Summary: Great introduction to art
I just puchased the latest edition of Artforms which includes the CD-ROM with interactive explanations on elements of art. Artforms is a great introduction to art and art history for those who have always wanted to understand how to look at art and interpret it for themselves. Over half the book is dedicated to elements and principles of art and craftsmanship. I use this book in training my art museum volunteers so that they have a clear understanding of why some works of art have strong visual impact while others do not. I like how the book uses a mix of artwork from various time periods, media and cultures to explain the elements and principles. Far too many art/art history books become a history of painting, and Artforms represents a variety of art forms other than 2D. The history portion of the book is a gloss of art history, but good enough for someone just delving into art. The book is easy to read, relatively jargon-free and has a nice glossary at the end. I wish the CD had more information on it that you could use in a classroom setting, projecting it on an overhead, but that is my instructor point of view. For someone studying at home it is quite nice. To sum up, the book is so good I now own two editions and will continue to recommend it to people who want to understand how to look at art.

This book is a virtual bible for writers. The small size is a testament to what the book is about: mincing your words. Strunk is a genius, a true wordsmith, and if I could discipline myself to follow 75% of what he says I'd already be an author. This book is worth every penny and more. Summary: Worth reading and Saving !
This is one of the books that I will keep and re-read. Very well written and inspiring. I LOVED IT !! Made me "want" to write and made me feel that I could actually write something worth reading.

Summary: Depressing
I found this book very depressing. Anne Lamott's constant self-deprecation throughout the book caused me to really doubt myself as well. I know she is doing it to show that she's human just like the rest of us, but I think she can show that without hating on herself every chance she gets (saying the 9-year-old version of herself looked like a neurotic cat woman, etc.) despite what she says about how you shouldn't do that. It's like hanging around with a bunch of anorexic models, it gets to you.

This is not a good book for people who are not sure they are writers. I am not a writer but I am interested in writing and I would very much like to write fiction but I have a lot of trouble writing authentically. Lamott sends the message that "As long as you're a writer, as long as you're in our secret little club, everything will be okay!"

Summary: Self-Deprecating Writers, Read This!
If you're too hard on yourself as a writer, this book is definitely for you. Even if you're not, this book will encourage, inspire, and jumpstart your writing. Lamott is funny and insightful, but what I love is that she pushes you to be gentle with yourself as a writer (writers tend to be overly critical and pessimistic about their work). If you're ever faced with writer's block, this book is a must have. You'll laugh your way back to the page.

Summary: The Best Reference
The Chicago Manual of Style is an editor's dream. This comprehensive and easy to use reference is a must-have for anyone who makes their living in the realm of language.

Summary: Oh, I Hate This Book, But --
I hate this book. Can I say it clearer? Following its detailed formatting for bibliographies is challenging, but I need it. I don't like that either. What can I say? It is making me a better writer, and assisting me in my ability to persuade publications to print my work. It helps me earn money.

Like the Associated Press book, it is an absolute requirement for any writer serious about presenting his work professionally and with a consistent style.

Keep both Chicago and the AP on your desk if you write grants, white papers, marketing communications, press releases, feature articles. You get the idea. The only kind of professional business writer who may not need "The Chicago Manual of Style" might be a pure ad copywriter. The rest of us, even those us who are hip and modern, and work largely online, will not escape from it.

More academic publications require Chicago. More journalistic publications require AP. See? You need them both. In fact, you'll need several other style manuals if you make a living (or intend to) as a writer and/or editor. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. (Look! I used Chicago already. Notice the use of commas in a series.)

This is not a book I can say, "It is difficult to use. Buy its competitor." There is only one "Chicago Manual of Style." You will learn the structure quickly enough.

Buy this book. Hate it, but in an appreciated way.

Summary: Insufficient but requisite!
If you write or publish regularly, you'll need to devise addendums to the AP Guide. A short list might evolve into your own style guide, since the AP may not cover abbreviations you commonly use, for example. But this guide is indispensible prior to (or in lieu of) having your own guide (a monstrous task).

Summary: Incomplete
There's no rules for title pages, no examples of manuscript pages, no rules for pagination. It doesn't even tell you if the reference list belongs on a separate page or what its heading looks like. I consider these glaring omissions, particularly if you are expected to use pure APA and have no departmental style guide (like me). This book is basically a glorified guide to citation and syntactic rules. Avoid it and pay the extra five bucks for the complete book. Getting the cheap book as some kind of protest won't signficantly hurt the APA and it will just make things harder for you.

Summary: Good book, lacking in visual references
While this is a great condensation of the main rules needed to write in APA style, this book lacks one major thing -- the practical examples of how to apply APA style in a document or manuscript.

The book would be greatly enhanced if in future editions the editors added the examples that are found in the full APA guidelines handbook.
