Summary: Very useful reference
Entries on just about everything, this book has been a very important reference for various philosophy classes.
Summary: A useful reference work.
As a classicist/medievalist I have found this book to be very useful as a reference work while working on my own areas of study (intellectual life in late antiquity and the high middle ages). I suspect that other people working in different philosophical fields would find this work just as useful, as this edition covers a wide variety of philosophers from vastly different times and places. As someone who is generally interested in philosophy and the history of ideas, I often enjoy browsing the sections on individual modern, postmodern and Asian philosophers, and so I have found this book to be helpful in expanding my own intellectual horizons. Anyone else seriously interested in ideas and/or their academic study will also find this volume both interesting and rewarding.

Summary: A few comments
Maybe it's just me, but I think that over the last 30 years there's been a dramatic improvement in the quality of short reference works in philosophy since I first studied it way back then. I had several of the classic one-volume books in the past, including some that are out of print now, such as Dagobert Runes's brief Dictionary of Philosophy (which wasn't exactly a "classic," but anyway, it was an enjoyable brief exposition nevertheless), but I think the ones that are available now are much better.

This book is certainly an example of that trend, considered by some to be the best in the field, and for good reason. The current edition sports a team of 440 contributors, with 400 new entries, including 50 on important contemporary philosophers. It also claims to have more entries on non- Western and non-European philosophy than an other comparable volume, including Arabic, Islamic, Japanese, Jewish, Korean, Latin American, and even African. I can't vouchsafe all of those claims, but certainly the coverage of Arabic and Islamic subjects is much more extensive than was the case in such reference works in the past. Another thing I liked is the coverage of modern logicians such as Quine and also philosophers of science, which was my main area of interest, is especially strong.

The entries range in length from a brief paragraph to an entire column (the pages are printed in two-column format), to several pages for important philosophers or key ideas in the history of philosophy. This book will appeal mostly to serious students and professionals seeking a brief refresher or discussion of whatever topic they're looking for, but the writing is often livelier than one might expect for a philosophy tome. Some, such as the one for Emerson, are as readable and enjoyable as anything I've ever read in the field, competing with Hector Hawkins's wonderful little book, Philosophy for Pleasure, a little gem of an introductory classic from the 50s that is now long out of print. All in all this is a great reference work and sourcebook for anyone interested in the subject of philosophy.

Summary: A history of Progress through danger. Great book, buy it !!!
The book "A History of Progress: Chronicle of the Audi Ag" by Audi Ag is fascinating and more educational then any government school.

In 1932, Audi, Horch, Wanderer and DKW combined to form the Auto Union (AU). They adopted four rings as their logo, one for each of the founder companies. All four companies were based in Saxony, and together they could cover the whole motor-vehicle market from motorbikes to luxury cars. Audi concentrated on the sports side, Horch on producing luxury vehicles, Wanderer (whose auto division had been bought in a hostile take over) on small to medium cars, and DKW on small cars. DKW was the main brand, producing around 80% of the conglomerate's cars, and only narrowly being beaten by VW (Volkswagen) to producing Hitler's 'people's car'. The acronym "DKW" originated from "Dampf Kraft Wagen" (steam-driven wagon).

This 4-circle badge was used, originally, only on Auto Union racing cars in that period while the member companies used their own names and emblems.

The National Socialist German Workers' Party began in 1920, and achieved electoral breakthroughs in 1930, and dictatorship in 1933.

The leader of the National Socialist German Workers' Party had determined to make German automobiles into world leaders, in order to promote his socialism. Hitler regarded racing as an integral part of this, and consequently 500,000 Reichmarks in government subsidies were pledged to make Mercedes the leading race team in the world - Hitler was a fan of Mercedes. AU sent a senior delegation to Hitler and persuaded him that having two competing racing programs would be better than one. He agreed to split the government money between Mercedes and AU. Although AU earned themselves the enmity of Mercedes, an enemy they could never hope to match in terms of size, they also won themselves an opportunity to make their name in the racing world.

Audi still uses the German tag line "Vorsprung durch Technik." The tag line is used either in original or in its English translation "Advantage through Technology." It is an odd reminder of socialist clichés from the 1930's such as "Kraft durch Freude" ("Strength through Joy" and "Kdf"); Schönheit der Arbeit ("Beauty of Labor"); "Arbeit macht frei" ("Work brings Freedom"). The "Strength through Joy" program was part of a scheme to provide holidays to workers at inexpensive rates, and was related to the "Beauty of Labor" office. When the early VW versions were introduced, Hitler abruptly changed the name of the car to KdF Wagen. The word "Volkswagen" itself meant "people's car" (cf. "folk's wagon"). Near the end of World War II many men, both young and old, were called upon to serve in the "People's Army " (Volksturm). The book could use more information about the "bad" side of the story in Germany.

Those clichés led to the socialist Wholecaust (of which the Holocaust was a part): 62 million slaughtered under the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; 35 million under the Peoples' Republic of China; 21 million under the National Socialist German Workers' Party. It was the worst slaughter in human history.

The Volkswagen and the Audi logo expose the swastika as intertwined "S" shapes symbolizing "Socialism" for the monstrous National Socialist German Workers' Party. The German word for "swastika" is "Hakenkreuz" ("hooked cross" or "armed cross"). Audi is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The company is headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany.

Germany in the 1930's often used symbols for letters and words. Common symbols under the National Socialist German Workers' Party often used the "S" shape, including the side-by-side use in the "SS" Division and the overlapping use in the Hakenkreuz - swastika.

Hitler was aware of the practice, and perhaps the source of the practice, in that he evolved "Adolf Hitler" into "S Hitler" in his own signature. It was a manner of declaring his socialism every time he signed his name and it was equivalent to signing "Socialist Hitler."

It is part of growing evidence that supports the discovery by the historian Rex Curry (in the book "Swastika Secrets") that the Hakenkreuz, although an ancient symbol, was used also to represent "S" shapes for "Socialism" and its victory under the horrid National Socialists.

The name of the car company, "Audi," is obviously related to the word "Audio" and is also related to the Spanish word "Oye" as in Carlos Santana's hit song "Oye Como Va" (Listen how it goes) and is related to the call of the bailiff in the United States Supreme Court "Oyez! Oyez!" ("Hear ye! Hear ye!")

Where the old Audi A6 had an intelligent expression underscored by a smiley lower air intake, the new grille (which echoes the Auto Union racers under National Socialism) has been described as "....a Rottweiler of a thing. With its battering-ram snout, chrome fangs and suspicious eyes, it's just itching for you to spill its pint and make you pay the consequences."

This is a great book about history and the Audi car.
Summary: Interesting Book on the history of the company.
Really goes in depth on the history of the company from day one on a year-by-year basis. Very interesting read... great coffee book for any Audi Owner.
Summary: Master of The Four Rings
As the title indicates, this book focuses on the history of Audi. And what a history it is. I have read much poorer tries to explain the difficult amalgamation of The Four Rings than this one, actually the authors do a very good job in explaining the complex story. With an elegant twist they have separated the actual progress from the different car-models that have been released over the years, thus making history clearer.

The strongest side of this book is the accurate, detailed information in every chapter, with a lot of nice footage. Especially the post-war story is impressive in every sense.

On the other hand, as this book is written inhouse at Audi AG in Germany, almost every sign of critisism is wiped out of the book, except where it cannot hurt to mention the flaws anymore.

The last star in my rating will be given when Audi adds color-photos to the book! There is also one other point I would like to mention, though it's a bit on the side: In the next issue, please use the German names for the different companies mentioned in the book!

All in all, A History of Progress : Chronicle of the Audi Ag is the best book I have read on the matter. This book is well worth the money for all lovers of Audi, except for those only interested in the last two or three decades.

Summary: Excellent Anthology of Epistemology and Its History
Huemer's anthology is intended to complement Robert Audi's introduction to the epistemology in the Routledge Contemporary Introductions to Philosophy series. And, as one would expect, it is an ideal text to be read in conjunction with Audi's book. Almost all the subjects discussed in that book--the exceptions being moral and religious knowledge--are given corresponding sections in this anthology. Nevertheless, I see no reason why this book needs to be used in conjunction with the other book. It is a perfectly fine selection of readings for a person who wants a picture of some of the main areas of debate in epistemology. For those who may be coming to the book without the background provided by reading Audi's introductory text, Huemer provides a short introduction to the subject matter of each chapter. And it seems he has chosen historical selections that help the reader to understand the nature of the problems being discussed in each of the sections and why someone might think those problems are important ones.

A signal virtue of this book is that it is helpful in introducing both contemporary and historical work in epistemology. Is it somewhat paradoxical that almost half of a volume in a series called Routledge Contemporary Readings in Philosophy should consist of historical papers? Somewhat so, perhaps, but it isn't all that surprising in a philosophy text. For, as any student of philosophy can tell you, the history of philosophy isn't just history; it's also crucial for understanding the nature of the problems with which philosophers are dealing and the possible solutions that can be offered in response to those problems. And this volume is quite good at introducing the history of philosophical thought about the nature, structure, and varieties of human knowledge. Its coverage of the history of the subject in modern philosophy is especially good, as it includes several selections from Hume and from Reid, along with selections from Locke, Berkeley, Kant. It also provides the reader with a introduction to the history of epistemological thought in the twentieth century, as it includes work by important figures from the earlier part of the century--Russell, Moore, and Ayer--and work by important mid-century figures, like Quine, Austin, and Goodman. Huemer also throws in a few selections from the ancients.

Though this volume is not edited by the author of the Routledge Contemporary Introductions to Philosophy, it is intended as a companion volume to that book. It takes its form Audi's introduction, in that it shifts the usual focus in introducing epistemology to the beginning student of the subject. Instead of beginning with skeptical challenges and with general issues about the nature and structure of knowledge, this volume, like Audi's introduction, begins by focusing on more particular forms of knowledge and the ways in which we can acquire them. Huemer has included sections on each of the following types of knowledge: knowledge acquired through perception, through memory, through the testimony of others, through reason (i.e. and a priori knowledge), and through inductive inferences. Most of the historical material is in these sections of the anthology--but all of these sections include at least a couple papers by contemporary figures as well.

The latter half of the volume concerns the general issues about the nature and structure of knowledge on which contemporary epistemologists tend to focus their research. Here the discussion is on the usual topics: foundationalism vs. coherentism, skepticism, the analysis of knowledge. These sections tend to include more readings than the sections discussed above, and thus, even though only half the anthology is concerned with these general issues, it still provides an excellent introduction to them. The reader should note that there isn't any separate section on internalist vs. externalist accounts of knowledge, though this topic comes up in both the section on skepticism and the section on the analysis of knowledge.

This is a very good anthology, and it's especially good for the price. It covers quite a bit of material, and it covers it quite well. The only possible problem one might have with this anthology is that its coverage of contemporary epistemology isn't as extensive as it might have been. But, importantly, it is intended as an introduction to work in both contemporary and historical epistemology rather than as an exhaustive survey of the subject. (For a more in-depth anthology in contemporary epistemology, check out the Epistemology volume edited by Sosa and Kim and published in Blackwell's Philosophy Anthologies series.)

I'd recommend this anthology for classes aimed at undergraduate students and for anyone with some philosophical background who's interested in epistemology.

Summary: Spinach
The words 'rigorous' and 'comprehensive' best describe Robert Audi's introduction to the theory of knowledge. Without the navel-gazing that characterize many philosophical introductions, Audi adheres to the meat and potatoes of the subject matter. Audi makes many well-justified and useful distinctions using a cold, serious writing style. Everything is dry; everything is documented. Moreover, this is one of the few introductory books I know of that map the entire terrain. After reading Audi's introduction, the reader should be able investigate any topic in the epistemological literature without feelings unfamiliarity. As professor Audi states in the first preface, "this book is mainly concerned to introduce the _field_ of epistemology rather than the _literature_ of epistemology."

The exhausting process begins with a lot of digging and the movement of heavy bricks. After all, the first five chapters are about sources and foundations. The first chapter on perception untangles many concepts before discussion of several views of it -- representative realism, adverbial theories, phenomenalism, et cetera. The following chapter on memory is structured very much like the chapter on perception. The third chapter, 'Consciousness', discusses many notions such as objects of introspective consciousness and privileged access. 'Reason', a very important chapter for a beginner, breaks down the differences between the analytic and synthetic, the a priori and the a posteriori, necessity and contingency, as well as explaining challenges against classical views. The valuable chapter on testimony closes the first part of Audi's book.

While Audi provides many notes and an extensive bibliography, he inserts his own appraisal of many conceptions in the text. Professional philosophers always take things with a grain of salt, but a newcomer might not know for instance that Audi's "revised view" of Reason isn't accepted by many. Watch your step.

Generally, though, the material has no prerequisites. However, to take an example, if one is bewildered by Audi's point that we don't believe everything we are justified in believing in, one is not at this book's required skill level.

Part II of the book contains two chapters that address the structure and growth of knowledge. Topics include the process, content, the structure of inference, along with a very beneficial treatment of views of justification known as foundationalism and coherentism.

Questions and answers about the nature and scope of knowledge comprise Part III. Audi explains the standard analysis of knowledge (knowledge = justified true belief) along with competitors to the theory. Audi also touches upon theories of truth and epistemology's frequent debate between views known as internalism and externalism. In addition, Audi presents his own powerful view that is internalist about justification and externalist about knowledge. Other sections briefly touch on scientific, moral, and religious knowledge.

Finally, at the end of the book, we find our old discourteous friend, skepticism. Most introductions position skepticism at the beginning of the dialogue, attempting to generate interest by prompting thoughts such as "whoa, like, how do we know what is like, true, man?" But by placing skepticism at the end, one is better prepared to analyze ideas like fallibility and uncertainty. Acquaintance with the authority of knowledge and the cogency of its grounds provides much perspective when thinking about the possibility of pervasive error.

If one wants a serious start to a serious subject, buy this book.
Summary: Good account of epistemology, but without science
This book is an excellent and relatively unpartisan account of the classical views of knowledge, where it comes from, and how it is justified. It is also very strong on explaining the reasoning behind these views.

It is also extremely frustrating if you come to this subject from a cognitive neuroscience or psychology background hoping to sort out the relationship of scientific theories of brain and mind and the classic epistemological question. I come to this book not as a philosophy student but as an interested outsider who is accustomed to interdisciplinary accounts relying on science to some extent to help address philosophical questions, and vice versa. With that expectation, this book just does not do a very good job clarifying things in terms of modern science, or even discussing the relationship of classical epistemology with science.

Much better books on modern epistemology that at discuss the relationship of classical epistemological questions and testable scientific theories include: "Inquiry and Evidence" by Susan Haack, and Alvin Goldman's work. Unfortunately, those don't serve as well as an introduction to the reasoning behind the epistemological questions, and they require some background in the basics to appreciate. Michael Williams' "Problems of Knowledge" is another good introduction that some will find a little more accessible that Audi.

If you're willing to dig in and deal with learning the foundations of epistemology independently of science, this book seems to be particularly good. However if you want a good broad overview of what we know about the mind and knowledge right now covering all disciplines, this will definitely dissappoint.
Summary: A confusing introduction to contemporary epistemology
A good book explains a subject in understandable language. Intelligent authors translate complex subjects, when billed as introductions, into terminology understandable by neophytes. Despite the abundance of printed praise on the jacket, this book is an excellent example of the opposite.
Perhaps a passage will demonstrate: "In saying that I justifiedly believe there is a green field before me, I am implying something else, something quite different, though it sounds very similar, namely, that I am justified in believing there is a green field before me."
There is an old rule concerning definitions that states, for clarity, do not to use the same word. This passage deals with defining justification and confounds the matter by attempting to introduce as separate concepts 'justified belief' and 'justified in believing.' There is little clarity here or elsewhere in the text. I sincerely regret purchasing this book.
