Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A Start It's a simple book, and a quick read. Do not read it without following up with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and don't read LOTR without starting here. You'll breeze through this fun and easy book in no time, but it will give you valuable insight into the real meat of the story before you even begin it. If you've never read fantasy, this is also a great place to start! Summary: A Joy For Collectors! This is a great version of "The Hobbit" to get as it's likely to last the test of time. The binding is first class and the beautiful covers and illustrations within plus the fonts are a nice size for ease of reading make this simply a joy to behold. This is one that I can foresee getting passed down from generation to generation as this story is timeless too. Although Tolkien's style isn't as easy to get used too as say his comtemporary, C.S. Lewis' works, "The Hobbit" is still a fun read and is a lot easier to digest than his later work "The Lord of the Rings." Recommended. Summary: The Hobbit This book really is a genius story, although, if yur someone like me you have to wonder, with the way Tolkien writes this story, how did he know when and how all this happened? Anyways, as some might have thought his style of writing, odd, I thought it entertaining, he kade it seem like he was telling you, you sitting there reading this loooong book, what's going on. I swear at some points I could here him telling it to me. It's just such a wonderful way to write. As for the ending, although odd, for those who haven't read it yet don't read this next part! I still wonder how such a magnificent dragon, as described in the book, is killed so easily! When I started reading the end finally) I couldn't put it down, so much happens in the last 20 pages, you have to wonder how he crammed all that story in there. Seeing as it took me forever to read, I liked how in some chapters he would take you infor the detailed begining of one of their many adventures, and then in the last 2 pages of the book would sumarize what happenened to the gruop in the end! I'm more into realistic fiction, but I have a few exceptions here and there, this is fantastic, if you have a lot of reading time on your hands, then this is a good book for you. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The fountain pen bible This is it. If you buy only one book on fountain pens, or if you are serious about fountain pen collecting, this is THE book to get. Unfortunately, it is Really expensive. Look around for a used copy using the usual suspects on the Web. The photos are great and the captions clearly identify each pen shown. Numerous non-US pen companies are written about and many pens are pictured here and nowhere else (in other standard pen ID books). Highly recommended. Summary: Buying this book enhanced the joy of pen collecting! I have always admired Lambrou's book, 'Fountain Pens of the World', but could not justify the price -- after all the cost of this book could go towards another fountain pen -- I WAS WRONG!! I wished I bought my copy years ago, it would have saved me so much money in buying pens that were not exactly the model that the seller described (going to a few markets/pen shows and especially on-line auctions). The history of pens from around the world is well documented. The pen manufacturers are grouped in chapters by country. Every pen is life size. More than 2,300 pens are shown and the color representation is great. Even a Parker Snake, Aztec, Swastika, Forget-me-not and many, many more I just dream about! Only gripe -- no price list, but Lambrou states that people can abuse the information as the price list is only valid at the time of print. To date, I 've yet to see any other book as well put together's as this one. Don't use false economy like I did. Buy this book as soon as you can -- it gives many, many happy hours of pen collecting and reading! Summary: Buying this book saved me making mistakes in collecting! Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Great old fashioned adventure I loved this book as a child. I remember having it read to me when I was six. Of course, I was oblivious to the Christian theology running through it at the time, and in later books some of the references to other races is questionable. But this first book remains a classic and an innovator. If you enjoyed it try reading Lightsleep by Matthew S. Batham, a new fantasy about a bratty boy who finds himself in another world. Summary: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by: C.S Lewis This book is about four children Peter,Lucy,Edmund, and Susan. They come from London. But it all changes when they go in the Professor's Wardrobe. They go in the land of Narnia where it is always winter but no Christmas. When the evil witch kidnaps their brother Edmund, they know that they have to save Narnia to save their brother so they do with the help of all the pure creatures of Narnia, and the help of the legendary Lion Aslan. With all that help they retrieved their brother Edmund killed the Evil Witch, and they all became royalty to the land of Narnia. I liked this book cause it was very exciting, and it had a lot of tension. It was exciting cause the war that they were fighting looked in the odds of the evil witch, but in the end they won. It was full of tension because I saw the movie and I knew there was going to be a battle so I was waiting for the battle. I really liked the part when the good guys raided the Evil witches camp. This part was good cause the good guys snatched Edmund back and they started to get feared of the bad guys. I think that this author did a very good job with this book I loved it, and I have no suggestions what so ever. Summary: What a cute story! I really liked this story and both of my children have enjoyed reading it as well. The only reason I didn't give it a full five stars is simply because I feel the story leaves too many unanswered questions. Now, I realize that this is sort of part of a series and that some of those questions are answered in other books, but I walked away from the book with a bit of an "unfinished" feeling. Oh, the imagery though - I can literally SEE many of the images in my head as I'm reading along as though I am watching a movie. I definitely think this book is a classic fantasy book and is great for younger readers who love to read too! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great book, contrary to what some over-analytical people say! I was truly shocked to see the feedback rating for this book! I first read this book 7 years ago. It was a very tough time, and it had a large impact on my life. It gave me a new way of looking at the world around me at a time in which I really needed it. There are a few idiots that dismiss the book entirely, and as mentioned by a prior feedback, those are the negative people that the book refers to. The rest of negative feedback is by people who acknowledge the importance and greatness of the underlying message in the book (the insights), but harp on how "poorly" it is written. Those people must be your average too-good for everyone else, elite, literary type. Take this book for the meaning and spiritual wisdom it contains, and ignore the people that are proofreading it like it is a dissertation for an English phd degree. It changed my life, and it can for you too. In a world that has so much negative news everyday, it is great to find a read that lifts you back up. This book can either supplement some people's conventional religious thinking/beliefs, or offer others a possible alternative to traditional thinking and seems to help make life just make sense. Summary: Crackpot pseudoscience See page 97 for Redfield's lyrically written insight into how he can see a quarter moon on his side of the earth while folks on the other side of the earth see a full moon. You'd think that someone who believes in astrology would at least get his basic astronomy right, but I suppose nonsense begets nonsense. Summary: Typical 90s Nowadays a book like this wouldn't sell the way it did back then, but in the spiritual "feeling" era that was the 90s it did. The book is not bad though, although it's very new age, pretentious and bombastic. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great Pinball book with high quality pictures You can't go wrong picking this one up. A must for any pinball enthusiast or beginner. Summary: A Must Have For A Pinhead This is a wonderful work of Pinball Book Art. I checked out this book from my local library and it is a must have. The book is heavy and very well made. The photos are very detailed as well. The book takes a certain aspect of the game such as scoring and breaks that parts of the game down, while the next chapter may focus on pinball sound. The book has so much information in it about history, features, and rare pinball features. A book of this size is bound to have a few mistakes and this book has a few small mistakes, but those are very minor and this is a very detailed work and there is no way one man can know it all about pinball. If you enjoy the game of pinball, you need to check out this book. It will not show you how to repair or maintain the game, its focus is history about the game and its evolution over time. I hope you enjoy this book and also keep enjoying playing the wonderful game of pinball. Summary: Casi igual que jugar una partida de pinball Muy buen libro sobre pinball. He recordado aquellos pinballs con los que empez a jugar a principio de los 70. Summary: |
| Virgin Earth: A Novel
Publisher: Touchstone |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Superb Author I am a great fan of author Philippa Gregory, and she did not disappoint me in VIRGIN EARTH. I had not realized that this novel is, in fact, a sequel; certainly, the story and the characters stand alone. Though Gregory began her writing career in the 20th century and continues now, into the 21st, I am convinced that she somehow is living in England, c. 1600, so thoroughly is she steeped in the rhythms of that time. Her hero here, John Tradescant, is a man of conflicted loyalties, loving England but excited by its American colony of Virginia, serving King Charles I as his gardener but not desiring to be his soldier, passionate about a Native American squaw in the Virginia colony while blessed with a wonderful wife at home in England. Those were difficult times in which Gregory places this tale, and the great proof of her success as a storyteller is how engaged the reader becomes in her fictional characters, all the while knowing the ultimate outcome the conflict on which it hinges; to wit, Cromwell's Roundhead Revolution. The part of the novel that deals with the earliest settlement of Virginia is fascinating. Gregory makes it clear that the United States is a country that was founded on turmoil, strife and cruelty. The suffering she describes, of both slaves and Native Americans, as well as the deathly struggles of the colonists, all are appalling--and these are issues that rarely are examined in full. Philippa Gregory remains one of the finest authors in the English language. Her fans will be well-pleased by VIRGIN EARTH. Summary: Great Background Setting for her Characters This is historical fiction at its finest. It is the second volume in the two volume set on the Tradescant family. They live in post-Elizabeth England when the Civil War is about to break out. While this story concerns the life of John Tradescant the Younger and his troubles observing the court of King Charles I. His observations convey to the reader what life as a low level observer must have been like during those times at that place. John then leaves his wife in England while he travels to Virginia where he has another love in the form of an Indian girl. I find the background of the book well researched and well written so that you indeed get a feeling for the way life was in those times. To a certain extent I did not like John. He was torn between two women and unfair to either. He was torn between two Governments and chose to switch his loyalties quickly when trouble appeared. Summary: "When a man is ready to promise himself to us he finds in us a loyal master." Gregory's sequel to Earthly Joys is a continuation of the Tradescant family saga, gardeners to the Kings of England for generations, John Tradescant, Jr. off to the New World to avoid political tensions and to gather fresh varieties of plants for the botanical collection at the Ark, where the family displays flora and fauna, treasures and curiosities from all over the world. After the death of his beloved wife from the plague, John leaves behind two children, Johnnie and Frances, in the care of his elderly father. It is 1642 and almost two decades of John's life will be riddled with indecision and controversy, a man who cannot find a home for his affections or his loyalties, both continents embroiled in territorial wars. In Virginia, the settlers cling tenaciously to their new land, unable to sustain themselves without goods delivered from English ships. Stubbornly they plant their crops, failing to learn the basic survival lessons of the indigenous people, determined that the English way become the law of the land. In England, Charles I is fighting for his place in a changing society. Married to Marie Henriette, sister to the King of France, Charles' attentions to the Queen's papist beliefs are the cause of great unease in the Protestant country. Charles refuses to accept the authority of Parliament, spurred to injudicious alliances through his wife's advice, while his citizens rise up against a king who taxes them beyond reason, indulging his excesses and those of favored nobles, refusing to hear the will of the people. While in Virginia, John has met a young Powhatan, whom he plans to marry, but on returning to England, his intentions are forgotten in the chaos of civil war and his father's death. John accepts a marriage of convenience arranged by his father, Hester Pooks an exemplary stepmother and caretaker of the family treasures as John returns to Virginia to avoid service to Charles I. There he begins a double life, taking a Powhatan bride, accepted as one of the People, only to fail when he refuses to take up arms against the English. For those who enjoyed Earthly Joys, filled with the same love of gardens and plants stewarded by the Tradescants, history dominates, the simple pleasures of dedication to service replaced by the need for each man to claim his own birthright, reshaping the beliefs of centuries. Social upheaval tears the fabric of the Tradescant family asunder, John particularly affected by the duality of his life and an inability to own either past or present. For this reason, Tradescant is as uncomfortable and uneasy as the mid-17th century he inhabits, his character fraught with conflict. He does service to no one, save his work, mired in contradictions. Aside from the noble Powhatans, none of these characters are particularly likeable, their lack of nobility reflecting their circumstances, shredded by the attrition of war and insecure political ideology. John and Hester face an uncertain future, having survived their marriage and civil war, mending the remnants of lives driven by expediency at the price of joy. Luan Gaines/ 2006. Summary: |
