Summary: Wonderful
This is an excellent book. Like many of the reviewers, I have been frustrated over the years by the contradictory recommendations of the various teachers, teaching methods and authors. Nicklaus and Hogan say keep the ball in the same position off your left instep for all clubs. Harvey Penick, Tommy Armour (and Jim Hardy) say move it back as you go from driver to the short irons. Byron Nelson and Harvey Penick say you should stand as close to the ball as possible. A recent instructor told me to stand further away and lean over more. What's going on? Now I know. Different types of swings have different requirements. I quickly realized that I had been wandering back and forth between the two types of swings, sometimes hitting good shots and having a good round, sometimes even a good week, but soon losing it. Jim Hardy gives advice that is specific to the two types of swing. My only complaint is that there is not enough information to determine what type of swing would work best for me, but I was so impressed by the book that I bought the tapes. He must have realized that this was a weakness of the book. In the first tape, Hardy has Tom Pernice, Jr. demonstrate the amount of shoulder turn necessary for the one plane swing: the left shoulder has to be able to turn right under the chin, the right shoulder pointing up at the sky. I'm afraid that I'm just not this limber (I could never do yoga with my friends who are into it). So my decision seems to be made. This didn't surprise me too much, because in the past couple of weeks, I've been trying both types of swing, and while I never slice with the one plane and I've hit some great shots, I don't seem to hit it quite as far (and I've hit a few vicious hooks with it). The two plane swing it will have to be.
Summary: Great Book about 2 diff. basic swings
Just to let ROBCHG and everyone else know... Tiger Woods HAD a 2 plane swing while Butch Harmon was his swing coach. So, when he was younger and up till he switched swing coaches (to Hank Haney)he did have a 2 plane swing. He recently switched his swing to a 1 plane swing when he hired Hank Haney on as his new coach. There isn't one day that goes by that some golf magazine or show doesn't compare his 2 different swings side by side. His current, and better swing, is a one plane swing. Overall, this book is great for a golfer to sort out his swing type and work on the fundamentals for that type.
Summary: Helpful, Great Insight with confusing presentation
I saw an ad on GOLF channel for the DVD ($100) while on vacation. I bought the book immediately on my return. I first read many of these reviews. They come from different knowledge and experience levels analogous to the 1 and 2 plane swing differences. I discovered that my woods were more 1-plane and my irons more 2-plane (actually 3-plane due to a hitch at the top). So, if I tried a tip for all my clubs my woods or irons, one would improve while the other would deteriorate. Now I know why. The next 2 weeks in my after-work league I tried to stick with only the 1-plane swing for all my clubs. My game was shorter by half a club, but more consistently playable. I shot my best 2 scores this year (by 3 strokes--it's a nine hole league), and it should have been even 2 better except for a bad putting day.

I agree that after differentiating between the two types of swings and helping the reader determine which they have (or want), it would be clearer if everything about one swing would be placed together, followed by everything about the other. The current layout makes you work for the information pertinent to the path you choose to follow. Regardless, a great insight and help to me. (P.S. I might now try 1-plane for woods and 2-plane for irons again--but with the understanding of what applies to each.)

Summary: He's a jerk
I am sorry I bought this book. This is the most self serving, excuse making peice of tripe I have ever read. I have high regard for John Daly as a golfer, but as a person......Well, I really shouldn't go that far, but how does someone feel about themselves after doing some the things he's done? As a writer, let's just say he should stick to golf. I've said enough already. Please remember this is just my opinion. I wish John the best in everything he does and I sincerely hope he gets control of the gambleing monster. If he can beat alcohol, he can beat this one, too.
Summary: Poorly written, woe is me tale
I wanted to like this book. I was looking forward to some light summer reading and hoped this would be the ticket. It is light - on substance - and the writing is truly horrendous. The book is replete with typos and poor grammar. I understand wanting Daly's "voice" to come through in the writing, but at times, the folksy, down home, grammatically incorrect language is overbaked. I came away not liking John Daly the person. The book is full of self-pity and Daly seems to revel in his faults. I was very disappointed and I wouldn't recommend buying this book. There are much better ways to spend your time and money this summer. The only good aspect of the book is that it is an incredibly quick read.
Summary: Sad
I loved this book but I think its very sad that John has wasted his talent. I believe he had more natural talent than Tiger, but we'll never know.

Summary: Great Help
I must say this book has been a great help to my golf game. I recommend it to anyone looking to better their score.
Summary: Nice book for the starters to read
I liked this book. This is great book to have for a beginner, one will know the fundamentals and once those are strong they can improve their game.
Summary: Hogan's treasure
This is the most concise and precise description of the golf swing written. Hogan discovered the mechanics after many years of trial by fire, and Sports Illustrated matched him with the best sports writer and illustrator of his day to put it to paper. I, and many of my friends, read this book from cover to cover every March in preparation for the new golf season. It is also a terrific gift to anyone who is just starting to learn how to swing properly, or to someone who wants to improve their game after many years of effort.

Summary: Concise little must-have book
If you are lucky enough to have a copy of "How to Perfect Your Golf Swing" by Jimmy Ballard and this wonderful little Effortless Golf Swing book by Michael McTeigue, just combine the instruction of both books to have a golf swing that gets results on the course. Do yourself and your golf game a favor and buy this book.
Summary: A Great Golf Instruction Book
This book is beautifully constructed, concise, gracefully written, and should be of immense help to most golfers. If you've read Ernest Jones, Percy Boomer, or Jimmy Ballard (for example) and enjoyed the insights but found it difficult to transfer the written word to your swing, try "The Keys ...": You will read a book that may finally lead you to improve your game. My swing improved markedly after I came to understand author McTeigue's "lighthouse turn" (Lesson Two: Momentum).
Summary: Gem in The Rough
I became a golf nut four years ago and I have bought every golf "training aid" and how-to book I have come across. I have closets filled with training vests, videos, and swing trainers. Then I found this book, it shaved ten points off my score, and has been my only coach for six months now. It has given me a frame-work to let me know what I am doing wrong and how to fix it. Until I "go pro" this is all I'll need. It is really a remarkable book.

.....ENHANCED OUR MENTAL OUTLOOK AND ATTITUDE

THE LOVE WE HAVE FOR PLAYING GOLF.
Summary: Excellent, Highly recommended!!!!
This book taught me how to score better.
I really liked the golf routine for the short game
that is explained. The techniques in this book are definitely
helpful. I'm now a much better golfer. I now can hit the ball
much further. The author really taps into the limitations that were holding me back to becoming a great golfer. There are water
hazards on the two par 3s of my home course. I'm no longer
afraid of hitting it in the water.
I have much more confidence before I hit a golf shot because
of what I learned from The Ultimate Golf Instruction Guide.
Summary: FABULOUS BOOK, my dream has come true!
The reasons why this book has awesome golf instruction:

The short game explained in the book makes so much sense. It is a very simple, yet highly and I mean highly effective. I get up and down more often now then ever. I even hole a few chips every now and then. [...] this book has unconventional golf techniques that are highly useful.
My greens in regulation percentage has improved from average of 27% per round to an average of 55% per round. This took me a period of about six months. This book is not another quick tip book. However, as soon as I started using these techniques, I hit the ball a lot more at my intended targets. It has golf techniques that actually give positive lasting effects. I been through a lot of golf books. Golf books usually don't give me lasting results. However, this one does. The best of what I learned from other golf instruction books is proper etiquette and why people slice or hook the ball.
My driving ability has only gotten better. Before reading this book, my fairways hit was 35%. Now after following his essentials of the zero handicap golfer, I now hit approximately 60% of the fairways. Leonardi's technique makes a lot of sense because he showed me how to get more power.
My driving distance has gone up. Before applying the techniques in this book, I had an average driving distance of around 225 yards. After applying the author's techniques, my drives now average in the 265 yard range. I'm amazed at how much power I was losing because I used to be using poor techniques before applying Leonardi's techniques. Now I don't get those up and down practice sessions at the range as I used to get. My practice sessions at the range are much more consistent. In fact, I continue to get better. For example, in the book, it says "slumps don't have to be a part of golf." I can say that the author knows what he is talking about. I don't shoot bad scores anymore.

The author's unique golf instruction is easy to follow. Yes, the book is unconventional. But it's unconventional in an exceptional way. This book is worth much more then $50 because now golf is a lot more satisfying. I used to only dream of what it would be like to score below 80. My dream is now a reality.

[...]the book looks different and to have an open mind. The different look of the book fits perfectly with the unique and exceptional technique given. Ten Stars. Enough said.

Summary: This book cut 13 strokes off my first round. Really.
I know that sounds like ridiculous hype, but it's true.

I swear I'm not the author's brother, cousin, agent or employee. I am a weekend golfer - not even every weekend. I live up north so only play 4 or 5 months out of the year. I've consistently scored 103 to 107 per round over the past 4-5 years.

At the driving range, I hit the vast majority of my shots right down the middle, or at least well enough so that they'd be in play 90% of the time. It's when I get out on the course that it all falls apart. So I knew my technique was okay... it had to be a mental problem. I was thinking of seeing a sports hypnotist but couldn't find one and besides, I just don't play that much golf - maybe about 9 holes a week - and didn't want to invest the time or money.

So I went online to see if I could find a book that would address my problem and found Fearless Golf. There is no technique in book, so if your swing or putting stinks, look elsewhere. This book is all about what's going on inside your head. For me it was a bullseye.

When I first started reading it, I was a little defensive; I'M not fearful... I'M not afraid. But as I went though the book, I realized that I was and just didn't realize it. I was afraid of going with what works... I was holding back and sabotaging myself. I was "afraid" of posting yet another lousy score, "afraid" of losing another $10 bet, "afraid" of wasting my valuable time on another awful round. , etc., etc. This book helped me figure that out and get things straight. Why do I golf? Why don't I trust my swing like I do at the range? Why do my bad shots turn in to more bad shots? I got answers to these questions and more importantly, a few solid, concrete things to do mentally before each shot that have made a huge difference.

The results: on my first 9 holes after finishing the book I went birdie-par-bogey-par and ended up with a 45 (there was a 9 in there). My next 9-hole round was another 45 including another birdie and a few pars. That may not sound so great to you, but in my world pars are rare and birdies were extinct! Those two rounds added up to a 90 - or 13 strokes less than my low-end typical 103!! And 17 less than my typical high-end 107! I've seen all the infomercials on TV and in the magazines of products "guaranteeing to shave 5, 10 or 15 stokes off your score", but this one really worked, not that there's any such promise in his book.

Yesterday I played in a company tournament of which I play 2 or 3 a year. In this pressure situation, on a totally unfamiliar course (in 95 degree heat), I scored a 96, still 7-10 strokes lower than my usual. Several times during play, I realized that I was forgetting to do the mental "warm-up" before each shot and as soon as I went back to it, my shots instantly got better.

Not only are my scores much better, but 80% of the frustration is gone. Whereas last year I was thinking about quitting the sport, I now am thinking that consistent play in the high 80's is realistic. (Hey - I only missed by one stroke on those two 9-hole rounds!)

If my story sounds like you - good at the driving range but much worse on the course, then buy this book. It costs less than a dozen decent golf balls and was EASILY the best $15 investment I've made in years.

Summary: MInd altering
Excellent points on how to adapt your thinking to play the most chlllenging game.
Summary: Finally a mental game book for low handicappers!
I play golf 4 times a week and am a scratch golfer, and was struggling with my game for about 6 months. I am telling you this book turned things around for me immediately! I like Rotella's stuff, but Dr. Valiante really gets it! While there are many golf psychology books out there - and I've read them all - none of them address issues for the advanced golfer with a low handicap. You can tell Dr. Valiante works with Tour Pros because he talks about things that are unique to the advanced player and low handicapper. The other books talk in general about the mind, but miss the unique things low handicappers deal with. For example, Dr. Valiante's description of Mastery/Ego golfers fit me to a tee, and since I've switched mindsets to mastery golf I am much, much more comfortable. If you are an advanced player, and struggling, I (like Justin Leonard and David Toms - both who endorse this book) strongly recommend you buy this book!

Summary: Good premise but doesn't meet expectations
I was caught up by the title of this book and after skimming a few pages decided to buy it. After getting more deeply into it, however, I realize that it doesn't live up to its hype, in my opinion.

If you're not familiar with this teaching method, similar to "Extraordinary Golf" which I happen to prefer, then this book is probably a breath of fresh air to you. Most golf books focus on very specific physical aspects of the swing, which to the beginning golfer is pretty much a waste of time. If you're just getting started, you need to find someone you can trust to help you understand the basics of the game on a driving range and a low-key 9 hole course. DON'T DO ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:
1. Sign up for an expensive set of lessons with an "expert" instructor. S/he will convince you how klutzy you are unless you spend $1,000+ to get the latest equipment and another grand for more lessons.
2. Try to play a standard 18-hole par 72 course right off the bat (especially on a weekend). You can't maintain the required pace of play, will get extremely frustrated, and will probably piss off your playing partners and the groups behind you.
3. Go spend a lot of money on gadgets like swing correction devices, or instructional videos/DVD's. These might increase your initial enthusiasm, but eventually they'll collect dust in your garage.

This book is probably not for beginners, either, as it assumes you've had some of the above experiences, and need a kinder, gentler approach to the game. It especially downplays the importance of swing instruction, and says to learn how to understand your own natural swing rhythm. It says the best way to become the best golfer you can be is to focus on all parts of the game, including mental and social aspects. I pretty much agree with this philosophy. The most important part of playing golf is to enjoy yourself. If you hit one good shot during a round or practice session, you'll probably come back to try to do it again. But hitting more good shots than bad ones takes lots of time and patience, so you might as well relax and enjoy your surroundings while waiting for that next great (or even acceptable) shot to come.

Ok, now for my complaints. I think every golfer needs to figure out his/her setup routine, and I happen to prefer mine over the one recommended by this book. I understand what the book's approach is, but I like to take a practice swing or two right next to my ball, not behind it as the book tells you to do.

Also, the book tells you to practice on the driving range like you're playing a round, and switch clubs after every shot. I believe if you're a beginner this is not necessary, and usually you want to try to stay with the same club until you've hit at least a couple of good shots in a row. To follow this book's logic to its correct conclusion, you should hit a drive, then an iron, then a 20-yard chip, then go over to the putting green and hit a couple putts. Not practical. I've tried simulating playing conditions on the driving range, and the fact is that while you can and should work on specific kinds of shots, you can't really simulate what it feels like to actually hit off the first tee with three other players watching you. Again, I agree with the book that you should do everything you can to make yourself a better golfer on the course, but I don't think simulating a round on the driving range is particularly helpful or necessary for most people.

My last complaint is that the book seems to place too much emphasis on the usage of this technique by Annika Sorenstam and the Swedish women's golf team. Yes, Annika is potentially the best woman golfer ever, and I admire her mental approach to the game. But there are lots of great golfers with lots of different ideas about how to enjoy golf, and perhaps more importantly there are lots of average golfers who also have a positive approach to the game. The book seems to be saying that you have to "Be Like Annika", instead of saying "Be Yourself" and find your own methods of making golf worthwhile.

Try "Extraordinary Golf" or even "Golf in the Kingdom" if you want to read better books on the total experience of the game.
Summary: Excellent Explanation of What It takes to Succeed at Golf and Life
Learn what you can control and what you cannot. Spend time working on what you can control, enjoy yourself the rest of the time. As a counselor, this book is profound and everything in it is transferable to life off the course as well. Highly recommended.
Summary: Common sence
An interesting book which made sence.

I had very high expectations when buying the book and it didn't quite measure up to them.

Summary: You don't even have to enjoy golf to enjoy this book
Oh-oh.

I see a potential movie here.

Somewhere between Caddyshack and Happy Gilmore would be... Shanks for Nothing. Rick Reilly writes like Dave Barry thinks, knows golf, and has an upbeat style that keeps the story going at a good pace... sort of a Dick Francis with a 6 iron instead of a saddle. These characters are memorable and unique.

Remember... I told you about the movie idea here first.
Summary: Shanks For Nothing
Highly recomended. Must read Missing Links prior to get the history. I liked it a lot. ( 3 handicap )

Fiction YES. But, these situations could very much be daily happenings.
Summary: Awesome
I couldn't put this book down,I was laughing out loud. I bought Missing Links and read it and loved that also. But read missing links first, its the prequel.
