Summary: The bible of pediatric surgery.
This two-volume textbook is the definitive reference book for pediatric surgery as practiced in the U. S. and Canada. As a pediatric surgeon, I use it frequently to refresh myself on the more complicated or unusual cases that I encounter. In addition, it is a good source of material for preparing educational presentations for other health care professionals. Every pediatric surgeon or resident in a pediatric surgery residency training program should own this book.

That said, this book is perhaps a bit too much for the general surgery resident or medical student in the middle of a busy pediatric surgery rotation. He or she might do better with Principles of Pediatric Surgery, a single-volume textbook covering the essentials of the subject, also published by Mosby. This other book would probably also best serve other nonsurgical pediatric physicians for pediatric surgery reference purposes.

Summary: Very nice text
Very nice text covering pediatric surgery. Covers a multitude of topics w/ good explanations and well drawn pictures outlining the key points of the operation. More oriented to the actual surgery, would recommend something like Ashcraft for more in depth discussion of pathophysiology.
Summary: Pediatric Surgery
This is the new edition of the "classic" textbook of Pediatric Surgery. It is the most comprehensive text available on the subject, a must for all practicing pediatric surgeons and aspiring pediatric surgeons. Perhaps a bit too comprehensive for non-pediatric surgeons looking for a simple reference book to keep on their shelf. Nevertheless, even in its fifth edition, this remains the "bible" of Pediatric Surgery.

Summary: Brain Stem should be the title...
This is a remarkable, fun, scary forensics forray and a forray into the madness not only of one maniac but many, and the madness of our law enforcement systems, especially the prison system which allows a crazoid like Manson to deliver his rantings on his website to potentially "poison" young minds. This is cutting edge stuff and recalls to mind themes Walker wrote about in his first Edge book, Cutting Edge, in which it is noted anyone with a PC or a Mac today can and does often set him or herself up as a demi-god or a conduit from God. Walker always deals with complex issues, and perhaps this is why his readers are so loyal to him. They know with each of his books they will get into meaty issues, and this is no soap opera as with so many other forensics titles that fall far more into the category of romance or as i said soap opera. I liken Walker's books to a TV drama that you CAN'T sleep or blink through or step away to make a sandwich, or drop the ball, because everything in the drama matters. There are surprises on every page. There is action on every page. As for the person calling herself traffic cop...for a traffic cop to be telling Mr. Walker he does not know anything about forensics, well that is crazy, isn't it?? Suffice to say that this book is a TEN. And don't miss FleshWar, and Mr. Walker's Geoffrey Caine novels on Fiction Wise now, and the return of the Chicago ME Dean Grant on Fiction Wise as well. But most of all don't miss his City for Ransom.
Summary: Grave Instinct
The story was typically spun with Walker's usual aplomb and finess. The characters progresses futher along that usual and you are left to wonder whether Jessica really is, after all this time, going to give it up. I hope not. But Walker may be tiring of the character for a while at least. I have all the books of the series and have read them more than once. This tale is one of my favorites>
Summary: I Agree with Harriet --Doesn't Get Any Better
Grave Instinct is a huge roller-coaster ride from start to finish. It begins at lightning speed and just gets faster from there. Those who can't follow Walker's complex sentences need to go back to school. His style is similar to Martin Cruz Smith -- Gorky Park. He's closer to Faulkner than to Hemmingway. So you don't find a lotta easy sentences and you can't go out for a snack until the scene is finished, but the payoff is amazing. My favorite author and I can't wait to jump into his Absolute Instinct and his new series City for Ransom.

Summary: Wasted potential....
I'm glad I picked this book up from a used book store and did not pay full price. I have previously enjoyed the Jessica Coran books, but this one went way off the tracks. It had all the basic elements of a great crime novel, but Walker has distracted the reader with irrelevant trivia surrounding the location.

Walker must have had a brief trip to London and got caught up in the fact that the US and UK are "two countries divided by a common language". He wastes half the book explaining the language and cultural differences, so he must have developed a personal fascination and preoccupation with it. I say brief visit, because there are lots of factual errors. All of this totally detracts from the main purpose of reading crime novels - the Mystery. He has failed to create a real suspense that draws the reader into it.

I have come close to giving up on reading this book several times. I am only 60% of the way through, and it may yet end up in the garbage before I get to the last chapter. Reading the other reviews here, it would appear that we Brits come down heavier on the negative side (I have spent half my life on each side of "the Pond"). I wonder why? :-)

The comparison to Patricia Cornwell is very relevant - she went way off the rails in her latter books too.
Summary: Good read
This is the second book of the Instinct" series I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story is good it is not overly gruesome and the plot keeps twisting back and forth to keep you on the edge of your seat till the last few pages. After reading this I ordered 2 more of the books in the series. I would also recomend Unnatural Instinct as a follow up to this book. Jessica Coran kicks butt.
Summary: Absolute and Utter Waste of Paper, Time and Money!
I found this book on a discount rack for a dollar. That should have been my first clue. What got me to buy it was a Clive Cussler comment, "Walker is Masterful." Well, Clive's books have been going downhill, so maybe I shouldn't have placed stock in his comment.

Amateurish would be a compliment for this writer, who displays from almost the first page his utter lack of understanding of the subject matter and a total lack of research into his chosen main location, London. Inaccuracies and errors abound (I found his reference to Sherlock Holmes living at 21 Baker Street to be particularly amusing). It looks like he bought a tourist book of London and freely quoted from it in order to flesh out his locations and descriptions. He used a phrasebook to get his London expressions right, and when he needed to fill out a chapter he just spent four pages defining English colloqialisms. By the way, Mr. Walker, using the word "bloody" this or that is particularly insulting in England, comparable to using the "F" word in America. If Sharpe used it that frequently around Jessica, he was being an unfeeling and insensitive cad to a visitor he was trying to get friendly with. The author also has no time sense, skipping merrily from morning to afternoon to evening with no continuity.

As for his lead character, Dr. Jessica Coran, it is obvious that Mr. Walker hasn't had a date with a woman in years. He handles his title character hamhandedly, and has her make stupid, loutish and suicidal decisions that would get her drummed out of the Mayberry Police Department by Barney Fife himself, let alone be a member of the FBI. Her personality is oafish and insulting, and she displays a total lack of compassion and intelligence. Let me give you a clue, Dr. Coran. I knew from his first appearance who the killer was, and only a blind, stupid idiot would have missed it. In addition, never go into a dark, unexplored cavern without backup and with your prime suspects both ahead of you and behind you. You deserved what you got in the cavern. I wish you'd paid for your stupidity with your life. It would have ended this truly banal series of books.

The book's supporting characters are shallow and unfulfilled. The relationship between Shape and Copperwaite takes wild swings even before their conflict. Their use of nicknames is inconsistent and confusing, with the reader never really getting a handle on their relationship.

I also checked out the author's web site, which looks like it was made by a seventeen-year-old who has seen too many episodes of "Tales from the Crypt". A truly low-class web site that proves that you get what you pay for; obviously not much in this case.

I've thrown this book away (a first for me) so that no on else will ever be in the least tempted to read it.

Summary: Fantastic Forensicf Caper Read
This book blew me away from the first sentence to the last. I can only tell you that it is for smart readers, readers who love a surprise at every turn and action on every page. Walker's way of writing is absolutely visual and clean, yet literary at the same time. Every sentence is crisp and clear, and he never confuses you or loses you; it is as if he reaches out from behind the book, takes you by the hand and guides you through, and at the roughest, scariest moments, he's still got hold of your hand...or is it your mind. This book literally snatched me up from the get-go and never let me go or let me down as in so many books when you have figured out everything half-way through and the rest becomes a stupid soap opera filled with drama better saved for your moma. I am on to Walker's new series now and it is amazing that one who writes so well about current law enforcement and evil so deliciously can do the same in another entirely different time period. What Walker does with researched subjects is to make them compelling whether is is forensics or the streets of Chicago in 1893 or phrenology. Love this author, love this book. It's another keeper that will not see the inside of a used bookstore for sure.
Summary: Absolutely Wonderfully Scary
This is the most chilling book I have ever read, and as it is about a killer taking spines for his art, I had to pass it along to my chiropractor, and Dr. M. loved it as much as I did! Great book for pure pleasure and entertainment, and so well written. Anyone giving it a one or two star just must be foul-in-mood or jealous. It is a tremendous read. Can't say enugh. Walker does things in his books that no one else can dream of.
Summary: Walker's Instinct is Absolute
The best forensic series I know of, and this the 11th in the series is absolutely right on. Mr. Walker was among the first to create this genre, working in it before Silence of the Lambs. I am thrilled to learn he's starting a new series with City for Ransom. His writing terrifies and fascinates at once. I loved this book.

Summary: A nice read
It is also a good movie.

I didn't really seem to "get" it, though. Maybe I'm just not French enough, or philosophically attuned to the nuances of that culture's literature. Oh, well.

I recommend Monsieur Ibrahim et les Fleurs du Coran, but I honestly think it took the author less than a month to write it, if not less than that.
