Summary: "Thumbs Up" U.S. Style
I found the book extremely well written and enlightening.

One comment of note: does Bowden realize that "thumbs up" in Iran is equivalent to the Western display of the middle finger? Gives the last few sentences of his book quite a different meaning.
Summary: A Grand Achievement! Thrilling!
The best book that I've read in a long time! This book reads like the best international intrigue novels that I've ever read. That one knows the outcome before hand diminishes it not at all. That you can remember many of the events and characters amplifies the experience. That this was the first major, headline-grabbing battle of the current Western Civilization vs. Islam war makes it a must read.
Summary: Fascinating and important
Bowden ties together an amazing number of interviews to tell the story of the Iranian hostage crisis. While not engaging in moral equivalence, he devotes a great deal of effort to making sense of the motives of the various players in this historical drama.

I was most interested in understanding why the Carter White House reacted so oddly to the crisis. Why did the U.S. do (apparently) nothing for so long and then attempt a spectacularly improbable rescue effort? Bowden sheds light on the behind-the-scenes negotiations and on Carter's decision making process. I am still unconvinced that Carter acted correctly, but the book helps to make some sort of sense out of how Carter acted.

On a related point, Bowden rejects the idea that Reagan had much of anything to do with the hostages' release.

With tensions between the U.S. and Iran still high, this is a very important book. It is also extremely engaging; Bowden is an exceptional author.

Summary: the truth about Islam
The politically incorrect guide to Islam tells the true motives about the Islam religion and why the muslims are fanatical about their religion and why the rest of the Arab population silently accepts the actions of the militant Islams. You understand why they do what they do and are aware of the great danger they possess to America. This will change your thinking so you can make sound decisions for yourself about the Islam religion and the danger it reveals to us. anne
Summary: A reasoned and well supported analysis of Islam -- a must read!
I initially thought 9/11 was the work of a few deviant Muslim criminals, but some friends who had lived in the Middle East challenged me to dig deeper and find the truth.

I did, and I gradually concluded that Islam is anti-rational and has a core value of violent jihad to convert the world to itself. The Islamic riots over the Mohammed cartoons were the final proof for me.

When I bought The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam, I expected an invective screed against Islam. Instead, it builds a reasonable, well-researched, and well-supported case that Islam is not a "religion of peace" at all. Although many Muslims are kind, toloerant, and peaceful, they are not taking Islam seriously. Anyone who does cannot escape the call to violent jihad and world domination.

If you are wondering what (if any) connection terrorism has with Islam, you should read this book. It is not a rant; it treats Islam fairly, but it also shines the spotlight of truth unflinchingly.
Summary: Great Book and Handy Reference
I really enjoyed reading this book and I will use it as a handy reference guide in the future.

The Best part of the book is the point-by-point analysis of what Islam really is - compared to Christianity. Also the critique of the politically correct (PC) view of Islam serves to open ones' eyes to the way that liberals try to make every religion in the world equal. They want it to be roughly comparable to Christianity, which it most certainly is not, as Mr. Spencer most certainly proves.

The only problem with the book is the Catholic apologetic stance toward the Crusades. Evangelical Christians will find few condemnations of Papal politics at the time of the Crusades, which should be included in any study of the history of the Crusades. Mr. Spencer's main point is still valid, saying that the Crusades were a justifiable response to Muslim agression in the Holy Land. If not for that, then I would give the full Five Star rating.

Summary: Londonistan: a must read
Melanie Phillips has written an explanation of reasons why her native country, the UK, is losing its war against Islamofacism. This is a must read for all Americans because the signs are here that America is going down the same track. All Western civilization is in peril.
Summary: A Frightening Assessment
Melanie Phillips has written an excellent, well researched and courages expose of the degree to which Islamic Fundamentalism has influenced the way Britain is Governed, & the degree to which it has affected the political parties, the judiciary & the police.
Summary: I cry for my country!
I have recently emigrated here from the UK, I use to read Melanie Phillips columns in one of the UK daily tabloids and this book is as sharp as her columns, she would never back down from the Left wing academic bullies or the Islamic actvists and she hits the mark with her observations every time, I am 52 years old and I was born and bred in London and it absolutely broke my heart to leave the country of my birth, in truth we have given it to islam and they now totally dominate large areas of the inner cities and things are getting worse,I did not feel safe anymore and my wife who is originally from Colorado was afraid of the growing anti American sentiment being spewed out daily by the BBC,The Guardian and Independant Newspapers, I pray that America can see what is happening across Europe and will cut out the "Islamic Cancer" that has started to grow here before it becomes terminal.

Summary: Thoughtful Analysis that Crosses the Ideological Divide
This book is a thoughtful analysis of ideas and cultures that is a wake-up call to be proactive against the Islamic terrorists. The author, a liberal, in critiquing both liberalism and conservatism, has lessons to offer both sides, to bridge the ideological divide. The left is ready to sacrifice security for liberty and the right liberty for security all in an effort to destroy each other and obtain supreme power. Meanwhile, they both overlook a dangerous competitor from an entirely unexpected quarter - radical Islam which has no intention of entering any dialogue with anyone other than the use of a bomb or a sword. In medieval times, the Byzantine and Persia Empires battled each other for supremacy in the Middle East only to be destroyed by another foe, Islam. If liberals and conservatives don't start working together, they will share the same fate.

The author has lived in both the Netherlands and Norway where he is fluent in their languages and experienced both the best and worst they have to offer. Gay-bashed in both countries by Muslim immigrants, the politically correct and tolerant societies chose to overlook such behavior by their Muslim minorities. Muslim intolerance is rewarded with tolerance by the greater society in hope that they will become tolerant. Instead, gay bashing is part of a wider phenomenon of many Muslims refusing to become part of the host culture. The Western European countries themselves facilitate the very behaviors that become a threat to the greater society. They have an inability to absorb immigrant and make them part of a common culture. "Tolerance," "understanding," and "multiculturalism" - the can't words of European liberalism does not work with cultures that reject the values of democracy and individual choice.

The Western European countries have a false sense of cultural superiority over Amara in their attitudes toward Muslim immigrants. Their cultural policies in the name of "liberalism" multicutluralism," "tolerance," and "understanding" have made worse the problems of absorbing immigrants into their body politic. Radical Islam and separatism are encouraged among Muslim immigrants as a sign of "respect" while at the same time they rejected from the greater society because they are foreign-born. The author himself could not get work that he was qualified even though he spoke the language well because of this attitude. America is the more dynamic society in which immigrants of all kinds are welcomed and move upward to their full potential. The result is that more educated Muslims immigrate to America while the less educated and even illiterate migrate to Western Europe. The Western Europan welfare states are exploited by these these immigrants who reap the benefits without contributing economically to the system or culturally becoming part of it. Instead ill-educated Muslim populations fester in their quarters experiencing high rates of unemployment and crime blaming the greater society for their problems and welcoming its destruction.

Individual Muslims who seek to better themselves are discouraged by these invidious attitudes and government policies from becoming part of the societies they live in. Women, in particular, are victims in which even if they have been exposed to the more liberal values in school are married off to less educated men back home through arranged marriages to keep them down and expand the Muslim population. With the native population not reproducing itself and having no fervent belief in Christianity, Western Europe indeed may become Muslim, radical Muslim indeed. Thus, Western Europe has created a cultural time bomb.

West Europeans are parochial. They know more about America culture and its celebrities than their next-door neighbors. Borrowing from another author, the Europeans are "one-idea states" that go from left to the far left in their ideas. The media is part of the ruling elite that reinforces this instead of questioning the politicians. Charles De Gaulle did not restore France as a world power but launched an anti-American screed. Fidel Castro and Che Guevara are political and cultural heroes even though they created a despotic system in Cuba. The Europeans fail to realize that the radical Islam that they are nurturing in their midst has no desire for dialogue and understanding but demands the acceptance of Sharia and their inferiority as dhimmis. While Americans may differ on how to fight the war on terror, the Europeans blissfully still think they are not part of this even though they have experienced their own versions of 9/11. The East Europeans who lived under tyranny a generation earlier know the difference.

The West Europeans have a "zero-sum understanding of economics" (page 126) in which they perceive one could only become rich by stealing from somebody else instead of an economic pie that can be made bigger to benefit everybody. The result is increasing unemployment and stagnant economies by the European welfare states. They also support foreign tyrants through foreign aid.

Anti-Semitism has reared its ugly head in Europe in which history turned upside down. Palestinians are seen as latest victims and the Jews as the Nazis of the Holocaust! In an effort to be politically correct, the West European media describes a "cultural conflict" between Muslims and Jews when in reality is simply unprovoked one-sided Jewish bashing by Muslims whose anti-Semitism has been encouraged, rather than diminished, by the supposedly tolerant, liberal, multicultural West European culture.

Western European media perceive American culture and materialism to be the enemy while glossing over the evils of Communism and glorifying it. Radical Islam is the enemy they choose not to confront. Peace at any price has become the new mantra (page 132). Peace, indeed, they may get, the peace of the grave. Only belatedly Western Europe has started to wake up belatedly to some consequences of these ill-conceived policies that their good intentions unreciprocated will result in their destruction if left unchanged..

We in America can learn from the West European experiences not to make their mistakes. It is time that the left and right in America listen to each other and agree on a common program on how to fight the War on Terror. Or else we will lose it. There can be no accommodation with fanatics.

Summary: A Churchillian call to defend Western civilization
Bruce Bawer's While Europe Slept is an incredibly powerful book. Having recently read two authors whom I consider to be the authority on Islam, Daniel Pipes and Bat Ye'or, I must say that I will be adding Bawer to my list of favorites. His writing style is unique because he isn't just writing about his observations, but rather his own experiences dealing with Islamists in Europe. Bawer also introduces us to contemporary European writers and political figures that are not willing to submit to dhimmitude without a fight. The sad part of the story is that a once great continent is being engulfed radical Islam and is letting the balance of power tilt further away from moderation and Western values. I highly suggest Bawer's book to anyone who wants to know why we in the United States are fighting back. Finally, his gripping conclusion summons the European people to a Churchillian defense of their culture and way of life like nothing I have read before. You have to read this book!

Summary: Pretty darn scary
A hot global-warmed earth under Islamic rule - makes me glad I am in my 50s, and will hopefully be gone before it happens.

I think this is all true - but I should also remind everyone of the threat of Christan Fundamentalism in the U.S.A. While they don't enfore their beliefs with murder and violence, their tactics are subtle and insidious. The enemy is really conservative religion of every stripe. Only a capitalist, libertarian society, free of welfare and fundamentalist religion can save us. I fear for the future.

Summary: Wonderful!!!!
She did a wonderful job. I could not stop reading it. It is good to know that I was living in Iran for past 22 years and I never knew what is exactly going on there.
Summary: Iran Awakening by Shirin Ebadi
A well written book outling her life at a very turbelent time in Iran. She is a highly intelligent woman who tackles oppression is a courageous and spirited way. Iran under the mullahs tried to revert to prehistoric times and basically ruined the country and its society particularily the lifes of women. This book proves the indominatability of the human spirit and the ability to come to terms with the most appalling oppression. She continued to rear her two daughters in an atmosphere of fear and oppression and still continued her wonderful work for human rights. Having read the book I believe she richly deserved the Nobel prize. The book demonstrates that we are all the one spirit and despite geographic , religous or cultural differences we are all trying to do our best in living our lives and doing the best for our children. Life can be a struggle but it is much worse for people living under oppressive regimes. In helping to put a face on a "muslim" we can see that in the extremities of any religion great evil can be perpetrated in the name of a God but the vast majority do not support these extreme views.
Anybody with "hawkish" views about military intervention should read this book and I believe that if read with an open mind your position may very well change.
Again what it demonstrates to me is that change can only be gradual and countries will eventually change only through the will of its people. The problem for Iran is that a lot of its best brains are leaving in droves and who can blame them!
Summary: Great book
Very accurate description of daily lives in Iran, I'm very pleased that finally someone -and who could be better than Ebadi- wrote a book explaining the strange phase Iranian people went through in the past half a century.

I specially enjoyed the parts where she explains the gradual enforcement of Hejab (women's dresscode), and the gradual fading of women's rights in the Religious regime.

I've recommended this book to all my friends. For anyone who is interested on the subject, this is as close as one can get to how it feels to really live in Iran.

Additionally, Ebadi is able to transfer her amazingly strong personality right to the reader. You'll finish the book thinking that you should seriously put up with a lot less s*** than you do, even if it might sometimes be scary to single-handedly stand up for what you believe.

Summary: American Liars and Killers!!!!!
The problem is not with Islam. The problem is in your decadent american hearts. Your culture is filthy and your minds are closed. Allah closes the hearts of those who refuse to see the Truth:

"As for the disbelievers, whether thou warn them or thou warn them not it is one for them; they believe not.

Allah hath sealed their hearing and their hearts, and on their eyes there is a covering. Theirs will be an awful doom."

Sura 2:6-7

You say we are violent but you murder children every day in Iraq, Afganistan, and in Palistine. This blood is on your head.

Summary: Excellent, and no mistakes
This is a well-attempted translation of the Holy Qur'an. Though some people have issues with 18:86, this is due to their ignorance. the setting of the sun can be used to denote a physical location, ie when i was travelling, the sun set when i reached Anaheim. Also, the arabic word used is 'Wajada' which means "appeared", so it appeared to Zul-Qarnain that it set in a murky marsh. It 'appears' that the sun sets under the hills, but me saying that doesn't take away from my scientific integrity.

If you are going to try to knock the scientific integrity of the Qur'an, why dont you look at what it said regarding embryology, astrology, biology, oceanology, and other theories that we just discovered in the last century which the Quran got right on 1400 years ago? I think everyone owes it to themselves to look into this and find out
Summary: Mistake in the Koran - Read it Here!!!!!!
One of the questions which puzzled the ancient Arabs was, "Where did the sun go when night time came?" The Qur'an gave them Allah's answer.

He [i.e. Zul-qarnain] followed, until he reached the setting of the sun. He found it set in a spring of murky water.
(Surah XVIII ( Kahf) vs. 85-86)

We agree with Muslim scholars that Zul-qarnain refers to Alexander the Great (see Yusuf Ali's appendix on this subject in his translation of the Qur'an). According to this surah, Alexander the Great traveled west until he found out what happened to the sun. It went down into and under the murky waters of a pond. When it was completely covered by the water, darkness fell upon the earth.

To the early Muslims, this surah gave the divine answer as to why darkness fell when the sun set in the West. They assumed that the sun, like the moon, was the size perceived by the human eye, about the size of a basketball. Darkness came when with a mighty hissing roar it went down under the dark waters of a pond. They boldly and proudly proclaimed that this marvelous answer proved that the Qur'an was indeed the Word of God.

Today, modern Muslims are quite embarrassed by this passage and try to ignore it or to quickly dismiss it as poetry. But the passage is not part of a poem. Thus it cannot be dismissed as figurative language or poetic license. In the context, it is part of a historical narrative which relates several historical incidences in the life of Alexander the Great.

The mistake was based on the erroneous assumption that the earth was flat. The authors of the Qur'an did not know that the earth was a sphere which revolved around the sun.

Summary: What an incredible journey!
This book take you on an unforgettable journey. It is a sobering tale that made me laugh, but more often left me angry and confused at how women were treated. I'm glad I had this snapshot of lives lived very different from mine here in the United States. It made me thankful for rights, liberty and life here in our free country.
Summary: Tells the real way woman/people are treated in Tehran
My reading teacher emailed me and said to read it.
Summary: Focus On The Story
Nafisi has a wonderful concept: writing about a group of women who are so desirous to learn, that they literally risk their lives to do so. The shortcoming of this book is that the writer is more interested in conveying her opinions of the lessons she gives than in relaying the stories of her students. Nafisi can't resist lecturing the reader. Quite frankly, I couldn't care less what she thinks about Nabokov. Apparently, Nafisi is more interested in her own apparent insights than any risks her students take or any wisdom them might have. Her ego is too prominent in what might otherwise have been an inspiring story.

Summary: A misunderstood masterpiece; Top Ten books of the 20th century
This to me is without a doubt one of the most influental books of the past century. It exposes a misunderstood man who during the Civil Rights Movement played a vital role in voicing the opinion of Black America. It is sad to see that he still is often portrayed as a racist angry black man. That to the simple mind is the easy way to label him as, but it would not serve those who are really intent on understanding him as a person. He was a far smarter person who was caught in a time of tension between races and negative sterotypes from all people (Lets face it. If you grew up as a teenager or older during that time period, you would of had some extreme misconception or bias towards someone of a different race too. So to all these people who bash him for being anti-whitey, stop being so closed minded and place yourselves in the shoes of our ancestors.), and only grew as a person until his untimely assassination. Not only is it inspiring and filled with its own tradegies, it leaves a lot to be desired and offers the views of one of black america's most beloved heroes. I could write a essay on him here, but I would perfer for the reader to learn from him through his own readings. Read this book, but dont read it having already judged who he is or understanding the racial views of the times.
Summary: Nice try guys
If you read the fine print this "autobiography" is actually written by Alex Haley. So who knows what parts are from Haley's life and what parts are from Malcolm X's life? HELLOOOOOO??? Like I said, nice try guys.
Summary: Interesting
I just read The Autobiography of Malcolm X. I enjoyed the book and thought it was intriguing. After reading the book, I did so many web searches about the man that I never knew. The book really changed the way I think of things and the way that I perceive people. This book is REAL. Even in 2006 this book holds truth and value. I believe that it should be read by every Afro-American.
