Summary: Great study guide for the scjp exam
Like the head-first series, this book explains the concepts in a manner that is easy to understand. I especially liked the 2-minute drill at the end of each chapter, which presents a bulleted list of important points.

I believe that studying the concepts presented in this book will enable me to pass the exam when I take it later this year.
Summary: One Of the Top Two SCJP Books
In the last two years, I have explored all the SCJP books, and I find the following two books very useful:

1. This Book:
This is a very comprehensive book and the focus on the exam objectives is pretty good. There are lots of praises already done for this book. So, I only want to point out from the Introduction inside the book that this is NOT the book for the beginners, it's only for advanced programmers.

2. The SCJP Exam for J2SE 5 by Paul Sanghera (Apress).
This book is new, so not many people know about it. The special thing about this book is that the way material is presented, this book is also good for beginners and intermediate programmers. It also has an excellent focus on the exam objectives. Another special feature of the book that I liked is that it presents complete runnable code examples distributed over all the chapters. You can downlaod the code examples and experiment with them. This can be very useful for the beginners because the SCJP exam is very code intensive. Bottom line: You can prepare for the exam while learning Java programming. If you are advanced programmer, skip the first chapter.
This book does not have a CD but a complete practice exam with well explained answers to the exam questions is given in an Appendix.
Both books re excellent books by their own virtue and get 5 stars from me.
Summary: all you ever need to pass the 310-035 exam
the book says it all, this is all you ever need to pass the 310-035 exam (although it's a bit obsolete now, better going for the java 5.0 exam). i buy this book together with khalid's book from amazon, they are both very good but has difference flavor. this one is easier to read and understand and full of humour, but covers only what you need to pass the exam. khalid's book on the other hand is very dense, it covers more than you need to pass the exam but it's good if you want to grasp the deep knowledge of java, not very easy to read though. if you just want to pass the exam and can choose only one book, this is definitely the best choice.

Summary: Working on your MCSE? Then get this set of books
This was my sole study guide for the MCSE Server 2003 based certification path, and I was not disappointed. The format is clear and easy to read. The books do a fantastic job of outlining WHY you are learning something, not just WHAT you need to know to pass the exam. I think this is what sets MS Press books apart from the competition: the book itself is structured to the best LEARNING format, and NOT to just passing the exam. I came away from these books with a much greater appreciation for Microsoft's Server and AD technologies (I come from a Linux background since 1995 and I'm the first to knock MS), and these books will be on your reference shelf for years to come -- or at least until the next version of Server ships.

It took me since August, 2005 until August, 2006 to obtain my MCSE. These books are BIG. You'll find yourself re-reading chapters multiple times. First to get the content, then to do the practice questions and end of lesson/end of chapter questions, then finally to review the end of lesson/end of chapter summaries right before writing the exam. But don't be discouraged. The knowledge that these books impart will allow you to THINK through the exam questions, rather than just basing it on memorization techiques.

If you're going to do your MCSE and really want to LEARN, then get these texts. If you just want to pass the exams and never work on Servers, then look elsewhere.
Summary: Well Done.
I've belonged to the Unix world since 1993, working with low level stuff as kernel, device drivers, virus, assembly, C, etc.. and now I'm trying to learn Windows a bit and have enough conditions to take all tests (290, 291, 293, 294). No problems. This a very good kit about MS Windows 2003, well written, well organized and deserve 5 stars.

Dan Holme worried with all details for us and provided a clear text about MS Windows 2003. Stay calm. It's very easy to take the
exam.

Summary: Ok coverage but lots of mistakes
No book can really cover the entire material but the no. of typos, mistakes and incorrect code samples is really exasperating ... however if you are willing to supplement study by yourself, the practise questions and exams are sufficently indicative of the real exam.

Summary: Terrible book!!..do NOT buy till a second edition!
I am already MCP and had read many training kits, but this would be with no doubt the worst, i will list my impression about this book in terms of the many negatives and rare positives i found.

NEGATIVES:
*chapters are mixed up with lessons, and both are VERY poorly organized, with ambiguos titles for chapters(like instrumentation , interoperation)you will be very lucky if you could guess the contents based on the titles!
*Very poor editing , you find many copy and paste errors in code, duplicated figures and questions to chapters in wrong place.
*finally and MOST IMPORTANT, providing MISLEADING and WRONG information(confirmed after contacting authors).
*does NOT cover even 50% of exam, i had to go to MSDN and other resources.

POSITIVES
*you get 15% discount voucher for the exam.
*authors are aware of their mistakes and are striving to make a better edition.

I would suggest that you dont buy this book unless you are in a hurry for the exam and /or this book is your only choice(another TK is on its way out).

Summary: Sparkling good book, certainly worth buying!
With 11 years of experience in the field, in my opinion this guide is a top one. Harris has a clear -back to basics- style of writing which come along with some supporting drawings (most people intend to have visual learning capabilities) and fine examples and references.

You'll need certainly some experience in the field and some kind of overview about security topics but with some other additional material available in the field like that of Roberta Bragg and Krutz you'll pretty satisfied with this guide.

Rob Faber [MSCA, MCSE Server 2003]

Summary: Good book, but be careful.

Bottom line first: I read this book twice in 3 months (3 hours every single night), and passed the exam on the first try last month.

But to be honest with you, as soon as I finished taking the exam, I thought I failed it. www.cccure.org said this is a normal reaction for all exam takers since 25 out of 250 questions are experimental ones, but I'd like to warn you that questions on the real exam are COMPLETELY different from, and MUCH MUCH harder & longer, and more cryptic than the practice questions on this book.

The same can be said to any practice questions on any other books on CISSP exam (even those on the official CISSP book are not close enough). www.cccure.org has tons of free tough questions, but these are still shorter and easier than the real questions.

This book (as well as other similar books) says the exam focuses on the conceptual levels, but don't let this statement fool you; the reality is, *very* detailed conceptual levels. And the exam is designed to force you to think deeply and be creative, rather than simply output what you memorized. Learning the required materials of CBK domains in books is like buying beef, vegetables and milk, but taking the exam is like actually cooking what you never cooked offhand using the ingredients you bought; that's what I felt about the exam.

Although I'm thankful to this book and www.cccure.org, I still felt that I was somewhat lucky, and that I was extremely misled about the reality of the exam.

Although I enjoyed reading this book, readers should watch out for the following areas that are helplessly in need of being addressed in the next edition:

- numerous errors in practice questions on the CD.

(confusions that arise from these errors are not only
frustrating, but definitely dangerous)

- disorganized structures.

(the author often jumps from one topic to another within one
section, which should be organized into blocks of categories
to avoid confusion. I had to write notes and summary in my
own words and draw many tables and charts on margins of
every single page for myself to clear my understandings;
I felt as if I was writing a book myself :-)

- poor telecommunication section.

(if you're a newbie in network, I'd suggest you grab other
books on this topic after reading this book *twice*, and
pay a lot of attention to protocols in terms of
functionalities, pros and cons...)

This is still a good book despite my gripes above. Just proceed with caution in some areas. And all you have to do is to live with this book after work; take it with you to your bed, car, lunch, dinner, and even restroom (which is a great place to read, isn't it?!). And don't forget to hit as many questions as possible at www.cccure.org after reading this book twice. I'm a slow reader and my mother tongue is not English, so you may feel the real exam to be easier than I felt it, but reading the book from cover to cover twice, and taking many "difficult-level" questions at www.cccure.org should be a must for all exam takers. And be prepared for longer questions.

Oh, by the way, (ISC)2 says you can take a dictionary to your exam center, but I saw many foreign candidates having their dictionaries confiscated as their dictionaries were not "word-to-word" English dictionaries. Again, it has to be an English dictionary with simple non-descriptive translations. I didn't take mine, but it didn't matter anyway; you just don't have any time to look anything up there although you have 6 hours. And even if you think you have to do so, you'd better use it to tackle other questions. Time flies by like a roller coaster.

I hope this helps.

Summary: Great CISSP Resource
I havent completely read the book, but whatever i have gone through certainly seems good plus the questions on the CD and the broad coverage of different areas make it a good resource for CISSP prep

Summary: best book to pass the oca 10g exam
i buy this book together with sybex's book and have passed the oca exam with 87% score (less than what i expected though). i found this book easier to read and understand compared to sybex's book, and the many-but-short chapters works better for me. if you could only choose one book to pass the 1Z0-042 exam then this is definitely the best choice. but don't forget to practise what you read (although the book makes it looks so simple), you'll remember more by trying each exercise in this book.
Summary: Good OCP Preparation
I used this book to (sucessfully) prepare for the OCA exam. It is well structured and important points for the exam are specially highlighted. This makes the content memorable and easy to learn.

The review questions are pretty good. I recommend getting the question set of www.selftestsoftware.com, too. They are not exactly like in the exam (like TestKing) but representative.

I used this book and the SYBEX OCA preparation (OCA: Oracle 10g Administration I Study Guide (1Z0-042) by Chip Dawes) and found this one clearly superior.

Still, it is not perfect: There was some exam-relevant details missing, e.g. for data pump. So check with the selftest questions and get the missing information from the Oracle manuals on the net.
Summary: Best Book for Exam Preparation
I m really thankful to amazon.com to supply book, which is really good for exam preparation

Summary: Great book to prep for exam and use after
I went through the Microsoft class 2272 and read this book before taking the XP exam . The book does a great job covering topics which are not adequately discussed in the class (RIS, RIPrep, Sysprep, Overview of Active Directory and server side issues which MUST be considered when troubleshooting XP issues among others). I passed with a nice margin and the book continues to be a great reference tool. The CD included with the book is great as well, it contained two additional MS Press books (Ency. of Networking, and Ency. of Security, plus a Measure Up test). The Measure Up test is worth the price alone since it presents questions in a format which is VERY close to the actual MS test. Some typos throughout but overall very good.
Summary: Passed exam first time with 905, using this book.....
This book was my primary reference to pass this exam.

I have used XP Pro since 2002 and am fairly familiar with it. I picked up this book based on a number of reviews I read here. I agree with one reviewer who mentioned IIS was barely mentioned, he is correct on that score. WebDAV was never mentioned either.

The MeasureUP test prep software was pretty good. I found a good percentage of the questions from the software on the exam.

Good luck on the exam!

Summary: Good book
Taking the test which this study guide is focus to is a very important step before give any content's feedback (i'm still preparing myself for the test) But i will give my 1st impression about the book anyway.

Pros:
Very well organized book. Chapters and content are divided in small chunks of information (lessons). For busy people (like me) or those which like to do self study at own pace this is a big aid.

I like the writing style also. Not boring, not too technical altought you should have a previous SQL 2000 background if you want to take full advantage of this book.

I did like chapter 11, the backup and restore processes. This is a must for every SQL admin. and it is well covered. The same for the Maintenance Plan and Job topics (Ch 14)

The 15% off in the test price is a good bonus. You should consider this if you're in a low budget.

Cons or critics:
The test engine is an added value but... i don't know ... after taking a few custom tests ... i am not pretty sure about their content's difficulty. I mean, IMO, questions seems too easy for me. I've took a lot of Microsoft tests before (i'm MCSA) and i've never seen easy questions like these in most of them. You must read a lot and think well before mark an answer and i don't feel that when i'm taking this book's test engine. Do not misunderstand what i'm saying, a free Test Engine is a nice bonus, i just want to give a non parcial review. I'm a customer too and we must rely in good study sources to avoid test failures.

Chapter 5: just a brief T-SQL review; use a Sybex SQL 2000 Design book for better preparation or buy the Ben Forta book instead (ISBN: 0672325675), you won't regret and it will help you a lot.

Chapter 12: hey! what happened with the pics here? ... too much words and just a few pics for this topic. Fragmentation concepts are easier to understand when you see how they works; here's when drawings and pics enter into action.

Final comment.
Currently, this is the only book for this test in the market. Sybex and the others are still in press, so there are not much choices either but overall, is a good election anyway; easy to read and very well organized. Find a good PC or laptop, VMWARE or Virtual PC and that's all you need for your study track (SQL 2005 evaluation version is included)

Need extra info? Try SQL 2005 Stanek pocket book ...

UPDATED 7/26/2006:
I already have the new Sybex book for this test. And 'till now, what i've read so far ... i've not found it better than Solid's book. Some Sybex chapters are just a re impression of their old 70-228 book. I keep you informed ...

Summary: 2-in-1 training kit
These 2 extras alone is worth more than the price of this book: First, there is the 15% discount on MCP exams. This translates to about $15. Then, there is the practice test software with 295 questions which is very similar to other commercial practice tests (cost at least $59). NOTE: I bought this book from other site because this book was already available there a week earlier than here at Amazon. The price of this book in Amazon is about $8 lower.

This is a hard bound book (I'm very impressed of the cover design). The papers are white and of high quality.

The contents are organized by exam objectives (there is also a card you can tear from the book that outlines the exam objectives and tells you what chapter and lesson you will find the objective discussed in the book). Every lesson has its summary and review questions. Reading some lessons and browsing through the pages of the book, I believe this is a comprehensive study guide for this exam and is, by itself, sufficient to prepare you to pass the exam.

Summary: Easy Read, but NOT a One Stop Shop.
This book is overall a good book. Easy read. However, it can give you a false sense of security that you know enough when you don't because many topics are not covered with enough depth. Also the coverage for many processes is inclomplete. Some inputs, some outputs, or some tools and techniques are missing all over the map.
Bottom line: It's a useful book, but do not count on it alone.

Summary: This is what a PMP Prep Book Should Be!
After studying Rita Mulcahy's "PMP Exam Prep" book for months, I found myself so frustrated and confused that I started looking for other material. I went online and found the positive reviews of Andy Crowe's "The PMP Exam: How to Pass on Your First Try" and bought the book, and I am SO glad I did!

What took months to understand reading the overly-complex RMC book became crystal clear when I read Crowe's book. Crowe organizes his material well, and at the beginning of each chapter he conveniently defines the material's difficulty, memorization level and importance on the exam in terms of "High, Medium or Low". Each page has a tab on the edge that identifies what process you are in, so if you find yourself deep in concentration and suddenly wondering, "Hey am I reading about Quality Assurance or Quality Control?" there's a large indicator right in front of you to help.

On a purely mechanical level, Crowe went out of his way to make sure this book was organized to help you study. I really appreciated that.

The material itself is excellent. As some have pointed out, it is a little slim in some areas, but the book's purpose is to help you pass the exam and in this regard, Crowe admits that he glosses over some items that tend to appear less than others. I recommend you read this book and refer back to the PMBOK and one additional study guide whenever you are confused or need additional detail.

I did find that PTA (Point of Total Assumption) was covered here, where it wasn't covered in the other material I used. I didn't find any major shortcomings in the coverage of the book.

I have read criticisms of the book's grammar and spelling. I did find a few (under 5) spelling errors, but I honestly appreciated the "big print" type and simplistic words. The material covered on the PMP Exam is pretty complex and tough. And too many PMP education providers seem to think they have to mimic that complexity and difficulty to teach the material. It was incredibly refreshing to find a book that actually went out of its way to make the material simple.

The book was also an easy and fast read, unlike all of the other materials I found. I read the first half of the book (up through the end of the "Time" chapter) in one day, and the second half in another day. I then went through the book with a highlighter and re-read it, in 2 days time again, highlighting all the key points. During each of these passes, I took the questions at the end of each chapter. Finally I skimmed the material several times, only glossing over the highlighted points. Doing this I could flip through the entire book in a day. I did that twice. Finally, two days before the exam I took the entire 200 question test at the end of the book, scoring 90%.

The only suggestion I have to improve this book would be to make the exam questions more difficult, so that they more closely mimic the tough, brutal questions I encountered on the PMP exam.

The free material at the Velociteach website was great. I signed up for the online site two weeks prior to sitting for the exam. The online quizzes were good, but limited. The real benefit for me was the classroom slides which presented the material very well. Even though it was mostly a rehash of what was found in the book, it was slightly different material, presented very well, using repetitive images and phrases that really helped key concepts stick in my head. (After going online, I easily memorized word for word the definition of a "Baseline" as they always referred back to the same images and the same words on certain key points. I found this GREAT for learning!)

I took the PMP Exam a few days ago and passed fairly well, thanks completely to Andy Crowe's book. Crowe explains early on in the book how much weight each process group carries on the exam. Calculating my scores in each process group (Initiation, Planning, Executing, M+C, Closing and Professional Responsibility) x the weight each group carries on the exam, I arrived at an estimate of 75% for my score on the overall exam, passing is approximately 61%. My weakest area was in Initiating by the way, which surprised me. Note that I took the final exam in the book shortly before the exam and scored 90%. I would recommend that you get to an 85% or 95% level on this particular book's questions prior to taking the exam.

I am very pleased with my score on the exam and with this book and Velociteach in general. This is my PMP preparation book of choice and I highly recommend it to anyone who is studying for their PMP credential.
Summary: Thanks Andy
This book is a valuable guide to PMBOK. I Passed after reading it along with the PMBOK. The PMBOK is of course the bible of PMP exam, but this book is extremely pleasing to read, concise, and geared to highlight important concepts from an exam view, and also relate to the overall highlevel "architecture" of the processes.

The only thing to be aware is that, in certain areas, I felt topics were inadequately covered, and that is where the PMBOK comes in.
