Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Long Awaited Library This is for the true C&H fan. It is the canon. It is not meant to be casually perused; these are very heavy books more like a reference library. They are beautifuuly printed. The individual strips are set so they appear to be cut from the newspapers. The dates of each strip are shown on the bottom of each page. It is a great way to watch Bill emerge and watch and C&H define their characters. As sad as I was to see Bill stop the strip, I am happy that it did end on a high note. The last cartoon is wonderful and, as Bill says, they are out there still looking for adventure. Capt Tom I can't recommend this set enough! Summary: Brilliant Beautifully bound and presented. Three hefty volumes of Calvin and Hobbes printed on quality paper, bound in hardback volumes, and boxed. A 'must' for all fans of this lovable pair. Summary: The Complete Calvin & Hobbes This was bought as a Father's Day Gift for my husband who was absolutely thrilled with it. It is the ultimate Calvin & Hobbes collection & anyone who has enjoyed Bill Watterson's cartoons would be delighted to have this as the crown jewel in their collection. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A Family Tragicomic Loved this. My reading group will be reading this one!! She's bright, intelligent and I hope we can expect more from Alison Bechdel. Was very surprised when I received this book to see that it was in "comic form." The illustrations were superb as well as the content of the novel. Summary: short but sweet If I hadn't read Art Spiegelman's "MAUS: A SURVIVORS TALE" I probably wouldn't have read Alison Bechdel's "Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic." I was curious to see if Bechdel's execution of the "graphic novel" was as successful as Spiegelman's and in my opinion she doesn't just match his success she actually comes out ahead. When comparing artwork Spiegelman wins because he had the hard task of getting people to see a human tragedy using a stereotypic group of animals as the people. It shouldn't have worked but it did. Where Bechdel comes out the winner is in the area of interest in subject matter. By this I mean that Spiegelman wrote on a subject that is of interest to a lot of people but Bechdel wrote about something that probably appeals to a smaller slice of society, in my opinion a much harder sell. Many readers may not be interested in the relationship between a father and daughter who are both gay. Yet "Fun Home" is as compelling and important as the Spiegelman book. It too is a "survivors tale." One that shows that Bechdel knows that the long stretches of everyday life that get lost between the drama are as important as the drama in defining a life. In her attention to detail she shows us real people. And because they suffer alone they are much harder to see. Summary: Breathtaking I have been a fan of Ms. Bechdel for years, and I have collected all the books in her Dykes To Watch Out For series. I wasn't sure how she'd handle her autobiography, and I was pleasantly surprised to see she drew it in comic form, the same as her DTWOF series. Even for those who are not already fans, this is a must-read. It's funny, touching, sad and poignant, and I'm sure I'll read it over and over again. Summary: |
| Flight Volume 2

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: solid creativity Flight #2 is a great comics anthology that avoids the usual boring comic book cliches. There is great art here as well as intriguing story telling. For years the comics industry has claimed that comics are for adults, too, yet have served up a steady stream of embarrassing teenage sexual and power fantasies. With the advent of books like "Flight" the promise of publishers actually fostering creative stories for intelligent adults is at least partially fullfilled. I hope they continue. Summary: Warm and fuzzy without being nauseating I picked up "Flight Volume Two" at my library because it looked kind of cool. As soon as I started reading it I was totally absorbed and had to put it down on purpose in order to save some for later. The stories are kind of fairy tale-like, sweet and refreshing but not cheesy and nauseating. This isn't usually my thing, I guess I can be sort of grounded and my literary tastes reflect that. However, this book definately transcends that and appeals to the childlike, unjaded dreamer in me. Yeah, read it! Read especially if your sad or grumpy. Summary: First Time Buyer of a Graphic/Comic Book After discovering Kazu Kibuishi's comic, Copper, I found out that there was a book he was editing called Flight and that the second volume was coming out soon. About six months later I was at a Barnes and Noble and I remembered that they were distributing the Flight books. I picked one up, my first graphic book of anything I've ever bought, and I love it. Its a joy to see stories this interesting with art so beautiful. The art is the main reason I bought it because, but the stories stand on their own. Kazu's own entry in the book is a rather warming tale involving a young girl and boy who are facing seperation. Other stories involve cities built on hovering tram systems, planes, trains (in beautiful colored pencil, no less), and bicycles. Expect monsters, stories without dialogue, robots, and Flight. Beautiful and meaningful, I recommend this book to anyone who loves comics and maybe grew up with the art of Bill Watersons' Calvin and Hobbes, as well as anyone who has ever secretly wished that books for adults had vibrant illustrations to enjoy along with the text. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Amazing. period. The Sin City series is great. The artwork is original, there is a lot of action and it is fun. That is all I am going to write. There are plenty of reveiws that will go in a lot more depth about how and why this series is just so amazing. I will not say anymore. All I will say is that I highly reccomend it. Summary: Almost Perfect There is no other way to describe sin city other than perfect. The books themselves warrant a full five stars, yet the lack of an enclosure makes the books harder to store. Amazon needs to include a holder so people dont have to spend the 180 neccessary for both hardcover packs. Summary: Great collection This collection is a must have. I was a fan of the movie, and when i bought the special edition i read the included novel "the hard goodbye." Well it wasnt but a week before i ordered this set. I shopped around for other deals, and found out that buying them individually is much more expensive (plus they dont have the cool nancy spine design). This set was upwards of 35 dollars cheaper than any other complete collections i saw. I highly recommend this item, the quality is great, and the tales uncannied. Justin Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: Hated it I feel the dust-jacket description is inaccurate, if not misleading. It would lead you to believe that the life of the Stones is going relatively well up until the point that the 14 year old daughter is a victim of "violence". That would not seem to be the case when you consider the father's past and what it means to him in the present. The mother has secrets of her own that suggests family life is not so peachy. And the daughter was engaging in negative behaviors before the supposed act of violence. The cover would also seem to imply that the father will react dramatically to what happens to the daughter but it didn't read that way at all to me. His past didn't seem to interfere with how he dealt with the situation, even though the story continues to suggest that his past is surging up and taking over. It feels odd to be so disappointed in how well he actually seemed to handle the situation. The book is filled with a lot of generalizations that showcase some of the uglier behaviors of todays youth, couples, individuals. It jumps about, recounting trivial information that really doesn't lend anything at all to the story. Much of the drama is nothing but filler that goes nowhere. There's a lot of build-up that falls flat. The comic portion doesn't clarify anything, rather it only tells what is being told in words throughout the book. It's a cheap gimick which was actually the only thing that caused me to have interest in the book. The only reason for giving this book 2 stars, instead of 1, is because I actually read long enough to finish the book. Summary: Good Read, but Unrealistic I'm a Jodi Picoult fan too, and I loved Saving Faith. FOr me, however, this book failed because the characters didn't feel real, somehow. Usually, her books win high praise because every reader hears the story and thinks to themselves, "Yes, I could see this happening. I could see something like this happening to me. I could be this person -- and if I were, I wonder how I would react." However, this book contains characters such as: an out of control fourteen year old girl who has apparently had multiple sexual partners, a clueless stay at home dad who stays home and draws comic books all day and apparently has no clue what his ONE child is up to, a mother who teaches English literature at a Maine college (Bates? Colby? help me out here) and also sleeps with her graduate students (one of whom is a drug dealer). This is an upper middle class suburban family, apparently. Strange, I don't know any families like this. Maybe I'm just lucky. But I think that's why it had a "soap opera" feel to me -- It felt more like one of those movies you would see on the Estrogen Channel there. The ones you don't expect to provide any real insights into human nature, but just to entertain you for an evening. The problem is that those of us who know and love Jodi Picoult's work know that she's capable of so much more. Write us another one, Jodi! Make it a good one! Summary: Give her a couple of points for trying something different... I tend to enjoy Picoult's novels--they're usually an effortless read, an interesting premise, kind of like a nice light custard. This one is different, much darker and not very original in terms of basic plot. It made for a boring read. However, I did appreciate her building upon the comic book idea, a distinctly masculine element (although the "hidden message" was hokey), and incorporating Dante's circles of hell into the scheme of her story. The latter was food for thought--is there a hierarchy of sin? Summary: |
| The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

| ISBN: 0763625892 List Price: $18.99 Amazon Price: $12.34 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A Journey of a Lifetime.. This book can be read over and over again by children and adults. As the reader grows their background knowledge grows. This book can take the reader to many different and unique places based on their own experiences. I am a 4th grade teacher and am using it with a group of students in a small book club. I think Kate Dicamillo has done it once again. The way she describes her characters, their thoughts, feelings and experiences the reader can not help but get in to the book. This is a keeper to be read year after year. Connections can be made to ones' own life as well as others. Great mentor book for the entire class. Summary: Terrific youth book Edward Tulane learns a very valuable lesson during his miraculous journey. He learns to deeply love others. This book reminded me of the Velveteen Rabbit and Black Beauty. I felt that I knew each character who entered Edward's life. I look forward to sharing it with my children. Summary: Weird but excellent I've never been a DiCamillo fan, so I read this one reluctantly. I was very pleasantly surprised. It was a beautifully told story without being sentimental. Sure it had some odd moments, but so do all good fairy tales, plus it had a clear message: don't take love for granted. Too "complex" or "violent" for kids? No way. It is an outstanding modern fairy tale in the same vein as Anderson and Grimm. Summary: |
