Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: OOP and Actionscript 2.0 First of all, Colin makes this book an extension for his exploration of Flash Programming after his book ActionScript for Flash MX The Definitive Guide, which explain the ActionScript Fundamentals but Essential ActionScript 2.0 focuses almost exclusively on the Object-Oriented Programming aspects (in) ActionScript. The book is divided to three main sections:- 1. Part I: The ActionsScript 2.0 language: discusses the theory of OOP in general, and itsimplementation in Action Script in particular. Colin really is great in clarifying the concepts in a simple manner with examples. 2. Part II: Application Development: discusses the concepts for the practical application, which is covered in the first section with examples describe the process of designing and deploying and object-oriented application. 3. Part II: Design Pattern Examples: Colin means by that how to apply OOP strategies to a many approaches to various programming situations in Macromedia Flash. · New to OOP Programmers will learn the basics and how to apply it. · Familiar with OOP Programmers will gain experience with Flash-based OOP. · Experienced Flash developers and programmers coming from other languages will enjoy the deep coverage and expertise in Essential ActionScript 2.0. Finally and in sum, this book reviews the Object-Oriented definite structures in ActionScript 2.0 realistically to get benefit from applying these concepts through the abstract theory and the practical tips. Summary: A great and comprehensive learning experience!! Let me first say that i had no programming (OOP) knowledge at all, the only developing i did was in AS.The book took me step by step into the world of OOP,explaining every concept and idea of OOP(both AS and other langs). This book is even understandable for people whom English is not their mother tongue(like me)...so...this is a good one. Summary: Worth collection for advanced Action Script 2 code samples and concepts Colin Moock does a great job here by writing computer code / projects that cover a lot of ground. One particular trait of his writing is that he does not reserve any shortcomings in Flash/Flash Player itself, and good advice for how to write hacks around this. Colin also goes into good, thoughtful details on how Flash handles objects. The last object oriented language I programmed was C++ and this was a great refresher to OOP. I highly recommend this book to anyone of all levels of Flash scripting that wants to improve his/her programming skills. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Must Have for the Dreamweaver User You will not be disappointed with this book. I have read about 12 different Dreamweaver books over the past 4 years, and so far this is the best I have seen. After reading this book, I sat wondering why other software books are not written nearly as well. This book is chuck full of so much important, useful, interesting and inspiring information that I will be looking for other books in this series as well as keeping an eye out for other books authored by McFarland. One of the great things with this book is that it is meat, but with a great flow to each of the areas covered - its not just information, but extremely well put together and well written. There is an intro to each section that is not overly wordy. There are many sections where there are step by step instructions. A number of the chapters have a tutorial toward the end (over 130 pages - the cover says) for the reader to practice what they have just learned directly with Dreamweaver. Another extremely helpful aspect to this book that I rarely if ever find in others is that almost ever 3rd or 4th page has a box with some very cool "Boy am I glad you told me about that" info. They are entitled "Power Users; Clinic" and "Workaround Workshop". The book would be worth it just for the gold mine of very rich bits and pieces of powerful tips and tricks to use. A great deal of thought went into each one of these blocks of info, as has the entire book. The screen prints are not overly used, but when they are they are very relavent. I have been content to read most of the book without even turning on my computer, because of the fine job of ample description and images. If you are going to be waiting around to find something related to Studio 8, keep this book in mind when they update it for that version. Summary: Hard to imagine a better book OK, I'm a graphic artist. But before buying this book I knew absolutely nothing about HTML and web page design. Within a week I had a professional looking website up and running. I'm starting a new business and I'm beginning to even think about on-line shopping (which is also covered in the book). The book has given me the confidence to take on anything web-related. If you're hesitating, don't. This book is the panacea. Summary: Am I the only one giving this book a critical review? I have found this book useful... the tutorials are pretty good and there is alot of information, but like someone else here has said, it is a little wordy. I think that this book would have been better if there were more tutorials and less description as I tend to fall asleep after a page or two of descriptive text (web design jargon has the ability to make my mind wander to beaches with girls in high cut bikini's etc etc). Maybe I am being critical because I have tried to read this book from start to finish, and failed miserably. As a reference guide this is great though, and like I said before the tutorials are very useful (just wish there were more of them as I learn more through practical usage). Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: This is THE book I've been a professional Flash user for many years, and got to the point where I could pull off just about anything using tweens, and simple actionscript like gotoAndPlay();, etc. But the time came recently when I was truly ready to learn Actionscript. I looked at some other books, and even bought the Actionscript for Dummies book, which is fine if you don't really want to learn to script, but only want to fake your way through it. I already knew how to do this. Then I bought this book. I can't believe it. I'm actully scripting! Just like that! Where was this book when I was trying to learn how to code in Flash 4? It didn't exist yet, that's where. But, now, luckily for you, here is THE BOOK FOR LEARNING FLASH ACTIONSCRIPT. BUY IT NOW!!! Josh Mehler www.translucentstudios.com Summary: If you're writing ActionScript you need this book I continue to be impressed by the depth and accuracy of this book, it has become an invaluable resource for writing ActionScript. This book combines an excellent overview of ActionScript with an extremely detailed reference section. I originally thought I wouldn't need the reference section (I could just find it on the web, right?) but the reference section is the part I turn to most often. My only knock on the book is the relatively light treatment of ActionScript 2.0 (the vast majority of material is written in AS 1.0). Thanks to Colin for providing this excellent text. Summary: Can't live without it. if you do lots of flash work, you really can't work without this book. great for reference and for excelling and growing in your work. a must have. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent Starter book I buy every Flash Bible because they are the most comprehensive guides to Flash. This is a great book for people just starting out in flash because it will take your from beginner to intermediate Flash designer. It is also an excellent reference guide for the more experienced users. Summary: This book is the awesomest!!! Everyone in my office has a copy on their desk (if not multiple copies). I saw Snow Dowd talk at Flash In The Can. She is extremely knowledgeable in all matters flash related. I did not get a chance to attend Mr. Reinhardt's seminars, but I can only imagine the interesting concepts he had to share. The support website (http://www.flashsupport.com/) is also a resource of immeasurable value. All in all, when it comes to Flash and Action Script I would say Snow and Robert are the place to go for up to date cutting edge info (although I'm not sure I agree with Robert's anti-tween stance). Summary: Great start . . . I've used this book for my Web Animation class and while it doesn't tell you every little thing you need to know about Flash. It's a great book to get started, especially if you need to work off of real examples then the cd-rom files included would really help. Although I wished that this book covered certain subjects in more detail and included more tutorials . . . This book would be good for beginners and maybe even intermediate users could use this as a reference. It gives you a nice balance of Flash animation and web design. However, after reading this book, you'll probably end up buying more books on Flash like me. If you're going to be focusing more on Flash web design, you might want to buy the Flash MX 2004 ActionScript Bible as well. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The best programming book I've ever read I have been through the ringer with programming books. I've taken the Microsoft cert. courses, I worked with computer systems since I was a kid (I'm 28 now) and I have bought any book you can imagine. This book, however, was the first book that actually gave me practical uses and told me exactly what I was doing. It made total sense and made me excited to program. For the longest time I have been looking for a book that can explain to me when to use specific datatypes, functions, if/else statements and so on. This book was the first to do that and I have, in the two weeks since I have gotten the book, been able to land two flash web design projects with a couple more in the works as we speak. This book has changed my programming life and has completely opened my eyes to the power of actionscript and many other programming languages. I only wish that Shane and Lynda would write more books in this fashion using other languages like Java or C#. This is a fantastic book and I am happy that I bought it. Summary: Great Tool for the Intermediate Flash User This is an excellent book. I have used the previous HOT books: Dreamweaver MX and Flash MX. However, this one gets into more interesting Flash techniques such as building a video and MP3 player. These books are always easy to follow and nothing is ever left unexplained. It's as if they know where you might have made a mistake and show you how to fix it. I definitely recommend all of the Hands On Training series. Summary: H.O.T Books This is the first book I have read from this author. I am very pleased with what this book taught and I have recommended it to many others. It is in my opinion not a real intermediate book but more like part 2 of a beginner book for coding. I think it could have gotten a little deeper. That is most likely just my take. I was not new to flash. I bought this book as a refresher and as a book that would update me and get me ready for Studio 8. I suggest this book to anyone starting in flash or who have basic knowledge of flash and anyone wanting to get a good soldi grasp of action script. The action script they use to teach is great and how they explain stuff is also wonderful. It is a bit slow but in the scheme of things would you rather him go fast and confuse you or slow and slightly bore you. I did play the movie files on fast forward and you could understand everything perfectly. So pick this book up and add it to your collection. I do believe it will be a great addition to anyones library. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Great book! There are lots of cool effects in this book. It will be a bit overwhelming due to the extent of the actionscript but these effets can be copied and added to your website or movie. I am going to keep the book and use it again and again. Summary: 100 of the most needed tricks for creative Flash works Flash MX 2004 creative work depends -in most of it- on tricks and mind digging. However, like other members in the Hack family, Sham Bhangal's book (Flash Hack) has dug the minds and came up with 100 of the most interesting Flash tricks that are distinguished in a very smart way depending on their type. In this book, found a group of the tips and tricks for beginner and professional designers and developers. Beginner designers and developers can develop their ability to create their own tricks through reading this book thoroughly, as beside describing his thoughts within each trick topic, Sham has attached at the end of each trick a Final Thoughts part as a conclusion to ensure that the reader has completely grasped his idea. Summary: Very Worthwhile! This is a member of the Hacks series published by O'Reilly, a series of books noted for their ability to answer the perennial "gee, I wish I could..." problem. (though for most people this would be phrased a good deal less politely. At least it was for me when I was learning Flash) This book is no exception. I have been using Flash myself since about version 4 and while I don't spend all my time with it, I have developed a talent for finding hidden features and methods in a variety of platforms and programs, and still I was impressed by a number of the techniques outlined in this book. There are some which I have, as yet, not really found a use for, but there are a few that have answered some of the lingering questions about things that I have always found very silly about Flash. The book covers Flash MX 2004, though many of the features are not limited to that version, and where they are the author has made this very clear, in fact the author has kindly translated some of the code examples to earlier versions of actionscript where necessary and/or possible, (well, flash 6 anyway.) The organization of the book is also a point in its favor as a reference work for the "alternatively trained" professional. Where many manuals and instruction books are arranged by tool, this book is organized by result. This is a boon to those of us who, having a problem with (for example,) sound, will go through the manual for all the elements to do with sound functions, only to find that the bit that we needed is covered under UI. There are also workflow tips, neat tricks, performance enhancers, Flash bug workarounds, undocumented features, and even tips about how to prevent opportunistic theft of your flash content. There is not room to cover all of the 100 hacks available to you, and even the range of the chapters is quite extensive. Nor does it make much sense to cover all of it in a linear way, as this is probably not how you will read this either. When I first picked up the book, I went down the table of contents and spent the next couple of minutes rifling back and forth through the book going "Aha!" and "ohhh..." This of course makes covering the book in a general way something of a headache. For me, some of the most interesting tips were those devoted to the animation part of the workflow. Despite being formally trained as an animator, my introduction to Flash was primarily from the coding direction. As a result, Hack #74, External Script Editors was of only passing interest to me as I stopped using the internal script editor long ago. Hack #62, Right and Middle Mouse Buttons, well, I use a Macintosh, and tend to regard other mouse buttons with some suspicion (or at least scorn.) All of Chapter 9, Performance and Optimization, however, should be required reading for all Flash developers. Most of us will know some fraction of the tips here, but will benefit immeasurably from having read the other one or two that we did not previously know, or pay attention to. Chapter 5 is probably best approached in the spirit of "that's pretty neat, but..." as there is little reason to include a 3D Engine in a flash movie other than to be able to say that you could do it. The basic physics parts, however, can lend a bit of extra 'oomph' to an interface. Amongst the Hacks in chapter 3, there are several related bits about how to make repeating tiles that can be programatically spread (and varied) across a field. Interestingly, Hack 18 contains nothing about Flash at all, and is simply a breakdown of the method of making repeated tiles easily. I don't know why, but I find that kind of digression refreshing. Some of the hacks are improvements or refinements of earlier hacks. One of the animation hacks outlines the method of using overlapping loops of sequences that have a prime number of frames to simulate non repeating motion, that the author incidentally describes as being one of his first attempts at this sort of thing. This hack is immediately followed by a method describing how to get the "Matrix" effect of falling numbers by using single frame movie clips and a script. All in all, this is a very good book to have as a reference. One good read through and you will say to yourself at least a couple of times, "Why have I not been doing it that way all along?" Later on you will find yourself remembering that "other" trick and go back to the book and look again. Since first reading it I have convinced my company to purchase it as an office reference, and I would recommend it to anyone else, both the beginner, (to save yourself the trouble,) and the pro (ditto) Summary: |

Wouldn't mind doing business with them again in the future! Summary: Macromedia Flash MX 2004: Visual QuickStart Guide Straightforward and well written. I like the sidebars that provide tips and extra related items. Summary: Great reference book, crappy design book Imagine buying a simple electronic device, bringing it home, and then discovering a 600-page step-by-step directional manual for setting it up. This is how the visual quickstart guide explains designing a web site. This book has a full segment on how to use a pen tool. We all know how to use the pen tool- a monkey can use the pen tool. If you can coherently read a scientific manual- have at it, if you're like me, and you need to put it in practice and have a sample project to work on (I realize I have been spoiled by the Classroom In a Book series), then you cannot use this book. All I wanted to do was to expand my graphics ability, not become a master Flash guru. Summary: |
