Summary: Architectual Graphic Standards February 23, 2006
The most up to date technical information for the architectual and construction community. A must have source of information.
Summary: Regarding 1934 reprint of 1st edition: good resource
This is an excellent resource for anyone looking to understand traditional building materials and methods. The printing is excellent. The actual plates from the original work are valuable not only for the technical information they contain, but the artistry with which they were composed is superb.

If you already have a copy of the 2nd or 3rd edition (perhaps even 4th?, but I only have seen the former), this book is superfluous. The material contained herein is essentially the same and in the next two additions. If you can find a copy of the 3rd edition, I would recommend that to anyone looking for an old Architectural Graphics Standards, as it contains some additional information.

About the contents: This book is particularly useful regarding masonry construction, including terra-cotta facades. It also shows traditional woodwork details, but only to the extent that the modern AGS editions do--that is to say, there is something to be desired. If that is your interest, there are numerous other books on that subject available on Amazon (just search for them).
Summary: Architectural Graphic Standards
About every thing you need to know about architecture, drawing architechture, and understanding architecture. This is a valuable addition and source of information for my architectural library.

Summary: The Single Best Volume on UI Design
I have said for many years that "there isn't one programmer who doesn't think he he can't do design, and there isn't one who can." -- Steve Krug comes pretty close to proving that we can learn, though. This book is wonderful; it makes the essence of good design so clear that it seems obvious, seems like you've known it all along.

This book should be read by anyone who has any intention of coming near a software development process. If you're going to be in the room, you need to have read this book. Otherwise, sit outside and stay very quiet.

Summary: Excellent book
"Don't Make Me Think" is clear, concise, and very, very funny. I would recommend it to anyone developing a commercial website. Good job!
Summary: Great Read!
The author definitely practices what he preaches by keeping the book short, to the point and very enjoyable to read. I did not read the first edition, but this book was a great! I would have loved to have seen more real-situation examples, but otherwise well worth my money and a must have for all web designers.

Summary: Sesame Street for Software Developers!!!
This book absolutely rocks! I truly have a passion for software development, but I find most books to be just plain dry and boring. This book takes a light-hearted and fun "Sesame Street" type approach to teaching design patterns. If you want to learn more about this subject and have fun doing it, you won't find a better book! It's not only fun, the examples make it very easy to understand the core concepts of design patterns. You won't find this type of approach in the Gang of Four book or Sun's "Core J2EE Patterns" book. If I were designing a computer science curriculum for a university, this book would be required reading!
Summary: The best book on Design Patterns!
This book helped me pass the Sun Certified Enterprise Architect Exam. I had tried to read the Gang of Four book, several times, but it just couldn't hold my interest. Using this book, the related poster, and some flash cards I made up, I was able to master all the patterns in the GoF book in just a couple of weeks. I got 100% on the design patterns questions on my cert!

Highly recommended!

Summary: Excellant Book even if you are not a Java developer
This book was recommended by a friend. When I got the book and started to look at it I was afraid I had just wasted my money. The style of the book is so different from other technical books I have read, I thought I would not be able to read this one. This was not true. The book is really easy to read and I found the style perfect for this topic. I can't say enough good things about this book. I can say that I am a C# developer and I was totally able to relate to 99% of all the examples in this book. If anything this book will help you understand how similar the to languages and their frameworks are similar.

Summary: Ok coverage but lots of mistakes
No book can really cover the entire material but the no. of typos, mistakes and incorrect code samples is really exasperating ... however if you are willing to supplement study by yourself, the practise questions and exams are sufficently indicative of the real exam.
Summary: great certification tool!!!
great certification tool!!!
but u will need also transcenders for exam preparation. contact me on my gmail account (certstuff). i will send u a list of transcenders i can sell u, 10$ each one. thnks

Summary: Terrible book!!..do NOT buy till a second edition!
I am already MCP and had read many training kits, but this would be with no doubt the worst, i will list my impression about this book in terms of the many negatives and rare positives i found.

NEGATIVES:
*chapters are mixed up with lessons, and both are VERY poorly organized, with ambiguos titles for chapters(like instrumentation , interoperation)you will be very lucky if you could guess the contents based on the titles!
*Very poor editing , you find many copy and paste errors in code, duplicated figures and questions to chapters in wrong place.
*finally and MOST IMPORTANT, providing MISLEADING and WRONG information(confirmed after contacting authors).
*does NOT cover even 50% of exam, i had to go to MSDN and other resources.

POSITIVES
*you get 15% discount voucher for the exam.
*authors are aware of their mistakes and are striving to make a better edition.

I would suggest that you dont buy this book unless you are in a hurry for the exam and /or this book is your only choice(another TK is on its way out).

Summary: The art side of web design
Yes, I admit this book is not as technical as one would think when thinking about books on CSS. However, this book has opened up my eyes to the art-side of web design like no other book has. I've read "art" books, and I've read "technical" books. This book brings me the best of both worlds, looking at the art side of technical websites.
I recommend this book for those who have faith in the art side of web design and don't just see them making boxy websites for corporates for the rest of their life.
Summary: 5 Stars... Buy this Book. CSS IS about DESIGN.
Hello -

As a college web graphics, HTML, and CSS instructor with a history in graphic design, there is not greater book (especially combined with a careful review of the actual website the book is based upon) written on CSS that brings out its strength in design.

How ironic that the critics here are upset that it spends so much time on design. That's the point. Most web developers DO NOT study carefully the principles of graphic design and how to apply them, so they miss its power (not just Beauty... but the power to persuade, among other things).

I disagree that there is not enough CSS explanation in the book, though it is probably not the book for a total beginner. If you have written a bit of CSS code in your pages, AND what to learn what design is all about then you will understand it, and this is an invaluable book. Be sure to take the time to visit the CSSZenGarden.com site and chew on the concepts with the real examples.
Summary: ESSENTIAL Reading For ALL Web Designers
'the Zen of CSS design' by Dave Shea and Molly Holzschlag is one of the most important web design books on the market today. The word Zen is truly the right way to describe this text, as it is laid out so carefully and calmly, you can't help but feel your heartbeat go down and your tension decrease as you enjoy this wonderful text.

Using examples developed on their own web site csszengarden.com, the authors study a myriad of different approaches, the decisions that were made when developing each of these sites, and the ways that CSS can easily be altered and modified by the web developer.

Looking at all the facets of web design from font selection, image choices, tables, color picking, etc etc etc this is the perfect resource for anyone that is in charge of designing a web site which is being used as an online application, corporate web site, or even a personal site. The authors combine years upon years of experience to produce a guide that is informative, pleasing to read, and calming to look at.

ESSENTIAL buy for all web designers that want to learn the difference between a good web site and a great web site. Learn that sometimes MINIMIZING maximizes a users experience and discover how to get there with this exceptional book.

***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Outstanding 3-volume set that will soon become a cornerstone of any creative library. A great source to find inspiration and the handsome set adds a touch of class to your bookshelf. You can't beat Amazon's price, either. Highly recommended.
Summary: Great Book + Case is Not a Problem
Agreed, the book is extremely comprehensive. The case, though not particularly attractive, should pop open by pulling on the corner. Unless I was lucky...
Summary: incredible review
This is a must have for anyone interested in design. The reader is treated to the very best in design, design that works, looks great and is innovative. Starting in the 1600's, the work takes the reader on a journey of design. It limits itself to 999 objects and not one is a miss.

Summary: Very solid book
As someone new to OLAP, I found this book to be VERY helpful really getting a solid handle on OLAP. My company needed to understand and move forward on building a OLAP solution. This book helped my get a handle on what we needed to do, and a high level of how to go about it.

This is the first book I'd recommend to anyone interested in OLAP.

Summary: More than just a great read
In my mind this book is defintely the most definitive guide to dimensional modeling. Although there are some chapters (the last two that deals with process and other issues, the biggest part of the book is solely about dimensional modeling. Yes the first chapter deals with what it is (in general), why we would like to use dimensional modeling and some myths and caveats. However, from chapter 2 through 12, the book is hand-on.

Chapters 2 - 5 is for me the most impressive chapters of the book as it takes several business processes that is common in many businesses and discuss the design of the star cshemas in great depth. However, nowhere in the book is any design upheld as a panacea -- everywhere the book discusses at great length the possible problems and the design decisions to be made. It thus emphasizes that there is no "one-size fits all" in dimensioanl modeling.

Chapters 6, 7 and 8 deals with CRM, Accounting and HR respectively, while chapters 9 - 14 deals with different industries and their peculiar problems. The industrues are: Telecomms and utilities, Transportation, Education, Healthcare and e-commerce. Each chapter introduces new design guidelines and new problem areas anbd their possible solutions. Chapter 15 deals with the Insurance industry and essentially serves as a nicesummary of the proposed techniques as most are emplyed in the Insurance case study.

If you do not have a fairly good understanding of dimensional modeling after reading this text I would be very surprised.

However, it is more than just a read to know about dimensional modeling. The way the case studies are handled and the problems identified and discussed also makes it a true reference book. I think evrybody involved in dimensional modeling should have one on his/her desk.
Summary: The standard
If you only have time to read one book about dwh, read this one. It gives beguinners a complete overview about the most important aspects (technologies and techniques) involved, for the advanced one this book a good reverece (especially in terms of data modelling).

His Lifecyle approach is still the standard in the industry for analytical systems.

I've been working now for several years in the industry and this book has helped me more than anything else, because Kimball shows you the true problems you usually face during implementing dss and provides practical and useful solutions.
