Summary: WOW is right
All I have to say is WOW. I love this book. I have been using Illustrator for quite a while and tend to be a book reader for learning. This book had a lot of little gems in it for some of the more hard to grasp concepts like gradient mesh or something as simple as reflecting easily. Some of the examples in here on the CD were stellar. This book really did enhance my overall knowledge of Illustrator and confirmed some things as well.
Summary: Amazing Book
I've been wanting this book for a while, and I finally decided to purchase it.

I was very impressed by the artwork throughout the entire book, inlcuding examples from professionals, every page is colored, and its so easily organized. Its a pretty thick book at around 430 pages of all full color (still amazes me at the price I got it for).

I've used several Adobe Illustrator Books, including:
Visual QuickStart Guide: Illustrator CS,
Adobe Illustrator 10/CS/CS2 Classroom in a Book,
Adobe Illustrator CS in 24 Hours,
and several others that I didn't completely read.

I know thats a lot of books but It took me a while to grasp the feel of Illustrator. I would say if you have used Illustrator for over 3 months and have a basic understanding of it then this is the perfect book to expand your creativity and give you a new outlook on devoloping vector graphics. It goes through a lot of the beginner guides, but it jumps right into getting you active and used to Adobe Illustrator with simple exercises and methods of creating things. I also like the included HotKey piece in the back of the book, good to hangup to get used to using keyboard/mouse only (not clicking tool items). The CD is also a big plus, if you want to get good at Illustrator this is the best book I would suggest.

This is, hands down, the best book I've ever purchased for the computer.
Summary: Great balance of expert techniques with the right amount of guidance
I really like the approach of this book; a great overview of expert techniques, presented with just the right amount of coaching and usage tips. The organization of the book is very nice, with an opening chapter with expert tips, followed by short sections highlighting the application of a particular technique to solve a problem. The layout is wonderful, easy and fun to read with lots of illustrations and examples. I highly recommend this book.

Summary: Best beginners supplement to product manual
Although I had a lot of experience with CAD programs, I struggled with Illustrator 8. I finally upgraded to v. 10 and bought Classroom In a Book for that version. You CAN teach yourself Illustrator with the manual and this book in a few weeks. ICIAB is a good supplement to the manual, which for reasons that always baffled me, has too few illustrations for information aimed at visually oriented people.

You will have to do some experimentation to get full benefit from the lessons, but I picked up things I was clueless on before. It does help to have some additional book such as Visual series (PeachPit Press) for details not covered.

Downside: some errors of tools or keys, nothing serious. But I was disappointed by two topics; the web chapter separately covers making a Flash animation for the web, and slicing a graphic for the web, but while the "finished" version of the lesson shows both in a complete web page, the lesson doesn't tell you how to put them together without the Adobe Web program (too expensive for me). You have put both html files in a text editor and combine them using the complete example for reference as to where to put the Flash file and what to include or leave out.

Also, the section in lesson 6 on data/variable objects is applied in a page of business cards, but doesn't explain how to get the data base and variable fields applied to all incidences of the biz cards on the sheet. I did figure it out for myself, but it took me about an hour of experiment, and is almost as tedious as just editing the file, though once the database is set up it would be quick to print out new cards with the variations.

But overall, a really good way to learn Illustrator to an intermediate level, and a whole lot cheaper than any class I've looked into (plus classes tend to be taught on MACs in my area).

Summary: Tutorial style book for creating illustrations, artwork, etc
After first determining why I needed Illustrator when I already had Photoshop, I picked up this book because of my positive experience with another book from this Classroom in a Book series (Photoshop 7.0). And this book does not disappoint in the least bit either.

It follows a tutorial style approach to teaching how to use Illustrator (both Mac and Windows versions). The book is mostly black and white with all the relevant color pictures tucked between lesson 12 and 13. It hasn't caused me any problems as I follow along on the computer as I read the book (I have a color monitor).

In 15 lessons, this book does an excellent job of teaching you how to use Illustrator 10 without having to be in a classroom. All lesson files are on the CD-ROM that comes with the book. The book starts off with explaining how to use the Work Area and builds from the basic to the more complex topics. The basic topics of creating shapes, painting, drawing, working with brushes are followed by the more difficult topics of transforming objects, working with type, blending shapes and colors, etc.

Even though the two programs Photoshop and Illustrator are coming closer with each new version, the main differences between them are to do with whether you want to start with an existing photo and modify it for print & web or you want to start from scratch and create illustrations and artwork for print & web. I am oversimplifying here but this explanation helps me keep the differences between these two programs straight in my head.

The technological differences are that Photoshop uses bitmaps to represent images and Illustrator uses vectors (and complex mathematical equations) to represent the images. Of course, you don't need to bother with this part as it is irrelevant to using the tools effectively.

I use both Photoshop and Illustrator for basic web design but mostly stay with Photoshop. The reason for this is that I am a photographer and have never been good at artwork so I use Illustrator mostly as a hobby to improve my creativity in this area. It has been a lot of fun for me and I hope the same for you! Have fun learning to use this amazing and cool tool! And don't forget to check out Adobe's website for their latest release of Adobe CS (Creative Suite) that includes the next version of Illustrator after Illustrator 10.

Summary: If you're going to criticize someone...
This book came highly recommended by an Illustrator 10 instuctor. It's an excellent resource for a very powerful software application. One doesn't need to be very technically oriented to get the most out of this book.

(Note to "A reader" from Hollywood, CA USA: You may benefit from the English course into which you suggested Chris Youngs enroll himself. I am confident that, if you do, you will learn that languages are always capitalized. Until then, perhaps you will realize that you do not possess perfect grammar skills either and your tacky comments should kept to yourself.)

Summary: This is a MUST HAVE reference on Illustrator CS2
When those of us who are experts in Illustrator run into a problem, Mordy Golding is often the person we go to for help. Now you too can turn to Mordy for help by keeping the Real Wolrd Adobe Illustrator CS2 book next to your computer.

As a teacher, consultant, author, and former Illustrator product manager, Mordy is uniquely qualified to write a "must have" reference book on Illustrator-- and that's what the Real Wolrd Adobe Illustrator CS2 book is-- a MUST HAVE REFERENCE BOOK.

This book is SO good, and his teaching style is so accessible for difficult features, that as author of The Adobe Illustrator CS2 WOW! Book, I asked Mordy to adapt a chapter of this book to include in the current edition of our book!

If you want a reference book that covers all the technical features of Illustrator -- the Real World Illustrator CS2 Book is for you!
Summary: Best graphics computer manual format I've encountered yet!
I just took Mordy's class at ADIM9 and got his book. I have to say it's the best book for my needs I've seen, and I am a very experienced consumer of graphics tech manuals. I'm only about 1/3 through it, but my skipping ahead makes me believe the rest of the book has the same format: if you need a step-by-step project based book, this may not be the book for you. But, if, however, you want a very complete, advanced overview that builds knowledge upon knowlege from-the-ground-up of how this works for the professional, this is the book for you. I've been using Illustrator professionally for about four years and I was getting by but not always knowing the quickest way to do things. This book will save me SO MUCH TIME! Thank you Mordy and PeachPit Press!
Summary: Great Book
This book is outstanding for anyone who wishes to learn Illustrator as part of the new Adobe Creative Suite 2! It is well organized and the explanations and handy tips are wonderful. Anyone who wants to learn Ilustrator will do well to buy this book and keep it around so they can refer to it to refresh their knowledge about the program.

Summary: From Zero to Hero
I bought this book because I have been using Photoshop for several years but have never even opened up Illustrator. This book is amazing. I read it with ease understanding pretty much everything the first time around. Even without a knowledge in Photoshop anyone who seeks an understanding of Illustrator MUST READ THIS BOOK. The author makes it so simple to understand and yet displays the powerful features and ease of use with simple yet informative excercises. His method is simple. Give a lesson, do an exercise. Teachers of all subjects should read this book for an understanding of how to teach.
Summary: Fantastic book for newbies
I've never used Illustrator before, my background is as a programmer for business applications, but now that I'm retired, I'm indulging my budding love for graphic design. I bought the whole CS2 bundle, LOVE IT, but of course it's very complicated, especially if you're just getting into graphic design. This book is a great place to start. This particular edition is MUCH cheaper than the deluxe edition, because all the graphics are reproduced in black & white. For me, the only chapter where that made a significant difference is, no surprise, the chapter on color, but I think that will be a subjective judgment you'll need to make for yourself. In addition to learning the basics of using Illustrator, the book also addresses some of the integration with the other programs in the suite, which I found to be very useful. Loved it!

Summary: Not as good as other HOT publications
I have used the HOT for Flash and for Dreamweaver and have learned a great deal from both of them. But the Illustrator CS publication is far inferior on many levels, I am afraid (I know that I am in the minority here). The communication and conveyance of information is many times unclear and unfocused and assumes a level of knowledge is already in existence. The structure of the lessons are many times confusing, as is the graphics associated with them. I luckily got mine from the library and did not pay for it. I would not spend the money on this one, and do the same. Or try it out for yourself and then spend the money. Good luck, and keep up the good work with the other HOT publications!
Summary: Tells you why, not just how
Jeff Van West has a winnner of an Illustrator tutorial. A lot of other how-to books give you a bunch of steps that lead the user to a "whiz-bang" result, but they lack in explaining why and how that result was achieved. This book goes through the process of explaining the cause and effect of Illustrator's tools and effects _before_ going through the steps, leading to a better understanding of when to use those tools and effects. I've used "Adobe Illustrator CS Hands-On Training" as a textbook in my beginning Illustrator class, and it's been a wonderful teaching tool. My only real complaint (and it's a minor one at that) is that the graphics are not all that pretty (graphic artists are attracted to shiny objects). Still, the book accomplishes what it sets out to do.
Summary: An excellent Illustrator Tutorial
This is an excellent training book. It is well-written, presents the material in logical order, and holds the reader's attention. Examples are clearly presented, step-by-step.

Summary: Excellent bible for the bumbling novice
First I need to give a nod to "Gunny", the reviewer who convinced me to purchase this book: Thank you! This is truly the best Illustrator guide available for beginners, who need to find their painful path through the inscrutable thicket of Illustrator, who need to get a graphic project done, quickly.

People like us (i.e. either not professional designers [me], or the few remaining troglodyte designers who've remained fanatically attached to their bristling forest of Berol markers) don't have time to flirt with the dreamy practice projects that other manuals propose; we need to punch out the goods quickly -- usually just some "simple" graphics (well, they LOOK simple, but we all know they're really not so). So we need to know the basics, need to know how to alter a shape, eliminate extraneous background junk, whatever. And this book, with its extensive index and it's clear, step-by-step instructions, does just that.

No, this doesn't have any projects, and there are lovely pictures in the middle of the book that one assumes were done with CS2 but which don't serve any other purpose than as examples of what one COULD do, once one figures out how to maze oneself through the thicket. So "matt the artist" reviewer has a point there. (But his referring to "Illustrator help" -- jeesh! I defy anyone who's ever clicked on that Help menu to find me a phrase in the English language that's more oxymoronic than "Illustrator Help.")

This book stays next to my computer, and although I've owned it only a coupla weeks, it's already looking a tad weary & worn. Worth every penny.
Summary: Excellent, As Usual
Visual Quick Start Guides and I were introduced in college. Each one I have used is: supremely instructive, light to nonexistent on self absorbed asides (a blessed relief), and meaty...very meaty. The paper isn't glossy, the images aren't in color, you get no adorable photos of the author with their children frolicking on the sands of Southern California. But you get information about how to use Adobe products (and anything else you want to tackle) so that you, in your miserable Midwestern hovel, far from the smiling shores of the Pacific rim, can accomplish your tasks for your demanding and sniffy clients and get paid, and not go to the poor house! Tres cool, no?

Every tool is explored to the max, all the possible options are explained clearly, new things about the program are patiently explained. By the time you get through with this book, you Know Illustrator. You don't have to read it cover to cover, but you can dive in anywhere to have a new item explained to you, and be on your way.

I have found Visual Quick Start Guides far clearer than Dummies, and much more useful than any cookbook guides. I recommend them way over the more expensive Classroom in a Book. They are also reasonably priced, and though they don't catch your eye or come with the CD rom (which you don't really need), or show you a bunch of high concept work,; they are your reference and you will keep them snuggled by you as you plow through tough creativity and succeed.

!Viva Visual Quick Start Guides!
Summary: Complete Reference
This is a reference book, and a very good one. If you're looking for a tutorial-based book, try the HOT series by Lynda Weinman and quit your griping.

Summary: an excellent tutorial for intermediate Illustrator users
I had some Illustrator experience before picking up this book, which is important: this gives you the basics and tells you what to do when you're beyond the basic level. The author doesn't just tell you what to do, but WHY to do it. The book is full of lesson plans covering a broad scope of Illustrator functionality, for example how to use the "divide" command to create nice abstract graphics effects. Similarly, I never really had a good grasp of the usefulness of blends and gradient meshes before completing the lessons. I also got a taste of functions that I don't often use, such as custom brushes and 3D effects. I might not use them more often in the future, but if I ever need them, it's nice to know they exist.
Summary: VERY NEW to Illustrator .......but not anymore!
I LOVE this book. I got this one as a gift in pdf format & ended up buying CS2 hardcopy one.
I really love the work by Yukio Miyamoto that is included in book.
Just including his illustration of his niece in book, helped me learn to create amazing things with the mesh tool! I was able to see his mesh lines & practice recreating the illustration. I went from a complete novice to actually being able to create complicated illustrations that look real.....I really can't understand how the poster above (the quick learning, Photoshop certified one) could not find this book useful...I'm NOT that quick of a learner & got tremendous use out of this book! It's exactly what I wanted because they have enough "For Dummies" type books if you just want to learn the program....BUT if you want to create ART,,Then look at this!
CS2 Wow is basically the same but I love it still.
It has lots of good info but I'd still love more on gradient meshes because there aren't enough people writing things on Illustrator :(
Summary: Illustrator is NOT Photoshop...
This book (and it's many previous editions... which are less expensive, and nearly identical, except for adding "CS" to the title)... are a good way to learn some fundamental AI techniques. Don't let the negative rant by the Photoshop enthusiast (preceeding this post) totally turn you off to the book.

I'm an Art Director and designer, who also comes to Adobe Illustrator from Adobe Photoshop. I've used Photoshop just about every day for 10 years. And for the record, I was a member of NAPP too, until I learned about all I could after 4 or 5 years (it's really just a magazine subscription). Anyway. If you're coming to Adobe Illustrator from Photoshop, as many of us do... here's what you ought to know:

Illustrator books are not as "cool" as Photoshop books. There aren't nearly as many people writing them... there aren't nearly as many people reading them. The average guy or gal on the street will never have to use a vector based illustration program. So keep in mind the Illustrator Software, and most books which cover it, are intended for a small group of dedicated professionals. Not like Photoshop books which are written to a huge audience (anyone with a digital camera).

We have been, perhaps, so spoiled by an abundance of truly outstanding Photoshop books (and magazines... and videos... and training software... and club-memberships... hello NAPP) that our expectations are bound to fail us, when it comes to learning other software.

All things considered... this book is the closest thing I've found to helpful instruction and eye-opening techniques for beginning and intermediate Illustrator users (I've got 5 or 6 Illustrator books lying around). Where it really excels is in its use of beautiful, full-color illustrations. That said... it's no Photoshop book... it doesn't spoon-feed you the techniques... but I really feel that's because Illustrator is simply a much harder program to learn. This book is good, for what it is. I'd rate it 3.5 stars... but 4 will have to do.
