Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great Reference I have used Kauffmann's second edition book as a text book and greatly underappreciated its usefulness. Now that I am outside of the classroom and working as an assistant editor, I have found this third edition to be of great help. On several occasions I have had to refer to the book for problems that were plaguing both myself and the editors, and found the answers I need effortlessly. Kauffmann's step by step approach, with examples, makes navigating your way through a sometimes complicated and confusing Avid simple. A wonderful aspect of this book is its conversational, and less technical, style of writing, making it an easy to follow instructional book. As a side, I used this book heavily when I had difficulties authoring a 24p DVD project. Summary: Kauffmann combines straightforward style and cutting edge technology Sam Kauffmann's third edition of his Avid Editing textbook is the culmination of his usual down-to-earth writing style and the most up-to-date Avid technology. As the capabilities of digital editing continue to grow, Kauffmann accommodates these changes by incorporating some often-difficult concepts with very straightforward explanations and examples. In the past year, I have worked with both 24p and HD (720p), but sometimes I didn't fully comprehend Avid's role in dealing with each of these formats. Kauffmann has added several chapters to address issues like these--always with comprehensive clarity and unambiguous language (something that other software guides often lack). He also makes helpful revisions within pre-existing chapters to encompass changing software and hardware topics. Kauffmann's up-to-date books have proven to be a great source of support and education for me for many years. Additionally, for the past year, I have had the chance to take Kauffmann's advanced digital editing course, as well as teach under him in several filmmaking and editing courses. I can therefore vouch that his innate ability to explain difficult concepts originates straight from the source; that is, reading his book is as close to being in the classroom with him as humanly possible. Summary: Amazing - A must buy I came across this book when I looked up Avid and bought it immediately. I had read all of the previous edition reviews before I purchased this book and bought it without reservation.I really felt like I grasped the concepts for each chapter before moving on. Mr. Kauffmann not only shows you the tools in the AVID system, but with every tool gives you the reason and purpose behind it. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent Handbook For Avid Editors of All Levels A great reference for for any Avid editing suite. The Avid handbook is packed with strategies for workflow that offer huge time efficiencies. Steve Bayes is a wealth of information not just on Avid editing, but on video in general. He explains the concepts in a clear and concise fashion. I found the tips on exporting and color space considerations particularly helpful. I would highly recommend this book. Summary: The first choice for new and experienced Avid editors This is a "must have" book for all Avid editors. It concentrates on workflow issues and gives the editor insight into what the logic has been in developing how the Avid editing applications function. This book is as much "why" as "how to" and therefore transcends software version changes and updates that cause other manuals to become obsolete. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Up and running on FCP in a week If you are ever forced to quickly learn Final Cut pro for the odd job where Avid is not a viable option, or you want to start editing your on stuff on the cheap, buy this, read it and practise it for a week and you will be a Pro at Pro, knowing everything there is to know, at least, where to find it and whether it is doable or not. It is a book written by an Avid editor for Avid editors who have to go through the same learning curve. You can be very surprised going through it on how similar the two editing systems are and most of all, how quickly you can synthesise the information and make it second nature. I fervently recommend this book being so well written, going always to the point and covering everything properly. Summary: This book Yes Indeed As an Avid editor and now learning FCP, I can recommend this book for helping to understand where everthing is. This book is a must unless you want to tear your hair out. If you know how it feels going from Media Composer to DS, then you will understand why you need this book and I might add others. Summary: Moving from Avid to FCP? This book is great! We have been an Avid only edit house for years, but reciently purchased two Final Cut systems. Most of the transition was pretty easy, but trying to figure out how to do some of the things in FCP that we did in our sleep on the Avid slowed us down a bit. This book draws great parallels between the two systems. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Check Out the New Edition Dear Readers: There is a new edition of this book (3rd Edition) available that covers the latest versions of Avid's software, including Xpress Pro HD. It also includes information about editing 24p, HD, HDV projects. I hope you find it useful. Best, Sam Kauffmann Summary: best introduction I was a Media 100 editor for many years and my company switched to the Avid on Jan. 9, 2006. I didn't take any training but, I bought a training DVD set and 3 books. This book was the best, by far. It is presented by an editor who explains what you really need to know to get going and how to work around maintaining sync, etc. It was great. In less than a month, I completed 2 projects without a problem. I'm using Media Composer Adrenaline on a Mac. :) Summary: samples don't work with Avid Xpress DV 4.6 The book jacket says that the book's DVD-ROM will work with Xpress DV 3.0 and higher. The .omf video files were compressed at 20:1 using Media Composer and Xpress DV 4.6 does not support the 20:1 resolution, meaning that the sample video files cannot be imported and used in Xpress DV 4.6. This is a shame, because it seems like a good book and this is not really a problem that the author could have foreseen. Unfortunately, most places won't let you return a book after the DVD has been opened, so let this be a warning, FYI. Hopefully the upcoming 3rd edition will fix this problem. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Good enough for me! Nice book. I've been an NLE dabbler for a few years, but never very serious about it. After finishing this book, I feel pretty comfortable with avid xpress, which was pretty intimidating at first. Good, easy read. I would have liked color pictures, though... Summary: Clear, Concise guide! This is an excellent, well-written guide to the Avid Xpress Pro system, and while it can't replace the extended Authorized Avid Education advanced editing course, it is a great overview of the many different topics covered therein. But, more importantly, it covers many things not in the official Avid training guides - things that after reading this book one feels really should be, like practical tips, tricks, and notes for a more truly professional end project. I would definitely recommend this for serious editors and people who want to get into the deeper strengths of the Avid system... it moves quickly, and might be confusing for a complete beginner. Summary: great for people who know other editing applications I am just finishing up on this book, and after two solid days I have gone from no experience with avid to very comfortable. I don't know how well a new editor would do with this book, but if you already know FCP or Premiere this seems like an excellent way to learn all of the key concepts you need to run an editing app. This is the best instructional manual I have come across. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: A MUST HAVE for all Avid Liquid Users Generally speaking, the one thing that anger's most software owners is it's ineffective and poorly written user manual. In many cases, product documentation is written by the same people who create the product's underlying code. Rarely do these people understand what it is like to use the product. So while the documentation may be technically accurate, it's organization, context, appearance and overall utility severely suffers. Liquid users take heart... relief is in sight. For those of us who still like to rummage through the printed page, I am so glad to see a book (written by a film maker) that breaks the stereotypes of what we know as "user documentation." This book is not a tutorial, but serves similar objectives. Its almost as if Paul Ekert, the author, is looking over your shoulder and directing you on how to accomplish a specific task. By the time Avid was ready to release their new 7.0 version of Liquid, Paul Ekert released this updated version of his book. If you are familiar with his book on Pinnacle Liquid Edition 6, he did a lot more that simply swap the name Pinnacle for Avid and increment the 6 to a 7. Building upon the success of his 6.0 book, Paul took this opportunity to fully update his reference manual. Going well beyond Liquid's new features, improvements were made to the book's organization thus allowing users to find answers in a much more efficient manner. Most manuals sit on a bookshelf and are only utilized when you have a question. What I especially like about this book is its overall readability. Paul's friendly writing style will appeal to many Liquid editors. Recommendation: Even if you have the previous version of this book, you will want to keep you library current with this version. The bottom line a good read and an awesome reference. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Belin...รจ Pazzesco!!!! figata ci vediamo al solito posto alle 12.00. porta la corazzata pinuccio Summary: thorough, clear and structured I am a beginner with Avid and was daunted by all the different and options available to me. Monohan's book was just what I needed. I am currently giong through the book from A to Z, which gives me an overview of all the options and work-methods the program has. Even though I allready had set up my workspace, this book gave me some interesting tips. Even though I had allready developed a workflow for my previous projects, I learned some new options by reading this book. Interestingly, serving as a guide from a to Z is not where Monohan excells. It should be used as an index to all the available options from this program. Want to know how to find those audio-peaklevels? How to get rid of that nested alpha-channel? Or you want to remember that trick in lassoing to trim mode? Use the index or the table of contents and you'll find what you're looking for in no time. Great value for its price! Summary: It's a Manual I wish I just had the manual that came with the program. Often times you find the book more so telling you what it can do rather than how to actually do it. All in all, with it's help and a little time spent with the editing system you can figure this program out. It doesn't stray too far from the other major non-linear editing systems. Summary: |
