highly recommended bang for the buck!

Summary: The Best
Windows XP Administrator's Pocket Consultant 2nd edition is a little over 500 pages (504 to be exact). It is well written, easy to understand, and the best I've found. My copy has so many dogears and highlights. This book is worth it and then some.
Summary: Not just for administrators
Out of 5 Windows XP Prof. books this is the one I use the most. This book is packed with useful information, well written, excellent details. By the way, contrary to many other publications that claim to be up-to-date with the latest software version, this book was REALLY written about Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Summary: Best of Breed
This book is very well written. Stanek does a great job of balancing the need to be consise and yet throurough. This one is definately worth it's cover price.
