Summary: This book really is a must have for F1 fanatics The book really brings many explanations about F1 technologies. Is very detailled and it has very good desings inside. The only thing that I really felt missed is the actual technologies. (From '02 until now) Summary: Wow The book I was looking for years ago as a Toyota Atlantic mechanic,... not too technical but with plenty to think about. Plus it's from SAE. I wish it had a longer aero treatment 'tho (but that's just where my interests lie) Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Brilliant Technical Book This book lit me up on Formula One. The author's writing style is witty, interesting, informative and conversational, making it an easy read despite the technical nature of the subject. You'll learn about how the Formula One car is a compromise; engineering ideals vs. mechanical necessity, and technological development vs. the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile(FIA) regulations. The author's enthusiasm is infectious - especially the idea of the engine and gearbox as a single unit, which, along with revolutionary engine designs will never be realised due to FIA regulations. He remains objective about the FIA considering that its rules often stymie development. I like the scenario that provides the book's structure (a conversation with enthusiasts about putting together the ideal car) as you also learn how much it costs to build a car; whether to have the engine designed in-house, what you'll pay to a major supplier like Ferrari, and where on the car significant gains in horsepower can be made. I haven't read other F1 books to give a comparison, but I highly recommend this book to anyone. Summary: The Nuts and Bolts of Formula One Matchett's latest offering opens the readers' eyes to the pinnacle of motorsport engineering that is Formula One and he does not disappoint. Discussions on this book center around a car's "stressed members" namely the monocoque, engine and gearbox. Also mentioned is the design of the fuel tank which I find particularly interesting in light of BAR's "disqualification" from the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix for essentially using the same design as described here. The reader also gets to differentiate between a pull rod vs a push rod suspension, twin keel vs single keel, oversteer vs understeer. Quite interesting also are Matchett's insights into the tire war. My only beef with this book is that for a technical introduction to Formula One, it should contain more schematic drawings so that a reader who is not a mechanical engineer can readily grasp it without going through secondary sources. The context in which this book unfolds i.e. in an airport lounge among a group of stranded passengers seems out of place and sometimes gets in the way of the technical detail. Little shortcomings notwithstanding, this has proven to be quite a good technical introduction to Formula One and inevitably makes the reader look beyond the drivers and pay closer attention to their steeds which are the real works of art. Summary: Keeps Getting Better!! Absolutely stunning explanation of high tech world of F1. Hoping next one is internal view of f1 politics. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Beautiful book , short on technical details This is a beautifully produced book, with many high-quality photographs and drawings. A perfect gift for the F1 enthusiast, especially as an introduction. It devotes a chapter to every aspect of an F1 race car, and is lavishly illustrated and well written. The author, having designed F1 cars himself. obviously knows his topic. However, it falls seriously short when it comes to technical issues. The chapter devoted to the engine, for example, is woefully short and devoid of any detail. The technical challenges these teams encounter in producing a naturally aspirated 3 liter engine than can live at 14-18,000 rpm, produce 800hp and survive for 200+ miles must be tremendous. But only the most obvious issues are addressed (low reciprocating mass, etc.), and at a superficial level. The engine is only described in the broadest terms. I was surprised when I realized I was at the end of the chapter, having read what seemed like a preface. Considering the expertise of the author and the fact that he was describing a car that trounced the competition in 2000, there should have been more depth to the book. After all, Ferrari did make him wait four years before publishing. Summary: A book for every Formula One enthusiast This book is very well put together with a right blend of images & text. Covers every aspect involved in designing & building a formula one car with a focus on the Ferrari F1-2000. Being an engineer I would have loved it to be bit more technical but there are a lot of other books that achieve this. This book is for any enthusiast introducing himself to the technical aspects of a modern F1 car. Keeps away complex equations & explains everything in simple & elegant manner. I recommend it highly. Summary: Coffee table material for the engineer First, what this book isn't: an engineering textbook with step by step blueprints for the Ferrari F1-2000. What this book is: a great compilation of the technical elements of Formula 1 and Ferrari. The best secrets of F1 still remain secrets in this book. But it does offer glimpses into a hodgepodge of technical and sporting topics: Ferrari's F1 history, monocoque design, safety considerations, fuel technology, tires, aerodynamics, and the Ferrari team structure itself. The pages are populated with tons of pictures, graphs, diagrams, cutaway views of the car, CAD simulations, and telemetry charts. While the 260 pages of material is far from shallow reading, none of Ferrari's racing competitors would gain an edge by reading this. But it is a great text for the layman engineer who's an F1 fanatic, and great for the coffee table. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: The pictures save! Very nice and emotionally pictures! But where is the text for these touching pictures?? Its a pitty! Summary: the human eye of a very technical sport On the cover of this book is a portrait of Jack Brabham, "smiling Jack", the face of a winner - tired, gritty, but highly pleassed with himself. This wonderful black-and-white picture epitomizes this whole book of motor racing portraits from the 60ies. Schlegelmilch is the man for the job. He has followed F1 since the early sixties, he has witnessed triumphs and tragedies and has always been able to portrait the human side of this high-pace, high-glitz and high-tech sport. The sixties saw incredible technical advancements in motor-racing, but these advancements sometimes came at a terrible price. It was also a decade where some of the greatest drivers of all time left their mark on the sport, like Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart. Schlegelmilch is the master of natural light and so many times has been able to capture that special moment, gesture or expression in a driver's face that says more than a 1000 words. Even if you are not an F1 or racing fan, this book presents black-and-wite portrait photography at the highest level and is a joy to look at. Summary: Excellence in black & white motor-racing photography. Schlegelmilch has been in the profession of Formula One photography since 1962 and is highly regarded by his peers and his customers. The reason for that high esteem is displayed for all to see in this publication. Portraiture of the highest order of an era in motor-racing which will never be repeated. Rainer eschews artificial lighting....he invariably uses what natural light is available and, as a result, most of his images have an artistic quality rarely seen in motor-racing photographs. A fine publication at a most reasonable price and one that should be in the the collection of every Formula One enthusiast. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: For the Non_Techi Enthusisit who would like to be As a fan of open wheel racing and F1 in particular this book is an absolute joy. I have always marveled at the team aspect of the sport. Drive and engineer working along side of the mechanics as a team to produce the fastest car on Sunday. TV couldn't show you how this is being done, but you knew it was happening. The engineers were reviewing the data, talking to the drivers and then focusing the mechanics to get the car that extra 10th of a second. Then back at the factory, the aerodynamicist are working 24/7 to get even more out of the car. This book shows the fruits of their collective efforts and explains them in a way the fan and the engineer can understand and appreciate. A first rate father's day gift and an excellent choice for any other occasions for a racing fan. I'm going back and buying the rest of the series! Summary: Stunning Detail of the Greatest F1 Car Ever The F2002 was easily one of the most dominant Formula One cars in recent history. Not since the early '90 Williams or the last '80 McClarens has there been such a dominant car in one season. In addition, Ferrari had the best driver on their side, which resulted in one of the most lopsided Championship battles in F1 history. In short, Ferrari's constructor points for the year were exactly the sum of all other teams that participated in the 2002 Championship. And it was all due to the radical car design that was leaps in bounds above both its predecessor, the strong F2001, and all of the combatants. This book does an amazing job, as it has done every year since inception, in recreating the super-detailed nuances of each Formula One car that participated in the Championship and its evolution from the prior season car to the car that closed it out in Suzuka. In addition, the book gives a preview of the 2003 cars that just wrapped the season. It would be better if this was more timely, but given the level of detail its amazing that Mr. Piola gets this done five years after the season wraps! Overall, an amazing book for the F1 fanatics who give pause to the detail of an F1 car and the struggles teams go through to get the aerodynamics just right. Yet given the detail, the well drawn pictures make it easy to see the changes made from race to race, and the verbiage is easy enough for a non-F1 nut to follow. Fantastic book, look forward to the 2003 edition. It is a bit Ferrari-focused given the author is Italian and Ferrari have dominated the Constructor's trophy for the past five seasons. Summary: |
