Summary: Latest edition excellent
Digital photography is a fast-moving target, and this book manages to keep abreast of the latest changes with valuable information that's vital for anyone doing digital photography. It explains all the key concepts clearly and completely, with lots of advice on getting the best photographs with any type of digital camera. I would have liked additional coverage of digital SLRs, but I have found that elsewhere, and still prefer Complete Digital Photography's treatment of the broader topics.
Summary: Excellent book
It has everything that a lay man needs to know in order to make best use of his digital camera. Author Ben Long writes very clearly.
Summary: Not what I expected
I should have done extensive research prior to buying this book, it lacks a very important feature in my opinion, the sample pictures have no information on how it was taken, no shutter speed, ISO lens or F-stop guides. I later found such a book, but I will allow you to do your own research.

Summary: Great approach to Photoshop Elements 4
While the Elements 4 manual isn't exactly missing, it is no where near as complete as this one, which covers every feature in great detail. This book belongs on the shelf of every digital photographer who is using Elements.
Summary: Photoshop Elements 4 The Missing Manual
I adopted Photoshop Elements 4 One on One to use for a class I am teaching on Photoshop Elements 4. This book did not come with a CD. One has to go online to get the lessons that go with the book. That can be a problem for students who do not have Internet access when they are working from home. Believe it or not some people still do not have the Internet!

I have used the book to gain addtional information about Photoshop Elements 4 and found it to be very good. I just think a CD or DVD should have been included. All of the classroom books used in the community college have CDs or DVDs in the back of the book so students expect it today.
Summary: Manual for Photoshop Elements $
It was brand new and undamaged. Exactly what I expected.

Summary: Absolute must-have
I absolutely recommend this book to anyone in need to improve his/her understanding of camera techniques. This book is awesome! Peterson does a really down-to-earth way of discribing aperture/shutter speed...etc...and the correct and best use of those in a very simple to understand way. The book is a joy to read. He gives great tips and tricks and even assingments you can do if you like to really see what he's talking about. I just got this book last week and am already a firm believer that with the help of it you can improve your knowledge and end result of your exposures/pictures. A+
Summary: A Must-Have Book For Any Photographer
This book demystifies the complexity in the relationship between aperture, shutter speed, digital or film ISO and takes you through several practical exercises that establish clear and simpler guidelines for your photography goals. "Choice" is the keyword in this book, as he wants you to understand the difference between a proper exposure and a creative exposure and the choices of lighting conditions you can make and how to use and measure them. This is a definite must-have for the serious hobbyist to pro photographer and you can't beat Amazon's price of $14.97. I highly recommend it. Because his written teaching style is so good, I am going to buy his other book "Learning to See Creatively" from Amazon, while their price is so low.
Summary: Talk about simplifying exposure!
Bryan Peterson explains exposure in plain english. I have many books on photography and this book has probably been one of the easiest to understand and most informative books I have come across to date. His quirky, fun sense of explaining exposure keeps your interest in the book too. Highly recommend!!

Summary: Very Good Book -- Beginner's Perspective
I knew nothing about Photoshop when I purchased this book. I found the DVD-book combo to be quite helpful. The book can be used as a series of lessons done sequentially or you can use it to find techniques to solve particular problems, so it makes both a good coursebook and a good reference book.

The one thing missing in the book for me as a beginner has been commented on by others, and that is the "do this then do this" approach to achieve a result. An example is enhancing photos through levels where you are told to make particular changes. After it is over you are told that you figure out how to make the best changes by moving and nudging levels until the image is optimal. A better approach would be having the reader make the less than ideal changes and having Deke point out what is "wrong" with the result.

For a beginner, one of the challenges of Photoshop is learning not just how to use the program but learning how to see the changes, or learning to develop a "Photoshop eye." This is mostly what is lacking in the book. However, there are places where this issue is addressed, including the section on the burn and dodge tools.

Overall I am very pleased with this book and found it to be well worth the money spent. In addition to getting across the basics, it has made using Photoshop enough fun that I am now experimenting with more artistic rather than utilitarian techniques.
Summary: complaint
After ordering and receiving the book ,Iwas somewhat displeased with the fact that I had to go out and buy DVD drive in order to use the DVD that was included as part of the study process.
It would seem to me that I should been notified of this before I ordered the book.
I now have the book, the DVD ,and no place to go unless I buy
a DVD drive for from 60-200.00.
I don't think that my comments are unreasonable.Do you?

Title: Photoshop CS2 One-On-One Review
Author: Deke McClelland
Publisher: O'Reilly
ISBN: 0596100965

Reviewer: Michelle LaRock
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Holding an aversion to any type of user manual as indecipherable and confusing, I have found "Adobe Photoshop CS2 One-on-One" by Deke McClelland to be an extremely user friendly and interesting way to learn more about my favorite program Photoshop.

The books is arranged into 12 logically ordered lessons, allowing the more experienced user to skip what it not needed and to hop ahead to new things to learn. I found this a wonderful way of setting the lessons up and I resent working through training books only to find that I could have written the lesson rather than taken the lesson. Consequently, this book is great for users at all skills levels

The easy to use enclosed CD makes the lessons vibrant and interesting. The sidebar, "Pearls of Wisdom" are excellent allowing the reader to pick up those pro tips we all wish we had someone around to explain and teach. Of course, you won't learn all you need to know about Photoshop in this book or any other, but the hands-on experience available in this book is just what I needed to learn. I've never been able to read a manual and figure out a program. Hands-on is the way to go for me so I found this book particularly helpful.

Perhaps those who learn by reading (as some of my colleagues do), will find this book frustrating, but it was just the ticket for me!

Summary: Restoration and Retouching At It's Best
One of the best, most definitive and authorative books on the subject I have ever found. Well written, well indexed, wonderful examples.
Summary: Best book in my collection
After many books I've finally found the holy grail of Photoshop retouching. No need to bore you with the details, if you want to repair photos or enhance them in any way, you need this one.

Summary: Excellent choice for anyone wanting to enhance and preserve images.
Almost everyone in the world has a digital camera now and lots of photos--not all of which are perfect, no matter how hard you tried to when you took the photo. Then there are those boxes and boxes of old photos, loose or in albums that constitute our family histories. Old photos fade, get scratched, bent and generally lose quality over time. This book is for those who want to preserve and enhance those photos.

The book is also a tutorial for users of Photoshop, beginning with a section called Photoshop Essentials. In this section, the author reviews Photoshop tools, keyboard shortcuts, how to navigate and use Photoshop efficiently, with the focus on the tools needed for restoration and retouching. It is not a primer for Photoshop. My Photoshop skills are not very high level and this section was a great help.

Not only does the author show you how to use Photoshop, but she also discusses how to set up your work area, what kind of lighting you should have, the workflow, equipment needed, with tips on how to proceed in a manner that allows you (or someone else) to come back and know what you have done.

One of the things that impressed me when I first glanced through the book is the large number of photos used to illustrate the principles being explained. In addition, the
explanations not only focus on the mechanics, but also on the reasons for making the needed changes. Learning the principles behind the changes will help you assess what needs to be done to your own photos.

The book is organized so that each section is almost independent of the other sections--at least once you have some basics down. This makes it possible to focus on areas that are of more interest to you or necessary for the work you want to do. This is especially true if you are already very familiar with Photoshop and able to identify the problems that need solving in your photos.

If you are not familiar with Photoshop, your time would be well spent to work through the exercises. I find that I can read about stuff forever, but when I actually use my hands and my brain together, I retain more information. You will be able better to identify what needs to be improved in your own photos by reviewing the samples and making the corrections.

I highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to seriously undertake the preservation of photographs that are important for whatever reason--family history or historical significance or just to create better photos.

Summary: Very useful book
I had a good working knowledge of Photoshop before reading this book. I'm only halfway through, and I'm learning a lot of very practical tips that I will be able to apply to editing my portrait photographs.

I only gave it a four because the order seems odd to me. The introduction to layers is several hundred pages into the book, I thought that didn't make sense.
Summary: Poorly Organized and Hard to Follow
Superficially Evening's book appears to be all that anybody would ever need about Photoshop CS2. In fact, it is an impossible introduction for people making the jump from a simpler program, say Elements 3.0.

The organizational structure is poor.

Many ideas are used before they are explained, a fatal flaw as a text, tho' excusable in a pure reference volume. But "For Photographers" claims to be a text and not a reference.

Terms are slipped in for somewhere without adequate definitions.

And neither the table of contents nor the index are detailed enough to help somebody find most detailed topics.

I bought Scott Kelby's book after putting Evening's on the shelf, probably for good. Kelby gives the info a photographer making the jump to CS2 requires, although his language is famously just a bit to glib.
Summary: Wonderful introduction to the new version
I have some experience with Photoshop - but I'm hardly an expert. I bought this book when upgrading from CS to CS2. I found it to clearly and concisely cover all the basic tasks that you would want to do, such as color correction (with any of several different techniques), sharpening, cropping and so on.

It's the best book I've read on the topic (I have five in my library).

Summary: Digital SLR Photography
I found the book by David Busch very easy to understand and to the point. All of my questions were answered in a very short time.
Summary: Excellent book in every respect
This is a great book for the techno-savvy non-professional, someone who probably enjoyed a 35mm SLR for years, and is now moving up to a digital SLR after suffering with a digital point-and-shoot for a few years. If you're the sort of person who actually read the instruction manual that came with your new digital SLR, you'll love this book.

The book is a great refresher on SLR photography, and provides a detailed but not overwhelming technical description on the mechanics of digital photography. Having read the book, I now feel I have a pretty good grasp on how my new digital SLR works, how it differs from my 35mm SLR and point-and-shoot cameras, and what its strengths and limitations are. The book will take you to a level far beyond what the camera's instruction manual did.

I also like the fact that the book essentially excluded any discussion of photo-processing software. It really focussed on all the issues up to and through the actual picture taking process.
Summary: Thorough and nothing new
It's okay. But aside from the history and the mechanics of photography, you might learn most of this just from reading the manual of your SLR. If you already have a good grasp on photography, and you think somehow this is going to give you a professional edge, or some fancy tips, you're mistaken. Just go out and take pictures and have fun :) That's the best way to become a pro ;)

Summary: Photoshop Elements 4 Book for Digital Photographers
This is better than any other photoshop elements manual that I have seen. Awesome!
Summary: Photoshop Elements 4 for Digital Photographers
Written for Windows and using a Macintosh, many lessons don't quite fit. The information presented can be accomplished mostly by using the Tools and not resorting to using Layers as stated. Some Windows topics are covered which are not in the Mac version, such as the Organizer. Mac users have iPhoto and don't need the organizer. There some things not present in Elements 4 which are in CS-2, but there are work arounds and the difference in result is hardly noticeable. This is an excellent reference book as you can jump into the section you need. As it is written for Windows the Mac user will see illustrations not familiar, and of course the directions don't always fit, but they are adaptable. You may just have to figure how to get there.
Marty Grauer, Fresno Macintosh Users Group
Summary: Must-have book for Elements 4
This book rocks.
Beginners to pros will find plenty of help, ideas and techniques in this book.
I did a portrait retouch in about an hour, followed the easy, step by step instructions and was blown away with the result!
Amazing.
You will get a lot of help with most all photographic problems such as incorrectly exposed or out of focus photos.
The book uses the tried and proven step-by-step method of instruction which never leaves me hanging.
The book's section on retouching portraits alone is well worth the price of this book. You can use these techniques and methods for many other photo types as well.
