Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The best manual of any kind I've ever read As a professional writer who has written dozens of technical books over the years, I feel qualified to comment on the writing skills of the author. Simply put, this is the best-written book on a technical topic that I've ever read. The writing is crisp and easy-to-read; the material is extremely well-organized and flows well from one topic to the next. I consider myself a very good photographer, and thought I knew a lot about photography. When I started learning neat new things in the Quick Tour, I realized how much more there is to know. I think I'll read this book several times... Summary: Inspiring Guide for Canon Cameras I loved this book. It's the perfect guide to stick in a corner of my camera bag and carry around with me when I need some extra advice. I'm not exactly a newbie, but still found lots of new tips here. This is a valuable book for all Digital Rebel owners. Summary: Wonderful resource for all I am fairly experienced as a photographer, but still learned quite a bit about how to use my Digital Rebel XT from this book. It is lavishly illustrated and contains clear but concise instruction on how to use all the features of this camera. The recipes are good, too, for shooting various types of pictures in all kinds of situations. If you're a veteran photographer, you'll find this book valuable. If you're new, you MUST own it. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: This is a 5 star book as long as you know what you're buying! I read the reviews of this book from other members. And they hovered around the, "this book is a rehash of what you already know" or, "a wordy version of the owner's manual." Maybe so, and this is precisely why I have to give this book 5 stars. I had a very nice 35mm SLR about 20 years ago (I'm 37 as of this review). I long since sold it and have not held anything other than some form of point-and-shoot for nearly two decades. But now I am getting back into photography again. I did a LOT of research and ended up on the EOS 20D. After reading the instruction manual that came with the book I realized I had more questions than answers. The instruction manual reads as though you already know everything it's mentioning. It's a large reference guide, but hardly a well-written instruction book for the EOS 20D. So, despite the reviews, I bought the book. And am VERY happy I did. I suspect the negative reviews are written by people who didn't really need to read this book in the first place. But if you're like me, and you're fairly green to all of this and are a virgin to the digial SLR world, then this book is a must for you if you have a 20D. The book is NOT an instruction book on how to take better photos. But it explains in very plain English how every single feature works, what it might be used for, and in a few cases, how to utilize some of the camera's features. I personally found this book to be invaluable. And without it I would have remained lost. Trying to decipher the hard-to-read instruction booklet that comes with the camera. After reading the book front to back I was confident in adjusting the camera's settings, using the 20D's onboard menus and screen-controlled settings. The book is written as though you're completely new to the 20D. And in the case of some professionals I can see how this almost might be condescending. But if you use the book for it's intended purpose (a more easily understood instruction manual) instead of what it isn't (How to get the best results from your 20D) then you'll be happy with the book. Hope this helps. I see 1-star bashes about this book and I am left to assume it's from people who never needed to read it in the first place. Summary: a better manual for the 20D a better in depth guide for the Canon 20D with a lot of tips. Summary: User-friendly adjunct to owner's manual It's somewhat basic, but helpful. Puts lots of information (including much that's in the owner's manual) in a context that's meaningful to users. The owner's manual describes how to operate the camera; this book provides additional context that makes the owner's manual more meaningful. The book is compact enough to put in the bag with the camera so that you can review it wherever you want. I'd recommend it. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Flawed, but excellent introduction to your EOS 20D... Yes, as stated in other reviews, this book is overpriced given the print quality (which appears to have been "published" at the local Kinko's), and the CD included is essentially worthless, but is there to justify the high price point. All photos are in black and white and printed on cheap, recycled, rough textured paper...no-no's for photography/art books, for sure... that said, this booklet is for the budding/novice photographer who has perhaps just stepped into the world of SLR photography. It serves that purpose well, giving specific guidelines for situations and effects using the 20D specifically. It IS well-written, although I did miss the quality in the photographs...the book suffers because of this. A book at this price point SHOULD have better print quality, no question. Overall, I felt satisfied by its' contents, though. I do NOT think that the Canon manuals give the same information, so I really do not agree with the other reviewers who stated that this book is redundant. I would HIGHLY recommend to the authors to drop the price to about $10, leave off the CD, OR print the book in color on higher quality paper if you want to keep the same price. Sure, your margin goes down, but to compete you're gonna have to do this eventually... Summary: Over priced manual I was dissapointed with quality of the book. I expected the quality to be a little better than just a black and white photo copied spiral bound book. The example pictures in the book would have been better had they been in color. The price of this book is way over priced. Summary: Good basic instructions. Good way to get started. Easier than struggling through and trying to figure things out on your own. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: If you own the camera, you should own this book. . . Regardless of your skill level. I know this is not a forum, but I must respectfully disagree with reviewer V. Carlson, and I must correct the record because he/she is spreading disinformation with this statement. . . "I found this book to offer no extra info beyond the camera's original user manual. Good descriptions of the camera functions but no real tips or recommendations for how to use/setup camera." This book is absolutely loaded with tips on setting up the camera and using the settings. For example, in the camera manual there are 3 small pages of bullet points on white balance. Mr. Guncheon has nine pages of rich text on white balance. Nine pages! Included are helpful tips such as the Shade or Cloudy WB setting will warm up sunrise and sunset pictures, with the Shade setting being more pronounced. In the area on parameters, the manual says you can set three of your own. Mr. Guncheon has several pages on parameters, including three starting ideas for setting up your own parameters, one for cloudy day shooting, one for portraits, and one to give you the old Kodachrome look in your photos. There are nearly 170 pages of detailed explanations of how things work, why they are important, and tips on how you might use the setting to produce better photos. I know V. Carlson is entitled to his/her opinion. . .but he/she is not entitled to their own facts. and the statement quoted above is simply false. If he/she didn't like the book, that's fine, but it goes waaaaaay beyond the camera manual. Way beyond. I am a fairly experienced photographer in the technical sense, but new to the digital world. I think this book is invaluable for everyone, although if you've been shooting digital for years you may not get as much out of it as I did. But I think there will be a tip or an explanation here for everyone. I'll say it again. If you own the Digital Rebel XT, you should own this book. John Collins Summary: Magic Lantern Guides: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT Disappointed....does not accomplish much more than the instructions included with the camera. Summary: EOS Digital Rebel Guide Does The Job This is pretty much what you'd expect - a general elaboration on the manual giving a second chance to get your head around stuff and placing the XTs many features into greater context. Not invaluable but many new to Digital SLR will find it useful. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: MUST HAVE BOOK If you are just getting started, frustrated trying to understand canon's version, this is the book for you! It is so easy to understand, the terminology, the highlighted boxes for quick reference, pictures are large, it is an easy to follow guide. If you don't understand they have a picture to show you. I love the spiral, the paper is a thicker quality. Yes, it is in black and white, so what! Everything is easily spelled out for you. If you don't have it, get it, the cost should not be a consideration, when you think about what you spent for the camera:) Best book I have bought lately Summary: Very Good Book I must disagree with most of the negative reviews of this book. The book is exactly what it claims to be. A short course for the Canon EOS Digital Rebel. It presents it's material as such. . . starting from knowing little or nothing about the camera or digital photography. The pictures in the book are presented in black and white and that seems to be the areas most people have a problem with. I went through the book and then reviewed the material on the CD(which has good color photos) which enhanced the book. I enjoyed it throughly and benefited from it but then I'm only a beginner in digital photography. It is not meant to be an "Advanced Course" and never claims to be. It takes little for granted about what a person knows about photography and builds a good foundation. I have read several other digital photography books and I always ended up with more questions than answers. . . . I now feel comfortable in using my camera . . . which is what I bought the book for. I still have a lot to learn but the book never promised I'd know it all when I finished. . . Summary: Free Learning center for Digital Rebel Here is a link from the Canon web site to the Canon digital learning center for the Digital Rebel (300E). It contains basic info about this camera. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: A well-written alternative to the manual. This book was recommended to me by many online photography forums, and I'd have to say that for a BEGINNER I found this book very helpful. Essentially, it is an expanded reader-friendly version of the user's manual. I've read the user's manual a few times through, and my eyes pretty much glazed over. I only actually applied the various setting by reading through the functions in this book. You most certainly will be disappointed if: (a) you're already familiar with dSLR settings (b) you've already mastered every technique in the manual (c) you can't get past the black and white photos (they are color in the pdf) But if you're looking for practical, more user-friendly way of accessing the power of the Rebel XT, this is your book. A lot of techniques and terms are explained in detail that are only mentioned in the manual. This might be redundant for some, but for those totally new to photography, where the Rebel XT is their first SLR, I found the expanded explanations very helpful. I'll admit the black and white photos are a bother, but for what I've practically applied from reading this manual, it's a small price to pay. Summary: A Short Course in Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT/350D Photography (Book & eBook) Don't buy this book! After I received it, I returned it the next day. It is almost the same as the manual that comes with your camera. Summary: Most pathetic excuse for a photography book Just received and opened this item. I am appalled! This is a book on photography complete with photographs and illustrations and descriptions of the photographs and illustrations. It includes a discussion on how to achieve the results that are depicted in the photographs and illustrations . The problem is the photographs and illustrations are all black and white so you have no idea what the result is. I think it is just a photocopy of a real book. That is exactly hwat it looks like is a photocopy. Not professionally typeset at all. I am very dissatisfied with this purchase. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: not worth 5 bucks this is book is an insult, it will teach you nothing. Summary: Save yourself the shipping charges... And just run a $5 bill through your shredder rather than wasting your money on this "simple to the point of being useless" book. If you really feel compelled to throw $5 at someone to essentially go through your owner's manual with a highlighter, this is the book for you. But if you expect to learn anything from this book that you couldn't easily find in the owner's manual or elsewhere, you'll be very disappointed. I have some advice for you that I feel is far more valuable than any "insight" that this book provides. That would be that if you're such a novice as far as photography is concerned that you'd benefit from the extremely basic and simplistic insights provided by this book, you really should set your sights quite a bit lower camera-wise than the Digital EOS Rebel. For example, if you don't know the definition of depth of field (a very basic concept in photography for which this book provides a definition), this camera is probably way too complex for you in the first place. As they say, you need to learn to walk before you can run. Do yourself a favor and get a much simpler and less complex camera to learn on... there are many of them out there that have a much more appropriate feature set for the novice photographer that can still allow you to take great pictures and to grow as you learn. You can always trade up to a camera this complex if and when you've gained enough experience to benefit from its features. At the same time, invest in a book that can provide truly valuable information and insight for the digital photography novice, such as "Digital Photography for Dummies". I can't imagine that there are too many people out there who aren't familiar with the "Dummies" series of books. But just in case you are, they're the perfect choice for the person who might say the following to himself or herself... "I'm really interested in learning about digital photography, and I don't know the first thing about it." The Dummies series are loaded with everything the beginner needs to know about the topic (such as, what is depth of field and how do I use it to take better pictures?). They always use a very light-hearted, "tongue-in-cheek" approach that keeps you entertained while you're learning the basics. Such a book does essentially everything that the book being reviewed fails to do. The cover says "Only $5 - Really!" Well, a low price on something that provides as little value as does this book is no bargain. I think they rely on this "it's only $5" mindset to get you to purchase the book without any careful consideration. That's what I did, and had I not been rushing when I ordered this book, I would have taken the time to read the sage advice of Dr. Sunny and D. Penrice, who wrote reviews in the past to try to warn me and others that this book is a waste of money. Now I join them in trying to warn the rest of you. If you're looking for a book to help the beginner, save the $5 that you might spend on this book and invest it on the slightly more expensive, but far more valuable "Digital Photography for Dummies". That will be a far wiser use of your money. Summary: Free Learning center for Digital Rebel Here is a link from the Canon web site to the Canon digital learning center for the Digital Rebel (300E). Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Close but no cigar... Far more accessibly presented than the actual product manual, but I was certainly left wanting more technical and procedural detail. You'll learn more and more easily than you would with the OEM manual alone: it also makes a good field guide because the index is direct and comprehensive, so it won't slow you down. The photos the author includes as creative examples are, for the most part, of little use and, more than occasionally, a bit weird. Summary: Great guide I disagree with some reviews on this site. This guide was much better than the instruction book that I got with the camera. Why dis a guide because it doesn't mention microdrives when most folks don't recommend them--they are fragile, produce heat, and with the price of memory dropping, not such a great buy. I found this guide helpful and I have owned several digital cameras. Summary: shallow I bought this book because the manual that comes with the camera is a bit cryptic. I was disappointed because I wanted lots more technical data but I did learn a few things I didn't know. For instance it doesn't even mention micro drives when are a good inexpensive to get lots of storage space but then I did learn about a special mode to use with photo shop. It's too basic for me but I would guess it's too advanced for beginners. Perhaps it's great for folks who are just starting to stretch their digital picture taking from point and shoot Summary: |
