Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Study Power? Sudy Skills to Improve Your Learning and Your Grades The content and writing style of this book are more appropriate to the high school or college student. The book probably would not motivate a younger reader...too serious and too general. Summary: Not worth the time! This book is rather brief. This book is like a brief assortment of topics. It didn't help me much. For time management (which possibly is the greatest skill that any student must master), the authors just mention very briefly. Summary: Similar to the book, SURVEY OF 300 A+ STUDENTS This book is similar to the book, SURVEY OF 300 A+ STUDENTS: A+ STUDENTS DESCRIBE THEIR ACADEMIC STRATEGIES, by Kenneth Green (from Harvard). However, I think that Kenneth Green's book is more comprehensive and gives the information in a chronological order, which makes it a smoother read. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Just what I ordered! The book was exactly what I ordered and it was sent promptly! Great Price! Thanks! Summary: Got a visual learner with special needs? This is for you! My autistic son is a visual learner. He watches TV, computer and other children and will learn from them. In addition - abstract concepts and teaching basic academics can be done with a lot of visual support vs. auditory presentations alone. This is a strong book to identify the issues for special needs kids and using visual strategies to solving them. I highly recommend this book. Summary: Overflowing with useful and practical ideas! I have read a lot of books on autism and I would highly recommend this one! The author details, in a very clear way, why "visual supports" work well for everyone, but especially for those who have communication related disorders. Then she goes beyond the explanations to give you real examples you can use and directions on how to implement them. She has a very practical approach and acknowledges the differences and similarites needed between school and home programs. I think this book would be invaluable to a teacher of special needs children and also the "regular ed" teacher who has a wide range of children and their individual needs to consider. Parents and caregivers will also benefit greatly from this book as it has many examples that go beyond the school experience. One of my favorite quotes from the book is "Imagine being on one of those whirlwind package tours of Europe; sixteen cities in 7 days. You discover the tour agent forgot to give you an itinerary. Every day you don't know where you are goin, what you are going to see or when you are going to eat. Frustrating? That is how many of our students feel about life on a daily basis. It is one of the reasons we see students cling to ritual and routine." This book is literally packed with ideas and is well worth the cover price. .... Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A great help for a low price! A great help for a low price! Two of my family members used this book (don't worry, each got their own copy - they're starting college this fall!) to brush up before taking and PASSING their GED tests. Mission accomplished! The format is easy to follow and the information is just what you need. It emphasizes finding your weaknesses so you can strengthen them. I recommend it for homeschoolers needing a great way to prove they have a high school education and anyone needing to finish their high school education. Summary: Get this book!! I bought this book after being out of school for 16 years and finally taking my GED. I passed with a score well over 500 and even got a scholarship to go to college from my high score. If you want to pass the GED, I say get this book. Summary: Great Book! This book was very helpful to me. I had been out of school for 12 years before I took the GED exams. I studied on my own, and passed with flying colors. My score is 3080, I've heard that some institutions consider that passing with honors. Anyway, what I loved about this book is the pre-tests.... You take the pre-test for each subject, and depending on the questions you got wrong the book tells you what pages to study. This was a great idea from the makers of this book. At the end of the book are all the post-tests, after you've studied what you got wrong on the pre-test (it goes through step by step to teach you the things you don't know), you proceed to the post tests. This is a GREAT book!!!! I would recommend it for anyone taking the GED exams. Summary: |

I couldn't believe the amount of information the books hold. This book is definately a safe bet. Summary: Dripping with irony I don't know, how can you publish a book with this title? Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: About the best book you'll find on the subject First off, I should say that I believe it is a shame that there even has to be a home schooling movement. It takes the student away from a potentially excellent socializing institution and one that theoretically at least is at the foundations of the ideas behind a democratic country where education is open to all. Nowadays, People live in barricaded, guarded communities so as to avoid crime. This might achieve its purpose, but some how one's humanity may be lost in the process. Home schooling can be a reasonalbe response to an even worse situation--the deterioration of public school education, so I can't fault the movement. But how about improving the schools. Are homeschoolers top afraid of venture out of doors? That to me is the hidden message and children pick up on such things quickly. That said, if you are going to homeschool your children, this book offers a good blueprint on planning and organizing your own curriculum. It is neither reductionist or too technical. It can serve as a teaching aide, but in the end, the individual parent must be savvy and sophisticated enough to take the responsibility and develop the expertise to know a good education from a bad one. I would have liked to see some information on the transition from home schooling to college. Perhaps there are other books that address this important issue. As a former college professor, I became so outraged by college practices, particularly the way they rip off parents and students, that I started a website about it: www.inthetext.com. It offers hints on what goes on behind the scenes of academe and what you can do about it. Good luck. Summary: Great Resource!!! THis book has been a life saver in the very tedious job of designing a curriculum for home schooling. It is very well organized and provides wonderful references. Bravo! Summary: I wish I had it sooner..... I just recieved this book from my father-in-law for Christmas along with two other homeschooling books. This is our first year unschooling/homeschooling and I often wonder if my children are learning all they should. They are!!!!! I just wish I had this book at the beginning of the year. Atleast I WILL have it at the beginning of NEXT year. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The most reassuring, inspiring and LIBERATING book for teens I homeschooled for two years, and after trying a "regular" school for 9th grade, I felt like every bit of my love of learning was drained out of me. My family and I had always had one foot in one foot out with home schooling, but after reading Grace Llewellyn's book, I have decided to homeschool for the rest of high school. It has reminded me that there is so much in the world to discover and be excited about. So much more to learn without someone force feeding information to you. It has reassured and inspired me to continue with self educating myself, and regain my love of learning. Summary: Solid Clear Through Given the already excellent reviews, I only feel the need to give this book 5 stars and to add that the Table of Contents can give you an idea of what's in this book. This is a book that explain why schools often do more harm than good, why unschooling works so well, and how to do it legally and effectively. If you don't have any idea how to unschool in math, science, or any other subject, this book will help. It advises on how to get involved in social activities and team sports, too. It even shows how to make unschooling financially rewarding. Finally, this book is a rich resource on how to gain higher education if that is your wish, or to explore other avenues of continued learning. All in all, whatever problem you can think of with unschooling, Miss Llewellyn has already thought of it and explained it in this book. Summary: Everything else is great! My only concern: Skip the rant on bureaucratic problems (& story) if you want and go straight to Chapter 3 to start reading. I wish it would talk more about people's experiences and ideas for learning to replace the venting chapters. After reading it in 2003, I was inspired to take my frustration with the lack of motivation for learning I saw with my classes and made a website for resources on autodidacticism. So If you're not confident enough to totally overhaul the system, you can at least do something about it. Making this site led me to talk with actual lifelong learners and advocates about their thoughts on knowledge and education, the process they underwent and so forth. Regardless of how you are conditioned to think what education, learning, school, is - the book does open up a new way to look at things, even if you disagree (provided you're open to it). Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Just For Parents? I have never read this book, but I had to rate it so that I could post this question. I was wondering if anyone could please tell me if this book is just for parents. Could a kid or teen read it and understand it also, or is it mostly for the adult audience? Thanks in advance! Summary: A ray of sunshine in a world of disorganization The book is a road map in the world of disorganziation. My son and I both have ADD/ADHD and I really lacked the necessary organization skills to help my child succeed at school. I also apply the same principles to help me at work. This is not just for kids. It's also great for adults. We finally have a tool that can help us be succesful. The examples are easy to follow. The example photos were great. This is an extremely valuable resource for any struggling parent who has children who are struggling academically. The book is empowering and so easy to read and understand. This is definitely a resource you can't afford to be without. Summary: Wish I'd had this when I was a teenager! This is a wonderful book! I heard about it on the radio and thought I'd check it out. My oldest son is only 7, but I was hoping I could get some good organizational tips to get him started. I think a good place to start is with time management. Donna talks about how the kids are taught how to organize and time management in school, but are not taught why they need these skills. My son is very imaginative, but very disorganized and has a great tendency to lose things. I hope we can implement things from this book little by little and by the time he enters middle school he will have all the tools available in this book. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Manuel of School Health Dear Publisher, I am writing in support of the book "Manuel of School Health by Keeta Lewis and Bonnie Bear. I am a School Nurse in Washington Unified School and I use the book frequently in my practice of School Nursing. I cover 4 schools including 3 elementaries and a middle school where I have approximately 2300 students. I often look up medical information in this book as well as make copies of the different pages for pages for parents and guardians. It is really the only book I have ever found that specifically covers our field of practice and the kind of illnesses we deal with on a daily basis. When I can copy a page and go over it with a family member, it very concisely outlines the treatment and care of the condition. Also, I especially appreciate the exclusion information the book details so that I know best practice guidelines and when to allow the student to return to achool. When it is in a book, in writing, it has validity and credibility and stips any arguement or debate about the guidelines. This book also helps me with information for teachers. They often ask me medical questions and I pull out my handy School Nurse manuel and can give them the answers they want in timely manner. Thank-you fo publishing this very handy guide that I can use on a daily basis as a School Nurse in Northern California. Lanette Reeves, R.N. Summary: Excellent resource for school nurses This book is an excellent reference book for school nurses. It is user friendly and has basic information for nurses working in schools. The only comment is that was last revised in 1986. The information presented is basic information which one needs to know if working in schools. I do feel it is time for an update to include current topics that we see in schools--increased use of medications for behavior modification, eating disorder issues, etc. I am purchasing this book for my office.
