Summary: A great learning book
I bought this book to learn more about Excel, and it did just that for me.
You will probably find it lacks depth if you are an advanced power user, but for someone wanting reference or just learning more about Excel this is a good buy.

Summary: As a quick-reference guide, it does the job well.
My confidence in this guide was tarnished somewhat due to the fact that the very first spreadsheet I opened on the accompanying disc (CH 22, "real estate.xls") had an obvious formula error. However, I purchased it as a quick reference guide rather than an full-on instructional guide, so for that purpose it has done the job well. It helps solve those "I know Excel does this task, but I just cannot remember how to tell it what I want!" problems with relative ease and the index has thus far been very detailed and accurate.

Summary: Íf you need fast answers, don't buy this book
This is supposed to be "the" bible on Excell. And it is; it has everything there's to know. BUT, if you need to get your answers fast in order to get your work done, don't buy this book. This book, as well as other "bibles" series, are design with a whole CD program with sample exercises. If you go thru them, step by step, you'll learn your stuff. But, if you just need to get into the topic of getting something done quickly, you will find that their explanation is EXACTLY AS THE HELP FUNCTION ON THE SOFTWARE. And then, the will give you an example from that CD program. Believe me, if you don't want to go thru the whole reading process and just need answers in a need basis, this book won't do it. The same applies to the Access Bible...

Just an echo of previous reviewers. This is my third or fourth Walkenback Excel book - and they are all excellent. He provides more not-obvious tips and tricks than any other author - that truly impact the efficiency and usability of your spreadsheets. Great reference.

I have enjoyed Excel 2003 Formulas, as I have been able to incorporate numerous examples into my spreadsheets at work, where I improved the quality of my work and streamlined my processes. It was well worth the investment for the text as it as paid for itself in the first week. The examples are straightforward and easy to understand. The chapters are well-organized.

this is a real good book if you want to get the basic of it.

Summary: I can't find anything on pivot tables
I already knew almost everything in this book, so I was disappointed when it arrived and I started looking through it. I ordered it hoping it would give me a simple explanation "for dummies" on what pivot tables are and how to create/work with them. They're not even listed in the index!

This book is great at covering all the very basic how-tos for someone who's never worked with Excel before; but it doesn't delve deeply enough into what the program can really do.

However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate. Summary: Serious Excel 2000 Problem The text book is great. I have many of Winston's other books and they are all great. The Palisade stuff works just fine. However, the StatPro Addin that accompanies this text does not work with MS Excel 2000. I contacted the IT guy that the authors directed me to--he was stumped. He just gave up and suggested I return my book for a refund because he could not figure out it out. Again, the book is great but the StatPro Addin sucks! Summary: No trouble with Excel I find the text and software a useful set of tools. It assumes familiarity with basic statistics and Excel, and builds on them to develop a powerfull ability to analize data and make decisions from it. Summary: Not for Beginners! Many errors.
The book is definitely not for teaching beginners, it is to prepare for the MOS cetification. However, almost every exercise has some sort of mistakes, either instructional, numeric, or formula type mistakes so that the exercises CANNOT be assigned as home work, but have to be done with the students in class and the "BUGS" worked out before they can do them on their own. It is a real shame to release a study book without proof reading it first and correcting the mistakes. An individual who knows Excel can get some good information from the book, but a student will be very confused if not very frustrated using it. Even as an instructor I get frustrated over the numerous errors. This book should be handed out for free with an additional offer of $20 to correct the mistakes. I'm sorry to have paid money for such a poorly proof read study instrument. I have one suggestion: I'll correct the errors if the author/publisher pays me for doing the work. Anita

This is the book you need to ;earn Excel. Included is a CD and the reading is very easy and understandable.

Summary: Run away from this book.
The first two chapters in this book are just a straightforward explanation of the Excel worksheet. The third chapter is where you are supposed to begin learning how to use Excel. The very first section in the chapter -- creating formulas to calculate values -- starts with an example that is wrong! You cannot perform the calculation given by the author by following his instructions. Instead, you receive an error message. This particular calculation is an absolutely basic one for using Excel. A visit to Microsoft's website does not provide you with a correction for that or anything else. Any reputable publisher -- O'Reilly for instance -- always has a link where you can find errors corrected. I stopped using the book at this point and purchased Excel 2003 Personal Trainer. I have not found an error in that book and I have completed four of the chapters. It appears Microsoft Excel 2003 Step by Step is in the best tradition of Microsoft products. Their operating system gives us viruses, infections, spyware, trojans, and adware. (This is why Microsoft's new operating system is called VISTA.) This book gives us the printed version of these problems -- poorly written text.

I have developed many database applications in other software programs. FileMaker is quite different from the rest, so I had to learn "by the book" to understand many of Filemaker's unique features, so I purchased Filemaker Pro 7 Bible and Using Filemaker Pro 7. The Bible book was totally useless, giving you details for beginners and lots of useless text for someone who already understands database development. The Using books gives details, both not a straight forward approach to developing a database.
But once FileMaker Pro 8: The Missing Manual came out (the first to cover version 8), I purchased it. To my surprise, it was so well written and loaded with practical advise, that I have read to book from end to end. It has excellent examples that I have used in the application I am developing for my company. I continually go back to the book for refreshers to concepts I learned in the book. The other two books hardly get touched!
If there is one book to buy to learn FileMaker Pro, this is it!

Touted as the "missing manual" I was expecting good guidance on concrete applications. I bought the software with the primary intent of converting various large Excel files into a database. The manual is large on theory and small on concrete help. My efforts to convert Excel files failed so often that I finally gave up trying. The book was of no help.
