Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: "COOKING WITH SQL" Are you an SQL novice, journeyman, expert or a non-SQL programmer? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Anthony Molinaro, has done an outstanding job of writing a practical book that gives you the reader, a glimpse of what can be done using SQL outside of what is considered the typical SQL problem domain.. Molinaro, begins by introducing very simple queries. Then, the author introduces recipes for sorting query results. Next, he introduces recipes for combining data from multiple tables. The author then introduces recipes for inserting, updating, and deleting data, respectively. He continues by introducing recipes for getting at your database metadata. Then, the author introduces recipes for manipulating strings. Next, he introduces recipes for common number crunching. He also deals with data arithmetic. The author continues by showing you recipes for some of the most common date operations you will encounter in a typical work day. Then, he introduces recipes for identifying values in ranges, and for creating ranges of values. Next, the author introduces recipes that are crucial for everyday development and yet sometimes slip through the cracks. He also introduces queries typically used in warehousing or generating complex reports. The author continues by introducing you to hierarchical recipes. Finally, the author focuses on vendor-specific solutions. In this most excellent cookbook, you will find a collection of common SQL problems and their solutions that you'll find helpful in your day-to-day work. More importantly, this cookbook will help you take your SQL skills to the next level. Summary: Excellent desktop resource book! This book review was submitted by a Roanoke Valley SQL Server Users Group member as part of the Book Review Program. Reviewed by: Harold Buckner This is a great book to have available at your fingertips. The table of contents is structured quite nicely and allows you to find what you need very quickly. The book covers a number of topics for solving everyday problems. It will also help you come up with ideas on how to go about handling particular queries by describing the problems and then listing possible solutions. And in these solutions you can find techniques on how to expand on them to resolve other issues. The author Anthony Molinaro, included a chapter on Metadata Queries that would be great for the beginner DBA wanting to find information about the database schema as well as other chapters on String manipulation, working with numbers, dates, warehousing and hierarchical queries. The author includes solutions for various platforms that I thought were nice to see how the different platforms handled the solutions. I also thought the author did a great job expanding the solution to help you understand what was happening. Great job Anthony and I hope to see more structured like this one. Harold Buckner Summary: Love this cookbook This is definitely a fantastic book. As a web developer in Kansas City, I have great need for providing my clients with great programming. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: If you want to learn DB2/SQL this is a MUST HAVE Buy this book!!! ... I wanted to refresh my basic DB2/COBOL skills, so I ordered a copy of this book. "DB2 for the COBOL Programmer" is written in a clear and concise fashion which even a novice programmer can start using immediately. SQL theory and application are presented in a way that can only be described as inspired. Curtis Garvin and Steve Eckols have done an outstanding job taking the reader from zero to competent professional in this book. I only wish that more 'techie' books were written like this one (and it's companion, Part 2). Summary: All You Need To Learn DB2 This is an excellent resource for all those baffled programmers who need to learn DB2 fast. Thos book provides clear-cut examples, syntax, and the results of the various SQL commands that are most likely to be needed by any programmer. All the basics from simple SELECT statements are covered all the way up to ORDER BY clauses, joins and so on. A special chapter on using SPUFI was also a big help. The emphasis here is on the COBOL language and mainframe computers, but it is an excellent learning tool for anyone. The book teaches by example and can be finished easily within a week (The example programs are what make it look so big). A must-read for anyone interested in relationall databases. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Quick,, Handy Reference for a former DB2 for z/OS DBA If you are coming from mainframe DB2, this is the book for you. Phil Gunning does a great job of explaining the many parameters and settings that make up DB2 UDB. Explanations are clear and straight to the point. It helped me to understand the DB2 UDB architecture and to get up to speed quick. Summary: Good Tips from A DB2 Veteran This book has helped my get started on monitoring and tuning my databases. Coming from Sybase, I had no idea where to start. I picked up this book and it guided me through all the monitoring setups and provided a monitoring and tuning methodology -- along with recommendations. This stays on my desk and is very handy. Summary: One of a Kind This book is really well organized. The section on logical and physical design was a good review for me. It reminded me how important a good design is to a successful database implementation. The SQL Tuning, Buffer pool tuning, and DB and DBM CFG tuning chapters have helped me take care of my problem databases and suboptimal SQL. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Just what you need Great book. covers everything you need to know for the exam. Completed one chapter each day after reading the tutorials on the IBM site and gave the questions at the back. Wrote the exam on the 8th day and got 92%. Will definitely recommend the book Summary: A very good book for exam 700 This book helped me to prepare for the exam well but I felt this book should have had some more information about UDT /UDF . Other than that this book was an excellent choice to prepare for exam 700 Summary: Hema A very good book for clearing the certification. Lot of explanation in this book is written keeping in view of certification. But it is a very good book for even interviews also. Prior experience in DB2 would be a plus to enhance your understanding. The chapter on locks is very good and you would not forget the different locking scenarios after reading this book. I have cleared the exam with 80%. Be careful while answering the queries in exam, becoz most of the questions look alike as in the book but answer will not be the same as there is a slight difference in framing the question. Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: Not for Mainframe DB2 I should have done my homework before i bought this book. If you are using db2 on the mainframe im not sure you will find this book too helpful as it caters to windows and linux users. Im very new to db2 and did not find this book that helpful as far as laying down the basics. Summary: DB2 Simplified I found this book extremely comprehensive. The use of screen captures in partnership with textual descriptions are so much better. Bravo to those who took the time to create a fantastic learning and reference tool! Summary: The book lives up to its name This book has something for every level of DB2 expertise from beginner to intermediate to expert. The books name implied there would be lots of visual images and the books was loaded with charts, pictures and screenshots. These make learning about DB2 much easier and more fun, than reading plain text. Every chapter in the book had some nuggets of information that seemed to be hidden in other resources. I did have some favorite chapters, though. I have worked with partitioned databases for some time and it is one of the more complicated features in DB2. I found their section on database partitions to be exceptionally clear. I found the chapter on connectivity scenarios to be especially useful. They covered just about every scenario I could think of and through pictures, made it seem simple. Security in DBMS's is quite complex and DB2 is no exception. The authors did a great job of using pictures, to make it much easier to understand. Their big picture of DB2 security certainly expresses at least 1,000 words worth of knowledge. Even if you are not studying for a certification test, the questions at the end of each chapter are great for helping cement what you learned in the chapter. I'm hoping that the authors are busily preparing a new edition of the book to teach about the next version of DB2, code-named Viper. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Very useful and timely book The book is very practical and timely; it contains the complex of useful rules either dispersed in many different sources or not published at all. For example my colleague who is a DB Oracle administrator in Sony Computer Entertainment distinguished the following recommendations: · Hardening Oracle environment · Avoiding the use of mod_plsql · Not making a database a web server and not store HTML pages in the database From my perspective the rules concerning Web services and cross-site scripting are the most valuable. Working on these applications I see how vulnerable is a database server due to some security holes; therefore avoiding the holes is important. Summary: This is a very good book This is a very good book. It is very readable and very informative. It has a lot of useful stuff. I recommend it highly. Summary: Very good book Really good book. Easy to read and good content. I recommend it to anyone doing db work. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Very extensive [A review of the 5th EDITION 2004.] IBM invented relational databases and its DB2 is one of the company's core technologies. While it trails Oracle in market share, the capabilities as shown here by Mullins are probably at least the equal of Oracle's 10g. This book is designed for a full time DB2 administrator or developer, who needs an extensive reference on it. It's fair to say that you would not want to learn the theory of relational databases from this book. Sadly, there is only one, passing reference to E F Codd, in the context of normalisation of data. Minimal acknowledgment of the founder of relational modelling. Seek a learning of theory elsewhere. Instead, the book focuses on all the options built into DB2. By now, possibly person-centuries of IBM's programmer sweat have gone int this latest version 8. You can take advantage of this accrued expertise. Though the time needed to absorb a chapter may be nontrivial. Summary: Great Reference Book This book was very useful in providing me a greater understanding of the material. Summary: A great book for a DB2 professional. If you are a savvy DB2 developer/DBA, you ought to own this book. This book will take you from the basics to the intricate details about DB2 internals. It also talks about data warehousing briefly so one can get an idea. If you work with DB2 then you should own this book as a handy reference. I have benefitted with this book a lot and I would like to thank Craig for that!!! Craig keep writing..... Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Worst Book When I first started with DB2, this book was recommended to me by someone who read the v7.2 book by the same authors. This was the most confusing techie book I have ever read. Amongst all the typos, my biggest gripe is the index. You may as well rip the index out of the book because it is useless. There hasn't been one time where I wanted to look something up, referring to the index, and found what I was looking for. Its like a 900 page book with a 7 page index... useless. Summary: NOT a good book So it claims that Chapter 1-8 covers the objectives for Exam 700. It should have said - and MORE, SO MUCH MORE. Which borders on garbage. Please focus only on the exam objectives. The topic on MDC perhaps should have covered over 30 pages in a book titled "DB2 New Features" instead of this one? I passed 700 and 701 thanks to FREE IBM Exam Prep Tutorials and the Supplementals. These 2 are ALL one needs. Summary: Lo que necesitas para certificarte/What you need to get certified Realmente estoy muy complacido con este libro, el cual me ha servido para prepararme y poder certificarme, lo recomiendo ampliamente. I'm relly satisfied with this book, it has been a big help to get ready and get my own db2 certified, i'd highly recommend it. Summary: |
