Summary: A fantastic book for a very much loved park
Did you know that the elm lined mall leading to the Bethesda fountain and the view of the ramble are actually based on the layout of a church? Or that all of the lakes in Central Park are manmade. This and many other very interesting facts are interspersed with lovingly taken photographs of the park which were taken by the author of the book as well. Miller starts decribing how the park came to be and the leading ideas and ideals that lead to its creation by Olmsted and Vaux. She proceeds to describe systematically the various sections of the park providing historical information as well. She delves into the some of the controversies and compromises that Olmsted and Vaux encountered in the creation of one of the finest examples of 19th Century art but it is not a comprehensive history of the park. There is a 2 page map of the park at the of the book with a legend identifying each of the features discussed in the book. If you are first time visitor to the city wishing to explore the park in detail or a life long New Yorker this book will delight and surprise you.
Summary: Definitive Review of the Finest Work of Art in NYC
As an avid fan of Central Park who has been exploring it and studying the books on it for decades, I was amazed at what there was still to learn about it from Miller's book. For example, other historians allude to a connection between Central Park's design and the Hudson River School of landscape art: Miller provides actual sources of the designer's inspiration and shows the results explicitly in the photos. And all in a way that is not at all "bookish" but instead makes you want to go right in and see for yourself the scenes she shows so well in the book's illustrations. The beautiful photos and fascinating stories and the well chosen historical prints all work together in such a compelling and entertaining way that one might never realize one is being educated by a superb textbook in the field of art.
With her emphasis on the past of the park, and its present restored beauty, it is understandable that the author does not use very much of the book's valuable space on the remaining present-day problems, but she might at least have alluded to the incongruity of the city's insistence on using this artistic matepiece as a through route for motor traffic during the majority of daylight weekday hours. In effect, the city's Dept. of Traffic is providing a refuge from the chaos of the surrounding streets during rush hours - but for the cars, not for the people. If you want to appreciate the park shown in this book, go during the times when the traffic noise does not drown out the wind in the trees, the birdsong, and the happy voices of children!

Summary: New York's Oasis
Central Park is breath taking and this book does a fine job of giving the reader a feel for what makes this 850 acre masterpiece so special. The book is quite thorough and does an commendable job of disecting various sections of the park. The color photos are vivid and well thought out and the text is highly informative. The author has a real love for the park and it comes out in her writing. If you have never visited Central Park or have visited and fell in love with it like so many others, you will love this book. This oasis really is the heart of New York City and to understand New York you have to understand the parks history and its vast importantance to the city. Central Parks importance to New York and New Yorkers cannot be overstated, I can't imagine the city without it.

Summary: Perfect for a roadtrip
I bought this along with some other park books for a 2 week roadtrip I recently took. It was by far the most useful of the guidebooks I bought. If you are going to one specific park buy books specific to it, but if you are roadtripping and plan on visiting a few, it is far easier to get this book and not have to hassle with a car full of books. Frommer's guidebooks are by no means the best guides every written, but they are quite adequate. The information was pertinent and useful. 3.5 stars for the quality of the content (uninspired but useful), 5 stars for convenience. 4.25 stars overall.
Summary: Essentail Info
I have used Frommer's as a reference in the past, and I wasn't disappointed with this purchase. The if you only have X amount of time is particularly useful!
Summary: Useful, but very outdated!
This book is mostly excellent... The park reviews and information about the hiking trails are very accurate. But the restaurant and lodging info is oudated, some by as much as five years! For instance, the book lists a phone number for a Best Western in Estes Park. The number leads to a hotel which lost it's Best Western affiliation back in 1998. One wonders why... In other places, the book lists restaurants which don't exist and other grossly incorrect information. One would expect much more from a Frommer's 4th edition guide dated 2004. Use this book with another guide, and you'll be all set.

Summary: An interesting insight into the rocks and wildlife of Glacier
This is a comprehensive review of the geology and natural history of the Glacier area and will enhance a visit to the Park. It is not a guidebook in the traditional sense of listing accommodation and restaurants, itineraries etc. It has some colour photos, although most are black and white.
Summary: Excellent Survey of the Geology, Flora, and Fauna of Glacier
Obviously this is not a book intended to help you plan a trip to Glacier National Park, so the one-star review below was evidently given simply out of ignorant spite at having bought the wrong book!

If, however, you are looking for a book that discusses the geology, the flora, and the fauna of the stunning wilderness that is Glacier National Park, you can hardly do better than this one. And, if you have a brain that's turned on and are travelling in the park for any considerable length of time, as I did recently, believe me, you will have hundreds of questions about how that mountain got shaped that way or why those flowers only grow in this region or when the big-horned sheep are likely to be visible--and you will be looking for such a book.

This book discusses the different habitats and ecological niches that the park comprises, from the McDonald Creek Valley to the Alpine, includes checklists of native plants and animals, where in the park to find particular species, maps, and beautiful full color photos, and provides enough background on general principles of geology and ecology that you won't need any other resource.

On my visit to the park I saw many people with separate books for animals, for birds, for flowers, and so on. But this book has it all. I highly recommend it.

Summary: Not a very useful book
I don't recommend this book, except if you're interested in learning about how the area around the park was formed a long time ago. Otherwise, this book is of no help on a trip to Glacier.

Summary: Repeated Enjoyment
Every year goes by and this simple tale becomes more treasured and heartwarming. I have given dozens of copies of this book to friends, birders and non interested alike. Everyone is grateful for the inspiration that this unusual piece of nature brings.

We watch eagles return to a nest along a stretch of the Llano River that falls in line with a highly traveled highway and the human reaction is just the same as the thousands of New Yorkers. Scores and scores of strangers with craned necks and binoculars in raised and ready position, standing in the back of their truck beds only to get a little closer to the marvel of the eagles on the the back side of our very own ranch and river.

From fall to spring each year my weekend exploration includes a trip to see the eagles and I am always thinking through whom else I could share Red Tails In Love with...it is not hard.
Summary: Purchased this book in protest against Pale Male's eviction
As a New Yorker, I hadn't really paid much attention to Pale Male before this unfortunate state of affairs. There was something shockingly callous and arrogant in the way the board of 927 Fifth Avenue destroyed this magnificent bird's home. I hope the hawks will eventually get their nest back.

I would like to find out more about this star's history and family. My whole family is now crazy about him and Lola.

Hail Pale Male!
Summary: Enchanting
As I write this at the very end of 2004, a red-tailed hawk drama has hit the press: The nest of a minor celebrity, Pale Male, the hero of the non-fictional "Red Tails in Love," had his nest summarily and probably illegally removed from the tony 5th Avenue address where he has nested for many a year.

I happened to be in the middle of this divinely wonderful book when the news hit the airwaves, and I took it hard. Marie Winn, the ornithology (for lack of a more romantic word) columnist for The Wall Street Journal, wrote this lovely account of a band of birdwatchers who discover nesting raptors right across from Central Park in 1998. This was before 9/11 by a few years, and it has that wonderful innocence we all felt about life before the attacks.

The story concerns a red-tailed male hawk, dubbed "Pale Male" by the birdwatchers because of his unusually pale coloring, and his various mates and fledglings who live and breed in the most exclusive of addresses: New York's Upper East Side. We get to know the birds, their babies, their nesting triumphs and tragedies. We learn about the phenomenally prolific wildlife in Central Park, from birds to turtles to raccoons to dragonflies to butterflies to edible plants. We learn to know and love the dedicated band of independent souls who track these wonders of nature from season to season, year to year.

I hope that all will go well with Pale Male this year. And I hope that anybody who has any doubt about the beauty of the human spirit and the creatures who inhabit the earth with us will read this simply wonderful book!

Summary: Many Complaints, But Didn't Stop Reading
James Gurson is a NYPD Detective. He is a "second-generation blue" who is constantly battling to establish himself as a reliable and trustworthy officer. His father committed suicide over an unarmed punk dealer he killed, having thought he had a gun. Gurson was a child when it happened, and he's been trying to live it down his whole life.

Didi Kane is Gurson's lesbian, African American partner. She's a tough-nosed woman in a white man's world, but she holds her own. At least until her previous partner, Charlene Leone, shows up dead. Not far away, Gurson, out for a walk, happens upon another corpse, psychoanalyst Orville Gretz, dead of supposed carbon monoxide poisoning. Gurson is the only one who doesn't think it's a suicide. Everyone else thinks Gurson is too close to the case and his judgment is impaired because his dad committed suicide the same way.

It comes out that Didi and Charlene were lovers and may have fudged some reports. Suddenly Didi is a probable suspect in Charlene's murder. Didi and Gurson decide to keep working together. They begin investigating the sordid lives of Charlene and Orville, two apparently unrelated deaths.

Gurson's archrival in this story is Tucker Norville, an Assistant District Attorney whose goal in life is to make everyone miserable, especially Gurson. He's an alcoholic and jealous man, who is determined to break Gurson like he broke his father. He was the man prosecuting Gurson's father and he takes every opportunity he can to bring it up and rub it in Gurson's face. Like father, like son, is Norville's motto when it comes to the Gurson men.

An Hour to Kill has a shaky start. The opening scene had a peeping-tom spying on a guy being gratified in an alley. This was followed by a psychoanalyst lusting after one of his patients and copulating with another in his office. It made me wonder if there was going to be a real plot, or just a lot of shock factor.

Throughout the book the reader is lead to believe the killer is one character but near the end there are more than a few curves. I realize it's supposed to be a mystery but I felt like the severe turns were more of a deception. Once the change happened it became obvious where the new direction was heading.

Another annoyance was the confusing point of view and lack of differentiation among character's dialogue. This occurred throughout. They all spoke with the same short and often incomplete sentences, which also contributed to the point of view problem.

Despite these complaints, I didn't stop reading. It's like when you come across a traffic accident. You know you shouldn't gawk but you do anyway. I gawked into a strange world of fetish sex and psychologically dysfunctional people (not your average dysfunctional ones, either.) If you like books with sex, violence and demented characters then I'm sure you'll like this one

[...]
Summary: Excellent debut novel
Among the many "debut" authors the reading public sees each year, I found Ms. Yapalater's novel quite interesting. It is pretty much a police procedural/murder mystery with a couple of interesting characters. The plot grabs you and keeps you interested to last page. It is one of those books where you have to read just one more chapter to find out what happens next. A well done mystery, I look forward to more of Ms. Yapalater's work.
Summary: Read in about an Hour
Teehee, I exagerated a little. Truth be told though this is a fast paced impressive debut. I started this novel with an impression that the authoress could be the literary love child of Larry Brooks and Karin Slaughter, but quickly appreciated Ms. Yapolenter's prose comparision free.

Two bodies are found in Central park a young woman burnt, and a man who is the victim of apparant suicide. Two tenacious cops are unwilling to let the cases close so patly as some would wish and investigate to discover the truth.

This novel is gritty, without being graphic, and while there are parts I suspected before the author revealed the plot twists I was kept guessing more than in many I have read in the genre.

This book zooms along while Yapolenter adds surprises, delves into her characters psyches and basically writes an excellent all around police proceedural thriller whose dialogue rings true and characters' motivations kept secret until the thrilling end.

Summary: A Smokies Essential
This book made our trip! Adams' trail descriptions and ratings were spot on. We came to rely on this guide when planning our daily outings.

Reverence for the Park and those who work there came across clearly in his prose, but there was plenty of delightful humor as well (as in the list of Hikes for People Training to be Couch Potatoes!).
Summary: High Quality Guide
This guide is typical for Falcon - First Rate. It has good trail descriptions, a mix of historical information, and the handy guide to get you to the right trails quickly. The only thing I'd like to see is a page dedicated to small scale reference maps at the beginning of each section. The trail maps are fine, but too close in to see the relative placement of the trails. Besides that, and a few typos, this is everything most folks would need for the park. This book is a definite buy.

Summary: From a non-New Yorker
I have not yet heard from my sister and brother-in-law, who were the recipients of this Christmas gift. They have an apartment on Central Park, but also have a place in Key West and may not yet have received the present. I thought it was a handsome book.
Summary: Simply AMAZING
Just one look at the images of the beautiful Warblers amongst the tree limbs will melt your heart... This is one to definately have on your coffee table!!!
Summary: In Central Park without Binoculars
Birds flying up and down the Atlantic flyway inevitably encounter a huge patch of concrete, asphalt and brick. In the center they see a large patch of green, with plants and insects. That's why Central Park in New York City is one of the best birding spots in North America. Several hundred avian species can be found there. In addition, there is another species there in large number, Homo sapiens birdwatcher and still another smaller subspecies, Homo sapiens bird photographer.

With all these birds, birders and bird photographers, there was a huge niche for a book called "Birds of Central Park". Cal Vornberger has filled that niche.

Vornberger has digitally captured the wide variety of birds that pass through Central Park. He presents these birds by season rather than in taxonomical order, which helps to give an impression of the bird life in the park the way that a birder would see it. Like all good photographers Cal is concerned with the light. But his style is different from those of other bird photographers, like Art Morris or Tom Vezo. Instead of being concerned with artistic composition, or deep focus to give a sense of the environment, the author seems aimed at a sense of intimacy with the individual birds. Most of the birds pictured fill the frame completely, forcing us to focus on the individual.

What is amazing is not only how close Vornberger has gotten to his subjects, but how he has caught them in the details of their daily lives. I have never seen so many photographs of birds with food, whether insects, berries or crustaceans, in their mouth. And he has caught many of these birds in flight, reminding me of the bird pictures of the great Eliot Porter. But the artist that Vornberger's portraits most remind me of is the great John James Audubon. There is this same sense of intimacy and presentation against a subtle background.

Occasionally, Vornberger brings his own special aesthetic to the book, as when he pictures a cardinal taking off in the snow on the face page to the winter section. The bird's wings are cut off, the bird faces away from us and the only way that the reader can tell that the white background is snow is from the white snowflakes that follow the bird's ascent. And yet this picture captures a moment better than most technically perfect photographs.

Vornberger's occasional remarks interspersed with the pictures often present a little known fact about the subject or give a hint to other bird photographers hoping to duplicate his accomplishments.

This book should not be considered a guide to Central Park's birds, although there is a convenient pocket guide in a slipcover in the back of the book. Instead it is a testimonial to the birds of Central Park. New York lovers, birders and photographers will want to page through this book to recall the avian pleasures of the park.
