Summary: Great guide
I got this book before a big trip and it really helped me take better pictures and use more of the great features of this camera.
Summary: Digital Learner
Your can read the rest of the reviews for the nitty-gritty details ... for a new lerner in the digital world this is a best-buy. I have learned plenty on my Rebel even after having it for a year - from controls to composition to some tricks. If you just got your Rebel, invest the few dollars now.
Summary: OK Intro
The information was a little basic, but that's what I believe she was going for. It is a good book for those just starting out and wanting to know how to use their new XT. If you have already been taking pictures (especially digital pictures) for awhile there are better options out there such as Bryan Peterson's Understanding Digital Photography or John Shaw's Nature Photography Field Guide.

Summary: Magic Lantern Guides:Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT
I am an amateur photographer but wanted a camera I could grow with. The manuel that came with the camera was good but I felt I needed more information to get the full benefit of the camera. This book is wonderful and goes into more detail on all the functions this camera offers. It's easy to understand and I highly recommend this book.
Summary: Beware
This booklet (it's quite small) is not what you might expect.

Consider these facts before purchasing:

--About half of the book is not specific to the Digital Rebel--it's general photography basics. Choosing a lens, how to photograph landscapes, etc. In other words, filler.

--It's all in black and white.

--There are *no* example illustrations of the settings on the Rebel. So if they are talking about say, AWB, there are no illustrations about where the buttons are, what the camera display shows when buttons are pressed, etc. This is true throughout the booklet; it talks about settings, but never shows them.

Nutshell: this appears to be a very short booklet on the Rebel with a few general discussions on a few of the Rebel's features. However, there are no illustrations, not everything is covered, and one gets the feeling it was then filled out with generic information (including a long list of the accessories available at the end of the book).

The manual that comes with the camera is 10x better....
Summary: A 'real guide book' for a 'real camera'
If you are new to SLR photography and to the Rebel XT, this is the book to buy. It is certainly more than "just an expanded view of the skimpy owner's manual". I read the manual and didn't feel as competent to tackle some of the advanced features of this great camera as I do now having read Gucheon's book.

The book is 5" x 7.5" --not too big to carry along with the camera. The book's binding feels very sturdy and after several weeks of carrying it around, it's held up very well. His illustrations are large and clear, with many covering a full page. Sixteen pages of glossary terms have been really helpful and a nine page Index seems to have everything I've needed to look up.

Summary: Not giving any exercises
don have any this to sy this book is the same as the manual
i think if it has some exercis it would be much batter..
Summary: Met expectations
Provided good supplemental information to the Canon book that came with my camera. This is what I was looking for.
Summary: 20D my first digital camera
I liked this book, even though it covers more or less the same information as the 20 D manual, it helps a lot to clarify things (the 20D is my first digital camera). As such I would certainly recommend this book, especially to anyone using the 20D as a first digital camera. A few things I did not find in the book and may be these could be discussed and or explained in a future edition. Digital seems to be even more sensitive to contrast than slide film. Any picture with a sharp shadow line is a total loss. I live in the tropics. When using slide or film an UV filter is an absolute necessity, I even switched to skylight filters which take out some more blue, getting noticable better results. The book however suggests that for digital cameras these filters are not really needed. When using the flash the f stop will never exceed 5.6 (using the 420 EX flash, which should have sufficient power at aproximately 3 m range). I photograph geckoes and also use fill flash when photographing anolis lizards in the shadows, f8 would be better

Summary: A Wonderful Work...
Firstly, Bhikkhu Nanamoli (Osbert Moore) was a gifted intellectual and prized authentic textual translation above mere book writing. Unlike soooo many Buddhist authors in the West, he was NOT looking to sell a book and become an Author to impress friends and family or help sell his meditation retreats. His intent was always aimed at a scholarly (re: intellectually rigorous) rendering of sacred texts. This rare combination of a deeply intellectual mind with the veneration of a monks spirit towards his textual sources has given us some of the most pristine English translations of the Buddhas works.
This book was culled from the Pali canon and aims to give the modern reader an overview of the life of the Buddha. As the texts chosen for this work are strewn across 10 000 or so pages of the Pali language canon, the author has achieved a remarkable feat of editing. It gives the English world an authentic overview of who the Buddha was and what he did. The selections are rendered in clear lucid English, with every passage referenced. It is not a biographical novel however. There are no artificial attempts at plot, or other literary devices, or to turn the Canon into something more conventional. It is wholly faithful to the source material.
If you have any interest in whom the Buddha was and what he taught, start with this book. And leave the pseudo-biographies and novelizations to the hacks.
Summary: A great antology from the Vinaya Pitaka
The book presents a selection of the suttas with an historical underpinning and without ever extending beyond the limited borders of the Pali Canon.
This Biblic-like account, given the basically atemporal nature and catechism of the Buddha's teachings, results in a quite sketchy approach to Buddhism that might contrast in method with the Dhamma teaching and that might thus suggest against using the text as an introducion to the practice.
Still the book has the great merit of providing translations from the Vinaya Pitaka, the basket presently most neglected by Western translators, as well as giving a handy reference to specific episodes difficulty retrieved in the original texts.
Summary: Buddhism Changes Too.
This is my humble opinion on the importance and place of this book.

The Changes of Buddhism:

1. Theravada Buddhism = techniques of making art
2. Mahayana Buddhims = the skillful and creative artist
3. Western (existential) Buddhism = modern artist

Theravad: "The Life of the Buddha"
is filled with the actual teachings and words of the Buddha.

Mahayana: "A Guide To The Bodhisattva's Way of Life" by Santideva
is filled with relevant insights in everyday life that were first inspired
by the original words of the Buddha

Western: "Buddhism Without Belief" by Stephen Batchelor
asks do we really know? What is relevant?
Instead of accepting or rejecting,
we can admit that we don't really know,
but still be open minded and have the resolve
to continue to question and explore.

Summary: Cannonize this book
I've read part or all of this book several times, as the multiple highlightings & margin notes in my treasured copy attest. It is readable and accessible to the reader just beginning to learn about how we received our Christian canon of Scripture, while it is not the least beneath the intelligence of the advanced student of the Bible. I've used it in teaching Bible Classes on the canon at our Lutheran church & have seen its appeal to those making honest inquiry at all levels of familiarity. Bruce is unapologetic and effective in his "conservative" approach, & make his case convincingly. I've been impressed at how even "liberal" commentators who arrive at different conclusions nevertheless feel compelled to quote him -- with respect -- as THE authority of the counterpoint to their position. If you read only one book on the formation of the Christian Biblical canon, THIS is the one I MUST recommend. It is scholarly but not in the least arrogant. While Bruce is confident in his orhthoxy, he is also completely intellectually honest and is unafraid in appreciating the most probing, critical inquiry. This book has my highest recommendation.
Summary: Holy Words of Holy Book
Amazing that this work is almost twenty years old now. Still salient and so pertinent to wild rampage of Gnostic Gospels et al that are now appearing attacking Biblical witness.

What they do not possess and the Biblical books have in spades is carefully and meticulously explored by this fine NT exegete. They have the consensus of the apostles and the church, thus out of all the challengers to canonicty, rule of faith handed down, the surviving books are accepted as those to be read and used in church and to decide doctrinal matters.

To now surface books which have not be hid but at their appearance were examined either by the apostles or those taught by the apostles and found to be lacking the credentials to be part of the canon, to be expunged.

This book will aid those interested enough to clear the air on these important matters and see that the Scripture is authentic in meeting the test of time and reputable eyewitnesses who knew firsthand what was truth and what was phony.

Tracing of usage of this canon and textual criticism matters are covered well here by this scholar, with marvelous references which can be followed up by the inquisitive and serious investigator.

Summary: Excellent Scholarship
This is an excellently researched work by a master in the field. Bruce discusses all aspects of the history of canonization with depth and precision. He includes many interesting asides, yet maintains a thoroughly orthodox perspective. It turns out that the New Testament authors quote from the Samaritan Pentateuch at times. That the Old Testament canon really wasn't finally decided until Luther's time. That the earliest references to II Peter are late 2nd century, claiming it to be psuedopyphrigal or questionable at best. These and many other pearls await the reader of the text.

I was disappointed though that Bruce never really explains how the canon became what we have- at what moment or after what time the majority of the church accepted our present canon, and why. The closest he comes is describing how Eusebius compiled 50 copies of the Bible for Constantine, and this was the first time that this was done, with all 27 books. (Incidently including Revelations, not because Eusebius liked it- he felt it was probably uncanonical- but rather because Constantine liked it because he felt it predicted his coming. Which is...disturbing to say the least.) Understanding this moment, and why, was the main reason why I wanted to read the book.

However, Bruce does a great job of describing the various canons, their similarities, and why the questionable books of II & III John, II Peter, Jude, Revelations, The Shepherd of Hermes, The Didache, I Clement, and the Epistle of Barnabas made the cut or not, for various communities and apostolic fathers. After reading this book, I find it impossible to view the canon in the same way. Not to doubt it, but to see it as an expression of an original oral tradition. Which is for the best I think. After all, in our religion it is not the Word become Book, but rather the Word become Flesh. The book (or books, in the Greek) should never supplant the living center of the faith of the Spirit, for that road is the path to idolatry.

Summary: A comprehensive introduction to Buddha's teachings
A good and structured pattern of the buddha's essential teachings, that would lead the reader to get more and more interested in this philosophy. A book to have in your personal library if personal development is a priority.
Summary: Overview of the sutras
An excellent overview of the sutras (suttas in Pali) which gives more than an excellent introduction to the entire tipitaka of the Pali scriptures. If you have time to read only one book on the Buddhist scriptures, this is the one.
Summary: Thanks to Bhikkhu Bodhi
Very simply one of the best books on Buddhism that exists. Has helped me tremendously.
