Summary: Includes a Useful Dictionary of Catholic Terms.
The Fireside Bible (ISBN:1556654901) is a nice copy of the
New American Bible (NAB) for Catholics, and it includes some very
useful supplimental appendicies. Because of its thick cover, the
bible itself is quite durable by bible paper standards. There is
no red-lettering, but each book within the bible is marked on the
side by black tabs. At the begining, the book has a short
summary of the origin of the bible and a history of its
translation into English. And at the back, the book has a
156 page dictionary of Catholic terms. This dictionary includes
entries for theological terms, apostles, gospel writers, and
other important religious figures, with references to scripture
readings.
Summary: Good Translation, Great Notes
This modern American Catholic translation is very readable and somewhat literal, which is admittedly to my preference. (Even as a Roman Catholic, one of my favorite translations in English is the NASB.) At times, however, the translators in order to keep this from the stiffness found in academic study translations seemed to slip into near colloquialisms. Somewhere in this translation I read "ignoramus." It was a little distracting. And in I Cor. 9:26 just the other day I was similarly distracted by Paul's "I do not fight as if I were shadowboxing" where a less comical image in the RSV is of Paul futilely "beating the air." I would personally prefer a retention of some of the archaic speech where the modern speech upsets the cadence of the Scripture. But the purpose of this translation seems to have been an attempt to strike a balance between accessibility and literalness. Generally, I believe the translators met that goal.

The notes. Ahhhhh. The notes. Of interest especially for the Roman Catholic, and also for the general Catholic and high Protestant are the wonderful notes. Many fundamentalists who don't accept the Elohist/Yahwist schools of Old Testament study, and the "Q" Gospel source theory will be upset by the copious, legible notations, text breaks and subject headings, and expository book introductions. For me, they make the Sacred Scripture come to life by breathing context into the writings.

It is this particular translation of the Sacred Scripture with its notes and study aids that finally allowed me to make my first productive reading of Leviticus and Numbers. Where before I had dutifully plowed just to plow, this time I came away learning and cross-referencing and stopping to ponder the mercies of a God who gave us a fantastic type of His Son in Moses, the great "Legislator" (as Josephus would title him).

Summary: A wonderful Bible!!!
This Bible has been great! It has taken a lot of use for the last few years and held up nicely. Dictionary in the back is very helpful as well as the three year cycle of readings. You'll be happy with this Bible.

Summary: Not a Suspenseful Pageturner, but Fascinating Investigation
I was intrigued enough by watching the recent PBS interview with the authors to read their book. Anyone who challenges accepted dogma/teaching is frequently villified, so it's no surprise these guys got the shaft, too. Galileo, Copernicus, ...at least they didn't get the stake. Reading all this research was a little dry at times, but easy enough to follow. It's always amazing to me how ready people are to believe what the men in robes tell you from the pulpit, which is no more than what they are taught to believe in seminary, (theology is not the same as scientifically studying the context in which the Bible was written) vs. questioning why there are so many blatant inconsistencies, not to mention heinous "head-scratchers" within the "Word of God". Often these ministers have no real knowledge of all the political intrigue, maneuvering, rewriting, editing, social control, suppression of truth that became what is considered "holy". Yes, what these authors lay on the table at the end is a hypothesis, but given the undeniable amount of historical facts unearthed & organized, this is far more reasonable than anything else out there in my view. If this topic at all interests you, I highly recommend reading "Sins of the Scripture" by John Shelby Spong, too. I mean, really, voting on the divinity of Jesus? That's how he became the "Son of God". (That is a historical fact!) "Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely" - the church has been & will be exercising this whenever people follow like sheep, without asking necessary questions. Church leaders are great salesmen. Always have been, always will be. Ask questions, read, get educated, believe in God, but not as they tell you to.
Summary: What is real, what is not?
At first, I liked the way the authors used (or tried to use) a scientific and skeptical approach to the infortamtion they gathered. But when you know that the Prieure de Sion was a modern hoax, and the authors had used it as the "glue that holds everything together", then can't feel but sorry about the authors and their conclusions.

However, many of the facts and documents that the found are not subject to be disqualified; the problem is that the information can't be linked together as the authors tried to do. The book is a good read, but you have to go trying to separate the fact from the fiction, which is not what you expect from a nonfiction book.
Summary: It could be conspiracy theory but it could have also been covered up.
http://www.paranoiamagazine.com/georevelations.html
The above link is an interview with the author (Lincoln). In the interview he tells where Plantard tells him the parchment is faked but he refutes it because he found code in the actual parchment.

(TT: Well, didn't they give you some information about pentagonal geometry?

HL: No, I found the geometry! It was when M. Plantard, at my very first meeting with him, said to me, "The parchments were fakes, and they were faked by Cherisey", who was seated right next to me. My response was to say, "No, M. Plantard", which was not the response he expected. Because I had already found the pentagon in the parchment, and therefore I knew that there was a lot more to that document then had so far been talked about. )

So could the Priory be trying to cover itself up again and deflect attention from it?

It is an interesting read and there is more to research on the net but be careful when you get to the Christian sites on this because Christian science is based on faith and feeling not any sort of fact. If it was then you would not need faith.
The whole point of faith is believing something that can not be logically proven.

Maybe there has been a cover up and that is the way the Priory wants it.

Summary: Holy Bible: From the Ancient Eastern Text
Next to the King James' Version of the Bible, Lamasa's translation is the BEST. He even clarifies some passages where there is confusion when translated to English. Thanks, George.
Summary: Good King James companion
The beauty of Lamsa's translation is that it does NOT supersede the KJV---it illuminates it. Lamsa chose to retain the form of the KJV and probably the majority of the text is identical with the KJV. Some printings of the KJV evan have italicized words which indicate that the original translators were unable to determine or translate these words. This is where the Aramaic--which was unknown to the KJV translators--answers the questions.

I grew up with the KJV and it is so imprinted in thought that the changes Lamsa has made are strikingly evident--and welcome. I have read both books straight through and find myself feeling closer to the material than with the KJV. I also study a weekly Bible lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly. This uses the KJV, and I put it on my computer in a Word document and bracket in the Lamsa changes. It's a real eye opener. I haven't found a single Lamsa variation that isn't illuminating both historically and in the practical application of the Bible. Things that never before made sense now do.

One recent example is the I Kings 3 story of the two harlots, each of whom claims a surviving newborn child as her own. The KJV has Solomon apparently awarding the child to "this woman"---the second to plead and not the true mother. Lamsa, however, says: "Give the [child alive] [to the first woman], and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof."

There is a lot of debate on-line and among scholars as to whether Aramaic or Greek was the original NT language, which could be off-putting. But the Lamsa Bible translation speaks for itself.

Summary: ARAMAIC HOLY BIBLE TRANSLATION BY DR. LAMSA THE BEST IN 1900 Years!!!
Dear Readers:
After researching the Aramaic Holy Bible translated by Prof Dr. George M. Lamsa, and reading most of his (and Prof. Dr. Rocco Errico's) specialized commentaries, I was (and still am) VERY IMPRESSED as to its CLARITY and SKILL. I submit here, that I have NOT seen any Bible translated with such mastery and skill as the Aramaic Bible by Prof. Dr. George Lamsa! This is my ONLY Bible that I can rely for text accuracy (The Greek New Test.

Summary: Three veils
This is a photocopy of the Bible as issued in 1611, somewhat reduced. There are three veils between the reader and the text. Only buy this if you are willing and able to tackle a 17th Century document.

First, the language and scholarship of the translation reflect the situation in 1611. The first edition of the Bible in English without the apocrypha was printed in 1640. 1826 is the date of the present practice of leaving it out most of the time. So this Bible contains the apocrypha.

The study of Hebrew has advanced since 1611. For instance, someone says "Am I a dog-face?" (1611). I had to go to a modern translation to find "Am I a baboon?"

Similarly, words are used in strange ways. Accept, Poll, Hough are words I had to search for. I had to go to the Oxford English Dictionary to find some meanings. You definitely need a good unabridged dictionary to tackle the King James Translation.

Second, this is a real 17th century printing. That is, spelling was not yet standardized. Mee (for me), Bee (for be), Foorth (for forth) are common. A small y with an "e" supercript it used for "the" (as in Ye Olde Shoppe). A final vowel with a horizontal line above it is used to indicate that you need to add an "m". Sometimes the printer runs words together to save space.

Third, there are misprints or typographical errors.

If you are willing to use a dictionary you will be able to get the sense of the text most of the time. Sometimes you will need to consult a modern translation because the meaning does not come across very well. If you are not willing to make these adjustments and read slowly over and over, then this is not a good edition to select. I enjoy it. But it is work.
Summary: Not really all it is cracked up to be
God is not limited to a translation. God is not limited to the KJV. The KJV 1611 was published AFTER the Catholic Douay-Rheims Bible that is in English. The Vulgate was around since the 4th Century. In the middle ages if you couldn't read Latin you couldn't read English either. The net result of this book is 30000 protestant denominations growing steadily. Each have a different Christ to teach and different Christianity to teach. It is all NEW AGE because of this book. Christ selects Apostles who appoint Bishops to lead the Church Jesus started. Early Christians taught Christianity via the Catechism, not the Bible. The Bible was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church by authorization of the Pope at the 3rd Council of Carthage in 397 AD. The KJV is not authorized by them and never was. The Bible was never the deposit of faith. The truth was given to the Apostles on the day of Pentacaust. The WORD OF GOD is mentioned 47 times in this version. It means Jesus in the flesh or an oral transmission (like Catechism). Never once is the phrase WORD OF GOD used in reference to the Bible.
Summary: A Great Addition to Your Bible Library
I think the 1611 Holy Bible King James Version is a must to complete your Bible collection. Complete with the Apocrypha, the 1611 edition will give you in your hands an exquisite replica of the original KJV. One thing about the KJV, it really, along with the writings of Shakesphear, solidified the English language.

In Olde English, you will notice some differences from the KJV you have in your library today. You will note also, that this bible carries with it a sense of excellence, the excellence that only the scriptures can carry.

Summary: Whole lot of CD's!
Wow, 60 CD's. Great quality though, decent packaging, and the added case to carry 64 CD's certainly adds to the quality of this product. The packaging on a data DVD in MP3 format would have been MUCH smaller though.
The CD's are labelled well, although somewhat confusing. For example, when it says on disc 7, "Leviticus 13:53-26:36", you can tell that it's starting part way through chapter 13 and ending part way through chapter 26, but it doesn't show you, visually at least, how many verses there are remaining in chapter 13 beyond verse 53.
Each track is one chapter, or portion of a chapter when it's been split across volumes.

Summary: something old, something new
Picture a handsome leather-bound volume with a column of attractively-set Hebrew text on the right side of each page and a superb English translation in very readable typeset on the left side. This is what you get in the two leather-bound versions of the 1999 Hebrew-English Bible published by the Jewish Publication Society. I own the large version for reading at home and a handly but vision-challenging small version for the road. I travel a lot and it goes with me on many of those trips.

If you want a less elegantly bound paperback version, you can have that too. In terms of its size, it's midway between the two leather-bound Bibles I've mentioned. Size does matter, as it is eminently more readable for most eyes than the small handbook version.

When the JPS set out to prepare this edition of the Tanakh, it assembled a cast of Jewish luminaries in biblical studies. They chose to go for pretty full disclosure with regards to the many translation difficulties that the Hebrew Bible throws at its readers. Ample footnotes draw the readers attention to these.

A well-written preface tells the story of the traditional text ('Massoretic' or 'Masoretic Text').

This reviewer is a biblical scholar, though not a Jewish one. As such, I'm well aware of the problems created by traditional and biblical literary in the Jewish community today. This version of the Tanakh should make a welcome contribution to resolution of that ailment. Meanwhile, non-Jewish readers like me will read gratefully over the shoulders of the Jewish Publication Society's intended readership.
Summary: The Tanakh as a textbook...
The JPS version of the Tanakh is one of my favorites. The style and translation make it easy to relate to and read without simplification or misinterpretation. I purchased this one due to the size of it and that the pages would lie flat when placed on a table. The paper is the fine tissue-like you would expect and the font is easy to read without being that huge large-print which makes it good for studying. That is why I would call this edition more of a textbook. I have a smaller version that I use outside the home also by JPS in a leather cover with tabs.
Summary: First Jewish Translation in a long time.
This is one of the only translations of the Old Testament that gets the '70 weeks' spoken about in the Book of Daniel correctly translated. There are also many parts of this Old Testament Bible that clarifies things.

However, this version of the Old Testament has no sub-headings, no detailed explanatory notes, and no punctuation where the text is incomplete. This is not a Bible to replace a version of the Old Testament that you already have, but it should be looked at as a compliment to the Bible's you do have.

However, I did give it 5 stars because it's such a good and lovely translation and it does give a lot of clarifications to the sacred texts. Jewish or Christian or of other faiths, I think everyone should own a copy.

Summary: This is razor sharp sword
If you are looking for a first rate bible, or are looking to get understanding when you read the bible this is the one to get. I teach bible study and recently became aware of this bible from a member of the group and found that this is the best study bible I have ever found. And that is saying a lot.
Summary: AWESOME Bible
I cannot put the Bible down. I owned the first version and, yes the print was larger in the old version, which I can use as I get older. This Bible has practically everything you need in it from maps, Strong's Concordance, Greek/Hebrew translation of words, and word study. The awesome part is in the article series in the back of the Bible which talks about the problems w/in today's church, Healing of Our Nations (called to a reconciliation ministry to all nations), restoration, Messianic Believers, spiritual gifts, and how to bring another to Christ. As a Jewish believer, the relevancy in today's world with the Middle East, Judiasm, Israel, and the prophetic word from the O.T. is right on target. It is an awesome Bible!
Summary: Review of New Spirit Filled Life Bible:
I think this Bible is wonderful. I love how it has the Strong's in it also. Great Bible probably the best I have ever had!
