Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Good, but could be better This was the first book I used (the CS version) when I started learning Photoshop a few years ago. While it was helpful, the book is divided into specific lessons, with little time spent on how Photoshop's tools work together or in what sequence they should be used. The lesson on masking, for instance, shows you how to create and work with a mask, but spends almost no time discussing the logic behind masks or or how they make your photo-editing tasks easier. I guess what is missing is a "holistic" feel to the book. When I finished, I certainly had a better knowledge of some of Photoshop's features, but the knowledge was disjointed. The next book I read, and one which every Photoshop user should have, is Katrin Eismann's "Photoshop Restoration & Retouching." It is the best book I've seen on Photoshop, whether for the beginner or an advanced user. I won't review that book here -- you can look it up on Amazon. I use Photoshop now at my job and as a hobby, and credit Eismann's book with most of my Photoshop knowledge and confidence. The Classroon in a Book is helpful, but once you finish it and begin using Photoshop, you probably won't ever look at it again (I haven't). Eismann's book, however, continues to be an essential reference and guide for me. Summary: "How to" is nice, but "Why" is better This is well intended, and mostly well achieved title. That is, it serves a good introduction to the interface and application in general terms. But it falls far short of deeply teaching the application. Yes, a user will have completed many exercises, and will have had many "successes", building confidence along the way. All good things. Additionally, one learns the vocabulary of Photoshop, the locations of tools and palettes, and something about the program's settings. But sadly, as a teacher, I see little deep understanding of how to use the application from those who rely solely on this text. And although knowing where things are and what they're called are important steps to passing the Adobe Certified Expert exam, it's more important to know how to achieve results in efficient ways that only real understanding--and much practice--can produce. I was fortunate to help create that exam for the last several versions of Photoshop, and I believe it tests how an adept user actually uses the program. One should be proud to pass that test! This book will get you started, perhaps, but it won't make anyone adept or expert. Try turning to Real World Photoshop CS2 (Fraser and Blatner) or Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers (Martin Evening) for that. Classes don't hurt either, but I'm biased there. But mostly, joyful, frequent, and curious use will make one an expert. Summary: More Fluff Then Substance This book covers most of the features in a very hit and run style. Each lesson tells you what to click on, but rarely why, and even then, only on some of the options. Several of the options in Photoshop have sub-options that are not covered in the book. I expected to have to do some experimentation, but not nearly to the degree that I have had to with a product published by Adobe. Any book with "Classroom" in the title should teach most, if not all, of the functions, not sell a few of the "tada" features of a program. As well, the table of contents and index are lacking as a reference tool. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Perfect for getting specific jobs done This book isn't a great general overview of Photoshops capabilities or a theoretical explantion to understand the underpinings of the program. I've bought books like that and still not known what is the best way to convert a color photo to black and white. This book provides an extensive list of real-world issues that photographers have to deal with using Photoshop and step-by-step ways to deal with those problems. It is perfect for those of you who want practical, usable advice to change and improve digital images using this extremely powerful, complex program and don't need to understand Photoshop theory. Summary: Photoshop reference manual I found this book to be a great "Go To" book while working in Photoshop. I have not tried to read it from cover to cover. Summary: Learn From the Master and Enjoy The Journey Wow! Now I know for sure, that I can be a successful digital photographer and enjoy the journey along the way, because the way has been paved with this book!!! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent Book for Intermediate Photoshop Users "The Photoshop Channels Book" continues Scott Kelby's well-established tradition of creating Photoshop instructional books that are concise, written in a lively and humorous style, and take the reader right to the heart of processes. This time he delves into the potential applications of Photoshop's "mysterious" channels panel, something that most people rarely use. While other books touch lightly on the subject Kelby devotes an entire volume to its functionality, and deservedly so. The book is very well designed in a 1950's/1960's TV-channel metaphor, richly illustrated and very easy to follow. Nearly anyone can get something new from it in ten minutes or less. It's a superb work that should have a long shelf-life as Photoshop continues to evolve. Summary: Great book In response the previous reviewer who hated it, yes I'm a beginner and thanks to Mr. Kelby I'm finally getting it. Who says that Photoshop's advanced techniques should be for the Selected few. The guy knows how to teach. Makes complicated concepts seem easy. The book is very organized and easy to read. On the downside: He is using a lot of filler addressing some topics that few of us will need. Summary: Info is great.... The information in the book is really great. My problem with the book is that the author goes WAY overboard on "cutesy". His cutesy style of writing often made it hard to focus on content. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Masking and Compositing Made Easy Eismann again has produce an authorative, well written, easy to use book on CS2. The best I have found. Summary: AWESOME, AWESOME. AWESOME This book is awesome. I have learned so much from this book and will keep it handy for a reference book. It is worth buying. I could not recommend this book enough. I will purchase her other book now. I can sum it up in three words--BUY, BUY, BUY. You wont be sorry. You will need to know the basics of photoshop first and then this book will put you above and beyond your expectations. Summary: Enlightening to an intermediate user of Photoshop! I am truly impressed with the author's ability to educate and enlighten me in an area that I thought I had understood pretty well. She does so in a matter of fact, step by step approach. If you are confused by the channels pallete in Photoshop, or if you want to learn how to make excellent selections for making layered collages, this is the book for you. I have been using Photoshop for over 3 years now, and I am glad I waited to purchase this book. It assumes you have a good general knowledge of how Photoshop works. If you don't have that experience look for Ben Long's book Titled Studio Techniques. I highly recommend this book for intermediate users of Photoshop. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: All illustrations are Black & White ! I have just received my copy. I have not read it yet, just looked at it casually and to my horror I found that all illustrations are Black & White except for a few pages in the middle as in dictionaries published 40 years ago when color was too expensive. Shame to Adobe. How can anyone appreciate Photoshop capabilities? This fact is not clearly mentioned in the book description and is barely understood from the contents of another review. Summary: Brilliant This was a great purchase and has helped me a lot since i purchased it. Summary: A powerful tutorial for a powerful program The Adobe Creative Team consistently produces the most powerful tutorials for Adobe products, and their manual for Adobe Photoshop CS is no exception. They are always well organized with clearly explained, excellent, and practical excercises. As a professional Photoshop trainer, I still rely on these manuals to bring me up to date on the newest features in new releases of the software. The learning experience is greatly enhanced by working through actual excercises and provides an understanding of how and when features can be used for a personal creative approach. A word of warning-Photoshop is an extremely powerful program and both the software and the manual can be extremely overwhelming for those who have had little experience with computer graphics. Anyone wanting or needing to use Photoshop, but finding the self teaching approach daunting, I highly recommend some type of classroom training. But even in this setting Adobe Photoshop CS Classroom in a Book will provide an excellent source for the practical application of the program. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Very Good Book -- Beginner's Perspective I knew nothing about Photoshop when I purchased this book. I found the DVD-book combo to be quite helpful. The book can be used as a series of lessons done sequentially or you can use it to find techniques to solve particular problems, so it makes both a good coursebook and a good reference book. The one thing missing in the book for me as a beginner has been commented on by others, and that is the "do this then do this" approach to achieve a result. An example is enhancing photos through levels where you are told to make particular changes. After it is over you are told that you figure out how to make the best changes by moving and nudging levels until the image is optimal. A better approach would be having the reader make the less than ideal changes and having Deke point out what is "wrong" with the result. For a beginner, one of the challenges of Photoshop is learning not just how to use the program but learning how to see the changes, or learning to develop a "Photoshop eye." This is mostly what is lacking in the book. However, there are places where this issue is addressed, including the section on the burn and dodge tools. Overall I am very pleased with this book and found it to be well worth the money spent. In addition to getting across the basics, it has made using Photoshop enough fun that I am now experimenting with more artistic rather than utilitarian techniques. Summary: complaint After ordering and receiving the book ,Iwas somewhat displeased with the fact that I had to go out and buy DVD drive in order to use the DVD that was included as part of the study process. It would seem to me that I should been notified of this before I ordered the book. I now have the book, the DVD ,and no place to go unless I buy a DVD drive for from 60-200.00. I don't think that my comments are unreasonable.Do you? LarryH Summary: Adobe Photoshop CS2 One-on-One Book Review Title: Photoshop CS2 One-On-One Review Author: Deke McClelland Publisher: O'Reilly ISBN: 0596100965 Pages: 475 Reviewer: Michelle LaRock Rating: 5 out of 5 stars Holding an aversion to any type of user manual as indecipherable and confusing, I have found "Adobe Photoshop CS2 One-on-One" by Deke McClelland to be an extremely user friendly and interesting way to learn more about my favorite program Photoshop. The books is arranged into 12 logically ordered lessons, allowing the more experienced user to skip what it not needed and to hop ahead to new things to learn. I found this a wonderful way of setting the lessons up and I resent working through training books only to find that I could have written the lesson rather than taken the lesson. Consequently, this book is great for users at all skills levels The easy to use enclosed CD makes the lessons vibrant and interesting. The sidebar, "Pearls of Wisdom" are excellent allowing the reader to pick up those pro tips we all wish we had someone around to explain and teach. Of course, you won't learn all you need to know about Photoshop in this book or any other, but the hands-on experience available in this book is just what I needed to learn. I've never been able to read a manual and figure out a program. Hands-on is the way to go for me so I found this book particularly helpful. Perhaps those who learn by reading (as some of my colleagues do), will find this book frustrating, but it was just the ticket for me! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Restoration and Retouching At It's Best One of the best, most definitive and authorative books on the subject I have ever found. Well written, well indexed, wonderful examples. Summary: Best book in my collection After many books I've finally found the holy grail of Photoshop retouching. No need to bore you with the details, if you want to repair photos or enhance them in any way, you need this one. Summary: Excellent choice for anyone wanting to enhance and preserve images. Almost everyone in the world has a digital camera now and lots of photos--not all of which are perfect, no matter how hard you tried to when you took the photo. Then there are those boxes and boxes of old photos, loose or in albums that constitute our family histories. Old photos fade, get scratched, bent and generally lose quality over time. This book is for those who want to preserve and enhance those photos. The book is also a tutorial for users of Photoshop, beginning with a section called Photoshop Essentials. In this section, the author reviews Photoshop tools, keyboard shortcuts, how to navigate and use Photoshop efficiently, with the focus on the tools needed for restoration and retouching. It is not a primer for Photoshop. My Photoshop skills are not very high level and this section was a great help. Not only does the author show you how to use Photoshop, but she also discusses how to set up your work area, what kind of lighting you should have, the workflow, equipment needed, with tips on how to proceed in a manner that allows you (or someone else) to come back and know what you have done. One of the things that impressed me when I first glanced through the book is the large number of photos used to illustrate the principles being explained. In addition, the explanations not only focus on the mechanics, but also on the reasons for making the needed changes. Learning the principles behind the changes will help you assess what needs to be done to your own photos. The book is organized so that each section is almost independent of the other sections--at least once you have some basics down. This makes it possible to focus on areas that are of more interest to you or necessary for the work you want to do. This is especially true if you are already very familiar with Photoshop and able to identify the problems that need solving in your photos. If you are not familiar with Photoshop, your time would be well spent to work through the exercises. I find that I can read about stuff forever, but when I actually use my hands and my brain together, I retain more information. You will be able better to identify what needs to be improved in your own photos by reviewing the samples and making the corrections. I highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to seriously undertake the preservation of photographs that are important for whatever reason--family history or historical significance or just to create better photos. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Very useful book I had a good working knowledge of Photoshop before reading this book. I'm only halfway through, and I'm learning a lot of very practical tips that I will be able to apply to editing my portrait photographs. I only gave it a four because the order seems odd to me. The introduction to layers is several hundred pages into the book, I thought that didn't make sense. Summary: Poorly Organized and Hard to Follow Superficially Evening's book appears to be all that anybody would ever need about Photoshop CS2. In fact, it is an impossible introduction for people making the jump from a simpler program, say Elements 3.0. The organizational structure is poor. Many ideas are used before they are explained, a fatal flaw as a text, tho' excusable in a pure reference volume. But "For Photographers" claims to be a text and not a reference. Terms are slipped in for somewhere without adequate definitions. And neither the table of contents nor the index are detailed enough to help somebody find most detailed topics. I bought Scott Kelby's book after putting Evening's on the shelf, probably for good. Kelby gives the info a photographer making the jump to CS2 requires, although his language is famously just a bit to glib. Summary: Wonderful introduction to the new version I have some experience with Photoshop - but I'm hardly an expert. I bought this book when upgrading from CS to CS2. I found it to clearly and concisely cover all the basic tasks that you would want to do, such as color correction (with any of several different techniques), sharpening, cropping and so on. It's the best book I've read on the topic (I have five in my library). Summary: |
