Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: Only the Basics We purchased the GoLive software because it promised to do "everything" we could possibly want for our business website ... we purchased the GoLive book because we needed help figuring out how to make this non-user-friendly software fufill its promises. The book only covers the simplest of web designs and does NOT go into detail regarding anything that we require. We were very disappointed. I would only recommend this book or software to those who want a very simple, very generic website. Summary: Good book for getting up to speed Since there are so few books on GoLive CS2, or any verions for that matter, I would say that right now this is the best book you can buy on the subject. No errors that I found and everything seems to be covered well. Summary: Adobe CS2 GoLive Classroom in a Book This is the best manual, yet. Much better than previous versions. It is error free. I found that all the misakes I made in learning the tool placement were my poor eyesight and understanding. All examples are to the point and you are given excellent opportunity on how to do work on your own. Like in extra credit. This is an essential book in learning GoLive. Take your time, do a chapter at a time. I would not be without it. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Essential tool to get started with GoLive One thing GoLive is not and that is intuitive. This book starts you off with a hands on approach and after a time it starts to make sense. I used it methodically and did not find any mistakes mentioned in the other reviews - it helps to use one's head and guess where one overlooked, or mis-understood an instruction as the program is very fiddly. Highly recommended. Summary: Overall, a good introduction to GoLive ***This review is for the Revised Edition*** (FYI, I use the Mac version) Firstly, I have completed the whole book and have NOT found it to filled with errors. There are a couple of areas (specifically I think it was 3) where I had to do a double take and make sure I was following the directions as I was supposed to. Some confusion comes in because the names of some of the palattes are very similar to the names of the work screens, so you need to pay attention if the directions say "Click on the navigation palatte" or "Click on the navigation screen." At a couple points in the tutorial, it got a bit confusing, however it was nothing I could not figure out with some careful reading. It is not a complete reference on GoLive, as I feel I just scratched the surface with the text so far. I would recomemend this book to others basically because there is no other text to learn from. However I would like a more complete exhaustive text that goes deeper into GoLive. One thing I do fault the book for is not having a brief chapter of summary actions like "To fix orphaned files...do the following.."and then list them. There is no summary page or chapter on commands, icons and what they mean. I find myself knowing what I want to do, however I have to look it up to find out detailed instructions on how to do it. Like I said, overall, not a bad book, especially because there isn't anything else out there. ***Update*** I downloaded the free 30 day version of Dreamweaver 8 from the Adobe website to try it for 30 days. I also bought the book "Dreamweaver 8 The Missing Manual" to take it for a test drive. I figured all I would be out of would be the cost of the book. I have only completed 3 chapters and I already like this program much better, and the text is excellent when compared with the text for GoLive. My advice: if you have to use GoLive, use this book and the GoLive Tips book and make the best of your situation. If you have a choice of which progam to use, download Dreamweaver 8 free for 30 days and get "Dreamweaver 8 The Missing Manual" and take it for a test drive. I have already decided to dump GoLive and go with Dreamweaver. Don't make it hard on yourself by sticking with GoLive if you don't have to. Mind you, I am not saying GoLive is a bad program, I am saying documentation is poor, and you will be further ahead by going with Dreamweaver and all the available texts you have access to. Summary: Tedious but worthwhile Just finished all 13 lessons and found it to be extremely worthwhile. I had previously watched the Total Training 'Essentials of GOLIVE CS' and as good as that was (I've started watching again with a new sense of confidence and understanding),there is nothing like actually working through the basic boring bits on my PC. I didn't find the amount of errors others have but I did at times have to read and reread sections to follow along exactly. Like others reviewing here I wonder why there are no really cool & comprehensive GOLIVE manuals. Regards Michael Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Now i want all my books to be like this One of the best books on software that i ever bought. I've been working with GoLive for quite a while now and just can't believe how many useful things i didn't know about it yet. So many shortcuts that enhance productivity, so many features that i paid too little attention to. Because of the way it's written - 200 tips, most of them on 1 or 2 pages - it's easy to pick it up at any time, read a minute, learn something valuable and put it down again. And you're almost sure to learn something new with every tip. Summary: good companion to a standard GoLive text Adobe offers GoLive as a powerful tool to build pages in a website. It is complicated enough that the authors of this book present 200 tips, to perform common and useful tasks. The contents pages show a titular summary of the tips. Given that GoLive is from Adobe, it's no surprise to see an emphasis on the visual presentation of the pages. Typical is a tip about writing links in PDF documents, or another tip about converting an HTML file, and any associated referenced images, into a single PDF document. Of course, there are also several tips involving Adobe's flagship Photoshop. Overall, the tips seem straightforward to understand and do. This appears to have been a deliberate choice by the authors. The book is most useful if you already have the basics of GoLive. A good companion to a standard text on GoLive. Summary: A Must Read for All GoLive Users I have been using GoLive since the Cyberstudio days, and this book STILL florred me on how much useful information it contained. Everything from the "Well duh! I can't believe I didn't know that" to the "WOW" tips are in here. Simple. Consolidated. Useful. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Highly recommended for all GoLive users I have been using GoLive for over six years and was blown away by how much new information I learned from reading this book. Though I consider myself a veteran GoLive user, I found literally dozens of new GoLive capabilities in this book that I can't wait to use. GoLive is a powerful and advanced Web development program. But because it is so packed with features, it is easy to miss many of the capabilities of the program. This book describes the important, but often overlooked features that you really should know about. These include designing with layers, using the Outline Editor, customizing syntax highlighting, saving commonly used colors, editing Smart Objects, and running site reports, just to name a few. There is also an entire section on using GoLive's CSS editor, which I found absolutely indispensable. What I like most about the book is that the authors don't just list the features and point out where they are in the program. They explain in detail why you may want to use them and how to incorporate them into your Web design projects. The book is organized by topic, so you can browse through the tips you think would be most helpful to you. Otherwise, the index makes it easy to look up information about features you may not be sure how to use. While this is a "Tips" book, it can definitely serve as a helpful learning reference as well. I really thought I had mastered GoLive before reading this book. But now that I know so much more about the program, I want to redesign all my websites more efficiently with the new knowledge I have. I can already tell that the time it took me to read this book will save me countless more hours in designing my next websites. I highly recommend it. Summary: Worthless rehash of online help I can't believe there are people with something good to say about this book. Probably friends of the author. I've been using GoLive CS2 for about 3 weeks now, and this book showed me nothing I didn't already know; that's how basic it is. His "tips" include wisdom such as "That's right, hover you cursor over many of the controls in the Adobe PDF Preset dialog for a helpful description of what the option affects." Wow! Oh, I did learn about some new features, like "Tip 7: Managing Palettes"; how you can "dock" a palette along the edge of the screen. Only it doesn't work. Probably works on a Mac. Apparently he never bothered to check the tips on a Windows machine (the book cover says "Covers GoLive CS2 fopr Windows and Macintosh"). Summary: Most Helpful Computer Book I've Ever Read I've have been using GoLive for many years, but after upgrading to CS2 I thought I might be missing something. This book really opened my eyes to all sorts of options and features I had never used before. This book is not an instruction manual for beginners, but it is the best collection of hints and tips I have ever purchased for ANY computer software. I design Web sites for a living, and this book was able to show me a few hints that have me saved many hours of work. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent step by step book Some items in the book may seem very basic but necessary if you want to learn GoLive the right way. For instance when linking - it really is a point and shoot system. I guess once you get the hang of it as the way the book describes the step by step procedure - you'll find similar attributes in MSVisio. This book may seem simple but necessary in its step by step procedure. Each chapter enumerates on each part of the creation of a professional html web page. I recommend this book if you want to learn how to use GoLive the right way, which will in-turn advance you to be more creative with your ideas. Summary: Lives Up to the Series Title This is my first venture into the CLIB series and my first venture into serious web designing tools. I needed help fast and I needed a self paced training that would keep me interested. This book comes through on both counts. What's more, it is doing it with style. The only thing missing from the classroom experience is interaction with the teacher. My background is hardware bashing, not code bashing or web development. I needed a tool to get a personal promotion site up and running. I looked at other tools like FrontPage, Macromedia's offering and even some HTML editors. I'd helped put some simple web pages together and realized I do not want to code pages. FrontPage was reasonably priced, but did not offer much in the way of flexibility. Macromedia was OK, but I was not at ease with their interface. I already own and use some Adobe products, so the interface seemed very familiar to me. This is not to say the interface is simple, and that's where the Class Room in a Book comes in. One suggestion: if you are a first time user of GoLive (GL), start with Lesson 2 or at least working part way through it. Lesson 2 provides an excellent introduction to the GL interface and structure. I found the supplied lesson materials matched the book perfectly, something I have not always found, and the exercises were not simple busy work, but true teaching exercises. I'm only part way through the book, but I feel I know enough that I've begun designing my own site. As I continue the lessons, I will be updating the site's design to incorporate what I'm learning. The next challenge will be learning LiveMotion from the CLIB for that application. I highly recommend GoLive 6.0 Classroom in a Book to all levels of users. You do not need an extensive hardware background to follow the book. You do need to be a fluid operator of your computer and you should have some understanding of what the Internet is to take advantage of the potential offered here. Summary: Help's You Get Past the GoLive Learning Curve FAST I am a BIG fan of the Adobe Classroom in a Book (CIB) series. I constantly recommend the books to folks who want to get up to speed on Adobe's software. So ... I come to this review slightly prejudiced. Just wanted to get that out of the way up front. The thing I like best about Adobe's CIB series is that it is truly a tutorial, not just a reference book. (Though you can use it as a reference quite easily.) If you will take a little time and do the lessons in the book in order, you'll learn all the basic (and some beyond) skills that you need. The included CD-ROM contains all the files you need to do the tutorials. I'm working through the GoLive 6 CIB myself. I've used GoLive since a pretty early edition, but it seems that Adobe changes the workings of GoLive considerably with each new edition and I have been neglecting my web sites for quite some time, so I've forgotten how some things work. Adobe GoLive 6.0 Classroom in a Book is exactly what I needed. There is a very logical, step-by-step progression to its organization. It covers the basics, and some very advanced features. From basic web page design, to floating boxes, animations, rollovers, cascading style sheets (one of my weak areas), drop down menus, javascript, and site management, it covers it thoroughly. If you are trying to learn GoLive in order to build yourself some web presence, this book will be a GREAT help. Just work through the tutorials, and you'll learn it. (It certainly beats paying hundreds or thousands of dollars for training.) Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: One of the best, more comprehensive CS2 workbooks on the market today Jennifer Alspach, Shari Nakno and Steve Samson's Adobe Creative Suite 2 Workflow is no light manual on CS2: it's for the active user who suspects there are more functions and features than meets the eye. From tips on how to use CS2 more effectively to determining which applications fit specific tasks and how to handle illustrator techniques, one big advantage here is a powerful visual approach which packs color screen shots, diagrams, and examples on each page. It's one of the best, more comprehensive CS2 workbooks on the market today and lends particularly well to seasoned users who wish to get more from the program. Summary: Wrong Title for Book If I had gone strictly with the title of the book, I might have not given this one 5 stars at all. It's not about creating workflows between Adobe applications and doing projects. More than that, this book is about experiences from the authors about how one can do small tasks more efficiently by using the CS2 applications together. Think of this as a book that's left next to your desk that you can pick up and read when you have 5 minutes to spare. That's the way this book will benefit. So if you think that the term "workflow' in the title means that you're going to do great things, then you got it all wrong. This book is about those little things that make great differences. Geetesh Bajaj/Indezine.com Summary: Practical recipes for real world problems This book presents a set of recipes for using the Adobe product suite. The recipes are well chosen and are described in a terse style that works for this type of content. My only gripe is that the examples could have been a little better. With books that cover products like Photoshop I like to not only learn the techniques, but be inspired by the example material in the book itself. And that's why I rate this book a 4 and not a 5. Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Has the basics but lacks some important points I bought this book because I was designing a web site for the very first time. I had some background knowledge of other Adobe products but had never used GoLive. The book does a good job of explaining the tools avaialble in the program but has little information about how to really use these tools to make your site look good. The pages he shows you how to make in the book are uninspiring at best. If you're looking to make a more visually appealing site that has a professional sort of quality, this book will not help you figure out how to do that. Also, as with most programs, you're not going to use a lot of the more advanced features so a good majority of the book, while useful as a reference perhaps, was not relevant for me. I ended up having to go online and read independent tutorials or ask friends to get the information I needed to learn how to use the tools to make my site visually appealing. Summary: Don't let the title fool U... This is a great book for anyone to get up to speed quickly on golive. Good beginners book and a great start for learning golive. Summary: Very helpful. Before I purchased Go Live 6 for Dummies, I was pretty comfortable doing my html the old fashioned way-- with PageMill. However, upgrading my Mac to OS X meant upgrading my software. This book is another fine For Dummies product. It was straight-forward enough for me (being familiar with html and the parent-application that spawned Go Live) to just read it through. Now I just use it as a reference tool. I don't think I have ever even opened the manual that came with the application. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: All hat and no cowboy Once again a Peachpit/Adobe Press book has convinced me that no one involved in the production of their books ever reads and goes through the book (either before or after it's printed) to either proofread it or otherwise look for errors. Nor do many of Peachpit's authors acknowledge there inevitably will be errors and setup and publicize a web page for the book's errata. Straub keeps up this fine Peachpit/Adobe Press tradition by not providing one either. This book is certainly not for anyone with experience with the individual apps in the Creative Suite but because of so many errors and omisions it's not for beginners either. Don't waste your money on this book unless you're buying it for the many nice illustrations! Summary: Excellent! This book is great! I just bought Adobe Creative Suite and, although I am familiar with Photoshop and graphics programs, I was a bit intimidated by all the new features. I didn't feel like buying the more expensive 'Classroom in a Book' for each application and went to look for a book which combined all programs in one instruction book. This book by Katrin Straub is just what I needed. She uses real world projects to show you what's possible with each of the programs in CS and how to integrate them. The layout and instructions are clear and easy to follow. The projects are about high quality design & very inspiring. Of course, this book does not replace the (online) manuals, but it does not pretend to. However, after using this book, I know what to look for in the manual. Katrin just handles each subject with enough depth to get you going, but not so much that you get bored with details which you do not need yet. I hope Katrin Straub will publish some more books! Summary: Lots of Gloss But No Substance This book is the weakest of the Adobe help books I've read so far. I feel it has some serious shortcomings. Let me put all this in perspective by giving you an idea of my Adobe skill set and what I was hoping to get from this book. I've worked extensively with Acrobat for about three years and Photoshop Elements (PSE) for almost as long. I've been through most of the Classroom in a Book for GoLive 6.0 and LiveMotion 2.0 Recently, I purchased Creative Suite Premium. Through the Classroom in a Book (CIB) for InDesign CS I've become fairly fluent with that program and I've transitioned from PSE to PhotoShop CS very nicely, but still consider myself a beginner with that program. I've had no trouble with GoLive CS and LiveMotion is not part of the Adobe Creative Suite lineup, so that's a moot point. I've had minimal exposure to Illustrator. I do have the CIB for all the major pieces of CS, except Acrobat, so what I'm lacking, I'll pickup at my own pace when I'm ready. What I was hoping for was a real nice way to tie all these applications together and have fun in the process. That's what the promo blurb promises. Sadly, the projects fall far short. The style of project reminds me of a kids' creative crafts book adapted for computer users. The book is also full of errors and omissions, beginning with the first chapter. In "An Overview" the author cites Creative Suite being available in two versions, Standard and Pro. The Standard designation is correct, but Adobe lists the other version as Premium, not pro. This may be minor, but it sets the tone for the rest of the book. Not enough validating of examples and checking for completeness of information. The first project is not fully presented. For the first lesson, you are to design a postcard. Using PhotoShop and Illustrator. Sadly, PhotoShop is drastically underutilized. The student uses it only to check the pixel count of a canned graphic. No image manipulation is performed. Too bad, as that is PhotoShop's forte. Even as a beginner, I could think of a lot more creative uses for PhotoShop. The Illustrator template is easy to use, but I feel the wrong tool was used here. InDesign could do this job simpler and is much more amenable to layout tasks which is what this exercise is reduced to. There is no guidance for using Illustrator to create any graphics. In fact, the student is left on their own to figure out how to properly insert and format text once you've positioned the canned graphic. Oh, yes, and to create your own text while your at it. There is no sample text included in the book. And so it goes through out the book. I did not expect total hand holding, but I was looking to make better use of this fine collection of tools. While it is much more expensive, I'd suggest buying the individual Classroom in a Book for each application. The lessons are more accurate, complete and provide a higher level of instruction than the Creative Suite Idea Kit. If there is a plus side to this book, it is the graphics. The illustrations Ms Straub uses are wonderful. I only wish we were let in on how she created them. If I could rate this fractionally, I'd give it two and a half stars. The book is written in a readable manner, but the content is not worth the reading. The illustrations add the extra half star. Clearly below average usefulness. Summary: |
