Summary: Great slice of a terrible period in time
The writing, devlopment of characters with a backdrop of the worst period in history makes this novel informative and poignant. Knowing that Ms Nemirovsky was living during this time
and had to end her book where she did because she was deported to Aushwitz where she died, makes this book feel more like a memoir than a novel. A must read for anyone who is interested in this period or for anyone who just likes to read a well crafted book
Summary: Tyranny: Man's curse from hell
Hitler, Pol Pot--mastermind of the Cambodian holocaust--Fidel Castro, and thousands of tyrants throughought history have three qualities in common: inborn hatred for humankind, delusions of grateness, and sadism.(Read my memoir; "Adios, Havana") These creatures of subhuman strain are cancers that eventually destroy the same societies that brought them to power. Though fictional, "Suite Francaise" vividly depicts the horrors these lunatics can inflict into their own brothers and sisters. Great book! It should be read by the many who do not appreciate the bountiful blessings we have in America.
Summary: Beautiful Mind
This book moves me. The author beautifully depicts daily scenes in the lives of the conqueror and the conquered. She finds beauty and humor amidst the monumental losses of war. She seduces with words so wonderfully choreographed I find myself reading a passage over and over just to savor her mastery of language. That Ms Nemirovsky is able to to enlighten and enrich us with her artistry under the circumstances in which she found herself elevates her to the status of Angel and reminds that no one can rob us of our hearts and minds. I am grateful for the survival of this manuscript.

Summary: Delightful
Having been a student of german for several years now, I have been able to study from several texts and I find this one the most pleasant. I appreciate the layout and the vibrant colors which help to make the book more fun. I wouldn't say either that the book is tough - however it is what it says it is - an intermediate text. Anyone with the appropriate background and a desire to learn more German could get through this book. I would recommend it - it is my favorite german text.
Summary: Decent
I have been studying German for three years now and this book is probably the best I have ever had. This is not to say that it is excellent though. The book's layout is somewhat confusing and the non-Grammer sections could be a lot more clear. The Author's use of vocabulary can also be intimidating at times for the beginner. Overall though, a decent textbook that could do with a revision or two.
Summary: Kaleidoskop - A good mix of topics
I am a student in my third year of German tutoring and this is my fourth text book. It is refreshingly different when compared to the other texts that I have used to date. It mixes in relatively current articles from magazines and utilizes videotape to help with listening exercises. We have not used the audio tapes at all. It has a good variety of topics and exercises that are supported by the grammar sections at the rear of the text. The grammar is not embedded in the chapters. Instead, it is in sequential sections at the end of the book which correspond to the chapter progression at the start of the book. I definitely prefer it over the Themen and Wie Geht's books.

Summary: Every bit as good as Pimsleur German I
Pimsleur Language Programs products are among the best-selling audio language courses available. `Organic learning' seeks to approximate the conditions in which ordinary language-learning takes place. The process is almost entirely aural, supplemented only minimally-or at the student's discretion, not at all-by reference to reading lessons after each half-hour lesson.

Clearly, Dr. Pimsleur and his disciples-I use the word advisedly, as a glance at promotional and instructional materials will demonstrate-have done their pedagogical homework. Utilizing the spectacular power of the brain for on-the-hoof language analysis and replication, the Pimsleur Language Programs lure their listeners into meaning-rich dialogues, providing only the information required for one to respond. The closest thing to a grammatical concept that a student hears is a brief warning that `this is the form used with feminine words'. Yet with a little effort, the student intuits her way to the correct and timely use of all that grammar describes.

This is an extremely productive approach at the level of basic conversational skills that is the bread and butter of Pimsleur's products. The course writers have found just the level at which to challenge the student without counterproductive frustration. One is encouraged to achieve 80% control of a unit before moving on. Many students will accomplish this in most units on the first try. Yet the approach in these three volumes is never simplistic, reducing the urge to be somewhere else or engaged in a more advanced section to the vanishing point.

Pimsleur Language Programs has populated websites with two highly sellable language-learning concepts: the `principle of anticipation' and `graduated interval recall'. The former refers to the interval during which the student is challenged to retrieve information to which he has been exposed, occasionally take some small step in the processing of it, and then utilize that information in a response. PLP has refined just the right intervals to facilitate prompt but unhurried responses.
`Graduated interval recall' refers to the time lag between the initial learning of a language component and its subsequent reintroduction in a new conversation. Here, too, the Pimsleur method shows its debt to years of practice and research. By my lights, they do this perfectly.

Regionally and socially, PLP's German course(s) aim at an `educated' dialect that will prepare the student to be conversant throughout Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

German I, II, and III are available in cassette tape and CD versions, packaged attractively and with sufficient ruggedness to survive both winter and summer Midwestern temperatures in my car.
Summary: Sehr Gut
I took two years of German in high school, which was some decades ago, and after a ski trip to Austria I decided to brush up on my German. I've bought numerous books, dvds, tapes, etc. and for learning conversational German this has been far and away the best. It's pricey, no doubt, but it's very, very well done and very user friendly. I had a professor in college who said we learn the most in an area of "just manageable difficulty". In other words, stretched and challenged but not made to despair. This is the arena the Pimsleur cd/tapes work in.
I liked this one (German II) so well, I also bought 3 and 4. Two is the most well done, the guy on three sounds a bit like he's being held against his will, but the folks on this one are engaging and pleasant. They combine techniques of having you repeat German phrases with having you answer questions in German (can be a bit challenging) and a couple of other techniques. There is a bit of the unavoidable "canned" feel to the conversations, but nowhere near as much as in other tapes I've tried. I felt like I learned a lot and on a trip to Switzerland this year I was able to understand a lot and be conversational.
As I said III and IV, especially IV are not quite so well done, but II is excellent, and a lot cheaper than the average German course at a college would be. The only thing it lacks is much help with syntax, you probably need to plow through a German grammar book on your own for that.
Summary: The best of the Pimsleur German series.
If you thought Pimsleur German I helped you to learn German, you really must move onto Pimsleur German II. It is, without a doubt, one of the best tools you could possibly use to progress from barely being able to get your message across to being able to express not only what you want, but what you think about things.

Both Pimsleur German I and II were updated in 2002, so they represent the best of decades of trying to perfect the language learning experience. What you will find in Pimsleur German II can't easily be found anywhere else, because it teaches you to speak the way Germans speak, complete with the little inflections that you would use without even thinking in your native language. I've never seen such things in any other program.

If you have the means, move onto Pimsleur German II as soon as possible after finishing Pimsleur German I. It will put you light years ahead in only a few short weeks.

Summary: The Best Language Course of Its Kind
The following comments come from a rank beginner. I have had no prior study of German at school or otherwise.

Ignore the many complaints of price of this course. When you hear the quality of the recording, the professional speakers on this CD (4 different speakers, three native Germans and one American narrator), and realize the research that went into its design, you would expect it to cost much more. It is difficult to compare, but I would guess this course to be equivalent to about one semester of college German. The difference is in the focus. It is about getting as much useful language as quickly as possible, and the focus on travel vocabulary: How far to Berlin? How much does a beer cost (it's German, you have to have a beer!)? How do you get to Goethe Street, etc.

But where the course really shines, is how they've hidden the complex grammar of German in simple questions and answers. You learn the way a child learns his first language, by "feeling" what sounds right in a sentence. Each lesson is a strong challenge. Not hard enough to make you quit, and not easy enough to get boring, but keeps you reaching and concentrating. I believe many studies have found this delicate balance to be the most effective in language learning. I did most lessons two or more times with good results. They suggest moving on when you get about 80% of the lesson.

The course is read by native speakers, a man and a woman. Each has a slightly different accent. At first I found this disconcerting, which one is right? But just like in English, different people speak differently. So you kind of find an average and just keep trying to copy both of them. Keep a bottle of water next to your CD player, German works your throat!

After lesson 10, they start having reading exercises. They seem overly simple, only about 15 to 20 words lasting 3 to 5 minutes. But I found these exercises extremely helpful for troublesome words. I am a visual person, and so I "see" the words when they are spoken. This helped when I couldn't follow the pronunciation.

I am on lesson 24 of 30 and am starting to look into volume II. I hope it is as good.

Stick with this CD daily (30 minutes) and you will have the ability to have very simple conversations in German, order at a restaurant, buy gas, and ask for directions. Not bad for 2 to 3 months of minimal effort.

One last personal comment. I am not a natural at foreign languages, my mind works too hard translating and trying to get it perfect. This program forces me to move faster, to work within the blank space (which is carefully timed), just do my best and move on. This has been very helpful to make my brain "feel" the language. I am learning German, and I am having fun at it. I hope you will to.

Summary: Bookchip version is better and easier to use,
Bookchip version is better and easier to use, ( 3 bookchips compared to 52 cds) I bought bookchips and cds, send cds back. Buy Bookchip (Audiofy Bookchip) instead.
Summary: A better way for a beginner to learn a language
First off let me say that these programs are great. There are ways to buy them where you can spend well less than $200 -- and lets face it. You can turn around and sell them used and recoup much of your investment.

I studied Spanish throughout high school, and was in fact a Spanish minor in college. But I still struggle with basic conversations at times, because I can't put the sentence structure together without thinking through the grammar I learned in school.

With these CD's, I find myself being able to make the responses almost subconsciously. It IS true that Pimsleur does not give you rich vocabulary. But that is not the point. You learn the sound, structure and flow of the German language into which you can inject vocabulary you learn from other sources.

I will say that the male and female speakers do pronounce some words differently -- it could be regional variations, but I have not studied enough German yet to really know.

Summary: Awesome
This is, without a doubt, the best introductory German Text there is. I have tried several and this one answers my questions. I have tried many systems and this is the one. If your school did not select this one, buy it for yourself. Of course, you will need the CD's and the Workbook but if you insist on learning German this is the way.

Summary: Good for a continuing student who needs a review
This book set was used for my most recent German class. I found it helpful, but I was the only one in my class with any background in the language. Most of my classmates found it confusing. I wouldn't recommend it for someone just starting to learn German, but it's certainly a good "review" for speakers who need to brush up on their skills. Side note: the spoken examples on the cassette tape supplements are very fast, and have an odd accent, but are necessary to complete all work in the Arbeitsbuch.
Summary: Kontakte: The gateway to fine German
This very detailed book is a perfect solution for a textbook in German. The format and layout is easy for one to navigate through the book. As studied through many German texts and this one stands out for being so clear on the subject.
Summary: This book is useless!
I am a regular person attending a NON-competitive community college and let me tell you all that this book stinks! It is entirely in German and makes no sense at all. Nobody in our class can even figure out what they want you to do. I have taken two years of German in high school and I am totally lost in the very first chapter. I think this book is poorly organized. If you must use this book for your class, I would consider looking around for a German class that you can transfer in which does NOT use this book!

Summary: Not what I had hoped...
This book does offer some great visuals but the character is not likable enough - even enough to pity at the horrors he creates - to want to know what or even why he does the things he does. It does open your eyes (or nose!) to a sense that, I at least, don't pay too much attention to living in our sterile society and I did give my little nephew a big sniff when I saw him and realized that he does indeed smell like caramel BUT still not enough to recommend this book. It's just too dark (and I like dark) without a point.
Summary: Perfume
It is difficult for me to find books I enjoy reading. I loved this book. I locked into the character very early and was pulled through the book wanting to know more about him and how he would evolved.
Summary: A tragedy of an outsider
I recently joined a book group with my girlfriend, and Perfume was the first of the list of novels we had to read.

Set in eighteenth century France, it tells the story of a man who is born with a supernatural sense of smell, so acute that he can distinguish between thousands of smells around him at any one time. But he is abused and neglected as a child, and so he grows up bitter and twisted, determined to have his revenge - on the whole of humanity. He becomes the best perfumer in the world, able to make the most beautiful scents known to man - but this is not his goal. His goal is far more horrifying - to make the ultimate scent with which to control the world - but its ingredients are terrifying...

Grenouille, the man who can "see" the world through his sense of smell, is a classic anti-hero - morally dubious and physically repulsive - but he is treated sympathetically by the author. His actions, while horrible throughout, are fascinating - leading us to ask whether we too are complicit in his actions since we are voyeurs.

There are a number of motifs that occur throughout the book - creation vs destruction, beauty vs repulsion, genius vs tradition, and most importantly o all, nature vs nurture. You might also say that within the book is a critique of the way the eighteenth century saw itself as an age of enlightenment. Grenouille himself is the archetype of the outsider, doomed to live beyond the rest of humanity.

I thought this was a very good book. You could say it was like a historical case from the X-Files. It was incredibly original and sensuous in its descriptions (which are obviously in contrast to the minimalist styles you so often see today). Above all, it made me appreciate my own sense of smell all the more - time for a shower!
