Summary: Couldn't put this down!
Jeannette Walls pens an intriguing story. I was drawn to the plight of her and her siblings.
Summary: Awesome read!
I first heard about this book on The Diane Rehm Show (NPR). Diane was interviewing Jeannette about her story and I was intrigued. As it turns out, this possibly could make my top 10 list! I was hooked from page one. I could care less about the arguments other people have about the validity of the memories of a 3-year-old. The whole picture she paints of her childhood and parents was enough to sell me. I have given copies of this book to several friends who are expecting their first child. I think if you have any doubts about raising a "good kid", read this, and it should restore all confidence. I hear a movie deal is in the works. I doubt it will be as good as the book (they never are), but it will be interesting to see the cast. God forbid Brad Pitt or Jessica Simpson are anywhere near this.
Summary: Depressing
I feel bad that Jeanette Walls had such a terrible childhood. Mine wasn't the best either, so perhaps that is why I have put the book aside before I finished it.

Summary: amzing
this is the perfect way to get to know perfectly Kubrick's ideas of his films. With fotos and texts real kubrick's fans are going to be amazed by this book that was done very carefully.
Summary: Worth the weight (and price)
While Kubrick has been gone for years, his films remain a testatment to how good and how diverse the work of a single director can be.

The Stanley Kubrick Archives is an unsurpassed collection of a life's work, perfectly broken into two distinct sections.

The first section undertakes a belief of Stanley's that (I'm paraphrasing poorly)"the image should speak for itself". This sees all of Kubrick's films being given the storyboard treatment (sans ANY text) with perfectly-graded stills from all the key scenes from all of his films. Truly, when looking over 2001's stunning imagery, it's impossible not to hear the classical soundtrack playing in your head.

The second section is the truly archival section of the book with in-depth analysis given to all of Kubrick's titles plus some of his work prior to becoming a feature filmaker. Projects unrealised by Kubrick himself, such as A.I. and Napoleon, are also given some print. This section is a wealth of information that will delight for years to come.

While the price & weight of the book (it's staggeringly heavy but comes in a cool-as cardboard carry case) are great, this is money well spent by any enthusiast of quality films. While Kubrick's films were not all masterpieces, as the present overall quality of film seems to be on the decline, his body of work is certainly worth remembering.
Summary: The 'Big Red Kubrick 'Book!
Astounding example of how certain books should be made. Obviously, there is a niche market for this kind of bookmaking.
Luckily, us dedicated Kubrick fans can now relish all of it.
The book contains amazing details and 'behind the scenes' views on the making of all of the Kubrick flicks. I'm positive that no other director and visionary would have their works commited to such a project other than Kubrick. The final touch is the inclusion of an actual strip of 70mm motion picture film from 2001 that Kubrick himself possessed. My copy shows Frank jogging in the centrifuge. The only caveat is the splitting of some wide screen shots between pages in the first half of the book. Other than that this book qualifies as one of the best examples of how a book should be dedicated, regardless of price, for a one of kind film director.

Summary: HILARIOUS
This book is hysterical. A great collection of sexcapades!! You won't want to put it down.
Summary: Laugh out Loud Read
What a funny and honest book about being a single woman in the year 2006!! Where is it written we have to be virgins until marriage. Why is it so wrong to do what men have been doing since the start of time?
Summary: Absofuckinglutely fabulous!
I'm younger than Chelsea is now, but the about the same age as when her exploits began. I really liked this book, and stayed up all night reading it, calling in sick to work, so that I could grab some shut eye before trying to use clever quotes and phrases from the book. A great choice for a single gal, or somebody who was hit in the head with a club and tied down...fantastic way to live vicariously.

Summary: A book which raises many questions.......
What more can be said which already hasn't of this extraordinary book written by an extraordinary man of courage? With 900+ reviews, I will not make this an overly elaborate review, as the book simply does not require it. Elie Wiesel's story is one of one man's courage, will and fortitude to push on when all around him was lost; friends, family, belongings, even basic human dignity.

What struck me more than anything else from his personal story was the retelling of the hanging of the three men (well, two men and one boy) while he was in one of the concentration camps. Millions perished, but the way the boy who suffered during the hanging stayed with me. His story is the story of millions who perished and who never got to tell their tale, and one of the few books I would call a must read.

Different instances in the book I am quite sure will strike readers differently. One of the things which struck me and stayed with me was how he kept on looking for God, even amidst the enormity man sometimes will carry out on his fellow man. What also struck me was the woman on the train who was saw the flames at the camps even before they arrived. And the times he scolded and questioned himself and his ethics for even thinking selfish thoughts even though he was dying. I still think would I (could I?) do the same if I was in his terrible position?

This book shows the worst of mankind, and sadly this terrible event known as the holocaust is not entirely unique in man's history since the freeing of Elie Wiesel. We have witnessed Rwanda firsthand in the 1990's, and have been told by world authorities that "this will never happen again." Yet in modern day Sudan(and North Korea, and Tibet.....), we see much of the same.....the world turning its back on millions of people. There may not be furnaces involved, but the crime of complicity through inaction is little different than a world which allowed human beings to be fed into furnaces. I guess the final question I come away asking from his book is "Will mankind ever learn?"
Summary: Night
Night is Wiesel's personal memoir, which relates his personal story before and during World War II, as he and his father are separated from his mother and sister and interned in a series of concentration camps.

"Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never."

I read Night in high school, and always think of it as being a particularly long book, which it is not. Wiesel manages to pack more than I would think possible into a little over a hundred pages, which relates the story of himself and his family during the Holocaust. It is a beautifully written work that relates a terrible story. I found the story of Wiesel's loss of faith and the relationship he had with his father particularly memorable. If you somehow missed this in high school, pick it up, if you didn't, find it again. It's worth it.
Summary: sign of a great writer
I always wonder what makes a book a good story to nominate for a Pulitzer prize? Even though I knew NIGHT was about the holocaust I still wondered what would make this book a winner.
My son had a copy of the book and loaned it to me. I read it in one sitting and not because it is only about 100 pages long, but because I was able to get under the skin of a man who endured unspeakable experiences and survived and found some humanity in all the horror. I love the last line of the book...priceless.

Summary: A fast, amusing, read
If you turn your nose up at early-'70s LA music, but really know more about the Eagles, Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac, etc. than you'd like to admit, then "Hotel California" is a recommended guilty pleasure.

On the other hand, if you've grown to admire the craftsmanship and durability of the songs that came out of that era, you probably deserve a more thorough and mature account of the "cowboy canyon" scene (to use Walter Becker's phrase).

Barney Hoskyns deftly covers a lot of historical ground in about 250 pages. But the quick pace leaves more than a few loose ends hanging. Early major players Barry Friedman and Mama Cass fade away fast, while Fleetwood Mac has its meteoric rise crammed into two pages. Disappointingly, Hoskyns spends more time on faves Gene Clark of the Byrds and Lowell George of Little Feat.

This leaves the usual chronicling of mega-players David Geffen, Irving Azoff, The Eagles, Linda Rondstadt, CSNY, Jackson Browne, et.al. At least novices will find out why JD Souther was so integral to the scene, even if his solo albums aren't well known.

That said, there is some bitchy fun to be had reading less-than-flattering accounts of Joni Mitchell (high-living snob), Gram Parsons (rich-kid hanger on) and even Neil Young (whose mercurial career changes seem less heroic than self-centered). These irreverant portraits are refreshing, if one-dimensional.

Wait until this comes out in paperback. Crack open a bottle of Cuervo and a few other refreshments from the era and enjoy a frivolous afternoon.

Summary: It's All Here
The definitive book on the California sound from the Laurel Canyon 60s to the cocaine addled 70s, it's all here. Special emphasis is paid to David Geffen's venture from agent to music record company owner and his specific group of artists, Jackson Browne, Eagles, JD Souther and Linda Ronstadt. The rest of music history also is here like the singer/songwriter hangout, the Troubadour. This is a fascinating period that celebrates political upheaval and the influence of songs written with meaning vs. pop love songs. For anyone with an interest in popular music, American culture or Los Angeles specifically, this is worth the read and I strongly recommend it.
Summary: Better than you would think
Hoskyns new book isn't the masterpiece that his previous 'Waiting for the Sun' was but it's a fine job, nonetheless. The Laurel Canyon scene in the '70s is a much-derided smorgasbourg of drugs, sex and oh-so-mellow California rock whose major exponents (The Eagles, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Crosy Stills and Nash, etc.) have been forgotten in the past few decades by those who never got past their punk obsessions. While not exactly considered "hip" in 2006 this music actually has a lot to offer.

Joni and Jackson were responsible for a succession of excellent singer songwriter LPs spread out amongst the entire decade. The Eagles were perhaps the biggest selling US band of the time. Linda Ronstadt--the most popular female rocker (if you can call her that) of the second half of the decade, never wrote her own material but recorded some better than average records which were unavoidable on '70s FM radio. Other luminaries such as J.D. Souther, Randy Newman, Van Dyke Parks and many others get generous coverage.

So pick it up. If this kind of music interests you at all you won't be dissapointed.

Summary: Sad!!
I thought "tell all" books were a way for writers to not only unload their soul to but to make amends as well as change their life for the better. I didn't get that feeling from Karrine Steffans. There was very little time spent on what she is doing now for herself and her son and too much time spent on her conquests.

This is an OK read if you are looking for some gossip!

Summary: What a ho!
This book had some interesting "tell all" info (loved the story about Shaq sweating so much on her bed that she had to flip the mattress---eeew, gross!), but it sure was not redemptive in any way. Right up until the end of the book she repeatedly talks about how she's working to straighten out her life and then she goes right back to prostitution (that's all it is---nothing more) with celebrities and industry people. She whines incessantly that "no one will help me" and yet she never did one thing to help herself go straight. She doesn't go to school or get a legit job. All she wants is wealth and the high life without having to earn it. She used the very people she accused of using her. She gave them sex, they gave her money---it was an even exchange until she got dumped (every time!). What she didn't like is that in prostitution there is no pension plan, unemployment or social security to protect you when you get dumped from your "job". She wanted these guys to keep funding her lifestyle long after her "relationships" were over. Doesn't work that way, hon. Sleep in the bed you made.
Summary: Disappointing
Well for starters, I picked up this book after reading an interview that Ms. Steffans did with VIBE magazine last year. I had expected this book to talk solely about Ms. Steffans and her perspective of her life as a "Video Vixen" (aka Video Ho)but my expectations weren't fulfilled. The most disappointing aspect of this book was that Ms. Steffans just seemed to be "throwing dirt" around about a lot of people with big names. I thought it was very tasteless and tacky to highlight a few "big" names and then to cower and leave out everyone saying that the ones she left out were still her friends. I almost laughed aloud when I read that statment. But, to top of all of the mud slinging, the book was very poorly written. I'm not sure how this book got throught the publisher. There were many typos and fragments throughout the book. If you have nothing better to do I would suggest renting this book from the local library, but rest asure that you won't read it again.

Summary: Love This Magazine!!
In my humble opinion, this is the best magazine for style and fashion advice. Even the advertisements are hip and informative, in terms of fashion and style. Of all the style magazines out there today, this is far and away the best of the best.
Summary: So much better than Vogue it's ridiculous.
InStyle is my favorite fashion magazine out there. It is much more reader-friendly than Vogue - much cleaner layout, the font is much easier to read, and the writing is clear, witty, and less dry. I've been reading InStyle for about 3 years, and each issue never disappoints me.

The focus of the magazine is definitely fashion, but there are also makeup tips and celebrity news. The magazine targets a much broader audience than more haute couture magazines like Vogue. My favorite section is "The Look" which highlights celebrity fashion and also has a section at the end that profiles a specific designer or label. InStyle also features many tips and recommendations on beauty products. The best issue of the year is without a doubt in March or April when they do "Best Beauty Buys." After polling beauty experts and testing hundreds of products, they feature the best beauty products in ever imaginable category. I've discovered some of my favorite beauty products through these issues, and it's nice to be able to trust a source without wasting your money on testing out expensive products that don't work for you. It is the best source for getting the most reliable products out there, from hair care products to makeup. I have seen several women at Sephora, clutching torn out pages from InStyle's Best Beauty Buys and frantically searching for the right mascara.

If you want to read an article about what pearls to wear with afternoon tea, try to sludge through Vogue's crowded layout and dry writing. I understand that Vogue is an institution now, but InStyle offers a much better alternatives, and providing articles that you actually want to read and tips you actually use.
Summary: The best fashion mag out there!!!
I love InStyle. I can easily spend an entire afternoon with each and every issue of InStyle. It is packed with the latest fashion trends and classic, timeless fashion. It shows what is hot, how to put outfits together, who wears what, and it doesn't try to dabble in other areas. It sticks to fashion and I like that. That is why I subscribe to it and probably always will. The best out there. MUCH better than Elle and likely even better than Vogue. I love it!
