Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Everyone should have this book! My Boss bought me this book when I was diagnosed with Adult II Diabetes. This book is more precious to me than a raise! I love the way the author composed the book...humor, honesty, great recipes and tips. Highly recommended for any person who wants to live a healthy life style. I have lost 15 lbs and my husband has lost 20. We both want to lose 30 lbs each. If you follow the suggestions in the book you will lose the weight. No matter if it is 30, 50 or 100 lbs...the glycemic works. The book encouraged me to find a good cookbook for glycemic recipes and I found a great one here at Amazon.com. You will feel better, sleep better and have more energy. The recommendation for "Emergen-C" found in the book is great. I found a box at Rite Aide and this is a great vitamin drink. It can also be found online. Talk about a pure energy boost! Wow...great stuff and pure vitamins. LOVE this book. Buy it. You will not be sorry. My friends and coworkers are now reading the book and following the very simple suggestions. It is so easy! Not a drastic restrictive diet at all. Very simple. Highly recommend. Summary: BUY THIS ONE FIRST! I was diagnosed with Insulin Resistance about a year ago, and while doing my research, I recently discovered the GI Diet and I have to say this book is wonderful at explaining all the terms and giving me the basics, so that I can finally lose weight. I am currently involved in Weight Watchers and kept gaining weight each week. With this diet, I am LOSING and it feels wonderful. WW is great for support and encouragement, so I am using it together with the Glycemic Diet. This book has helped me tremendously and it is very easy to read and understand. Some of the GI books were way too technical. Thank you for this book. Summary: Very informative This book is a down to earth and humorous take on using the glycemic index to control or lose weight. It gives the reader the needed information to make wise choices for implementing the diet and yet does not overload one with excessive termonology and scientific reasoning. A great book for one wanting to learn more about using the glycemic index program. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: good as primer It is readable and has an enjoyable way of teaching. It is a mix of the basics concepts and results, but not quite well organized regarding the logical flow of a math presentation. Anyway, I recommend it. As the next book for a beginner (or even the first) I recommend Barboianu's book "Understanding and Calculating the Odds". Summary: Helped me pass my waiver exam Since I'm starting graduate school, I needed to take a statistics exam in order to avoid taking a statistics prerequisite class. While I used to know much of this information, I completely forgot about eighty percent of it and I pretty much needed to learn from scratch. This book was great. This stats book provides the basics - pretty much everything covered in an introduction to statistics class. The fluidity and ease of explanation makes this a great study book that can be read from front to back. There were a few flaws. I found the beginning to be a little too slow and in depth for such simple concepts. The latter parts tended to blur together so that many of the same concepts seemed like they taught the same thing. I wish there was a wrap up for all the different concepts to make summarization easier. Also, a quick "cheat sheet" of formulas at the end and better some better summaries would have improved this book tremendously. Overall, this is a good book and I recommend it for anyone who needs to brush up or quickly learn statistics. Summary: Complete Idiots Guide To Statistics Mr.Donnelly really knows how to teach. I like his style. I came away with a very solid knowledge of basic statistics. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: CREATIVE SEX TECHNIQUES -- NOT JUST THE BASICS If you are looking for a sex book that covers every topic really well and in detail, then this is the book. Other books that try to cover a lot of ground are not as good. Even the Dummy guide is not at all as good as this Idiot guide. This book is great by giving important details about sex, and it is funny at times, too, which sex should be. The pictures are sexy with out going too far. This is the best sex book to learn a lot and to get a more creative sex life. It would even make a good gift, because the title seems like a gag gift, but inside the contents are so great that anyone will learn from it and be grateful. If you want the best sex book get this. This is not just a basic book. If anyone thought that then that person did not read past page 5. The book has over 400 pages and it gets very advanced. Whether it is fantasies, or sexual technique, you will learn in this book what is "normal" and how to be good at using your sexuality for more pleasure in your life. This book is worth every penny. Five Stars all the way. Summary: Lacking at best... I guess I should have listened to the title of this book a little more before I wasted my money on it. This book is written for 12-16 year olds that have little or no knowledge of sex. It has the most elementary stuff in it that even a person living on an island by themselves their whole lives could figure out. I thought when I bought this book the author would be talking about techniques that would actually help achieve "amazing sex" as it said in the title. Um think again. It's like the author had some sort of agenda while writing this book. She states that is normal to have "rape fantasies" and discusses "how to be comfortable being gay". It is not normal to have rape fantasies and as for being comfortable with your sexuality I agree it is necessary for good sex, but don't waste my time with a whole chapter on it. Honestly it's just false advertising naming the book "The complete idiot's guide to Amazing Sex", it should be called "The complete idiot's guide to the Basics of Sex from a leftist agenda." There is nothing in this book that will help the reader achieve "amazing sex", just the basics that any simpleton could figure out. Don't waste your money unless you're still in junior high. Summary: Its a wonderful guidence book Most people know that there's more to sex than the missionary position. But to make sex really hot, some people need a little guidance. That's where acclaimed sex educator--and WCBS-TV relationship correspondent--Sari Locker steps in. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Amazing Sex, Third Edition, has fresh advice on how readers can make smart sexual choices, cast aside inhibitions, and keep their sex life exciting well into their golden years. | Why My Wife Thinks I'm an Idiot: The Life and Times of a Sportscaster Dad

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: amusing a quick read with good stories. anyone who is a dad and a sports fan will easily relate. Summary: Lightweight, but amusing Mike Greenberg is fairly well known to the serious sports fan as cohost of ESPN radio's morning show "Mike & Mike", and an occasional anchor on SportCenter. In this book, he shares some anecdotes about sports - encounters and thoughts on/with Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson and a few others. When he describes the instant rapport that occurs between strangers who are fans of the same team, many will nod knowingly. But mostly, the book isn't about sports or his experiences at ESPN. Most of it is about his family life, a goofy look at domestic foibles. Andy Kaufman-like, it's occasionally tough to tell if Greeny is exagerating or if he's being dead serious. He pokes fun at himself and his metrosexual image, happily tells things that make himself look less than macho or clever (social miscapades when tipsy, the fact that he claims he didn't know what a uterus was before his wife's pregnancy etc). Give him some props for guts by admitting that much of the book is from journals he wrote as part of therapy. While anecdotal, Greeny is a pretty good storyteller, and many of his domestic disaster stories are quite funny. His gambling-addicted aunt Ada is a true hoot. And at times things are sweet and romantic or even poignant. One entry tells of the time his 4-year-old daughter became old enough to take her swimming lessons alone, and the instructor told him "Your daughter doesn't need you" - I bet any parent could relate similar moments. It's a light book that reads well enough, and made me laugh often. Sports fans and parents may well like it. Summary: Trite, Boring & Disingenuous While I enjoy Greenberg's radio show, I was extremely disappointed in this book. Throughout the book, Greenberg relays the same banal stories he repeats ad nauseum on the radio. Unfortunately, unlike on the radio, when Mike Golic is always available to slap some sense into Greenberg, this book is purely 100% Greenberg. I am always amazed by those people who have lived extremely privileged lives, yet try to act like they have "struggled" in life. Greenberg has had to "struggle" thru a cushy upbringing, going to exclusive schools such as Northwestern and eventually landing his gig at ESPN. For those of you in the Chicago area, I hope that you caught Debra Pickett's article on Greenberg in the Chicago Sun-Times. While Greenberg professes to be a family man, the article notes how he spent 2-1/2 hours talking about his favorite topic, himself, while forgoing the opportunity to meet his wife and children at the pool. Keeping with his privileged existence, the pool was located at the East Bank Club in Chicago, yet another privileged club to which Greenberg belongs. I should receive a refund for slopping thru this "book." Hopefully, this review will prevent other people from making the mistake I did. ESPN should fire this wimpy "meterosexual" for writing this book. Summary: |
| Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory (The Complete Idiot's Guide)
Publisher: Alpha |
||
| ISBN: 1592574378 List Price: $19.95 Amazon Price: $12.97 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great accessible guide to music theory - especially for the beginner My background is in engineering and computer science. However, I do a lot of multimedia programming, and when it came to writing code for computer music I was at a loss because I have no formal musical training whatsoever. I've never played an instrument and I probably never will. However, I found it disabling to be unable to read music or understand the language of music theory when it came to reading the many helpful works on computer music that are in print and on the web. This book appeared to be what I was looking for and it turned out I was correct in my choice. It takes you from the absolute beginning, assuming you can't even read music, and takes you from intervals through phrases through counterpoint and into composition and performance. There are very helpful exercises at the end of every chapter with solutions at the end of the book, making this a good choice as a textbook or an excellent and inexpensive means of self study. Part one talks about the notes of a scale,the different types of clefs and staves, the intervals between notes, major and minor scales, and keys and key signatures. Part two, on rhythm, starts by teaching you what simple whole notes are and moves on to sixteenth notes and syncopations. Also covered are time signatures, tempo and dynamics, and how to navigate through a piece of music. In part three, Tunes, you learn how to put tones and rhythms together to create a melody. Next you learn how to add chords to your tunes and find out about chord progressions and song forms. At this point, you have what you need to create your own pieces of music. Part 4, on accompaniment, teaches you how to train your ears so you can write down music as you hear it. You'll be able to create simple accompaniment parts on piano or guitar. Last, this section shows you how to take a song in one key and transpose it to a totally different key. Part 5, on embellishment, shows how to fill out your music with harmonies and counterpount, and how to add fancy chord substitutions to your tunes. The last section is on arranging music. It talks about how to write for specific voices and instruments and how to create attractive master scores and lead sheets. You also learn how to conduct your music in front of a choir, band, or orchestra. The appendices contain a complete glossary of terms, a chord reference, and answers to the chapter exercises. I read the entire book, although parts one through three, which focuses on music literacy, are what I concentrated on because it coincided more to my needs. Parts 4 through 6 are more on performance and composition. I was so impressed by the book that I also bought "Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Composition", which I found equally accessible. I highly recommend both books. Note that there really is very little difference between the first and second editions of this book, which makes sense because music theory does not change much over time. The parts of the second edition of book and chapters that they are composed of have identical titles and near identical content to the first edition. The only real difference is that the second edition has an audio CD in it that contains "The Complete Idiot's Guide Ear Training Course". If that is not important to you, going with the first edition and saving some money might be a good idea. Summary: poorly written introduction to music While the content of this book is appropriate, the text is sometimes misleading, confusing and vague. I do not recommend this book. Edly's is much better. Summary: Idiots Guide to Music Theory Haven't completely read the book yet, but is interesting and I am learning things about music theory, I didn't know. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: An Incredible Book on Pirates! Gail's in-depth knowledge on pirate facts and myths open up a whole new depth in the study of pirates as she takes you from the earliest known periods of piracy, to the modern day brigands in her book. This well thought, and well crafted book offers you insights past our romanticisms of pirate lore, but provides the reader with clear depictions on what life of a pirate was truly like. Not only are the subjects fascinating, but the book offers plenty of pictures to provide incredible visual aids on the topic. If you had to buy one book on the subject of pirates, then you should pick up this book! Summary: Shiver me timbers! This is a grrrreat book on pirates and the lives they lead. Gail Selinger writes with wonderful detail in a clear and concise manner. A lively read for pirate experts and novices alike. The world of the pirate trully comes alive. Summary: ARGH!!!!!!! I enjoyed reading the book as it took it from the basics to the cut throat antics of those long since washed up(pardon the pun) adventurers. The historical aspect is interesting as very few authors will give the good and the bad of the cutthroats we all are at heart. If you like pirate stories or movies you'll love this book. | The Complete Idiot's Guide(R) to Playing the Harmonica
Publisher: Alpha |
|
| ISBN: 0028642414 List Price: $15.95 Amazon Price: $10.37 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Good...but could be Great I've read music, sung, and played piano and violin, so your mileage may vary, but I was playing some simple songs the first and second day I had the book. I think it's organized well, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much is covered in the music theory chapter. Two things that would really help a lot: (1) A CD so you can hear the examples, and (2) Proof read the music! There are many mistakes, not only on the songs that are written out in tablature, but even in the samples that are written in standard music notation. Very frustrating to have to wonder on each example what I'm doing wrong, only to eventually experiment and find the RIGHT note (usually just the difference between a blow and draw on the tab versions) and correct the music. I also agree with a previous post that it would have been nice if they had continued supplying suggestions on which notes should have chords underlying the melody and which should not, but I'm not really bothered by that omission. Here's the good news: the author/publisher could go a long way towards solving BOTH these problems without even issuing a new revision (although that would be ideal...I'd buy the book again if it was accurate and had a CD): they could post an errata page and post mp3 files for the sample music (I know, I know, copyright laws, mechanical licenses, etc., but many of these songs like Shenandoah are public domain, some are originals, and I'm not suggesting to post the original ARRANGEMENTS anyway...just files where you could listen to the melody). I still found this book valuable, but I'll definitely need another book of music for my practice sessions--preferably one with an accompanying CD. Summary: Far Better Than The Name Implies Takes beginners to a somewhat advanced level. It'll keep me busy for a full year of practice hours. Summary: Playing the Harmonica Good clear lessons. Gets you playing right away. Fun and easy methods. Summary: |
