Summary: great way to learn compositing in general
This book is a great intoduction into the field of Digital Compositing in general. If you already know the basics of After Effects and want to learn how to see and handle live-action footage for visual effects, this is your ultimate guide. Mark Christiansen talks, of course, a lot about the After Effects application (e.g. how to optimize the interface and your personal workflow). But there are also chapters that cover more general topics like how to match a virtual 3D camera to a real film camera, the differences between lens blur and computer generated blur, how to see and recreate light and color situations in a shot, Greenscreen Keying, Rotoscoping, specifics about working with high dynamic range images like scanned film footage and so on. I've also read parts of the famous book "The Art and Science of Digital Compositing" by Ron Brinkman, which covers a lot of simmilar issues. While Brinkman goes into a lot more theoretical details but doesn't cover specific software solutions, Christiansen matches a perfect combination between general theorie and practical application. You learn how to see images - but also how to directly manipulate them in After Effects. But a lot of the knowledge that is shown in this book, could also be used when working with other compositing systems - so it's really worth reading if you already work with After Effects, even if you want to migrate to a different software one day.

Summary: This book is not for beginners
Before I purchased this book, I read the premier 2.0 classroom in a book and I love the book. It explains almost everything you need to know about using premier pro. So after reading premier pro classroom in a book I readily bought the AE 7 classroom in a book thinking that by reading this book I could gain a lot of knowledge as I did with premier pro. However, to my surprise it did not helped me a lot. Yes, it has tutorials for you to follow but it does not explain to you why you have to do this and why not to do this. It doesn't have any chapter about the features of AE 7 not like premier pro classroom in the book. The first chapter you will go directly to a tutorial it show you steps to follow however after finishing the tutorial you will not learn much so after reading chapter 9 I stopped reading because it just a waste of time to me as a beginner of AE. However, if you already using after effects and just upgrading to AE 7 then this book will help you because you already have an idea how AE works. If you are still a beginner, I suggest go to lynda.com and get the cd after effects 7 essential training. You won't regret you did.

Summary: A great beginning book
I have have AE Pro 6 on my editing pc for 2 years now. Using it for s few films i did. I found it very difficult to learn. Flash forward I upgrade to AE7 pro and love it! I got this book at the same time and its been my bible. Very easy to follow and great usable tutorials. I highly recommend this book for new AE users!

Summary: Very nice upgrade...highly recommended for beginners.
Sometimes, I think a lot of these books just slap a new cover on their publication and make minimal edits to the same recycled material. This book really does cover AE 7 in a complete way for beginners and beyond. I have been working in AE for a couple of years now and I also found it to be pretty handy for featuring the updates in AE7. IMHO, this is the best book of the series...I can think of at least 3 ways this book has changed my work habits. It is clear, logical and well laid out. The only way I wouldn't recommend it is to try to use it with older versions of AE...there really isn't much backward compatibility here. Emphasis is on how to use the newest features, especially the Adobe Bridge and the presets, which is why I recommend it to those who are just getting started in AE.

Antony Bolante in his book considered that the reader is beginner in After Effects. So, he describes each tiny part in an easy to understand way.

The first chapters in the book describe this great program, anatomy and tools. And shows you with examples how to use these tools.
For example, chapter 12 shows all about creating text and text animation. It starts with setting the workspace for text and goes through creating text, editing, formatting, setting text options and describes in details how to get the most out of text animation, starting with making the text follow a path, using text animation presets and creating animator groups.
The last chapter teaches you how to get your work out to the world by using different rendering techniques in After Effects.

I think this book is the best resource for beginner After Effect designers and animators, as it really gives you a big push toward the proficiency of Adobe after Effects.

Summary: absolutely useful and worthwhile
if motion graphics is your thing, this is a fantastic resource. Nobody more clearly explains the basic concepts of layering, nesting, timelines, footage, transformations, masks, precomposing, stencils, track mattes, transfer modes, keyframes, rendering, resolutions, plugins, working with audio, and much more.

The "Creating Motion Graphics with AE", and "After Effects in Production" must be considered the best of the best, even for those who may be using other products such as Apple Motion, or Combustion, etc.

Highly recommended, as is having plenty of time and some decent hardware.
The tutorials are a blast ! Go thru them all (this takes awhile folks) and you begin to get the idea....motion graphics is fun !!!

This is an excellent resource for After Effects. The "Meyers" Have always produced great learning materials and this is another proof positive of that.

Summary: "Professional" learning experience
After I bought after effects the software had little interest for me. I never new that broadcasting and such could be such fun. Did a lot of editing for animation studies with this tool. Looking forward to buy the next book when I'm finish with this. Recommended for advance users.

The After Effects Magic projects are varies from text, lighting and corporate logo animation techniques. I wished the book includes more projects and order them according to its level. But generally, the book is good choice as a practice resource that lets you easily digest many of the After Effects features.
