Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Regarding 1934 reprint of 1st edition: good resource This is an excellent resource for anyone looking to understand traditional building materials and methods. The printing is excellent. The actual plates from the original work are valuable not only for the technical information they contain, but the artistry with which they were composed is superb. If you already have a copy of the 2nd or 3rd edition (perhaps even 4th?, but I only have seen the former), this book is superfluous. The material contained herein is essentially the same and in the next two additions. If you can find a copy of the 3rd edition, I would recommend that to anyone looking for an old Architectural Graphics Standards, as it contains some additional information. About the contents: This book is particularly useful regarding masonry construction, including terra-cotta facades. It also shows traditional woodwork details, but only to the extent that the modern AGS editions do--that is to say, there is something to be desired. If that is your interest, there are numerous other books on that subject available on Amazon (just search for them). Summary: Architectural Graphic Standards About every thing you need to know about architecture, drawing architechture, and understanding architecture. This is a valuable addition and source of information for my architectural library. Summary: Very pleased This book was listed as "used", and at approx. $170 it was all I could afford for my hubby's birthday (he's been eyeing a copy for a while, but couldn't buy a new one). Anyway, I knew he'd be happy with a "used" copy. Well....when it arrived it looked straight-from-the-factory-new. I was very pleased! Quite a wonderful gift. He was very appreciative. Thank you for helping make his birthday! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Clear, despite the superficial looks At first glance, the book looks weird, with child-like drawings, quasi hand-written explanations and 'bad' jokes. But all of these are actually very helpful in communicating intent. For example in larger code listings, you can safely ignore most of the code and just pay attention to the 'manual' notes which show very clearly what is happening and why. They're much easier to pick up than embedded comments in the code would be. Interviews with patterns, which also appear regularly, emphasize the finer points and subtle differences between different patterns. The book claims Java knowledge to be a requirement. I found this is mostly not the case. There are some Java-dependent implementations here and there (the implementation of the Proxy pattern comes to mind as something that is too Java-centric to be useful in other languages, though the purpose and principles of the pattern are still clear). Most of the code is very readable if you just know how to interpret curly-brace syntax and are familiar with basic object terminology. Downsides are: - relative lack of 'real' examples of where a given pattern could be used. If you have any experience programming, you'll probably recognize as you read about some patterns that you've already used them (or something similar to them), or at least identify places where you wished you had done so. But it wouldn't hurt to have some more realistic examples than the duck simulator. - I found the exercises to be mostly too simple to bother with. - The leftover patterns get a treatment which I think is too short to be useful. I'd have preferred having 4 pages per leftover pattern, or two pages but more tightly packed than they are now. Summary: It explains why Design Patterns are good coding practices Most computer books generally skip or just brush by explanations of why a certain set of coding practices are important. Better than any book I've seen in computing, this book tackles a complex topic and drives home the importance of why a given pattern is important. Rather than "do this because we know it's good for you", this book drags the reader through an information maze, constantly nuding the reader's involvement with a series of zany and not-so-zany exercises. The humor is both campy (with the Andy Hardy era photos) and hip. However, it's not superflous or off point. Everything in this book has been woven together into a fine collection of explanations, exercises and examples, the likes of which I've never seen. The care given to how everything ties together is remarkable, and while some may snort that the book is too cartoony, I found it to be otherwise. (It's like saying that the New Yorker is too cartoony.) Most important is that this book worked for me. I didn't breeze by it on a single read, but rather I went over it again and again, finding new nugets with each read. Granted, I often didn't do all of the little exercises, and I'm poorer for it. Also, I sometimes skipped the DP Guru exchanges with "grasshopper" (if you've never seen re-runs of Kung-Fu with David Caradine, you may miss the reference), but I still was able to create design patterns -- and in ActionScript 2.0; not Java, the language for which the book was written. So if you want to lean Design Patterns and learn how and when to use them, this book is solid gold. Summary: Read this book first before the GOF book. I mean, I agree that this book wouldn't exist if not for the GOF book, but seriously, I think these people have done such a better job of actually teaching and presenting the patterns to everyone that I think everyone should first read this book before they read the GOF book. Now, it's a different question whether you can stand the dull style of the GOF book after having read this awesome and fun to read book. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: BUY THE HARDCOVER!! What a waste of time, money and energy!! This cd allows you to review the NEC 2005 handbook but you can't print the whole thing to use as a paper hardcover reference, only sections can be printed. Why pay twice as much for a product that only has half as much value. The paper book version costs half of what this costs and you can photocopy it for reference if you want. Also included on this disc are "read only" versions of the last three versions of the NEC (again somewhat limited if not altogether useless. Imagine dragging your computer or laptop around with you on a major construction job, ready to pull it out whenever you had a question.. consider that laptop disposable). To top it all off the program only allows two activations, so you can only install it on two computers or activate it twice online ( laptop, work or home totals three... good luck). This product is definately the result of corporate, copyright infringement paranoia!! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A comprehensive and superbly organized guide to using MySQL Now in an expanded and updated third edition, the popular MySQL by computer software expert Paul DuBois provides a comprehensive and superbly organized guide to using MySQL, effectively, productively, and immediately. This massive, 1320 page manual describes everything from the basics, to using MySQL to generate dynamic Web pages, to administering MySQL servers. This newly revised third edition covers the new features and improvements of MySQL 5 in detail, and incorporates feedback from readers and top MySQL developers to make this the most comprehensive and thorough edition to date. Summary: Very Useful When I first got this book I was put off by its size. I mean what developers have time to read books over 400 pages long? And this one is over twice that size. But I started reading it and I found that it is clear and explains things very well. I also found out that I don't need to read the whole book, because it is broken up into different subjects -- really like several books in one book. I am a single independent developer that is working on building a huge PHP, MySQL Web site and I need to know how to use MySQL very effectively and how to optimize what MySQL has to offer. Since I'm outsourcing all my hosting, at this time I don't need to know about MySQL administration, and since I'm only using PHP, I don't need to know about the other APIs, and I can use the appendixes as a reference for functions and such. So I only have to read about 350 pages instead of 1150. And if I find I need to know about MySQL admin or about another API, it's right there. So, I'm happy, and the book is great. I've read 100 pages so far. Summary: Great as a reference / advanced text I was already developing mysql & php sites and apps when i purchased this book, so it was a good buy as a reference text, but if you intent to learn Mysql, there are better books than this one. It is deep, slow to read, with rather small text size. For the beginner, i think it's not a good starter. But on the other hand it has almost everything you would want to know about Mysql, with lots of examples and quite well explained. I learned Mysql and PHP from Sam's "Php and Mysql web development", and i couldn't recommend that one enough. It's a GREAT text for the beginner. I found myself writing Php/Mysql web sites in less than 3 months, starting from nothing. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Great ride! I really like novels that blend genres like science fiction and thrillers- you get the best of both worlds if it's done well. This is an exciting tale that moves at a fast clip, but the ending does (unfortunately) leave some unanswered questions. Still, it's a joy ride if you like non-stop action. Here's hoping the next book wraps up some of the unfinished business of Maximum Ride. Also read An Audience for Einstein, another very good novel that blends genres well. Summary: Left Hanging... Okay, let me first say that I am a HUGE James Patterson fan! But I have noticed that the last few books I've read have been slipping. Maximum Ride was no different. I loved the main character and how her personality was portrayed through the writing. Even the story itself could have been good. The problem was that it felt like a roller coaster that went up and down - up and down - up and down - and then crashed. There was no ending. The book just stopped and I was VERY disappointed! Summary: Good, but not that good Thought this probably isn't the first review you've read, I'll give a brief summary. Kids, part bird, have been rescued by a kind scientist from the place that they were rescued from. (School). He went missing 2 years before the story starts. When the littlest one is kidnapped by wolf-mutants, more specifically the scientist's son, they go off on a mission to save her. Good: interesting story Bad: Patterson tried to write like a kid would; unfortunately too well. They story is woefully written and they're are many things that just happen that would never happen. the heroine is too predictable and the surprise at the end is not a surprise. Patterson ends upbruptly, as if he wrote a long book and just cut it in half, with no regard as to where he did it. They bizzarely just go to NY, where Max starts hearing voices in her head. They eventually lead them to another Institute. most of the book seems to jsut be strying to drag on. The Erasers are written like a second grader would. Poor choice of vocabulary and unoriginal dialogue. Don't read this unless you wish to read second one, there is no closure. Summary: |
| The Art of Project Management
Publisher: O'Reilly Media, Inc. |

| ISBN: 0596007868 List Price: $39.95 Amazon Price: $39.95 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Finally a readable PM book!! Of all the project management related books I've read this one stands out for me in that it didn't put me to sleep after the first chapter. The writing is excellent and entertaining and covers areas that most theory heavy books don't. It's like having an experienced PM mentor guiding you through the maze of issues a manager faces. I'd definitely recommend this one to my colleagues. My only problem now is how to anonymously send a copy to my manager. Summary: "The beginning is the most important part of the work." "The beginning is the most important part of the work." So says Plato in The Republic. So perhaps it is fitting that The Art of Project Management (Scott Berkun, O'Reilly 2005, 396 Pages, ISBN 0596007868) is written by an experienced project manager that studied not only computer science and design, but philosophy as well. Clearly and thinking man, his thoughts and experiences as a product manager at Microsoft are tied into historical perspectives of grand projects of history, and translated into an easy to read and follow format. It does not matter if you are the sole developer on a project, part of a team, or the leader of a project. This book provides valuable wisdom and insight that the success of a project is dependent on strong project management and planning from the beginning to the bitter end. From The Pyramids To The Kitchen Berkun is keenly aware of and believes in the notion that project management is not a new concept. At the start of the book, he takes us back to the days when the great pyramids were built and to the present with thoughts about modern-day restaurant kitchens. The latter is highly organized chaos, much like flight operations on an aircraft carrier. In the busy kitchen, everything is run so smoothly and efficiently despite constant flux in the environment. It is the history of project management and how it works outside peoples' normal thought processes that Berkun challenges the reader with from the beginning. Learning From Failure Berkun, who openly acknowledges the mistakes, failures, and challenges of his time at Microsoft is clear that organizations need to dissect every project after the fact so that lessons can be learned and applied. Throughout the book, he also emphasizes the importance of planning and setting realistic milestone schedules that can react easily to changes without major impact. The author then leads the reader through each step of the project life cycle, interjecting thoughtful discussion and not just rigid "book rules" and theories. He acknowledges the place of theory, especially in decision making, yet shows their limits when it comes to real life, time-constrained decision making. For this reader, the biggest strength of the book is its continual focus on the human dynamics associated with communication, leadership, and politics surrounding. Berkun argues that unless these are mastered, any project is doomed to failure. Who Should Read This Book? This book should be read by any system administrator or application developer involved in any size project. It should be read by people who want to be or are program managers, It should be read by those who manage project managers. And finally, it should be read by information technology compliance and governance professionals from two perspectives. The first is two understand the dynamics of project that pose governance challenges. the other is to see how they can apply the principles to their governance implementations. Scorecard Eagle on an Average Par 5 Summary: Simply the best book on project management that I've ever read I've read a lot of books on project management, and Scott's book really stands out. Scott really captures the "heart and soul" of project management. A good project manager will read this book and become a better project manager, and a novice will learn a great deal about how to run a good project. I especially like the "lessons learned" aspect of this book -- I really got the sense that he's seen his share of projects, and he shares the ups and downs from his past in a way that's really informative. I can't recommend this book highly enough. (Disclosure: I was a technical reviewer for this book.) Summary: |
