Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: An interesting historical account Mountain Wolf Woman lived 1884-1960, a Winnebago Indian who lived most of her life in Wisconsin. The autobiography is interesting not especially because she was particularly extraordinory or important, just the opposite - she was a rather ordinary Indian woman, and her life experiences might be considered relatively representative of many Indian women. Her story covers some particularly interesting social events and changes in Indian and American society. She recounts moving to Nebraska after her family was forced off their land in the late 19th century, only to return later to their home in Wisconsin. She gives her perspective on Western society, and their attempts to assimilate the natives, what she likes and dislikes about Western culture, and what effect it has had on Native Americans. Her life also covers a period of rapid technological change, from horse to car to airplane. Her style is almost broken English, but that is easily forgiven considering she is not a native English speaker. Her account is humorous at times, candid, and refreshingly humble - a refreshing character trait common among natives but unfortunately not so common in the rest of American society. I read this not by choice, but as a requirement for a ethnic studies class, to get my degree. I'm glad I did. It's very interesting to get some views on life from outside the traditional Western school of thought. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Good myth but bad commentaries The Trickster myth is hilarious and it shows how myths can shape people's psyches. The commentaries are somewhat disappointing, though. You must have a big interest in the subject to enjoy this book. Summary: Coyote on the couch Although occasionally dry, the connection between myth and psych is touched on here - distinguishing this material from more conventional anthologies of Coyote/Trickster legends. I might suggest the more readable Joseph Campbell, and indeed there's a bit of a connection between the two writers, and Carl Jung. There's new material here, even if a little too intellectual for some. Some of the legends were new to me, and the valuable tidbits made it worth wading through. Jung's contribution is unique. In summary: It's a slower read, but worth the effort. Summary: Try to cut the essays a little slack The introduction and other essays in this book suffer greatly from 'primitive peoples' syndrome (it was written a few decades ago). Ignore this: the best part of the book is the middle, where a Winnebago trickster story plus a few others are included, supposedly in full. If you believe Radin's description of collecting the myths (got them from an informant, translated by two more informants and 'tidied up' by him), then they seem to be pretty much OK.. certainly nothing obvious has been left out, as self-mutilation, genitals, and jolly exploits with faeces are still in there. Draw your own conclusions. Summary: |

Summary: Fascinating life-story of a humble and compassionate serpent What is dangerous for some people can be sacred and useful for the others who can utilize that and we should respect those. Jay Fikes' book proved this true for me for peyote, a sacred cactus for Native Americans and pschedelic drug for others who do not know how to use it. Moreover, I was deeply impressed with the Native American character Reuben Snake. This brave, compassionate man inspired me about how to live in harmony with the nature, the world and all that dwell theron. He showed me that the obstacles are in our minds and if we overcome these there will be no obstacles at all. This book also helps many realize "Being Indian is being a human being and human beings deserve respect for what they believe, for their religions, cultures, etc." Jay Fikes had done a wonderful job by introducing this humble serpent to our lives.
