Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: natural secrets I glanced at book and wife bought bug spray.I can't say if advise works or not. I like ideas if they work and will try next time. Summary: Disappointing TV hype is misleading-its not worth the money for following reasons: 1. If you have to go to multiple stores to buy a half dozen ingredients for 1 spray, it will occur to you to just buy 1 spray. Isn't it like buying 5 batteries to recharge one? 2 He spends a lot of pages telling you why he loves various pests rather than how you rid yourself of them. I got it for frogs. Nothing on that but a lot about why toads are good. 3.Rid yourself of ants by leaving tainted cat food in the bushes. Hmm. Isn't the reason you would have cat food that you have a cat? 4. Some suggestions were downright hilarious- I live in Hawaii and have bamboo around every side of the premises. I guarantee that it does nothing to discourage mosquitoes howevermany dragonflies may like the bamboo. And the notion crows may be deterred by socks that look like humans? In fairness, I did not climb trees to hang them because I would hear crows laughing. Summary: Poor I bought this book hoping to find some cures to insect and disease problems on my plants. What I found instead was poor editing, information that seems to come from the top of the authors head, and drawings that are amaturish at best. Information in this book usually comes in poorly organized one sentence long blurbs that don't supply data on where the information originally came from or how likely the cure is to work, which is important since there seem to be about thirty "cures" for each problem. I guess the author just expects us to keep trying the wacky cures (some of which do include poisons)until one works - if any of them really do. I did try a few of the cures including a wierd baking soda mixture, and a citrus spray. Neither of them worked. If the author had actually tried these cures I would think that he would have provided more information on them - In other words I doubt that the author tried these cures himself. As a doctor I like the idea of safer cures. This book misidentifies certain practices as cures, misspells simple words, and gets the facts wrong about the safety of many cures and chemicals (what he thinks is in Sevin would be particularly amusing - if it weren't so potentially dangerous). I strongly recommend avoiding this book. Dr. R Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Enjoyable Read I read this book over a weekend, and found it thoroughly enjoyable. The author does have a distinctive style, chatty with a tendency to go off on tangents. Not to everyones taste but I liked it. Some reviewers have noted that the science could be more rigorous. That is what pubmed is for, this is pop-science, written by a journalist, and one is of the better offerings within the genre. Summary: Undesirable It's the polar opposite of good writing. It's so familiar, so conversational, so unturgid, and so padded with fluffy stuff it's unreadable. Even worse than I figured it would be. Oh, well, now i know after wondering all these years. Summary: Pollan Stands Us On Our Heads... ...and points out that a lot in life is a matter of perspective. Immediately the reader can identify with the author, whose somewhat flowery prose stills sounds a lot like how we would write about something that we knew a LOT about. Obviously this is a man who enjoys his chosen careers of botanist and writer. Above all Pollan brings the reader into his atmosphere, and is able to educate without any of the normal side-effects of education--boredom, effort, no beer money. His descriptions of plant and bee sex are entertaining, to put it mildly. I enjoyed it so much a was a hair's width from stealing it from my friend Alex in Boulder. But then I came here and ordered a copy along with "The Omnivore's Dilemma". Yes, it's that good. - Ivar Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Many ideas for designing small areas near small houses (4.5 Stars) I can see from the other reviews that there exist a wide range of opinions about this book. I fall of the high side, I suppose. I enjoyed the large number of photos and ideas for landscaping small areas - spots even - in the yard around a smaller home. One, rather unreal aspect was that, most of the homes pictured are modern homes with interesting custom architecture. Some of us live in simple ranch-styles (boxes). Julie's training and interest in architecture does come through, but I did not find it distracting. In fact, I found the emphasis on the relationship between the interior design of the home and landscape as seen from inside very useful. Most landscaping books present only the view TOWARD the house, not FROM it. I got several good ideas from this book and learned a bit about design. Summary: Milking the Not So Big House Subtitled: "Milking the Not So Big House for Everything It Is Worth." Summary: Too much "designspeak" Having stumbled upon this book at the library and being familiar with the "Not So Big" approach I thought this book would be interesting. Not so. Lots of beautiful images at extraordinary locations but a surprising lack of concrete principles which one could apply to their own landscape. OK, I get "places and paths" and a few other concepts sprinkled throughout the book ("frames"comes to mind). But "defusing the energy of the corner" and many other abstract explanations for design decisions leaves the reader to guess as to what the designer was thinking. And the self-congratulatory remarks between authors are over the top... Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Gardening info by Committee Gardening info by Committee: "Contributions from 100 distinguished horticulturists", yet in many ways this reference amplification fits the classic definition of a horse show. Sometimes books spin their wheels attempting to be all things to all people and accomplish nothing within that venture. For a perspective on the true relevance of their boast; "15,000 entries" - consider this, - Reviews of Modern Roses XI : The World Encyclopedia of Roses- has more than 25,000 listings of roses alone. Plant science researchers; those involved with academic and industrial settings, horticultural nurseries, botanical gardens, and informed amateur enthusiasts may not enthusiastically embrace this book's lack of information. A multiplication of 15,000 incomplete entries does not a good reference make. Summary: ...worth the trouble I had A BEAUTIFUL and comprehensive book. Yes, difficult to identify unknowns using this reference but if you can at least get a common local name, those names are well indexed in back. I'm on my third copy of this weighty volume. My first copy did not include pages 777-792; in way of compensation, pages 769-776 appeared twice. My second copy had all its pages in proper order; a few of them, however, were printed out-of-register, i.e., illegible. My third copy looks good, worth the trouble of repeated deliveries and checking each page number. I found that I did NOT like being without it. Maybe over our next Wisconsin winter I'll have time to check it for spelling and punctuation errors. Summary: Beautiful Book This is a beautiful, coffee-table worthy book. The information is detailed and thorough. However, I am just starting the landscaping process, and was hoping for a book that I could study to decide WHAT I want to plant; possibly a book divided into categories. This book is organized entirely alphabetically. With this book, you must already know the plant and can then get any information about it you want. It will be useful once my landscaping is finished. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great Book This is a great book filled with pictures and very informative information for Square Foot Gardening. I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering Square Foot Gardening, you will not be disappointed. Summary: All New Square Foot Garedning I loved the original Square Foot Gardening book and it helped me to garden in a region of poor soil. The new version is awesome. It is easier to read and makes gardening even simpler than before. Summary: good info, too proud i appreciated the author's gardening experience and am looking forward to trying the method. however, it was tough to wade through his self congratulatory tone and repetitive self praise for developing the concept. i found the charts very useful for spacing and planting dates. his website is also full of testimonials without any balanced critique of his book and method. if you can stomach the arrogant tone of the book, there is some good garden wisdom to be gained. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: It's all here After reading the one straw revolution i really wanted to see how Fukuokas' system worked. I was not disapointed by this well layed out and functional guide to his methods. While his philosophy claims that no list of rules and time tables can acturatelly set out how natural farming should work, the publication of the hystory and methods of his experiment proves vital to the unhinging of common industrial theories on the subject. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Bang for the buck For anyone dealing with woody landscape plants this is the bible. Unlike books written by writers, this book is written by a plantsmen and teacher and researcher. Personal experience growing or visiting every species in the book gives it believability beyond all others in its class. The book covers the things that need to be covered - transplant success, pest issues, landscape uses (gosh if this section were read you'd see less houses overwhelmed by giant trees and more living street trees than dead ones). Dirr has his opinions and not everyone will agree with all of them. But at least his come from experience not "reading". If you are upset about the lack of images you can get those elsewhere. This text was never intended to be a key to botanical identification but as the title states it is a manual of woody LANDSCAPE plants. Every landscape architect should be mandated to pass an exam based on this book. They would then be able to use a repetoire of more than 10 trees and perhaps for a change the survival rate of their landscapes over time would rise. I can't say enough about how much this book has meant to me as I restore and plant a college landscape designed by Olmsted. There is nothing better than knowing you've planted the right tree in the right spot and that it will outlive you and your children because of the wise choice. Summary: A must for landscapers! I love this book! It has every woody plant listed along with other varieties. The extent of information is incredible. A must if you are a designer, landscaper or garden center and nursery owner. It's a book you can't run your business without! A great resource. Summary: A must for landscapers! I love this book! It has every woody plant listed along with other varieties.
